Left hotel at midnight because our room was very hot -- the A/C didn't work, and windows don't open, so we were stuck in a very stuffy, hot room, and couldn't sleep. Apparently the buildling's HVAC system was only set to heat, so setting the in-room thermostat to cool was pointless. Other customers were also complaining. After an hour, the staff brought us a small fan as a solution -- but they were running out for other rooms. The front desk staff said no other rooms were available and claimed they could not book us in another hotel (which I find hard to believe -- just protecting their profits as a matter of practice). Without too much arguing, they agreed to a full refund (which indicates how bad the situation was, if they didn't put up a fight). After midnight, I booked a hotel down the street, which obviously was more expensive last minute. The hotel didn't follow up with Expedia of course, so I had to bear the burden of resolving the refund myself. Basically, the hotel seems to run on a shoestring: unhappy, overworked staff; reliant on self-check via screens; slightly run down and generally uncomortable. Some bean counters and executives are certainly making a great bonus by making everyone else miserable.
