Penthouse at Park Hyatt Bangkok is an immersive drinking and dining complex occupying the top 3 floors of one of Bangkok’s hottest hotels. The grand idea of a visit to Penthouse Bar + Grill is to move through the venues to experience the particulars of each – all grouped around a smart ‘Bachelor Pad’ concept.

The entrance to Penthouse takes you past racing memorabilia and boy’s toys and, at the end of the hall, you find a vintage BMW racing bike in mint condition. There are plenty of other hints about the jet-set lifestyle of the fictional owner of the Penthouse placed all over the 3 floors. Come for dinner at The Grill and then follow your feet upstairs to check out each of the 3 excellent bars.

The Penthouse Grill

The Penthouse Grill is a premium steakhouse with enough variety on the menu to keep all guests happy. It’s also where the sense of ‘bachelor pad’ is most keenly felt. A few leather-bound booths stretch along one wall, with tables packed quite close together, creating a lively ambience. The open kitchen is really part of the dining room and gives the restaurant a homely feel.

The menu explains each of the 10 cuts of steak on offer – everything from a Matsunaga A3 Wagyu striploin from Japan to an Argentinian grain and grass-fed Striploin Churrasco. You’re unlikely to find more variety anywhere in Thailand.

Elsewhere on the menu, choose from piri-piri chicken, Thai seabass and Alaskan king crab salad, each of which offers extremely good value for a rooftop restaurant in a 5-star hotel – particularly one of such good quality. From the sides menu, you should try the mac & cheese, which is flavoured with porcini and morel mushrooms for an earthy flavour that goes remarkably well with a glass of red.

As with all Hyatt brand venues, the wine list is superb. Penthouse Grill currently has 9 reds by the glass from its extensive cellar. There are also some excellent by-the-bottle options.

Insider tip: If you’re dining as a group and want something unique, consider booking the exclusive Chef’s Table, which can only be reached by walking through the kitchen, and into a secret dining room.

The cocktail bar

The Cocktail Bar, a floor above the restaurant, straddles the line between mature and fun-loving. You can choose a private table by the windows or sit up at the bar and enjoy the nightly DJ sets of lounge house, with the DJ booth seemingly floating above the stacked bar. As for what to drink, there’s a handful of spirit-forward signature cocktails that are some of the best in Bangkok:

The Reverent is a masculine drink, consisting of Elijah Craig and Ardbeg whiskies, amaretto, Fernet-Branca, maple syrup and almond powder – a dusting of almond powder around the rim makes this nutty, grainy sipping cocktail a real winner and surprisingly gentle.

The 250 CC starts with a Martin Miller’s gin base mixed with vermouth, absinthe Chatruses and a balancing lychee syrup, topped with chocolate bitters. These are mature drinks befitting of the swanky surroundings.

The other hot spots in Park Hyatt

The ‘Speakeasy-esque’ Whisky Bar, is hidden behind a wooden panel and is full of mystique. The bar is stocked with over 150 of the world’s finest whiskeys, with a live pianist starting from 9pm most evenings. The hushed and dimly lit space is perfect for a sordid rendezvous or just a nightcap with a sense of danger. There’s no sign to the Whisky Bar, so look out for an abstract strip neon hanging on the wall. You can also find the Penthouse Rooftop Bar on the 36th floor.
