Wir waren sehr, sehr zufrieden mit dem Hotel. Die MItarbeiter sind sehr freundich und zuvorkommend. Bei unserer Abfahrt bekamen wir sogar noch einen Frühstücksimbiss in die Hand gedrückt, weil wir schon vor dem eigentlichen Frühstück los mussten. Vieln Dank nochmal für die freundliche Aufnahme!

Das Macdonald Roxburghe Hotel befindet sich im Zentrum von Edinburgh in der Nähe von interessanten Bars, Clubs und Pubs. Mein Einzelzimmer hatte ein komfortables Bad und ein sehr angenehmes Bett. Das Zimmer war jedoch so klein, dass ich das auf Rollen gelagerte Bett zur Seite schieben musste, um den Kleiderschrank zu erreichen. Dieser enthielt nützliche Dinge, wie Bügeleisen und -brett, tea-making facility und einen Zimmertresor. Das Personal war sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit und half mir bspw. beim Ausdrucken der Bordkarte für den Heimflug. Die Umkleideräume für Pool und Sauna sind etwas in die Jahre gekommen und könnten häufige Reinigung vertragen. In der Sauna muss aus Hygienegründen Badekleidung getragen werden.

Lage
Grassmarket hotel befindet sich mitten in Edinburgh. Folgende Sehenswürdigkeiten sind zu Fuß erreichbar: Witchery Tours, Camera Obscura and World of Illusions und Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre. Zu den weiteren Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Nähe gehören: Edinburgh Castle und Gladstone's Land.

"Top Lage aber nicht unbedingt ein Top Hotel"
Wir waren über Silvester in Edinburgh und waren mit der Lage des Hotels mehr als zufrieden. Wir konnten direkt von der Streetparty nach Hause gehen und brauchten dafür nicht länger als 5 Minuten - wirklich top!!!! Das Hotel selber ist nicht berauschend, aber dafür ok. Unser Zimmer war sehr klein und das Bad extrem kalt, aber dafür war der Zimmerservice […] gut und die Rezeptionisten sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Leider sind die Wände des Zimmers sehr dünn und darum hat man jedes einzelne Geräusch, das sich am Gang abgespielt hat, miterlebt. Das dazugehörige Pub hat zwar jeden Abend Live-Musik, aber davon konnte man - zum Glück - im Zimmer nichts hören, obwohl wir fast drüber gewohnt haben. Das Pub ist übrigens sehr nett. Aufgrund der Toplage zum Castle und zur Old Town und New Town würde ich diesem Hotel 4* geben, weil dadurch die anderen negativen Dinge wettgemacht werden. Mehr
"Zimmer definitiv zu winzig auch für UK speziell EZ"
leider hatte das Zimmer eher Zellen Charakter. o.k. EZ sind meist in UK recht klein aber die Winzigkeit, Dunkelheit und die stickige Luft waren das Geld trotz seiner Zentralität nicht wert - ausserdem heißt zentrale Lage in EDI wohl auch Hen and Stags parties und die entsprechende Mülllawine und Dreckigkeit am Morgen - na ja wer's mag .... Das Frühstück […] im angrenzenden Pub zu bekommen war ne langatmige Geschichte- auffallend dass Paare schneller bedient wurden !!!! Da hatte ich auf dem Rückweg für die Hälfte des Preises ein wesentlich gepflegteres und größeres Zimmer mit netterem Services in einem B&B mit 10 minütiger Busanbindung in die City... Mehr

