The Hotel Palacio is very conveniently located in the Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo, making it a great base from which to explore the area on foot. Beautiful, well maintained older hotel: great staff, clean rooms; prime location, just steps from a super market and ATM; excellent security. They even have their own taxi drivers stationed just down the street. Call ahead before you leave and they will meet you at the airport. Our room was in the older wing: 20-25 ft. high ceilings, 2 15 ft. high windows, […] a built-in closet with 15 ft high doors, mahagoney trim with a brick colored tile floor, gigantic black wrought iron chandelier and a totally rehabed modern bathroom with plenty of hot water--they even have a library! If you like the Spanish Colonial period architecture with the arches and open faced brick you will love this place. Looks like your on the set for the filming of a Zorro movie. We stayed at this hotel on Mar 12 & 13, 2012. Easy to find when driving into Santo Domingo, especially since it was our first time driving there in our own rental. (last time we hired a cab to drive us to Santo Domingo) This hotel is in an excellent location. The rooms are very "colonial" although they could use screens on the windows so you could open […] them up and leave them open during the night. Our friends stayed in the room above and slept with their air conditioning on, and froze all night. We kept the air off, windows closed and it was very warm in our room. The breakfast included in our room was excellent! We hired a cab to take us to a few places...very reasonable price to stay with us for almost 6 hrs! The courtyard was nice to sit in, while we sipped on a cold cervezas (purchased at Jumbo, a supermarket 1/2 blk away) and were surrounded by greenery! A nice stroll down the blocks of stores and restaurants that Monday evening and the next morning. We wish we could have planned for a longer stay. Will do that next time! Mehr

Excellent place and centrally located

I would definitely stay here again. It is conveniently located, right off of the main walking path, El Conde. The staff was very nice and helpful. English was not great for some but still very friendly and willing to help if they could. Good full breakfast which was included, not some typical continental breakfast which amounts to not much to eat. Free […] wifi in the rooms but very spotty. Pool on the roof. The air conditioning in my room worked so well, I had to turn it off periodically; my friend's room, not great but I think it's because he tampered with it. Unfortunately, they could not fix it so the room remained hot. Overall, I think the right place to stay if you want to be near the historic area. Mehr

To begin, the location of the hotel is fantastic, you can walk to all the historic sites. The hotel rooms are ample and comfortable.

The breakfast is wonderful, the location is perfect for walking to good restaurants. The hotel is charming. The room is very clean, the staff friendly. Our only discomfort is very hard beds.

I couldn't ask for more from a hotel. But if you are accustomed to and expect a Hilton this place is not for you. It is in a superb location in the heart of Zona Colonial. You are within easy walking distance to many of the sights of this district. The room prices were surprisingly affordable considering the hotels prime location. Hotel Palacio is exactly what we were looking for -- an authentically Caribbean-style boutique hotel that feels like home but with all the amenities of a Hilton. A centuries-old building that has been converted into a beautiful and traditional hotel, Palacio retains all the character of its former life as the residence of a Dominican president. Five […] floors of beautifully decorated rooms (art, chandeliers, original antique lamps) surround a stone courtyard, where we enjoyed breakfast each morning. WiFi and breakfast are included, two money-savers that make the low cost of the hotel even more incredible. The room was immaculately clean and the cleaning staff prompt. The location could not be better, either. Palacio is in the Colonial Zone is steps away from the shopping of Calle El Conde and a few minute walk from the fantastic restaurants in Parque de Colon and the square around Alcazar de Colon, Christopher Columbus' palace. The staff were incredibly friendly, from the helpful receptionists who offered advice on where to go and what to do to the security guard stood in front of the hotel (probably not necessary in this safe neighborhood, but offers some reassurance to uneasy tourists). There were a few disappointments -- breakfast wasn't the best and more American than Dominican (scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon mostly, and the same every day); the pool was frigid, even on 85-degree days; and the shower was poorly designed, so water sprayed out onto the bathroom floor each morning. But all in all we are happy to give it five stars out of five, and if and when we return to Santo Domingo, we will definitely stay at Palacio. Mehr

The hotel is a real architecure masterpice. Well equipped and quite newly upgraded. (I guess) It really gives the filing how it was in the overclass of the colonial wolrd. Definitlly worth to stay a couple of days at the end of your vacation. Imre

