Holgate Hill Hotel - York

Hotel in serious need of rennovation. Toilet had been recently rennovated, but it was small and badly set out. Hotel grounds are run-down. Rooms from 1990s era decor. Road right next to window, quite noisey. Could barely eat the cooked Breakfast, it was pretty foul. York is lovely place and I've been before and I will return - but definitely not to […] this hotel. Enjoyed my stay at this hotel,was a single traveller and only stayed 1 night but was made very welcome. Excellant breakfast with fresh fruit cereal and cooked to order full english.About 10 mins gentle walk from railway station,room for parking in hotel grounds, also bus stop to take you into york centre right outside hotel. We stayed here for a weekend in York. We received a warm and friendly welcome; the breakfast was nice and well organised. The location was ideal, we left our car in the car park and went everywhere we wanted by foot. The room was comfortable, warm, with all the amenities required and if it weren't for the unpleasant smell of tobacco I would have rated […] it better. Mehr

I only stopped in the hotel for one night, I ate out in the evening but did have breakfast. The hotel was clean and had a lovely little outside area which was nice as it was a warm evening. I stopped in a single room and the en suite could do with a de-mould but apart from that it was absolutly fine. Breakfast was served quickly and there was a good […] choice of help yourself croissants and fruit, youghurts and cereals etc. The english breakfast was not fried, i guess thats more healthy but not as tasty! Parking was ample and the walk into york centre is easy and pleasant. Overall I would probably stop there again without shopping around. Mehr

we found the room to be disappointingly small and the floor didnt appear to have been hoovered. In addition to this both the toilet and shower "room" had little or no room to manouvre!

Would recommend with a few specifications. The staff were well mannered and helpful but our room was exceptionally small the shower room so small we did not use, luckily our stay was only for one night. We did ask if a larger room was available but were told fully booked. Rooms shown on adverts were all much bigger, giving a false perception.I certainly […] would not stay in that room again and would tell anyone booking to ask about size of room and shower facilities. Great value for money with extremely helpful and friendly staff. Single room basic with dated decor, but very clean with a comfortable bed. Easy 10-15 minute stroll to city centre and free parking which is a valuable commodity in York.

Short trip to York with my wife (Feb. 25/26, 2011). The hotel (built in early 19th c. by a local wealthy merchant) had lots of character. Our room and others we saw at the time were clean, comfortable and were tastefully decorated and furnished. We dined at the hotel in the evening, the menu, though not extensive, still presented us with good meals. […] The breakfast was good also. The staff were pleasant and attentive during our stay. Car parking at the front of hotel. York centre was 10 mins. walk away. We would stay here again, so hereby recommend this hotel. Mehr

Great little hotelwithin easy walking distance of both the train station and the city centre. Room was quite spacious and comfortable, breakfast was delicious. I will definitely stay here again!

It is a charming budget hotel with atmosphere in York. Staff is very nice and helpful. Good buffet breakfast. It is very convinient to have a free internet in the room. However, there is no desk in the room to put laptop on for work. The hotel is located more than 15 minutes walk from the train station, thus I would not recommend walking with luggage-catch […] a bus or take a taxi. Bus stop is just outside of the hotel. Hotel is outside the old city walls and approximately 15-20 minutes walk to main historic attractions. Mehr

Stayed at this hotel for 2 days in May 2010. Location is good, about 20 minute walk from York town centre and shopping area. Room was small but nice and cosy. Decor was a bit old fashioned, reminded me of visiting a grandparents house! Good quality TV with freeview channels. Bathroom small but ok, good quality toiletries provided. Would stay again, […] just wish prices were a little cheaper as not worth price currently offered. Mehr

This was a comfortable hotel with fantastic service but unfortunately there was not hot water for my morning shower. Aside from that I would thoroughly recommend this hotel. Fantastic breakfast

Booked this hotel when going to the races - very good location and nice place to stay but in desparate need of renovating as was very old fashioned

Staff and service excellent. Location of hotel excellent. £5 taxi ride to race course or town centre. Rooms a little tired but adequate for a night or two. Staff and service made stay worth while

Don't expect a lot for 2stars but it looks nice from the outside and surprisely inside doesnt seem bad either. Only thing stayed in room 6 and the boiler was above us so we couldnt sleep very well! Otehr than that, no problems!

Room was rather shabby but acceptable - we were at the back of the building adjacent to the main hotel so actually had 2 rooms. I slept badly as there was a very brigh security light next to the wndow and a lot of noise from the room next door - this may have been from another hotel though. Good breakfast.

we enjoyed our stay at the holgate it does need updating a bit but the staff were excellent and friendly.we were only in york for 1 day for the races but it was only about a mile to the course from the hotel and around a mile into the centre of york so was a good location. we would definatly stay there again if in the area.

A cosy and friendly old style hotel with excellent freshly cooked breakfast. Quite elegant if a little faded! Cose to city centre (even walking). My room slightly cramped with twin beds and en suite a little dated but my friends room had modernised en suite. Dinner menu very reasonable though we ate out. The hotel whilst extremely welcoming, warm and friendly, is very outdated in terms of decoration. The rooms especially are in dire need of a complete overhaul. The bedding is in blanket form, the shower & toilet are decorated from the 70's, the walls, carpets and curtains although clean were desperately in need of refreshment. Hyggeligt hotel i ca. 15 minutters gåafstand til Yorks historiske bykerne. Der var stille, rent og pænt. Morgenmaden var ganske udmærket med yoghurt, forskellige morgenmadsprodukter og menukort til det varme.
