My girlfriend and I visited Cartagena from Wednesday, June 26th to Sunday, June 30th and stayed at the GHL San Lazaro Art Hotel. The transportation shuttle from the airport to the hotel all went smoothly. Our driver Natalie communicated with us via WhatsApp the day before and day of arrival and was there for us upon arrival. Check in went smoothly and when we arrived in our room the view of the Castillo de San Felipe from our window blew us away. That view and the outdoor pool were two main factors for choosing this location. The pool was a big bonus on a few days when we had downtime and was refreshing from the heat outside. We had breakfast at the hotel every morning and lunch once at the hotel. All the food is fresh and delicious. Hotel staff are friendly and always greet you with a smile. A few things to note, being able to speak at least a little Spanish will go a long way. Also, taxis are cheap - I would recommend taking a taxi from the hotel to the old town or getsemani, or wherever your travels take you. The bridge over the waterway that connects the hotel to the main cities is a little sketchy with homeless people. We had one incident in broad daylight with an attempted pick pocket. The nice thing was 10 cyclists/cars saw the incident, pulled over, and confronted the person. People will look out for you, but I would suggest avoiding walking that area, especially with how cheap taxis are. That is no fault of the hotel, just something to be aware of. Would stay again!
