Donovan House, a Kimpton Hotel - Washington

Ecerything was great except for the most important detail- room temperature. It was steaming hot all night and very difficult to sleep due to it! Out the ac on as low as it could go and still the temperature was 80 degrees in the room.

This hotel has a unique theme to the rooms, modern chic. This was pursued to a fault in my opinion. the bathroom sink was too large with square bottom which took forever to drain. The shower was kind of neat in that it was shaped like a snail's shell, but it took up too much room for this. Our room faced a traffic circle and was noisy. i requested a […] quiter room toward the inside of the block which addressed the noise problem. This hotel is in a great location, loved the ambiance as soon as you walk in. The whole look of the hotel is awesome, definitely puts you in the party mood. I have heard great things about the Donovan House, and had fairly high expectations. But, I was not impressed - I stayed in a double room on the 4th floor. The hotel overall is dark, I expected […] a bit more light in the room... I was disappointed by how poorly lit it was. My friend and I were going out and found it difficult to see to get dressed. The beds were comfy, and I loved the shower- however our room did not come with the basics as far as toiletries, and enough towels. We were given one bar of soap, a travel size bottle of shampoo & conditioner. The staff however, was very apologetic and immediately brought up more towels, and toiletries. Donovan House is a nice place to stay, but for the price, I would like to see a few added amenities. Mehr

The hotel was nice and so was the staff. However, I was not pleased with the cleanliness of the room after the second night, especially the bathroom. Also, I was disappointed by the fact that everything costs! I have never stayed at a place where the in-room coffee machine costs to use...ridiculous. There are mugs and tea bags and price list indicating […] how much tea costs...ridiculous. The on-site restaurant has limited fare (primarily sushi). Some people may like sushi but for that to be your only on-site option is very short sighted. The elevator is unnecessarily dark. It's one thing to be "hip and cool" and another thing to try and distort the vision of every guest. There also is no ATM at the hotel, you have to walk across the street to the drug store. The hotel is of "minimalist" style, which is OK with me, but my guest room did not have chair, one had to sit on the bed to accomplish any work. The hotel is quite a hike to the nearest Metro station. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, obviously they are well trained.

Hotel personnel were wonderful. However, I've stayed in many wonderful hotels and this is the first time I was asked to pay for the room coffee maker. Disappointing.

The staff at the front desk were always amazingly friendly and responsive, and even went out of their way to help me print some documents needed for a morning meeting. The room was comfortable and clean. The only thing I didn't like is that there was no top sheet on the bed, just a bottom sheet and a duvet. I am sure the duvet cover was washed, but […] I would have preferred a sheet as well. The neighborhood seemed safe, although there were not a ton of restaurants within walking distance for dinner, but at lunch there were many places open. The fitness center was nice and clean, and I would definitely recommend this hotel to a friend. The price was very reasonable for the area. Mehr

I have stayed here on more than on occasion. It's a great hotel with awesome customer service. Close to major clubs but also very quiet and comfortable.

The Donovan house is in a great part of town. There is a Starbucks one block up, an attached Asian fusion restaurant and the mall is about a mile walk in a straight line which is easily managed on a nice day. I don't ask for much, but a bathroom sink that drains and a shower with good water pressure sort of top my hotel needs. These need attention.

I recommend it for short stay.... Just few blocks from the White House.

Stayed one night on valentines day. The staff was very accommodating. Check-in was easy and fast. The valet is expensive but you can get your car whenever and however many times you want during your stay so its very convenient and worth the price. The carpet had permanent stains but overall the room looked clean, the bottom of the bed was scuffed up […] and the leather tacking was falling off. I just think the hotel needs to do a lot of cosmetic repairs so that the rooms will look like they do in the website's pictures. We didn't get to eat at the restaurant or visit the pool but I will definitely stay at the Donovan House every time I visit DC. Mehr

parking is the only one thing will kill you as charges are as high as $42 per night.. people staying at hotel should get discount from hotel itself for parking..