Sehr zentrale Lage. Abends läuft dafür immer was im Gebiet Grassmarket...nicht ganz ruhig, was klar sein sollte!
"Gut gelegen, aber in die Jahre gekommen...!"
Das Hotel liegt strategisch birlliant in der Innenstadt von Edinburgh. Leider ist es schon ein wenig in die Jahre gekommen und notwendige Sanierungen/Renovationen wurden wohl grosszügig hinausgezögert. Nichtsdestotrotz ein guter Ausgangspunkt für Nachtschwärmer, wenn man auf die Sauberkeit/Einrichtung keinen grossen Wert legt!
Pluspunkt: Das Hotel ist super gelegen, mitten in der Old Town. Man ist überall schnell zu Fuss. Minuspunkt: Kein Lift. Das Einzelzimmer war winzig, die Dusche komplett schwarz verschimmelt. Fenster liess sich nur mit grösster Kraftanstrengung öffnen, keine Seife im Bad. War froh, nur eine Nacht dort zu sein. Ich empfehle das Hotel nicht weiter.
"Good as long as you know what to expect"
This hotel is centrally located amongst many of the tourist spots. It is old and quaint - which means some of the fixtures, etc. are in need of some repair. The internet is only available in the lobby and wasn't working at all while I was there for 4 nights. I did find my room door ajar, because the housekeeper wasn't careful, when I returned at the […] end of one of the days, so be careful with valuables. I suppose this kind of thing is to be expected so my only real criticism is that they forgot to give me a wakeup call on my last day which (had I not also set an alarm clock) would have made me late for my plane. But in spite of it all, it does give you the local flavor of this wonderful city. Mehr
"Perfect location"
Right in the heart of Edinburgh.... If you are one that basically only uses the hotel to sleep in then this is perfect, otherwise you may find it a bit small and the wifi did not work whilst we were here.

"Basic hotel - good location"
Right at the corner of Cowgate / Grassmarket this hotel is at a great location. The room was very small, and the heater in the bathroom did not work, but we got a space heater to cope with that. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

"Noisy neighbours"
The pub adjoining was noisy. The barrels were loaded up late at night up for the next day's delivery (100 barrels). The shower room/toilet was so narrow - width of the toilet seat. The shower room/toilet door could not open properly as it was stopped by the bed. The decor was a bit sad. Curtains were dirty. Not what I expected from a city centre hotel. We were unimpressed by lack of welcome on arrival No offer of help with very heavy baggage No direction to room Room and bathroom was in need of fresh paint walls were stained. Throws on bed stained. "Moldy"
I love old buildings and a little character never hurt anyone. This hotel, however, was very disappointing. The shower and bathroom had some disgusting black mold all over. The paint on the ceiling in the bathroom was chipping away from the moisture (really, really chipping away). The carpet seemed like it was 100 years old and had never been vacuumed. […] The bed had a dip in it as though a 400 hundred pound person had been laying in it for years. The tv was tiny (not that I go to hotels for the TV) and the reception was terrible on it. The Grassmarket was the final hotel my husband and I stayed at after a 20 day long vacation. The location was fine, although I would have preferred being a bit closer to Princess Street. The hotel was a let down. We don't need anything too special, really just a place to crash after exploring, but all of the mold and the overall poor upkeep of our room left a lot to be desired. Mehr

"Grassmarket Hotel, Edinburgh"
I have used this Hotel twice now, the second time wasn't such a pleasant experience, but it is very central, and reasonably priced.
Very good hotel in a good location. Room was lovely but more attention to the cleanliness of the shower cubicle should be taken. Everything else was great and I would be more than happy to recommend this hotel.

"Cheap Hotel"
The location of this hotel is great, but you get what you pay for. The front desk staff are very helpful. It is within walking distance of all the Edinburgh sites. The elevator only goes to the first floor. So if you are on 2 floor or above, you have to carry your bags through halls and up stairs. This is annoying. I had a single room. It was very small. […] The bathroom was small. The room was clean but old. There is free internet in the lobby and in a room on the first floor. There is a bar on the first that is very loud. I could hear it in my room at night, but I turned on the fan in the bathroom, and it blocked out the noise. If I went back to Edinburgh, I would spend a little more for a nicer hotel. I felt safe, but if was overall a pretty cheap hotel. Mehr

