I would go again there. I don't expect much comfort, just clean rooms and quietness. For breakfeast you can go out to the left about 20m on the right for 38RMB. Opposite the hotel is also a small convenient store. It's about 10 min. walk from Subway-Station "Dongi". Dongi exit B or D going west till you see "red wall hotel", then turn right, then next […] left about 200m. Mehr

"Take it"
Very good and quiet hotel. 15min walk to main entrance of the forbidden city
"Liegt sehr Zentral"
"Best location for artists!"
The staff at Sha Tan hotel is exceptional. I had no trouble adjusting my reservations and tours by phone in advance and even received a personal note from the day staff when I arrived late. I didn't have any meals so I can't comment on that, it is difficult for Taxis to find but I usually stay in that area so I anticipated that. If you aren't familiar […] with the area you might want to request that the hotel send you instructions on how to reach their location from the North end of the Forbidden City in Chinese so the taxi driver can read them. The pillow top mattresses were an amazing change from the usual hotel beds in China, my only complaint about the hotel is that they can't do foreign exchange but the nearby ICBC can take care of that. Along the main road that crosses the North gate of the Forbidden City (walk the opposite direction) you'll find a string of art supply stores, a great art museum and a little shop with fantastic wool and other yarns to bring home for your knitting friends. The small street the hotel is on has a lot of local flavor. Mehr
"regular stay been here before"
Stay was as expected, it’s a cheap hotel, in a less than nice neighbourhood but it works, the people know me now because I have stayed here before. I like the beds and the rooms are good and it’s quiet. No frills no extra service just plain old fashion cheap and nice.
"I expected a bigger room"
The hotel room was smaller then the pictures indicated. It lacked drawer space. The room was hot, but no was to cool it with the remote temp control.I was told the temp control system wasn't working and since it was April the air conditioning wasn't turned on. Opening the window was out because of excessive street noise. I would not stay there again […] because of these factors. The hotel restaurant did serve excellent food. Mehr
"Excellent location"
The hotel location is excllent. It is next to Jingshan Park,. A few minutes walk bring you to plenty of food outlets and convenience stores.
"shan tan"
The air condition was bad. either too hot or too cold. I could not adjust the temperature. Toilet flooded the second day.
The pictures on the website are misleading and make the rooms look more luxurious than they are. The rooms are MUCH smaller in person and are by no means luxurious. When I complained, the manager of the hotel admitted that the photos are taken from "angles" to make the rooms look bigger. The showerhead was not working properly and needed to be cleaned. […] The hotel staff attempted to accomodate us by relocating us to another room, but not without arguing and giving us attitude first. The restaurant was never open, so we always had to make sure we ate before returning to the hotel for the evening. The hotel was standard at best. Positive: Very close to the Forbidden City and Hutong Alleys (nice if you want the local culture experience). Concierge was helpful with directions. Mehr
"Sha tan hotel"
Clean hotel rooms. Pleasant staff but limited English. Hotel situated a bit out of the way. Suitable if you just want to go there to sleep. Not much in the way of restaurant or bar.
"Sha Tan Hotel - perfect in every way!"
In a convenient location, not far from Tian'anmen Square, opposite Jinshan park. Handy cafes and restaurants nearby. The staff were most friendly and helpful, and the room was immaculate and comfortable. Couldn't fault it!
