Oceanside Hotel - Vancouver

I came to Vancouver for a conference, and found out that I had to come in a day early the week beforehand. The conference hotels were sold out for that night, so I got this place on hotels.com. What a find! I wish that I could have spent the whole week here! It is a family-owned business in the very best sense. The place is clean, comfortable and *affordable*! […] The neighborhood can be "edgy" at night, but it is not dangerous. It has kind of a Berekely/ Cambridge feel to it. Spectatcular water views and walks await just a block away too! I intend to bring my teenage daughter here next year, as it really was a great place to stay and, had I not already prepaid the reservation at the conference hotel, I would have booked my whole week here. The outside of the hotel gives the impression that it is rundown and nasty; however once inside the actual room suite, it's like an apartment. There is ample space in the suite, and the location is one block from the waterfront. The outside area looks a bit sketchy on the main strip, but there are plenty of great places to eat and places to shop. Looks a little rough on the outside but the inside of the hotel has clearly been renovated (besides the windows). Service was very pleasant and helpful. Parking lot was incredibly small but was great to have. Neighborhood is good. Close to bay, park, restaurants and a couple of bars.

This is a no frills hotel but very friendly service and the location can not be beat and the price is right. Could have been a little cleaner in the bathroom and the bed is hard. We still some how loved this place.

Not fancy, but a nice hotel in an excellent area of Vancouver, excellent rates compared to the ave. Vancouver cost. In a quiet corner next to English Harbour & Stanley park, convenient public transportation to other parts of Vancouver. It was perfect for me.

Originally a 3 story walk up apartment; older, quaint and serviceable. Good value for the dollar, excellent location and more space than the average hotel. Very accommodating and warm front desk service.

Nothing fancy, it covers all the basic and some. The best thing about this hotel is its location.

I was sickened to have paid so much for an unclean room that could seriously use a good fix me up! The door didn't even lock!!!!!! YUCK I would NEVER recommend this place to ANYONE! And I would NEVER go there again!!!!

If your looking for a basic hotel this place is fine. Full kitchen helps with the food cost while traveling. Lots of space so good for families. Great location, close to grocery store, many restaurants, bike rentals and Stanley Park. Downside is the shower is terrible. Very little spray and it's easy to get burned. The inside looks much better than […] the outside but rooms showing their age. Overall fine if you are looking for a basic hotel in a great location. Mehr

My family with 2 teenagers stayed at the Oceanside for 3 nights. I booked it for the price and most reviews I read were positive. I have to admit that when we first pulled up I was a bit apprehensive because from the outside it looks quite old but when we got our room we were quite pleasantly surprised. The hotel is old and some of the furniture in […] the rooms look old but it is very clean and has had new carpeting and paint throughout. Our suite was quite large with a full kitchen and dining room, a separate bedroom, a living room with pull-out couch for one kid and a cot for the other. There only seems to be one or two people working there but the service we received to get a cot, bedding and towels was great. One of the complaints I read in other reviews was the lack of elevator which is true but if you are OK hauling your bags up a flight or two, it is a great hotel at a great price for Vancouver. The location is half a block from the busy Denman Road (every type of restaurant you could ever want) but even being that close, noise was never a problem. We were 2 blocks from the English Bay beach and 2 blocks from Stanley Park; a very convenient location for sightseeing. Our room was in the back corner overlooking the alley; not the best view but we did not spend a lot of time in the room. They also have a very small secured parking lot under the building so we did not have to pay extra to park the car in a private lot. Mehr

This hotel is unfortunately tired and rundown otherwise I would recommend it as it does have plus points. Single glazing made it quite noisy and the fridge was also noisy. The windows were mouldy and the furniture old, although the bed was comfy. The general cleanliness seemed OK and it was roomy but generally could do with a good update as the location […] is good. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Good recommendation for chinese food at Won More across the road. Delicious! The building is definitely showing it's age and needs updating. There is no elevator so it was quite difficult to carry heavy cases upstairs. Although the suite was not dirty there were areas that could have had more attention paid […] to them but I think this also reflects the age of the hotel as well - ie stained grout, peeling paint on windows. The suite was spacious and had a comfy bed. Internet was free. The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from downtown Robson St shopping and one block from English Bay. A lot of local restaurants to choose from. A bit overpriced for the condition of the accommodation and no extras were included in the room i.e. tea/coffee, shampoo etc (only hand soap). Mehr

A bus ride from central Vancouver with luggage, although you could walk without. Very close to Stanley Park and English Bay. Lots of cafes and a restaurant nearby. Staff very helpful, but some aspects of the room in need of a facelift.