"BEST location"
The receptionist had our info ready when we arrived rather late in the evening, about 10pm. We had to literally go through an indoor maze to reach our tiny hotel room, though. However, the bathroom was amazingly clean, and the room was adequate. The staff were really nice, getting us taxis, info, holding luggage, wake up call, etc. The location was […] the BEST. It is in Old Town Edinburgh, very short walking distance to the Royal Mile, and the Grassmarket area. Very close to Edinburgh Castle as well, and about a mile from Holyrood house. It is quite a distance from the Bus station, you could walk, but with luggage, it is too far. We took a taxi to/from the hotel & it was NOT expensive (in May/June 2010). The hotel could use some updating, but it is in Old Town, so I imagine that could be quite difficult. We had a decent bed, hot shower, and good service in the perfect location. "Good Hotel in Great Location"
This is a good hotel for a budget stay in Edinburgh. It's not cheap, but it was the least expensive I could find. Edinburgh is not a cheap city. The hotel was in a great location within easy walking distance to all of the sites and only about a 10 minute walk from the bus that goes to the airport. The hotel was in good condition and my room was comfortable […] except for the mattress. It was by far the worst mattress I have ever slept on. It's hard to describe, but there was a huge hole underneath my knees where it sunk down and the entire upper half of the mattress sloped down into this hole. "Cheap and cheerful"
Central to Edinburgh with a bargain price to boot. May not be the trendiest hotel but what would you expect for the price!! Bargain if you only need a bed to get your head down after a night out...
"Not impressed"
Although THE Grassmarket hotel is in a really convenient location, the hotel itself does not match up. The reception area was filthy, and although the staff were very polite and helpful, the condition of the hotel was extremely poor and vastly overpriced.

This hotel is in a great location...close to the Royal Mile, not far from the train station, and right in the Grassmarket Square. The front desk service was good, and there was a room to hold my luggage until my room was ready later. However, the hotel is somewhat dumpy. My room was small and a bit dark. this hotel is in the Grassmarket, a happening section of town with lots of great places to eat and enjoy fantastic european beer. the people were friendly, the room was clean, the bed was SO comfy and it was within walking distance of some great areas. stay at this place and enjoy being in the heart of Edinburgh!

Our room faced the main street. I had read the warnings, but didn't heed them. It is very noisy at night from patrons leaving the clubs below. The plaza in front of the hotel is pleasant, and I like being in the older part of town. Quite a walk from Waverly - all uphill. "Needs Improvement not a great value"
We loved the location of this hotel. We were within a 5-15 minute walking distance of every attraction that we wanted to see. However, given the price that we paid, and the terrible quality of the hotel, I believe we could have stayed at one of many other hotels in the area and had a better stay. The rooms are small, with the worst beds I have ever […] slept on in my life. The mattress felt like a pile of rocks with a sheet pulled over it. We did not recieve any of the wake up calls that we had scheduled, and there was not an alarm clock in the room. There were not elevators that accessed all of the floors/sections of the hotels, so it made it extremely difficult to move luggage upstairs and downstairs. I did not feel as if our belongings were all that secure in the hotel room, as the room could easily be broken in to. We shoved on the door about 3 times after having locked it, and the door opened. In addition, the hotel was fairly dirty, old, and in need of lots of renovations. The reception at the hotel was not that great, and we were treated pretty rudely by several of the receptionists. I also did not like the fact that you could not take your room keys with you, you were required to leave them at the front desk, otherwise you would be charged a massive fine. I read all the reviews on the hotel and still decided to stay there. I've stayed at hostels and figured I could deal with just about anything. As others have said the hotel is a little run down. I could live with that. When I got off the elevator onto my floor, I noticed that the floor was on a slant and when I reached my room the effect made me very […] dizzy. Also my room could have been a little cleaner. The location is terrific however, i stayed at another hotel in that same area earlier in the week and feel there are other options out there. "not great!"
There were a number of things that didnt impress me with this hotel! The look of the hotel from the outside wasnt great, but I didnt mind as it was fairly central. The first thing we noticed was the use of "ramps" on the stairs on the first floor, apparently you can't get to our second floor room using the lift, you need to go to 1st floor and take […] the stairs! The next thing we noticed was the view from the room...it was of a brick wall and had bushes between us and the wall! beautiful!!! The TV didn't have a remote, there was no bed side lamp and music played loudly until 1am from the bar!! Mehr

My husband and I stayed at the Grassmarket only one night, fortunately. The room was so thick with the smell of cigarette smoke that it was actually hard to breathe. The room was tiny, the bathroom was even smaller, and neither were very comfortable. The staff was friendly enough, but offered no help when we asked for advice on a place to eat. The pub […] downstairs was awful and the live music screaming through all night only added to the experience...it was awful and we would never return or recommend that you do. Mehr