"Sha Tan Hotel stay"
NIce hotel for the price its a budget place if you dont speak Chinese its a struggle to talk to them but if you are on a budget and want just waht you pay for then i would stay again the neibour hood is bad but look beyound that and get to the good places and you will be alright
"Location is good"
If you'd like to choose a budget hotel (not 4 or 5 star hotel), I would recommend this hotel. Location is perfect., close to Forbidden City, convenience store and small restaurants surrounding. The room is clean. 4 star hotel equipment is provided in the room. Overall, if you choose the hotel just as where you can sleep, then this hotel is a choice […] . Mehr
"Great Find for Beijing"
This was a great find for an extremely clean but cheap hotel. When checking in the two ladies at the front desk spoke great English (on checking out - not as much). The furniture in the rooms was just as nice looking as the pictures and the walls and carpet was nice and clean. Clean bathroom and everything you need. I even booked the 2 single bedroom […] with no window and had no problems. My parents were traveling with me and the as well loved it and felt like they were given the deal of a lifetime. The only problem was when we booked a tour to the great wall and Ming tombs. In the end we got everything we paid for but it took a full out yelling match in the car, threating to call the police. The whole tour, from the beginning, the driver and the tour guide was trying to change what we bought back at the hotel tour office. We actually had to drive back to the hotel to settle the matter. However an hour later, they were at it again. I was able to call the hotel and they were translating for me. The guides didn't want to pay for our lunch as promised, entrence fees, nor entrance we paid for at the great wall(they wanted to only take us to the closest one - not the better one included in the package we bought). Again in the end and with force we got everything we paid for but it was not pleasant. I would not blame this on the hotel but would wish they had a more secure tour office in their hotel. I say all this just to be aware and recap everything you paid for before leaving. With that said the night before we did a kong fu show and tickets at hotel were same as at the box office. Nice thing was the hotel provided a driver for free! Great show! A must see! Mehr
"Good stay"
Great location just minutes from the forbidden city. A Staff spoke english well. Bathroom smelled a bit when we got there but stopped once we ran the water for a short time. Definitely a good central place to explore beijing from.
"Adequate room. Good location near Forbidden City."
Adequate room, on the smaller side. Good location near the Forbidden City. Located on a great little hutong.
"Great location"
Happy to recommend the Sha Tan hotel to everyone, best location for visiting the night market, Forbidden city and Beijing in general.
A very nice hotel .there are a modern design and a good furniture in the rooms.very friendly stuff.I would recommend to stay there.
"Great place to stay"
excellent rooms with very comfortable and very clean rooms... NO complaints. staff speaks limited english, but you are in another country. very friendly and helpful. close to all tourist sites. recommend to stay. k from america.
"GREAT HOTEL IN BEIJING!!!"
First of all, this is not for anyone looking for LUXURIOUS 5-star accomadations. This is a nice hotel located in a bustling alley, close (5 min. walk)to the Forbidden City. Room was small (by U.S. standards, equal to European rooms) but very clean. Although staff was not fluent in English, they were VERY helpful & did their best to meet all of our needs […] (help w/ cabs, subway, shopping, tourism, etc...). Although hotel policy is to charge for internet usage, we were allowed to use the internet in the business center for free, NUMEROUS times because we only needed to check e-mail (5 mins. or less). I would definitely stay here again, if visiting Beijing. Mehr
"Good location in a very Chinese street"
It is a well maintained hotel, not 5 starts but good to have a breakfast, spend the day in the city and go back for sleeping. The street is full with small "shops" and people so it is quite shocking at the first time. But you will see the real China there. It is walking distance from the main important points. It is clean, and the breakfast was good. […] Staff speaks English (more or less). Mehr
"Not a bad place to stay"
This hotel is an interesting place to stay. It is convenient to the Forbidden City, The Silk Market, and the hutongs. The lobby looks decent, the rooms are clean. There was some reconstruction going on on the steps when we were there. The problem is the street. There are lots of storefronts and street merchants that line this tiny little street. For […] anyone looking for an authentic Chinese breakfast and experience, its not bad. But to some westerners it would look scary. Plus, because it is so tucked away and the street hard to navigate, some cabbies would not bring us back to the hotel. But I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be close by the major attractions of Beijing and can accept the bustling street out front. But beware that this more like a 2 star hotel that just made it to 3 stars. The low rise building with older carpeting but some newer furniture is a decent place to stay. Mehr
"Sha Tan Hotel Beijing"
i booked 3 twins rooms without windows for our group and we stayed for 4 nights. the rooms was clean and of a reasonable size and the service was very good. The only problems we had was with the location of the hotel as we had to take a few cabs to the hotel from the airport and not one of the cabbies knew where the location of the hotel was even when […] i gave them the printed address! The hotel is situated in a small back street, its was close to a few tourist sites but it was trouble trying to get any type of transport from out the hotel. I reccomend anyone who is thinking about booking this hotel to get a room with windows as it can get very very stuffy. Dinning is not a problem as the back street that the hotel is on has many small restuarants. Dont be fooled by the map as it shows that the hotel is situated right behind the forbidden palace, when we walked there which took around 5 mins we was told it was the exit and the rear of the palace and to get to the entrance was a very very long walk. There is many more choices for the same price range that is not listed on this website but you will have to risk going there first and search when you arrive. Mehr
"Location"
Choose this hotel if you need a cheap hotel close to the major sights in Beijing. They claim to have english speaking staff, but their level is quite low.
