Hotel Julien Dubuque - Dubuque, IA

The hotel and its amenities are fantastic, but the service of the staff is quite poor. The restaurant serves tasty food, but getting someone to wait on you within 15 minutes of being seated is a challenge. The spa offers relaxing and truly amazing treatments once you get past the incompetence of the staff working the reception desk.

We took a weekend trip with our 3 year old. Our daughter liked the pool. My wife liked the history of the hotel. I liked the price. What more can we ask?!?!

The hotel has great renovations and the beds were unbelievably comfortable. My only complaints would be that there were no bath tubs in the facility, only showers and that the breakfast food in the hotel wasn't so great. Seems they tend to undercook some of the meals. Other than that, the spa people were very nice and the hotel was very clean!

This hotel was clean and roomy, had a large touch of class and luxury, good food and for a very reasonable cost. It felt like we were back in yesteryear.

Our stay at the Hotel Julien was great. The restraunt "carolines" was very good & the room was clean & comfortable. Looking forward to our next stay.

I'd read that the staff were not the most attentive, but found that to be far from the truth!The staff were great, at both the front desk, in the restaurant and the maids.

We stayed in the Premier King Suite and it was much more than we had anticipated. The kitchenette area is gorgeous and it is nice that the bedroom is separated from the kitchen and living room. Our room was extremely clean and welcoming. We also ordered room service from Caroline's restaurant and it was delicious. We will definitely be staying here […] again on our next trip to Dubuque. This hotel was excellent! The food, amenities and staff was incredible. I can't wait to stay there again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our restful getaway at this hotel. Quiet room, tastefully done, very comfortable bed. Excellent sleep. Entire staff is service-oriented and helpful. Restaurant and Bar provided memorable food and drink. We recommend Hotel Julien Dubugue. High value for money spent.

Lovely hotel, great location with ready access to many restaurants, bars, entertainment. Hotel room was comfortable, upscale in appearance, quiet, great river view. Much thick dust on bedside lamp base and picture frame, literally several month's worth of build-up, but rest of room was spotless. Caroline's restaurant - service was slow at first; was […] seated by the manager, who was not happy or friendly, and even less so when we finally had to ask him for coffee when our waiter didn't appear. He never did bring cream when asked...but food was good. Parking situation was difficult; many bars in area = not many close parking places, and nothing left in rear of hotel either. Had to park on street 2 blocks down. Would return, will recommend to friends, and looking for an excuse to visit Dubuque again...! Mehr

Parking is very poor. Two blocks away to park at ramp. Bar catered to young adults, with loud music. Hard time getting into elevator due to all the college/ young kids there. Had to take stairs to 5th floor due to elevator always being full. Parkig was the worst, trying to carry your bags 2 blocks. Stayed two nights and same problem each night. Cold […] temps and snow. We always stay at the Julien when we are in Dubuque. The suite is beautiful, spacious and lovely. The bed is extremely comfortable...a well stocked fridge with wine and beer and snacks and coffee in the kitchenette. Wish they had a more quiet bar...the disco scene is a bit much!

Classic old Hotel nicely updated. There are several nice restaurants VERY close by. The restaraunt in the hotel has a GREAT breakfast, but I can't comment on lunch or dinner as we just didn't get a chance to go. Downtown Dubuque is a few blocks away and there is a casino is right across the road. We didn’t go to the Casino, so I can’t say anything about […] it. There were a few kind of rowdy (in a good, fun way) folks from the casino that we saw in the lobby, but most guests we encountered apeared to be business travelers, more mature adults or families. Overall, I would classify our stay as very quiet, we had no noise problems at all. We were very pleased with the hotel's cleanliness and there is a coffee maker (free) right in the room, as well as an iron and ironing board. The windows actually open if you want fresh air, and you can change the thermostat as you like. The drapes are very heavy and block out most of the light so if you need it to be very dark to sleep you should be OK. The ONLY negative about our stay was that the mattress had a slight dip in the middle, so we kind of rolled into each other a little. We stayed here and went to Galena which is only 15 miles away, so it is very convenient for that. We would absolutely recommend Hotel Julien and will stay there again when we visit Dubuque or Galena. This hotel is beautiful! Small rooms because of hotel age, but very modern and gorgeous! Conveniently located and awesome price for the quality.

