Amstelpark is one of Amsterdam’s crowning glories of the local park scene. The location of the 1972 Floriade, an international horticultural exhibition that takes place in the Netherlands every ten years, the park has attempted to keep and maintain as many of the original exhibitions as possible.

Located along the Amstel River in the southern section of Amsterdam, there are unique attractions of note even before entering the park’s boundaries. The Riekermolen windmill, made famous as a subject of a Rembrandt sketch, lies just south of the park, with a statue of the artist close by.

Highlights of Amstelpark

Amstelpark has much to offer its visitors of every age. One of the favorite attractions is the Amstel train, which takes passengers through the entirety of the park, including the famous “Rhododendron Valley” that features 139 species of the plant, the Rosarium, a butterfly garden, and even a Japanese garden redone in 2001 to honor the 400-year history between the two countries.

Families with children especially love the playground, petting zoo and miniature golf course contained within the park. As the park is meticulously maintained, there are many opportunities to quietly sit and enjoy the lush vegetation. There are lovely walking paths, as well.

Important Points to Know About Visiting Amstelpark

Amstelpark is a great place to spend the whole day. In addition to the things to see and do, there are even eateries to grab a quick bite or ice cream without ever leaving the park boundaries.

Be sure to stop by both the Famous Glass House and Oranjerie where exhibitions are held. There are also four beautiful terraces throughout the park to give visitors even more of an opportunity to appreciate nature. If you are lucky, you may able to catch the once-a-month farmer’s and craft market that is favorited by locals.