"beijing hotel"
Affordable and convenient location but no WiFi @ hotel lobby.
Great local street "color". Nice room in November....No A/C required so not sure if good service or not in the heat of the summer. Good English front desk personnel. Tour office in the hotel was nce. Restaurant in basement very clean and good food and street price competitive. In room mini bar nice but convenience stores within 100 yards made for easy […] supplies. 2 miles from subway so walking with bags will be tough, we did it though. Mehr

"Good value hotel"
This hotel is located very close to the north gate of the forbidden city. It is situated on a very rustic street that has authentic food and interesting sites. While it provided me a fond memory and unique cultural asian insight, the rugged nature of the area may not be everyone's liking. The hotel is a solid 3.5 and understand you are staying in a […] very low income and probably average chinese neighborhood. I would stay there again. Mehr
"Sha Tan Hotel - Quiet, Clean, Lovely!"
We stayed at the Shat Tan for one night after first arriving into Beijing. The staff were helpful, their english was sufficient. Our room was really nice. Really modern and clean. We stayed in their 'double deluxe room'. I can't find anything to criticize about the hotel, it was great. Good prices too.
"For the price, you can't beat it"
Hotel was only a little difficult to find for the driver. On the same block as the Great Wall hotel. It's located on a pretty crowded street of many little shops and street vendors. But there is a 24/7 store just a few steps away from the hotel. It doesn't look it but it has EVERYTHING. And the prices are totally par with a normal store. They even have […] american hard liquor. During the day the street is teaming with people. The hotel is only a block from the back of the Forbidden palace. And at night time... it is beautiful. The room is clean, the bathroom was great. The only problem we had with this hotel is after the first night they had to move us for some reason... they explained it to me and it still made no sense. Though it didn't much matter. They moved us to a bigger room. They have a ping-pong room, which we used. The only thing is they charge to use it. They can also get you train tickets and such for a small fee on top of the ticket price. Though this still doesn't mean the ticket is available. But they can go for you. They can call a taxi for you, though depending on the time and weather it might not be there for a long time... and you have to walk to the main road to get a taxi. And even that sometimes took several mins. Even 10 mins sometimes. But pretty much all of Beijing can be like this. I think you will enjoy the hotel... for this price... it's a pretty good deal. Mehr

"Great place to stay, amazing location"
Can't say enough great things about the Sha Tan. It's in a really amazing location- walking distance from the north gate of the Forbidden City. Also, the little neighborhood street where it is located had excellent street food at all times of the day. All of the Chinese people were really friendly, and some offered English menus as well. Our room was […] very clean, and had plenty of space. Also the bed was considerably more comfortable than the other hotel beds I've experienced in China. The staff was of great assistance, and even let us check in early when we arrived a few hours earlier than expected. They do have internet, but it was only in their business center for a small fee. Also, if you need a cab, the hotel will call one for you or hail one for you. Due to the hotel's close proximity to the Forbidden City, some cabs tried to charge us outrageous prices to take us around the city, rather than just using the meter. Don't negotiate a price with a cab driver like this, just ask the hotel to call one for you. Overall, a great place to stay in Beijing- I'd definitely recommend! Mehr

"sha tan hotel-beijing"
good location in 2nd ring, close to bus service, free internet service
"value for money"
The hotel location is convenient, very close to places of interest such as forbidden city, tiananmen square etc. The rooms are very well maintained on the inside while the hotel does not look very impressive on the outside. the complimentary internet is an added boon. the hotel staff are not very fluent in English with the exception of few staff at […] the reception. the hotel seems to have a vested interest in tourists taking a taxi and dont seem to help much with getting your way around in a bus or metro. That's something you should have researched ahead of landing in beijing. Mehr
"Hotel in the heart of Beijing"
The hotel is very good and clean, it is very near the tourist sights to historical places, very convineante to local transportation.
