Highlights of Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá

Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá was created by Saint Junípero Serra in 1769 and was moved just 5 years later to be near the San Diego River to allow for better access to the Kumeyaay tribe, farmland, and water. The mission was attacked and badly damaged in 1775, and restorations began in 1776.

A wall was added around the mission to protect from further attacks, and the mission grew to 55,000 acres with orchards and vegetable gardens. In the 1850s, the mission was used by the U.S. Cavalry, but in 1862, President Lincoln ordered the lands to be returned to the church.
