We were visiting Kauai for a wedding on the beach in Hanalei for our daughter's dear friend, whom we think of as our adopted daughter. We wanted a place to stay for two nights, I can't say enough regarding how pleased we were with the Garden Island Inn. The whole staff that we had the pleasure of meeting were wonderful! Jan, Germaine, Joyce, Sheila, […] and even Pat, who was working out by the garden, were so friendly and accommodating. The Inn was beautifully decorated, cozy, clean, and they even had beautiful lights decorating the Inn at night, which so-welcomed us back after our coming home from touring. We especially loved having the availability of the Inn's beach chairs and towels. We threw them in the car for the day, and enjoyed having them for use when we stopped at the beach after visiting the mountain areas. We enjoyed the Inn so much, that we reserved a room there for our last night's stay on Kauai, before we flew back home. We are looking forward to visiting Kauai again, and will certainly look forward to staying at the Garden Island Inn again. NOTE: Thank-you again, Jan, for all that you did to make our stay at the Inn so welcoming, comfortable, and inviting. It was a pleasure meeting you, and I hope that we meet again. Thank-you. ALOHA!! This is a great location as it is 5 minutes from the airport. I had been on Kauai for a week and was catching an early flight to Oahu so I wanted to be close. I spent two nights so I could also tour Lihue. I chose the Garden Island Inn because of the strong reviews in Hotels.com. The staff are very friendly and helpful and definately make you feel at […] home. The room was basic but clean and comfortable. Besides being close to the airport you are in Lihue with all its amenities. There are a number of good restaurants within walking distance and more with only a few minutes drive. Also within a couple of blocks is some basic shopping and tours.There is a nice beach about a block away and the hotel will supply towels and snorkle equipment and toys. Overall a nice place with great people and I would highly recommend. Mehr

Great location across from shopping, dining and a great beach! The hotel is decorated with bright paintings and murals by local artists which added a great touch that one doesn't get with hotel chains. The front desk ladies were super nice and had beach items for us to borrow for our time at the beach. If you stay here, call ahead and talk to them about […] the type of bed you prefer. Our mattress was really hard and we're used to a softer mattress. My husband mentioned it when we checked out and they said they have mattresses in varying degrees of firmness and they'll be happy to accommodate a specific request if available. We were pleased with it. We were especially pleased with the breakfast - a tasty collection of items placed in our unit. This allowed us to prepare and enjoy our breakfast on our own schedule. We often are unable to take advantage of B & B breakfasts because we leave early for outdoor activities.

We needed one night's lodging before we could get into our condo and chose Garden Island Inn. Bed was terribly uncomfortable, a window unit A/C was on when we got there (totally unnecessary) and it smelled a bit mildewy. Not horrible horrible, but I wouldn't stay there again.

Our condo was perfect for our family, our only complaint was that the bathroom was filthy at check in. After I cleaned it, all was well. It was a great value and had a great central location.

We had a great room with a wrap around private balcony, a little kitchen area, had a king size bed with a twin bed. The staff was sweet let us borrow DVD,s, beach towels and gave us popcorn with our movie. The only negatives were the beds could be updated, there was a trick to get hot water in the shower and probably could have some more water pressure. […] But overall we would stay here again it was really close to many restaurants and bus stop right outside the hotel. This hotel is great. The rooms are clean and in good condition and the staff is super-friendly and helpful. The hotel is 3 minutes away by foot from the Kalapaki beach, and very close to a few good restaurants. I'll definitely go back next time I need a hotel in Kauai.

Everything was great, location, atmosphere, friendliness of the staff. Our unit was quite large. My only negative was the bed was a bit uncomfortable, and the air conditioning unit had to run a lot and was noisy.But I recommend it for a more authentic experience on Kauai.