"shatan hotel backward & primitive"
I have never been dissatisfied with a hotel except this one.Room was clean & good, area not so good. Back alley hutong good for some but to smelly & dirty for me. It took me 4 days to comunicate to the front desk that I wanted to make an overseas call. Only 1 girl speaks english if she is not working you have no hope of getting your message across & […] even she could not understand properly. I did not think this would be as bad as it was, being in a country where english is not even a second languge. Pay extra money & stay at a hotel that bothers to employ an english speaking person. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. Mehr
"Sha Tan Hotel review"
Hotel location: it's about 2 minutes away from the east gate of Jingshan Park and about 15 minutes walk from the nearest underground station, so it's not difficult to get about. The room was clean and comfortable and was maintained well, the bathroom was a decent size. The table tennis/billiards room was not in the same building so we did not see it. […] The staff spoke limited English, but were very helpful, we had some confusion at times but we managed to book a tour through the hotel - which was really good. Mehr
"You cannot trust your booking"
We stayed 3 nights at Sha Tan Hotel. When we arrived Saturday morning at 1.30 am, we were met with a non-englilsh speakin girl, so we had to communicate via a PC translate site. She didn't have the room we already paid for, and after 45 min of translataion writing in the middle of the nights, I got to speak with her boss on the phone. She gave us free […] breakfast and promised us the room next day. When we came back from touring Beijing the day after, ready to change rooms, she gave the room away again! I was furious! After a long PC argument we once again got free breakfast. We also booked a tour through the hotel, and after visitin the first sight, we fouond out that they purposedly put us on the wrong tour, so we didn't get to see the things we already paid for. You cannot trust the people of this hotel. The rooms (with windows) are nice though, but quite hot. Mehr
"Good hotel, bad experience"
The Sha Tan is great value if everything goes right. In our case, we experienced wilful disregard for our comfort from the night manager. Despite having booked for two adults and an 11-year-old, our room had a queen bed and no place for a cot. The aircon was also very weak, not good when it is 34 degrees outside. The manager insisted the aircon was […] fine, and that there was not a single room left in the hotel that would accommodate three people even if we paid. The moment the day manager arrived at 7:30 am, an immaculate triple room and a twin room with space for a cot were instantly discovered, and the aircon in both was potent. We passed a very unpleasant night at Sha Tan for no good reason, and this was never acknowledged by the staff. This is the 'old China' service that I remember from the 80's, and should not be happening these days in a hotel that caters to a western clientele. Mehr
"Sha Tan Hotel - English Speaking FD Please!"
We booked our hotel a month before our trip to Beijing. What you see on the website is exactly what you will get once you checked in. I love the Room, cleanliness and accessibility of the place. It's very near the tourist spots like Tiananmen, Forbidden City, Wangfujing and Jingshan Park. But the only problem we encountered was the Frontdesk employee […] who doesn't know how to speak English. We had a hard time explaining why our flight took longer (9hrs) than the usual 4 and a half hour trip. The flight was diverted to Shanghai-Pudong Airport because of the Zero visibility at Beijing International Airport. And when we finally got in the hotel via taxi, the room that we booked which was Business Standard (no window) was given to another guest. The frontdesk was trying to explain that they were not informed that we are still coming. Even the Airport transfer that we booked was not even there to pick us up. We tried to explain that we paid for the room for that day and we were supposed to checked in anytime of the day that we want. At first the frontdesk told us that we have to stay in one room and wait for 12nn when someone checked out. We still insist that we have to have a room right away since it was paid in advance. As their last resort, they gave us the luxury room / smoking room which was actually smaller than the room that we booked. I think even for a 3 Star hotel they should check the Arrival time of the guests at their Airport. The delayed arrival time was beyond our control. And please, make sure to have an English Speaking Frontdesk anytime of the day. Beijing is a very nice City but they need to at least learn a little English for Tourists like us. (Ritz, Beijing Trip July 24-29, 2011) Mehr
Position Position Position and a very nice small hotel with great service. Only problem is breakfast is poor would be not too bad if the food was warm but that was not the case. The rooms are very clean, staff nice and helpful would stay there again.

