Barksdale House Inn - Charleston

Das Hotel befindet sich in unmittelbarer Nähe zum French Quarter - und liegt insofern optimal. Um die Ecke (ca. 150m) ist ein Fahrradverleih ($28 am Tag), der es ermöglicht ganz Charleston kreuz und quer und entspannt kennen zu lernen. Das Hotel hat zwei Gebäude und dazwischen einen unbeleuchteten Parkplatz (kostenfrei), der nachts absolut finster ist. […] In unserem ersten Zimmer tropfte es massiv von der Decke - über uns hatte jemand geduscht und das Wasser wurde dann im einem Eimer aufgefangen! Wir hatten Glück, dass noch jemand vom (hilfsbereiten!) Personal im Gebäude war (nachts sind die Gäste allein!). Das dann zugewiesene Zimmer war ebenfalls sauber, aber in den Bodendielen war ein ca. 45cm x 2,5-3,5cm breiter Spalt offen - und der war nicht neu entstanden! Ähnliche Beispiele notwendiger Renovation zeigten sich an einigen anderen Stellen. Insgesamt ist es die Lage und der vergleichsweise günstige Preis, die das Hotel interessant erscheinen lassen. loved the location. We walked everywhere. The room was small, but the A/C worked great, bed was comfortable-- what more do you need!?!? We had great weather and were able to enjoy the breakfast in the courtyard.

The old, 1787 building was charming, as was the period furniture. The location was excellent; walking was all that was required. Afternoon tea and cookies was pleasant, breakfast was good. Would stay there again

We enjoy Charleston but the room really needs a comfortable chair. Two wire chairs with caning that needed attention does not cut it after a day of sightseeing. Barksdale House is very central to the Charleston historic district, near the college. The Easter breakfast was superb. We have stayed there several times and had an after-wedding party there. They were nice about accommodating our special requests.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Barksdale, particularly given the phenomenal downtown location with free parking. The cookies and tea put out in the afternoons, and incredibly friendly staff, made it even more lovely. Very nice B&B with only 14 (huge) rooms. Excellent service with parking and breakfast included. House is from 1800s so not as soundproofed as modern rooms, creaky floors, etc. but with antiques and charm. Wifi a tad slow. Inn was in great location. Staff was very hospitable and breakfast was great. Enjoyed the fireplace at breakfast. Our room was the only one which looked like it needed some tlc. Other rooms (and the doors were open) looked very nice (and many were unoccupied). So, I would not recommend room 9. But all in all, a good visit.

Our room was huge and very inviting. It was the small things that bothered me. The bed was a canopy bed and was high off the floor so that you could see under it and there were an ample supply of dust bunnies under there. I would've been willing to overlook the cracked tiles, chipped furniture, and TOTALLY uncomfortable outdoor furniture that was used in the sitting area of my otherwise comfortable room, IF I had not returned early (thank goodness) to my room one evening to find that the door had been LEFT OPEN by the housekeeping staff! When I called to express my concern, […] no one called me back. As I was checking out, one staff person mentioned that they'd received my call and that it was housekeeping's fault. The other staffer muttered a belated sorry over her shoulder (she didn't even deign to turn around and look at me as she said it). The ONLY good thing about my stay is that the inn is located in a GREAT neighborhood that was a 2-minute walk to the conference venue. I attend the conference every year. With a few, simple improvements this historic property could offer so much more. Our companions and I had two separate rooms that needed deep cleaning and easy upgrades to earn a better rating. A plastic, hand-cut curtain in our bathroom and a build-up of dirt on baseboards and windowsills were a turnoff. Plastic tablecloths in the breakfast area and a mop and cleaning supplies on the porch are easy things to fix. The breakfast room also served as the office, resulting in a small clutter of computer equipment and wires that diminished the ambiance of an otherwise lovely gathering area. We stayed here for 4 nights and were able to walk to everything we wanted to see. The hotel staff was friendly and our room was large with a king size bed. It also came with one parking place. You could not beat the location for the price. We would stay here again.

Our family had three rooms in the "carriage house" (no one had mentioned that part) The queen bed had a "full" size 1 inch topper pads...this meant the pad left uncomfortable ridges, and the topper pad didn't help much on the rock-hard mattress. The first night was torture...we couldn't get good sleep, and just wished the night would end quickly. We […] changed rooms for our second night...the topper pad was a little better (not much), but the bed creaked badly with any movement. The bed didn't keep us up the second night...it was the rowdy guests across the hall...arguing, slamming doors, etc. (Did I mention you could hear everything through the walls?...BAD) We ultimately had to call an off-duty police officer to handle the situation (the management left us his card, and it took 15-20 minutes for him to arrive)...no management seemed to live on premises. Almost every room on premises (except the kitchen) had been converted to bedrooms, which kind of took away from the Victorian "home" idea...it was more a Victorian rooming house. The breakfast was fine...but you can get better at IHOP for $7.00. And "somehow" we had the idea that the "hotel" was located closer to the old town places to eat and things to see than it actually is. While walking to places, we kept passing hotels which appeared nicer and were more convenient. Do yourself a favor...stay somewhere they put some money into their beds and have management to handle problems. Very disappointing. Mehr

Had a 3rd floor room which was a minor pain. Room was nice enough, but a bit worn. Had to pull all shades in order to have privacy since university gym and house next door could see right in. Very limited places to put things for our 2-day stay, so even though the room was large, it felt a bit cramped in both bedroom and bathroom. On the plus side, the king-sized bed was very comfortable, shower was fine, and the continental breakfast was good. It was a pretty nice place but the staff had somewhat of a lackadaisical attitude and were not very welcoming. Overall we did enjoy our stay. The one disappointment in our room was a urine smell. We only noticed this in our room, nowhere else in the house. The staff was pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was good and the waffles were exceptional. We pretty much just had waffles both mornings they were so good. The location of the house was awesome. Just one block […] from King street where there were many shops and restaraunts. We did a lot of walking from the house and drove where we needed to. While in Charleston we would definitely recommend going thru the USS Yorktown carrier and a WW2 sub which are now open for tours. These were very interesting and we got their early and had one of the Vets who volunteers there took us on a tour and told us about the Ship. You should also check out E Bay street and the beautifull homes there along the water. You also have to eat at the Mellow Mushroom. Thier Holy Shitaki pizza was the bomb. Mehr

We were WOWed when we walked into our room for the first time. It was all very pretty and romantic. The location was pretty good. We walked almost everywhere during our 4days there. The down sides were that we were in room1 on the first floor and right on the street. Between the yappy dog across the hall in room 2, the drunk people on the street and the garbage trucks driving past several times before the sun came up, it was hard to stay asleep. The inn is in a great location and easy access to the old town area. the little things such as home baked goodies for afternoon tea and fresh fruit included in breakfast were really nice. the only problem we had was that our room wasn't made up on one of the days during our stay.