This hotel was delightful. The staff, art, view of the surfers, everything was great. We didn't rent a car we walked everywhere right from the hotel. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The Garden Island Inn is a great place to stay as you arrive or leave Kauai. Actually I think it would be a great pace to stay for your whole stay on Kauai. We stayed there when we arrived, it is only about a 5 minute taxi ride from Lihue Airport, after a long flight from Chicago, just to get our bearings on the island and rest after the flight. We […] found it so comfortable, friendly and convenient, that we also arranged to stay there while waiting for our flight home. (they even had a short stay price, as our flight didn't leave until 9:35 pm and we left our condo at 1100 am. and needed a place to stay in the meantime). This will definately be our first and last stop every time we come to Kauai in the future. The staff could not be more friendly and helpful. Mehr

We actually stayed in a condo where daily clean-up service does not occur (i.e. making beds). However, the kitchen was fully stocked with everything except food and there was a clothes washer/dryer available in the condo. It was clean and cheerful, had lots of pillows and 4 balconies. The Garden Island Inn office staff was very friendly and had stuff […] you could borrow like ice chests and boogie boards. They were open extended hours and easy to reach. The location near the airport is also central on the island since the road does not go all the way around the island. I would definitely return. Mehr

The location cannot be beat. The rooms are a little small, but they are very nicely decorated by local artists and clean. Each has a fridge and a full size coffee maker. They have beach chairs, beach towels, boogie boards and snorkel gear for the guests to borrow and take to the beach (right across the street) There are also many restaurants and shops […] within a block. An older motel made fun and funky with art, on the painted walls, ceiling balconies. . . Beautiful landscaping with a fountain, friendly, helpful staff. Noisy road didn't bother us as we live on a busy road but if you can't sleep with some traffic noise, this may not be the place for you.

You could pay double to stay across the street at the Marriott, but all that would get you is access to their pool and room service. The Garden Island Inn is about 2 miles from the airport in Lihue. There are two small shopping centers with restaurants one block away, and the beach is a 3-4 minute walk. A larger shopping center with Costco and more is about 2 miles away. The Inn has free parking and wifi, and provides snacks (granola bars, etc) throughout the day. We liked the hotel very much but wished we weren't so close to the office. We would have wanted a 2nd or 3rd floor so we could have an outside space to dry bathing suits. The place felt quiet and private even though we were close to restaurants, shopping and the beach. Most of the front staff were very nice...one not so much. One wonderful woman actually […] helped my kids open their coconuts! This all adds to the memory of Kauai which our family has saved for quite some time. We would be happy to return...tomorrow!! Although this is an older hotel it is well kept, clean and the bed is comfortable. It is quaint and furniture is dated but in a convient location to shopping, restaurants, several clean beaches, and staff is friendly and accommodating. Good place for those on a budget!

We have timeshares on the island and decided to fly in the night before so we didn't lose our first day at our resort. We chose the Garden Island Inn b/c it is one of the oldest hotel/motels on the island and we enjoy the old Hawaiian traditions, as well as the nice low price. We were not disappointed. The rooms are small, which we were well aware of […] when we booked, but very clean and adequate. The staff was awesome - very helpful and informative. The small grounds were amazing - lots of flora and benches and tables to use to enjoy the surroundings, as well as piped-in Hawaiian music for our listening pleasure. It was also very close to several restaurants and right across the street from the ocean. If you want to stay at a W or similar, don't book here, but if you like tradition and culture and don't mind small - give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed. Mehr

We stayed on all the Hawaiian islands in budget hotels. This was our FAVORITE! First, the front desk went above & beyond friendly service. Our room was spacious, large & very comfortable. I loved how you could be relaxing on bed or patio & watch the ocean, cruise ships come/leave. The waterfall leading to your room-so soothing. I liked the nice touch […] of fresh flowers in the room (there were a few ants-it's nature though!) The location is great: ABC store across the road, bus stop right out front, many restaurants in walking distance, & of course the beach area. The hotel was great-providing beach gear & towels FREE. This was a great 'home' away from home with all your amenities provided. Our next time back, we will be staying here longer on the island, at this wonderful hotel!! Guests are greeted by very friendly staff, lots of landscaped flowers , cheerful room, comfy bed, easy parking, restaurants and stores within walking distance. The main downside is that the hotel is on a "main street" that goes past the cruise port and to the airport. Our first night there we heard cars and trucks all night long. The next three nights, […] the traffic seemed to be way down and we slept. We wondered if the arrival of a cruise ship the first morning was the cause of the night traffic. I would stay here again if I wanted to be situated in Lihue and did not want to spend a small fortune on a hotel. Mehr

This is a small older hotel located at the harbor in Lihue. The staff was extremely friendly. Our flight into Lihue was delayed and we did not arrive at the hotel til after midnight and found an envelope taped to the office door with our name on it and the room key. This is a nice place to stay overnight, but probably not for a long stay.

