My wife and I recently stayed overnight here for a concert at the Fox Theater, so I chose this hotel based on the location. It was walking distance to the theater, very convenient. The room itself was average, the bathroom was nice. The room was pretty small and the bed was a twin. My wife and I are used to sleeping on a queen, so we were a little cramped. […] The TV remote was a bit hard to use (you had to press really hard on the buttons to change the channels). The elevator was very slow and creaky - kinda scary. The worst part was the parking - since it is in downtown Oakland, the hotel does not have their own lot. The front desk clerk told me about the parking lot right next door. It was $5 to park overnight. There was broken glass all over the parking lot from where people's windows had been broken, so this was very unnerving. I have a new car and I was worried about my car getting broken into or stolen. But luckily nothing happened, but from looking at the neighborhood I saw it as a possibility. I guess Oakland has a very high crime rate, so anyone traveling here should be aware of that. The price of the hotel was average. Would I stay here again? Probably not. It would be worth driving further than to stay in a scary area. Mehr

The hotel is in a prime location for where I was going, but I still thought it was a bit sketchy. It might just be because it was my first time to Oakland. However, the rooms were really nice. Not the biggest, but it was nicely furnished. The people were nice as well. I enjoyed the stay.

Reasonable price and near to BART as well as the Civic Center and Convention Center.

This hotel was comfortable for an older hotel but the walls are too thin! The major problem, however, is with the parking. There are two parking garages near by but they both close at 8P.M. and if you have chosen to park inside one of them your car is not available until the next morning.The on street parking after 6P.M.(which is what the hotel advertises) […] is extremely limited and the area does not inspire on street parking after dark. Very clean, comfortable, and is located in a very centric area. I will be back for sure and highly recommended.

I use BART, I visit offices located nearby, and I run, and Lake Merritt is just a few blocks away. When I have to use a rental car, I usually stay somewhere else only because of the limited parking in the area. The place is clean and well-kept; I am a frequent and fastidious traveler both in and out of the country, and this property is well-kept. I […] really do love the front desk staff, they were a pleasure and are a selling point for a return stay. I'd like to suggest that heater instructions be posted for those rooms which have it incorporated into the air conditioning system, as some of us (especially if we're from areas where airconditioning isn't needed) might be looking for a wall dial or switch and might otherwise not figure out how easy it is to stay warm. Considering this is a 2.5 star-rated hotel, the accommodations were decent. Despite the ridiculously small size of the room (and bed), the hotel was (relatively) nice. We stayed there New Year's Eve and all other hotels in the downtown area were either outrageously high-priced or sold-out. I was very impressed by this hotel. Although my room was tiny it was very comfortable and well done. Good bed and updated bath. Staff was friendly and while I didn't have a meal in the restaurant, I did enjoy the company of the owner and would look forward to staying there again and dining at the restaurant.

The hotel and rooms were extremely small. The bathrom was bigger than the room. There was no view from the windows.And the service was horrible, would not reccomend

A well-renovated old hotel, My room was small but very comfortable. Stairs are wide and easy to use, and I preferred them to small elevator, even on 5th floor. Staff are so helpful, and the restaurant, Maisa, is great. Extra convenient to 12th and Broadway BART stop, Convention Center, pharmacies, good food, news stand, etc.

Very clean and comfortable Hotel in a tough area! The front desk clerks especially Chauncy was extremely helpful. They gave us info on the area and what's best to do. I was there for Business. Convenient location for My needs. I would recommend this Hotel to anyone!

Great value ... rooms are on the small side but they are clean, pleasant, and quiet. Single incredibly slow elevator is a pain. The restaurant is not open on Sundays which is odd. The hotel's neighborhood is not good and the car park next door, the only one that's near, is cramped and unpleasant. All of that not withstanding ... it was very good and […] a bargain at the price. Very satisfied. The mediterrean place right outside of the hotel has great food as well. The lady at the counter was very helpful and nice. The room was little small but very neat and clean. BART 2 blocks away. Bottomline, great hotel, staff, and location. Booked again for next week stay already.

Hotel was very clean and comfortable. The room was on the smaller side but it got to the point and besides...you aren't in town to stay in the room all day right? Window was facing another building so the natural lighting in the room was slim to none. The hotel is located downtown so like any other downtown area there are homeless people. Clean and comfortable. Close to BART and Jack London. Internet is not wireless...

I would recommend this hotel highly, great prices and a wonderful service. Very clean and comfy. Location was great used the metro system to get around, close by and easy to use to get to the city. Would defiantly stay here again. I was travelling with my 17 year old daughter, felt safe at night in this area.

It wasnt so far from where I got off the B. A. R. T. train.

Awful hotel you won't book it anymore. The double bed is acutually for single. Narrow space and noisy envirnoment make you sick. It's true for us on Jun 24.

The hotel is located in downtown Oakland, which is cool because there are many place that you can go to eat and there is also alot of cool shop there! And there is a lake about 2 miles away from the hotel! I loved how nice the staff was and how clean the hotel was! The only thing that sucks is paying for parking, but whatever!