I have stayed at the Palacio in Santo Domingo three times and have booked my associates for this hotel as well on two other occasions. This is one of the finest hotels in Santo Domingo and has so much of the flavor of the Zona Colonial. I highly recommend this hotel for both business travelers who need convenient access to downtown, as well as vacationers […] and tourists who want to experience old Santo Domingo with all its rich history and architectural character. The staff was very pleasant and courteous. The hotel itself was rather nice and clean. I like the quainteness of the hotel. lots of privacy and very secure specially when you consider that it is in the heart of the city. The bathroom was large and confortable; the room itself was large, though the furniture was vary sparse for such a large room. I think […] that a little more furniture in the form of seating arrangements as well as a little more detail in the placement of it, can definitely take this hotel to another level all together. We thoroughly enjoyed Hotel Palacio. We spent a lot of time on one of the balconies overlooking the beautiful patio, something unusual for us to do. The full breakfast was satisfying but not exceptional. The orange juice was of the canned variety. The rooms are rather spartan but very comfortable and quite beautiful. I recommend the hotel.

I would have given it 5 star all around except that unfortunately my sister forgot her nano ipod on top of the bed and any attempt to recuperate it has been in vain. Our emails are not answered, phones calls are being brushed off etc. At the time we checked in they requested our email address. When my sister asked for what reason they said in case we […] left anything in the room they would be able to contact us. For this reason we were very hopeful that she would be able to get her ipod back but no chance of that. Location great for historic area and shopping. Clean, well maintained common areas and room; central courtyard and building beautiful. Breakfast simple but ample. Our big complaint is about staff – some great, some rude or at best apathetic. Certain front desk staff didn’t acknowledge our presence in the lobby and were hardly cordial when they did attend […] to us - after having to get their attention. Even though front desk are responsible for customer service, the maintenance men and guards were the most polite and helpful of all; they couldn't have been nicer and maybe should be at the front desk! It was clean and roomy and had cable w/several english stations. Breakfast was included and adequate (rolls, eggs, meats, cheeses, cereal, yogurt, coffee, tea, juice, potatos, pancakes upon request). One thing that got me (I'm ashamed to admit) is that I thought the hot water was a bust...b/c "C" is not cold, but stands for "caliente" or hot...and the […] other knob was missing it's label (I would have figured it out if I saw an "F" on the other), so I had the no label on full blast and then complained that I had to take a cold shower. Good location, close to many restaurantes, museums and other places of interest; with a friendly staff; an attractive, classic style hotel

Stayed in this hotel for 4 nights and it was the perfect choice for my trip. Not only was it right in the middle of the colonial zone and super close to everything I wanted to see and do, the hotel staff were super friendly and helpful. They helped me with every question or need I had regardless of the hour of day. I had a standard room and it exceeded […] my expectations. The room was comfy, the bed was nice and the shower was a godsend. I had been travelling throughout the Dominican Republic for over a month before I arrived in Santo Domingo and this was by far the best place I had stayed up until that point. Breakfast was what you would expect from these type of hotels. Good and Simple. I would definitely come here again if I were to return to Santo Domingo. I highly recommend it! Mehr

Hotel Palacio is an excellent hotel. I highly recommend it to anyone who is planning a trip to the Colonial Zone of the Dominican Republic. The location is awesome. You're literally feet away from El Conde, a major shopping street in the area. There are also numerous delicious restaurants in neighborhood. The interior is beautiful, with very spacious […] rooms. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The free breakfast is delicious. The hotel is also very safe. The rooms lock with electronic key cards. After a certain time the staff chain locks the front door as well (there is always someone at the door so you can be let in after the door has been locked) If I'm ever in Santo Domingo again, this is where I'll be staying. The rate for this hotel was reasonable by standards of Santo Domingo. The room was clean. Bed a little hard but OK. Staff very friendly. No English.

Ideally located in center of the colonial district. We had a well furnished, comfortable and quiet room facing lovely inner courtyard. A great value for the moderate price.Breakfasts were satisfactory, nothing special.

This is in a great location, half block off the Conde, right in the heart of the Colonial Zone. There are security cameras everywhere, and I mean everywhere, including at the pool, and I personally don't like being watched and taped while I'm swimming, but if you want tight security, that might not bother you. Lots of hot water, and AC worked great. […] Mini bar in room with very very reasonable prices (80 cents for bottle water, $2 for bottle of Perrier, $1 for a coca cola, as I say, very very reasonable considering what many places charge). Bathrooms come with hair dryer, makeup mirror, bar soap, and generic brand shampoo and conditioner (so if you're picky about hair products may want to bring your own). Breakfast is included, but did not vary from one day to the next, so if you are staying a while, could get boring very quickly, though they will make you scrambled eggs or pancakes if you ask. Its a basic breakfast buffet, eggs and bacon in heated containers, chopped fruit, cereals, oj and coffee or selection of teas. I wouldn't stay here specifically for the breakfast as its nothing special by any means, but its nice to be able to grab a quick coffee or juice and some toast in the mornings. Basically, its a clean, pleasant, safe hotel in the heart of the Colonial Zone. I probably wouldn't stay again just because of the fact that I don't like having my movements tracked via security cameras while I'm on vacation, but if that's not an issue for you, this could be the perfect place for a Santo Domingo vacation! The hotel personnel where very nice and accommodating. When circumstances required that we extend our stay, the same rates applied. The hotel decorum and atmosphere reflects the colonial heritage. We highly recommend it.

