Plymouth

What you need to know before you go

Plymouth is a major port city in the southwest England region of Devon, famed for its maritime heritage and quaint historic district of Barbican. At Sutton Harbour, travellers can visit the National Marine Aquarium and see sharks and rays up close. Plymouth is also home to a number of marinas and the Plymouth Fisheries fish market, where vendors sell fresh seafood right off the boat. At the Mayflower Steps, visitors explore the very spot where the Pilgrims first set sail for the New World in 1620.

Kids love to visit the Dartmoor Zoo with its famed big cat collection. The National Trust – Cotehele site offers a chance to tour a 19th-century watermill that still works to this day, while other National Trust Sites at Saltram and Buckland Abbey allow you to explore a Georgian house with an interior designed by Robert Adam and a historic abbey, respectively. Finally, Hoe Park offers the opportunity to check out a towering lighthouse with historic monuments on a scenic shoreline.