Downtown Oakland is sketchy and hotel tells you you can park on the street in front of hotel for free. I was apprehensive but did with no incident. However, no one was at the desk when I arrived at 5:15 pm and the front door was locked. I had to wait outside for at least 5 minutes until a guest came and swiped the door open. Waited another 5 minutes […] until front desk clerk came. He never acknowledged the fact that he'd been gone, never asked how I got in, etc., and I didn't confront him. (maybe he was just having a bad day!) He was there again the next morning at checkout and was no friendlier. Room was small but fully stocked and very clean. Comfy bed and pillows. Big bathroom. We needed to be close to the BART. This hotel is less than 5 minutes from your room to the train doors. Neighborhood is iffy so take care at night - we stayed together so felt pretty safe but I wouldn't have felt safe alone. Rooms are spotless. I say "rooms" because we had to change due to a problem with the shower. The staff was very accommodating […] in providing another room only two doors down, but no discount or upgrade or anything else was offered for the inconvenience of having to change rooms. Hotel door is locked at all times which helps it to feel safe. Oddly, a white van was parked in the street close to the front door for more than one day, with loud music and marijuana smoke filling the surrounding air. Not sure what that was about, but I was glad I wasn't staying there with, say, my parents or something like this. Rooms are small so if you're not used to the style of a boutique hotel in a major city, you might be disappointed. Not a space to hang out in and have guests come for a visit, but fine for sleeping and getting ready for a day out. Big pluses are the cleanliness and convenience to the BART. Primary minus is the iffy neighborhood. Mehr

The Clarion is two blocks from Oakland Center; convenient if you have business in downtown Oakland. This is an older building (probably circa 1920s) that is well maintained, with good quality finishes and good beds. The room itself is a bit small - but it contained a bed with a good firm mattress, desk, and TV area. If you were to spend a lot of time […] in the room with someone else, it might feel tight. The bathroom was large and quite clean. I had an interior room, which means you overlook an airshaft. Downside - poor view. Upside - no street noise, which worked fine for me. Many people have commented on the neighborhood, which is indeed sketchy. However, if you were to stay at the Marriott, several blocks away, the neighborhood would be equally sketchy - unfortunately that's just what downtown Oakland is like. Internet is free, but a via a cable on the desk. I would prefer wireless. There is no dedicated parking, but there is a pay parking lot next door, and on free street parking at night. The clerk explained the parking options clearly when I checked in. Good choice if you need to be in downtown Oakland. I wouldn't select this as a place for a relaxing vacation spot, because I wouldn't pick this area as a relaxing vacation spot. Mehr

I was in town to attend a concert at the Oakland Coliseum on a Sunday night. I picked the hotel because of its close proximity to the BART and I wasn't disappointed. My only complaint is that the area is like a GHOST TOWN on the weekends. Almost every restaurant, coffee place, store, etc was closed. I understand that it is a business district, but I […] never anticipated that downtown Oakland went to sleep on the weekends! This little hotel is not fancy, but is very comfortable. The rooms are recently remodeled, clean and have all the necessities. The hotel is quiet, and the staff is friendly. I plan to return. I recommend it.

I stayed here for one night. There was great customer service. The staff was very friendly and nice! The area surrounding the hotel isn't the safest and there was no refrigerator in the room to keep any of your leftovers! Overall, a nice hotel with decent amenities in a decent location.

We were there for an event. The location was close and the price was right. everything went off without a hitch.

I went for cheap. Room was cramped. Coffee was extremely weak. Heating unit was so loud it waked me repeatedly at night. Place was clean, though, the workers friendly enough, and the North African restaurant downstairs was much better than I'd expect from a place attached to a hotel.

This was a very nice older hotel that looks like it had been recently remodeled. It is in downtown Oakland and very convenient to bars and restaurants, and the BART station is just 2 blocks away so you can go right into San Francisco as well for just a few bucks.

Loved this place, service location...terrific value. We go to Oakland 3 times a year on biz, and will return to this hotel absolutely. Marriott much more $$ and cannot compare to this place

Hotel has no parking!!! Parked in front to check in, asked about where I was parked & was told It was ok, 4 min later returned to my car & had a parking ticket for $58 !! Went back in & was told they usually do not ticket there. Area is alful, feels unsafe, street people everywhere, broken glass (car windows) in closest parking lot. Very confusing on […] parking lot times given by hotel for local lots. Evening staff not friendly or helpful. The room type that I booked (prepaid) was not available, given less type room. Hotel was clean, had to be buzzed in or have a room key to access the hotel, safter inside than out. Room was clean, updated, small, quiet, bed was comfortable. Had continental breakfast at hotel (not free) hot, fast, good, friendly & reasonable. Internet was slow. Great for one person for one night & if they are comfortable walking a distance to park vehicle inside or chance vehicle in outside lots. I parked in outside lot and vehicle was fine. Morning staff friendly & helpful. Hotel didn't do anything about room type except to say room was not available, had to deal with room given. Hotel didnt offer anything for parking ticket not even an apology for telling me it was ok for parking directly infront to check in. (I was not at a meter just directly infront of the hotel). Mehr

This is a remarkably good hotel for the price. Very occassionally, hotel.com finds a gem of a hotel which is clean, refurbished, well located, well managed and inexpensive. This is one of the few.

As a manager of a band we see and stay in a lot of hotels weekly. We were a group of 8 traveling and we had no complains. The staff was very pleasant and friendly. Rooms worry clean and over all service was out standing. I highly recommend. Looking forward to staying the next time we are in Oakland.