The hotel is wonderful and the full breakfasts are huge with anything you could ask for. We loved the location - we could walk to several restaurants in the evening as well as tour the old colonial section. Our only complaint was that th beds were hard but everything was very clean and comfortable. We would highly recommend it.

Hotel Palacio has a pleasant open interior patio and garden area, which was nice to see after the rather drab street entrance. Location is convenient to historic district, market, and the harbor. Clean room with wifi. Restaurant selection limited (only one vegetarian selection and they were out of two items we ordered). Breakfast did not begin till […] 7:30 on holiday weekend, and staff not willing to give us even some bread or a banana as we headed out for several early excursions. Mehr

The hotel Palacio in Santo Domingo is centrally located, a few doors from the "shopping street" with no car traffic, and a couple blocks from many interesting sights. The hotel is in the colonial style, very charming. They served a nice breakfast, inclued in the price, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We would stay there again.

Experienced a great stay at Hotel Palacio. The hotel has a lot of character and charm, located in the center of the Colonial Zone. Entire hotel was very clean. Rooms were large, updated with flat screen TV. Completmentary Breakfast was very good. Location was KEY, centrally located. 1/2 block from grocery store, 1 block to shopping, 2 blocks from Cathdral […] and dinning. Short walk to Plaza de Espania. Which have wonderful outdoor restuarants! After dark I would suggest a cab ride to and from. Front Desk staff was informative and very helpful. This was our first time staying there and we liked it much better than staying at one of the chain or casino hotels out on Avenue of Washington. And it was at least 1/2 the price. They have ocean view but you have to take a cab everywhere you go. Which is anywhere from $7 - $20 depending on which cab driver. This Hotel Palacio had just as nice rooms, but centrally located. We will definately stay there again, as we come to Santo Domingio several times a year. Mehr

This is a very interesting old building. Check-in was fine, but front desk employee at night was very rude. Breakfast was OK, with employee not rude, but with lack of smile until you tip them, their face will change. Very strange, Dominicans are very friendly and very nice all the time. The hotel was very much what we expected for a local hotel in the Old Town. In order to experience the local feel, you give up some of the more modern amenities and comforts. The location is great and the staff was friendly, but certainly not a Hilton or even a Hampton. It is less than a block away from shops, restaurants, etc. but sits just far enough […] away to avoid the noise and traffic when it times to wind down. Mehr

Avoid this one if you have other options. We chose Hotel Palacio for the price, and got what we paid for. The building itself has its historical charm (minus the creepy, colonizer-worshipping portraits on every wall). The room was spacious and comfortable enough, especially with the air conditioning on, and the grounds seemed clean, but we found an […] open box of K-Y jelly under the bed, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence in how clean things really are. Bathroom supplies were low quality and watching the television was a constant battle to change channels or adjust the volume. The staff was not rude but those at the front desk clearly couldn't be less interested in guest satisfaction- don't expect much help here. The pool was closed for 1.5 out of our 2 days there. The breakfast was included in the hotels.com booking, but don't get your hopes up--think low-rate continental breakfast, a sad, browning fruit salad, and burnt, flavorless eggs should you order them with your "full" breakfast. If you can handle the price of other hotels in this area, seriously consider doing so. Mehr

Very well located in the Zona Colonial, with most attractions nearby. A beautiful place with a 24hr-reception and security door (although I never saw any trouble outside). Rooms are large with gorgeous decor and great beds. Powercuts and intermittent hot water are not a problem here! Great swimming pool for daytime use, even has a bubbler system!

The Hotel is very nice and pleasant. It has a nostalgic feeling. The staff was very good and friendly. However, this was my second time staying at the Palacio and both times they had the same issue of the Internet access not working for the hotel. As quaint as the hotel is, I will not be able to stay there again, as Internet Access/connectivity is a […] necessity. The services was down for 2 of 4 days. Mehr