At first glance the hotel and room looks great. The trouble began with a elevator that took forever to go 8 floors. Than the tv remote wouldn't change channels and had a terrible picture. I finally got it on ESPN and left it. The light switches were really confusing. It took me forever figure to out the what switch turned off what light. In the morning […] my sink stopped up while I was shaving. It took about 20 minutes for it to drain. I complained to the manager when I checked out and she immediately knocked 20% off my bill. This hotel is way more concerned about looking hip than a comfortable stay for guests. There isnt anywhere close by to eat or drink. If you on business, as I was, avoid this place. Mehr

We had been stayed the hotel for two nights. It took us almost 45 minutes to check in our room due to room condition, not only heavy smoking smell at the non-smoking room but also big room-lock problem, so that it was requested to change the other room. In the following day, the room hadn't been cleaned at all unti 23:00 midnight whenl we finished […] our whole day activities and was back to the hotel ! It has been a ??? stay since more than 20 years travelling. By the way, the duty manager of the hotel is quite nice to promise to solve the problem when we checked out. Now we are waiting its result. Donovan House is my absolute favorite spot in DC - walking distance to all my meetings, fantastic service, elegant surroundings and charming staff. Why go anywhere else?

I was seriously disappointed with this hotel. For the price I paid I didn't even get half of what I expected. Getting there was ridiculously stupid, parking was out the roof expensive for ONE night, and the front desk staff was flat out rude. For the price I paid for that room I got a tinier room than what I get at a Days Inn for more than half the […] price and my view was of the AC system. To try and get you to understand the size of this room, I could put my back to the end of the bed and touch the wall with my feet. The bed was REALLY firm and maybe stood two feet tall. The sink in the bathroom was clogged, and the floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days. To watch TV, you had to pay for ANYTHING you wanted to watch and there is no wifi so there goes any sort of entertainment. When I was getting ready to leave, the valet told me to call down 15 minutes prior to checking out, and so when I was getting ready to leave my room I called three separate times to the extension they gave me with no answer, then called the front desk and got hung up on, and when I went down to the valet office myself the workers were just sitting in there lounging. I was never asked about if I enjoyed my stay or any sort of customer service questions that should have been asked. I felt like I was just a bill and not a paying customer. If you have money that you can just throw away without thinking about it, sure, go to this hotel, but if you're looking for an enjoyable time at a hotel that makes you feel welcome I'd suggest any other hotel. I had been staying at the Hyatt Regency for my birthday weekend, when i decided to extend for Sunday night, the rate was pricey. I booked a hotel on internet that was comparably priced to the xxxxx first night stay. When I got to the next hotel " the xxxxxxxxx it was a whole in the wall. The bathroom window was borded up with wood, the room was the […] size of a walk-in closet. I was so upset, I immediately left the Hotel and located yet another. The Donnovan House was my saving grace. This hotel was beutiful, the decor was very modern. The rooms had all the ammenities and the view said relax. I am forever grateful to the staff from the bellman up to the front desk. Mehr

Very satisfied with hotel and service.

The hotel itself and the staff are great. Double rooms were over booked so they gave us a suite for no extra charge. Staff were always polite, smiling, helpful and efficient. The room is really nice and comfortable. Location is good, close to metro stop, walking distance to the White House. My husband and I stayed at the Donovan House for one night to see the sights in D.C. Parking was an issue right off the bat, be for warned...the garage that is meant for hotel guests wants to charge $42 to park your car for 1 night alone. There are other garages in the area but make sure you pay attention to their hours because some are closed or open […] at strange times on the weekend. The hotel staff were very friendly and provided great customer service. They even provide a list of restaurants within a few blocks that they recommend. As far as going to see the museums and such; yes it is a straight shot to the mall...but bring those tennis shoes and be prepared to walk! It's about a mile (if not a mile and a quarter) from the hotel to Constitution Ave. We weren't complaining about the exercise, it just gets a little tiring. The location however is great, it didn't take us long to get in or out of the city. Oh, and for the occasional "whoops! I forgot to bring this!" moments, there's a 24hr CVS across the street. Mehr