"true experience"
I cannot say enough good things about the Sha Tan. We stayed there for 4 nights and loved it. The hotel is located just across the street from the Jingshan Park, which is across the street from the Forbidden City. From the top of the hill at Jingshan, you can see an amazing view of the City. The street that the hotel is on is lined with local vendors […] and restaurants. Everyday we would go to a place around the corner for a breakfast of dumplings, pao's, and tofu. On our way back, we would buy fresh fruit just picked that day. Then we would go to the coffee shop at the other end of the block and rent bicycles - by far my favorite way to explore Beijing. The location of the hotel combined with what was available within the same block made our trip incredible. As for the room itself, we made sure to get one with a window, after reading reviews that it could get musty otherwise, and we were not disappointed. The view was not impressive, of an alley, but having the natural light helped with the jet lag. The room was clean, refreshed everyday, and had no trace of mustiness. It came with a kettle to boil water for our bicycle adventures, and a mini fridge to store it in, along with our fruit. Our trip was amazing, and I truly believe that a large part of it has to do with our starting point - Sha Tan Hotel. Mehr
"Great location, great staff"
The hotel is about a ten minute walk from the Forbidden City, about a half hour walk from Tian'anmen Square, and a short cab ride to Houhai lake and Wanfujing Road. It's situated on a side street which provides a neat window into everyday Chinese life which I liked. The staff were incredibly helpful. Not only did they speak English, but they gave me […] both public transport directions (e.g. to Great Wall) and also were able to write down in Chinese characters directions to various places (as the cab drivers do not know English, and cannot always read Pinyin). The room was clean and comfortable, hot shower, and had AC. Great value for the price. I'd highly recommend this hotel. Mehr
"Shatan Hotel Beijing"
A relatively conveniently located hotel (very central and close to the Forbidden City but far from any tube station so you have to use a taxi if you want to go somewhere else in town). The girls at the reception were nice and helpful, but some of them could not speak almost any english. The rooms are clean and well furnished. I personally stayed in […] a double room with window and also in a room without window. The room with window is very smal. The room without window is the double of its size but well... eh, it's without a window. Overall, a nice place to stay in Beijing and very good price/quality ratio. Mehr
"North American comfort in a Chinese hotel!"
Was really pleased with my 3 nights in this little hotel - the room was very clean and comfortable with everything in good working order. Was particularly pleased with the comfy bed and pillows, windows that opened onto the tree-lined street, and the kettle and coffee maker. The front desk staff were helpful in writing some words and local destinations […] in Chinese which is very, very useful in locating not only tourist attractions but also in finding bus stops and subway stations. On the street near the hotel you will find several convenience stores and a couple of local restaurants, some of which double as bars in the evening. The north entrance of the Forbidden City is about 5-10 minutes walk and the east gate of Jingshan Park only a couple of minutes walk from the hotel. I had the breakfast buffet one morning and it was nothing special - ditto for the breakfast at the restaurant on the corner near the park gate that other reviewers have mentioned. It would have been better if I had just made coffee in the room and kept some pastries in the small fridge. Anyway, I felt the hotel was an excellent value, particularly because of the comfort factor and the proximity to many major tourist attractions. Mehr
"Below Average"
Not worth the money. This hotel is all |for show" Room had a million flies in the washroom and it smelled so bad. Its worst since the room we had, had no window and the AC doesn't even work. Poor customer service, they wouldn't fix it til the next day and still they were taking their sweet time. For the price, you can find better hotels than this.