Staff was friendly, but the hotel is in bad need of renovating. The room we had was on the third floor and there is no elevator. Dragging suitcases up that many stairs is a pain. There was a coffee machine in the room but no coffee. And there while there was soap there was no shampoo in the bathroom. There was a new flatscreen TV in the room. This was a great location, within walking distance to several attractions. Room was clean and large. It was a previous apartment building so there is a bedroom and family room with kitchen. Older apartment building that has been converted into suite hotel. Rooms have been updated and are , for the most part, comfortable and clean. The location is great--near Stanley Park , English Bay and lots of restaurants. No elevator so you need to tote your luggage to the second floor. One complaint--our sink drain didn't drain correctly and we repeatedly […] asked for someone to fix it. Never did get it fixed. Also the door lock was very shaky. I wouldn't have been happy to stay there for more than a few days I'd they didn't fix that. Great location and good value however. Mehr

This hotel has no elevator so you will pick up your bags and climb stairs. The staff was very nice and helpful but the hotel need serious cleaning and remodeling.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 days. I booked for 4 adults but was given a suite with just 1 double bed. When I complained, I was told that the hotel was fully booked. We made do with a suite with sticky kitchen floors, teeny tiny kitchen, grimy bathroom, beds with hair on it still and yucky carpet. We were given an extra cot but feared of bed bugs as […] everything in the suite seemed quite dirty. Complained again the next day and was then given their "penthouse" suite. It was more spacious, slightly cleaner but then still dirty. Stay away from this hotel if you value a good night's sleep without fears of creepy crawlies. Mehr

it has parking space, and a lot of room in e\the room. it is not fancy but a very good deal for the cost.

Friendly staff, although the lady I first met at the reception was overwhelmingly friendly. Nothing bad, perhaps she is of a quiet nature. Location is excellent. Rooms are spacious. Kitchen is good. Ideal for an excellent morning walk by the sea for those whose who are forced to get up early because of jetlag. The proximity to Stanley park is a a big […] plus. Staff very helpful and friendly and did the best they could with an old hotel. These were one bedroom apartments with a kitchen and appliances,so very spacious for three of us. The bed's were very hard and we noted there was hair on the blankets. No bedbugs here!! We picked this hotel because of the locality . Very safe neighborhood, a block off Denman, […] close to Granville Island, Robson, Coal Harbour and even downtown is within walking distance. Mehr

Location Location Location! Hotel was old but nice. I will go back.

First of all, it was OK when I checked-in, and the room was large and comfortable. The location is fine. However, this hotel is the worst hotel in the world! It happened in the morning when I was leaving. We had to check-out the hotel early in the morning; it was about 7:30(so it was not very early). There was nobody at the front desk, so I rang the […] bell in front of the main entrance because of parking deposits. After that, one guy came to the front desk, and said, "S! Whats your problem?" I said that I would checked-out. Then the guy said, "S! Did you wake me up without reason? S! What the F! S! S!" I was very surprised because I thought I was a guest and I was really a guest, but he yelled at me and said "S!" for many times. (Even Hotels.com doesn't accept these inappropriate words for reviewing.) I thought I was in bad dream, but it was real. Never ever think you want to stay in this hotel! This hotel is really bad! You can easily find better hotels around this hotel. Mehr

This was a nice clean hotel with friendly staff and very large suits for the price. The outside of the building is not that nice, but they offer free parking and the inside of the rooms are nice for the area. I would recommend staying there and will stay there again when I visit Vancouver. Right on the waterfront and close enough to the gay district […] that you could walk, bus, or cheap taxi. Mehr

Room space was large and the hotel was accessible to shopping, Stanley Park and getting over to West and North Vancouver. The parking was cramped and if your driving make sure you have a small car. For a four story building there were about 8 parking spaces. No frills. You could smell cigar smoke walking down the hall to the parking area. We got a cot […] and it was stained badly. They did change it right away. The ceiling was really thin because the first night it sounded like someone was running overhead for about and hour and another night it sounded like kids jumping off a bed and it was loud. Great hotel, doesn't look like much from outside but the inside is nicely renovated. Overall, extremely satisfied.

My wife and I are both 28. We had a wonderful stay at Oceanside hotel for a single night while visiting friends in North Vancouver. The hotel is converted apartments that are definitely outdated from about 70's era styling and finish. The space was plentiful, the kitchenette basic yet functional, and the bed was comfy enough. I can imagine staying there […] for a week or so would be just fine! The walls are certainly thin and the building has the typical old apartment complex woes of loud water pipes. I'm a light sleeper, though, and shutting the door to the bathroom was enough that I didn't wake up from ANY noise overnight (saturday into sunday). The front desk help was wonderful and nice and she loved our dog, a 1.5 year old black lab. Parking was a bit iffy at first as they share a lot with the next door apartment complex. SOmeone was in my assigned spot that night, but the hostess gave me a remote to the garage (deposit in case you don't give it back or lose it) and I then had secure overnight parking. 1 block away from the water. Plenty of eateries around. VERY conveniently located to shopping and Stanley Park. We look forward to a long-term stay in the summer when we can go walking in the city and the park with great weather. I highly recommended this place if you aren't picky, want to bring or buy food to make at your hotel, and have a dog (no pet fee, dog friendly staff!). No elevator. If you have a ton of luggage, call ahead and ask for a ground floor room. Mehr

Can't beat the price or the location! I really enjoy staying at the Oceanside Hotel. I have been there two times now and I know i"ll go again.