This hotel offersgracious and great service, is a nice walk to the Metro, and is a wonderful place to come back to at the end of a day of working and walking. Many things delight the eye--from the flame outside the front door (you can see it a block away at night, so you know you're nearly there as you approach the hotel) to the nautilus-shaped shower […] stall. This is a comfortable, welcoming place for the smart set, whether you're on the hip side of "smart," or on the intelligent side of "smart." It shows what seems to be a continuous loop of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (yes! James Stewart), in beautiful black-and-white on one of the lobby walls. The only minuses: the sink drain was sluggish and the weak water pressure required a longer time in the shower. The restaurant offers an excellent variety of drinks and Asian fusion food. Get the Shanghai Mojito on the first night of your stay; it will set you up for an excellent visit to the District. Mehr

Very close to the Metro and much cheaper to use it from Reagan - convenient to use - great restaurant with best hot and sour soup I have ever had! Inexpensive restaurants within walking distance

We spent the weekend in DC for the Army Navy football game. The Donovan was great...the staff was super friendly and helpful. The room was spotless. The decor is modern with a circular shower, huge windows and comfortable, cool furniture.

Staff was very nice but I agree with previous reviews about the shower water pressure being a bit light. Small rooms but not a problem since you hardly need to spend much time in them. Beds were comfortable, room amenities were fine. Couple of strange spots on the floor and handmarks on the leather "cocoon" bed frame which left a bit to the imagination, […] but it's a hotel, so you have to expect many previous people were once there. For the price I have really little negative to say. If it were a five star hotel and a price tag to boot, then it would be a bit different, but for the location and obvious upgrade, I would recommend it. Mehr

While visiting D.C. I had the opportunity to stay at Donovan House a Thompson Hotel. I cannot say enough great things about my stay. The staff were more than curtious, helpful and provided a level of service that I would say is unlike any other. The hotel had a modern feel with "old world" service. Anything that I needed was promptly provided and without […] question. The location was perfect situated at Thomas Circle it was in walking distance to all attractions with front desk provided me with maps and directions to where I was going when departing in the mornings. There is a 24hr CVS across the street which I found to be very handy. Once again I cannot say enough great things about Donovan House and have been telling anyone who will listen since returning home. Very Impressed. If I am ever to stay in D.C. again I just hope Hotels.com will still be offering a deal through there website for this Hotel! Truly made my trip top notch... Mehr

Great location, great staff, modern, clean, new, and loved the contemporary style. Only downfall was the extreme price of parking. $42 per 24 hrs. If you aren't driving no worries.

My best friend and I stayed here because of it's location - and the awesome roof top bar in the summer. It was nice, but not great. The beds were hard and everything was small. The ceilings were low, the furniture was short... it was a bit strange. But it was clean and nice. It's a very euro hotel.

Great place. Great staff. Only downside was the stains we found on the sheets and blanket. It wasn't a major concern and the rest of the room was perfect.

The Donovan House was convenient to the metro and to the bus. The interior design was modern, clean and charming. I have never seen anything like it and I loved it. The room had a cool shower and the bed had a marvelous canopy. The staff could not have been nicer and more of a help regardless of what we wanted to do. I'll start off by saying the staff was very nice. Now.. The valet parking was pretty high even for DC. The bathroom in the studio king had no fan. The shower was cool, but less than I expected. I have a thing for modern bathrooms. I like them when they're high tech and fancy. I thought that that's how this bathroom would be. If you leave the door to […] the bathroom open you get cold because there's no door on the shower, its a spiral. And they shower head is pretty small so it doesn't cover you completely. If you close the bathroom door it gets hot in there, fast. And it takes a very long time for mirrors to defog, even if you open the door. There are other mirrors in the hotel room you could use to do your makeup but the lighting is very poor if you don't open the curtains, but that doesn't do you any good if It's dark out. The sink in the bathroom is massive and cool but leaves you little to no counter space. The bed was ok, a little hard for my taste. And if you're a light sleeper like me, the constant noise of traffic and honking will keep you up. I didn't sleep well. The mini bar was astronomically priced, which is the case with all hotel mini bars but they were also charging for the coffee, which is free in most hotels. I won't be staying there again, I'll probably choose the mariott down the street next time. No wonder I got a half off deal from hotels.com. Mehr
