This hotel stay was meant to provide me with a night's lodging near the airport for my flight the following morning.
The room rate was $245.
While in Porto, an emergency occurred, forcing me to return to Lisbon one day sooner. In need of a hotel room, I asked the hotel if they could add an additional night. They could... at a rate 4X my original booking rate - $1000 for the exact same room I would use the next night for $245. This wasn't an elaborate, 1500 sq. ft suite or anything close to the price they wanted. The shower pan had no lip and leaked water onto the bathroom floor, requiring me to reduce the water pressure to minimal. The shower floor had a long gouge in it, and there was the typical mold and poor caulking around the full height glass panel that served as a shower curtain. The marble vanity was sorely etched and dulled. No other component of this hotel could possibly shine after their lack of humanity.
This was nothing more than capitalistic greed taking advantage of a consumer in need that they'll never see again. For a Melia namebrand servicing establishment, this place needs a corporate inspection on the product they're trying to sell, at a price that would drive business away instead of attract it.
As a firm believer of "what goes around, comes around", I'm sure they'll get what they deserve.