We have stayed here before and we will again. It is conveniently located in a fun downtown area along the Mississippi river where there is a beautiful riverwalk. Our only concern was that we had trouble parking in the designated for hotel or it's restaurant area when it was after 11 because the downtown area was really happening! Next time we'll make […] sure to return to that area by then. It's a beautiful hotel with a ton of character. I hope to return this summer. Mehr

Comfortable beds, heavy robes, great views, and a very nice restaurant with a reasonably priced breakfast menu.

My wife and I loved the Hotel Julien, we stayed for two nights and enjoyed our stay very much. It was in the historic downtown of Dubuque in a historic building that was recently renovated. Everything was top notch from Robes to use, Keurig coffee machines to a very nice pool area.

Was beyond my expectations...room very luxurious! Caroline's was also fantastic! Great food, great service, and we got a complimentary loaf of banana bread for visiting their restaurant. Won't stay anywhere else when I come to Dubuque again!

The whole experience was wonderful. Our room was luxurious with a beautifuly done modern bath with the nicest shower I've ever been in. There is a wonderful bar and restaurant in the hotel and we enjoyed both and were pleased with the service and the food. Parking was convenient and no additional charge. We decided on this route at the last minute but […] next time we will add some additional time to enjoy the spa services. This hotel is 98 years old and if you love beautifully restored buildings and exceptional service, then you should not miss this place - they will even give you a tour if you ask. All of your needs can be met within walking distance from the hotel. The hotel also has a great bar with enertainment. There are several restaurants within a few blocks and a convenience store within view from the hotel in case you forgot to pack something. Our only complaint was the heater in our room was very loud and it woke us up every time it turned […] on. We did not visit the spa but heard great things about it along with very reasonable prices. All in all, it is a beautiful, clean hotel with very friendly staff. Mehr

Great location. Very tastefully decorated. Amazing choices on the menu at Caroline's and the food was wonderful. And last but not least...very affordable.

This hotel is beautiful! I was very comfortable once I got into my room. There were two tiny details that weren't great: the closet was literally a foot wide so I couldn't use it, and they don't have a pantry for items such as juice or bottled water to grab and go when you are in a rush. The restored building itself was lovely. Nevertheless, I would not stay there again for several reasons. The ancient elevator was extremely slow and made frightening sounds. The coffee maker did not work and I had to request maintenance to bring another at 7 A.M. The second worked but leaked water all over the counter. There was no list of prices for […] a variety of snacks and drinks so, not sure if these were supposed to be complimentary, we hesitantly took a couple of items - we were charged 11.77 for one bottle of beer and two sodas. The room was beautifully decorated but provided no sound barrier between the other rooms, the hall, or even the bathroom. It was also very cold (January) and could not be adjusted by the room thermostat. Excellent linens, good quality TV and wifi, comfortable beds. Most of the problems and discomforts arose from the original construction of the building itself which is a given in restored historical sites. Very noisy downtown area with late-night bars across street. Previous guest had set the alarm clock to 6:00 A.M. Sunday morning which I had not checked before going to bed. Could not get it to shut off in the early darkness, so I just got up - very little sleep that night! I mistakenly assumed that housekeeping checked things like that and would have turned off any alarms. Pretty place but would not stay again. Mehr

We stayed at this hotel before the restoration. The walkway to the casino and other attractions made it so convenient.

The hotel was very clean. Our room was immaculate as was the bathroom. We will never book anywhere else when we visit the Dubuque area. Simply put, we coudl not have been more pleased.

Not our first visit. Booked via Hotels.com. Room was small, No closet. They gave a tiny little 6 inch space to hang things. Ah the character of an old place. All in all I like it. They are trying to be classy. Hard to do in today's clime. Not sure it is really appreciated. Not sure they know how to be classy.

We enjoyed a family weekend getaway in Dubuque. The Hotel is beautifully renovated and located right by the river. Lots of places to eat within walking distance and a great museum/aquarium acrossed the street. If you like to gamble the Diamond Jo casino is right acrossed the parking lot on the river. The rooms were nicely appointed and the common areas […] are wonderfully decorated. All the staff were very friendly and willing to help with any request. The pool and fitness center are clean and nicely equipped. The restaurant on the 1st floor is great and affordable. We really enjoyed the stay and all of the activities in the Dubuque area . Mehr

I love going to places where the staff is helpful and cheery. We had the exact opposite experience here. We had a young man at the front desk who was very crabby and we were asking him for suggestions and such and he was very rude. On a positive note, it was beautiful, beautifully decorated, clean and very nice.

Hotel was a quiet romantic getaway from busy holiday season. Lots of stuff to do in the area and galena is a short 15 minute drive away.