We had no idea what to expect but this hotel is in a really great location. Walking distance to the beach, Stanley Park, multiple grocery stores and a ton of awesome restaurants. Hotel staff was always helpful and pleasant. Only downsides: -Bathtub stopper did not fit drain -Bathroom amenities were very cheap and minimal -No elevator (not a big deal […] for us) Highly recommended hotel overall. Mehr

Outside appearance was misleading. Seemed dated. Once we walked into lobby, remodeled and nice. Inside was nice and very comfortable with kitchen and family room area. TVs were nice as well.

Afforable hotel in very beautiful, quiet neighborhood. Very accessible to many places in downtown Vancouver. No hassles, friendly service and clean, simple rooms. No frills, but that's OK with us. This is where we'll stay whenever we visit Vancouver again.

nice quiet spot. one block to english bay beach, 2 blocks to stanley park. Lots & lots of great restaurants and shops. Old building-but our room was fully remodelled and new. NO ELEVATOR ! So, for seniors or handicap- main floor only. I really enjoyed our stay, and hope to return for a longer visit.

The location of this hotel is great, just steps from English Bay and the Seawall, great Dining all in walking distance. The neighborhood in the west end is also quieter than being on the main streets, very little traffic at night.

Great location , one street back from beach anad around corner from trolley bus and great cheap restaurants and shops. Hotel very old has no elevator or staff to help you with your bags. We are quite elderly and found it extremely difficult getting bags up narrow stair well to the second floor. Room opened out to front street , had no air conditioning […] and was noisy until early morning. Apart from this hotel being in a great location and within walking distance to Stanley Park it does not have much going for it. WHAT YOU GET FOR A 2 STAR RATED HOTEL IS A GREAT LOCATION AND FREE LOCAL TELEPHONE CALLS AND INTERNET. Mehr

Very helpful staff, wonderful location just one street away from English Bay and good resterants. Two blocks from Stanley Park. Rooms are of a large size with full kitchen. We were so happy with this hotel. Would use again in a heart beat.

Excellent location!!! Looks just like a two big bedroom apartment with a small kitchen and a big living room area. Definitely worth the price.

Sam and family were very helpful. If I were going to Vancouver again I would stay. I have told several friends to call me to recommend a place to stay. Not luxury but convenience makes up the diffierence.

Overall, our stay at the Oceanside went very well. The rooms are not fancy, but they are very spacious. It was really more like an apartment. The best part of this hotel was the location. It is close to the water, Stanley Park, and a plethora of ethnic restaurants, only steps away. The proprietor was most friendly and helpful also.

The Oceanside Inn was located a block off the major roadways so it was nice and quiet, unlike many other hotels. The bed in the main room was very comfortable and so was the bed in the pull out couch. This is a nice place.

This was a great find. The location is outstanding - close to Stanley Park and the beach, as well as numerous quality restaurants and other attractions. The staff were very nice and helpful, and the room was clean.

The location of this hotel alone make it a bargain. A short walk to Stanley Park and English Bay as well as Hundreds of restaurants within a few blocks radius allows you to be car free and enjoy some of the best sites in Vancouver. We were there during an unusual heat wave and this made the rooms a little uncomfortable since there is no A/C. However, […] the staff was excellent in accommodating us with fans which made the nights much more comfortable. Upon returning home we realized we had left our Computer adapter in the room. Sam went out the next day and sent it out on his own time at no cost. That's out of the way service from an excellent front desk man. Overall I would strongly recommend this hotel. Mehr

Small hotel with friendly reception staff (my 2 year old daughter called one of them a "nice man"). The first stay on arrival in Vancouver was in a spacious suite in the corner of the building on the 2nd floor. The sea could just be seen between the buildings actually overlooking the sea. There was a large flat sceen TV in the living room. The kitchen […] was clean and in good condition. It contained the basic dishes, pots and pans and cutlery as well as the fridge, stove and microwave. Our second stay at the end of our holiday was in another somewhat smaller but otherwise similar suite. There is no restaurant in the hotel but the adjacent street is full of cafes and restaurants. We catered for ourselves with groceries bought in the supermarket 2 mins walk away. Besides being convenient for shops and restuarants, the Hotel location was reasonably quiet and great for accessing the beach and path along the sea front around to Stanley Park. The hotel does not have the range of facilities and services found in many larger chain hotels such as a concierge, gym or swimming pool, but it suited us well to pay a lower rate since we did not want such things.
