Aloft Birmingham Soho Square - Homewood

Aloft is in a great location in Bham. The rooms are nothing special, but are clean and comfortable. The key thing is that it is right in the middle of Homewood in Soho, so you can walk to a lot of places (to eat, shop, etc.) and it's safe. My one complaint is the door to the bathroom was really flimsy and it was basically like not having a door at all. […] Other than that, the hotel and the service were great. My bf and I stayed here for a wedding. It's in a great location with great shops/restaurants in walking distance. Parking was bad at night. When we checked in they put us in the wrong room so then we moved into the right room. We were supposed to get a welcome wedding gift but the hotel put all the gifts for guests in the lobby on a table and of course […] all the gifts were taken by the time we got there which was kind of disappointing. It would have been better if the hotel actually put the gifts in the blocked rooms for wedding guests instead of leaving them out in the open where anyone could take them... Mehr

I dug this place. But then, I like the kind of sleek Euro-cool decor and spa/hipster-ish ambiance it exudes. So if you're a traditionalist motel/hotel kind of person, you might not like this. I, on the other hand, like shelving instead of drawers--a shelf unit with various storage spots stood in the sink area and it also served as a divider between […] that and the bed area. I like when furniture serves as subtle room dividers, so that worked well for me. I like the frosted glass sliding door into the bathroom, though some folks might not. My room was stocked with coffee and bottled water (thanks!) and I was on the 5th floor and had a view of the street below (19th) and the surrounding buildings. My floor was pretty quiet, so I got a decent night's sleep. The beds are firm, but comfortable. I thought the mattress on the platform was great, because that's how I sleep at home, but it's a little lower than a traditional hotel bed (but not like a futon, so don't worry), so if you're used to a higher bed, you won't find them here. I read some reviews that didn't feel it was an adequate "business-friendly" hotel. I don't agree, but again, I happen to like the kind of decor the hotel employs. I'm a writer, so the desk areas were adequate for my needs and because I travel alone quite a bit, I don't require much by way of furniture. In my room, there weren't any of the traditional chairs that you can sit on. The only chairs were two standard wooden desk chairs at the two desk areas under the windows. There was also a trendy padded bench underneath the TV (great 42-inch flat screen positioned just right for watching from bed) that I used to stack my luggage on, but that was it. The minimal take on furnishings might be a drawback if you're traveling with kids or if you absolutely must have those traditional hotel chairs in the corner, but for me, the room was pretty much exactly what I wanted and I found the desk area under the window perfect for what I needed to do. This is a very modern, chic hotel with a great experience! Staff was very friendly, and the neighborhood was convenient and comfortable.

During our stay we had to deal with loss of power due to Tropical Storm Lee. While we had plenty of lighting and air in the room, the shower was a bit cold. Surprised that we had these amenities at all. The staff did their best to keep us entertained and informed. The hotel is in a great location to downtown stores. The bar area and lobby in general […] were great with plenty to keep you amused. Board games, pool table, etc. Parking underground was quite convenient for us due to the torrential downpours. The pool is nothing to write home about but clean and the fitness room is nice with all new equipment. Comfy beds, cool decor, modern bathroom facilities. The only flaw I would say with the room design is that there is no privacy in the sink area of the bathroom as it is an open space. Not really a problem unless you have someone in your party coming in while you are dressing. : O It opens right to the hallway. We will definately return on our next trip to B'ham. In addition to staying three nights for a wedding weekend, we used the Aloft W xyz lounge as the location of the Welcome Reception for the wedding party and out-of-town guests. The hotel staff proved very helpful and accommodating, especially the bar staff. The contemporary decor and furnishings, open layout, and pool table contributed to the comfort […] and enjoyment of our guests. We were able to bring in and set up our own desserts, and the Baby Bites (mini-cakes) we ordered from nearby Pastry Arts were a HUGE hit! Mehr

Excellent little new hotel. Comfortable , contemporary and clean. Staff was very helpful and well informed. The surrounding area have good restaurant options. Highly recommended.

This is a very unique place to stay. It is very hip and modern in decor, room was immaculate, 2 free bottled waters daily,well located in Homewood with shopping a good restaurants within walking distance, very safe area. Indoor pool. Bar in lobby: I never heard any noise in my room. Highly recommend the Aloft. Great concept. Well done. Also, great bed […] and very ample free parking. Mehr

This hotel is no hilton but if you are looking for something fun and different it is well worth the money. Keep an open mind and you will love it. Aloft-the wave of the future!!!

Great hotel with very helpful staff. Need to have ice more available!

Room was very, very small, and my view was of a brick wall. No true door on the bathroom. The supplemental food/treats were too expensive. This was WAY overpriced. I guess you are paying for all of the contemporary furniture. The front desk staff was nice and helpful

Terrible! I didn't get the room in which I had prepaid, which was more expensive than the other type. The clueless hotel clerk said that rooms are first come first serve and they don't guarantee rooms. Huh? you can tell it's a new place so maybe the staff hasn't been fully trained yet. The lack of training must also exist with housekeeping. The shower […] was dirty, the sink in the bathroom was wet, an empty roll of tissue by the toilet, on and on.... The room itself already had a broken blind on one side, the remote didn't work, the cordless phone didn't work (it wasn't charged), on and on... Even if everything was perfect, the hotel concept is not for me because it is an inexpensive (and in my opinion poorly executed) knockoff of it's parent, "W" hotels. This concept may appeal to some travelers and if so by all means DO NOT stay at the Birmingham location. Mehr

I stayed here on a business trip. My room was very quiet. The hotel was wall appointed. I would stay here again.

Hotel was clean and employees nice. No Ice machine. No breakfast. No coffee. Safe didn't work. It was a small room like at a ski resort or on a cruise ship. VERY noisy. We could hear people in the lobby and freom outside all night. We didn't hear other room noises though. We would not stay here again.

My only 'complaint' was that the airconditioning was really loud...but it worked well. Great hotel!

Great bar and bar staff - apparently it is a frequented by locals as well as traveler. The room was very smart and spartan and the desk made sense with outlets for cell phone and computers.

This is a trendy hotel in a trendy area of town. Nice rooms. the lobby is more like a bar than a lobby, cement floors nice furniture. The only problem when I arrived the hotel had to find my reservation. I then asked for a upper floor room and I was told they were all dirty. This was at 3 in the afternoon. Check -in time. Easy access to downtown and Mountain Brok areas. Very modern but still very comfortable.

While the location and design of the hotel are both impressive, my guest and I were surprised by several things. My reservation had not been processed correctly, so when we checked in there was no record of me in the hotel computer. However, the desk clerk checked us in anyway and gave us the keys for a room with 2 queen beds, when I had paid for a […] king. He immediately changed them out for us, so I will give the hotel points for helpful staff. However, he placed us in a handicapped room, which had a roll-in shower that was poorly designed. Rather than having a sloped floor so that water would run down into the drain, the water ran around the drain and immediately flooded the bathroom and the area outside. We had to construct a makeshift dam from the bathmat to prevent the water from reaching the carpet in the room. Additionally, the quality of the toiletries was sub-par. The shampoo left my hair feeling greasy, and the soap in the shower was ineffective. The room was comfortable and clean, with a powerful air conditioning, but the details were disappointing. Mehr