Our upstairs room with quirky island decor with lots of local art was light and airy and overlooked the harbour. Great ambience. Breakfast is not included, but a few little ustomer delights such as DVDs and popcorn were much appreciated! Our family (2 adults and 1 teenager) needed to be self-catered so we stayed in the apartment associated with the Garden Island Inn, not in the Inn itself. (Though we would have loved to have stayed at the Inn!) The apartment is showing some signs of wear, but was very clean and comfortable, and well appointed, and had a great view out over to the beach. […] All the staff were absolutely marvellous, happy with suggestions for things we might like to do, and with no request to hard to sort out. BTW the artwork in the rooms was simply outstanding and we've never stayed anywhere where the painting in the rooms were such valuable (>$4K) originals. The complimentary videos, towels, beach mats, boards, drinks, snacks and even golf clubs made everything so comfortable. We had a memorable stay and have already planned a return visit. Mehr

I spent one night at Garden Island and enjoyed my stay. The hotel is a very friendly environment. It is nothing flash and fancy but it was clean and affordable. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The hotel location is great if you want to be close to Nawiliwili bay for swimming or stand up paddle boarding. We had to fly out from lihue airport […] the next day so it was good location for us because it is only a 10 minute drive away. If you are used to staying in nice chain hotels such as the hyatt or marriott then I wouldnt recommend this hotel. But if you are happy with a friendly family run hotel then I would highly recommend Garden Island. Mehr

This hotel has great staff, very friendly and welcoming, and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. One lady on the desk when we went down early enough even let us feed the coi they have in the water feature next to the office. The room was very clean, and the location is very convenient to lots, including Duke's Canoe Club and Harbor Shops […] within easy walking distance. More, they have beach gear in excellent repair they loan out -no rental fees! Included boogie boards, some snorkel gear, reef walkers, coolers, and beach chairs. There is also a small library of DVDs that you can borrow. The only problem we had was our room. The bed was one of the few ones during our Hawaii stay that didn't give us a backache, but the room was so small that there was practically no room around this double size bed. We literally had to move the little table and chairs out of the way if one of us wanted to go out on the balcony, which was reduced in size to give the other room on the same corner more space. The kitchenette was a microwave and minifridge- no sink. We had to do our dishes in the bathroom sink. And the bathroom had only a shower, no bathtub. In short, I would gladly recommend this estalishment for its staff and charning ambience, but would recommend you not stay in either of the two least expensive rooms unless you are just crashing for a night before flying out. Staying here was like staying at my aunt's home, but without the family obligations. I was greeted by Sheila when I checked in, my room was cleaned by Judy, and I was checked out by Germaine. All the ladies were courteous, warm and friendly with easy smiles. The room was spacious and clean. The location was prime with Kalapaki Beach just within minutes […] while food and shopping were closer. Even closer still was the Kaua'i bus stop which was just outside the hotel grounds. I took the bus everwhere I needed to go. I visited the towns of Lihue, Hanalei, Waimea, and Kapa'a all by bus. That helped lower costs, but it also gave me a chance to catch some local flavor. During the night I did hear the parking lot because I was on a ground floor room, but by late night, all I heard was the ocean surf which was very relaxing. All in all, I really enjoyed my stay at the Garden Island Inn. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying on Kaua'i, especially if they stay in Lihue. I hope to visit Kaua'i again next autumn, and I intend to stay here then too! Mehr

Had wonderful one night stay here on Christmas Eve. Great staff and nice room. They even placed a Christmas stocking on the outside door knob, filled with surprises, that night. Very nice place.
