The Reading Lake Hotel - Reading

Wir hatten ein Zimmer mit 2 Queen-Size Betten gebucht, das mit Foto im Internet angegeben war. Vor Ort wußte man nichts von solch einem Zimmer. Wir bekamen dann ohne weitere Erklärung ein großes Zimmer mit Ausziehcouch....Die Matratzen sind sehr schlecht. Die Fenster waren stark verschmutzt, der Ventilator im Badezimmer ziemlich verstaubt - funktionierte […] aber. Das Essen schmeckte sehr gut, auch das Service im Restaurant war sehr nett. Das Frühstück ist empfehlenswert. Lediglich der muffige Geruch im Erd- bzw. Untergeschoß stört. Mehr

Das Hotel ist schwer zu finden. Die GPS Angaben sind nicht zutreffend

This hotel is in a great location - close to Reading but away from the noise you get staying in town. Stayed in a ground floor room with the balcony at water level. Very quiet except for the occasional sound of the trains - and the geese. The room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, but the decor is a little tired and you can see where the trouser […] press used to be. Apart from that, all facilities were present including iron and ironing board withot having to ask at reception. Will definitley be back. Mehr

Generally not a bad hotel. Could do with some up dating. A little off the beaten track but really nice grounds. Good price for the Reading area.

Sat Nav and routefinder direct you wrongly - so please ignore them. A number of the roads they take you to are gated and you cannot get across to the hotel. It took us an hour to find it from the junction of the m4 as a result. Despite 3 calls to the hotel, only on the 3rd call did they tell us to take the a33 to basingstoke and follow the signs for […] the 'copthorne' (the previous name of the hotel!!). It then took us only about 10 mins through narrow country roads from the m4 junction. The hotel is nice enough, the rooms are spacious and clean but a little tired, but overlooking a beautiful lake. The rooms had twin beds, hairdryer, tv, table and chairs and coffee making facilitites and a patio overlooking the lake, some of the electric lights didnt work though. Front desk staff were useless to be honest and as we got there a lot later than planned, the kids were tired, and the reception staff were very slow, we were there for atleast 15 mins as they couldn't find our reservation despite giving them the paperwork, and then didn;t have a room made up for us as a family, so they gave an additional twin room instead which was a quick solution at least for two tired children. They also took a 2nd payment for our booking (my husband hadn;t realised we had already paid!)... but they said they couldn;t reimburse the next morning but told us to check our statement! I think if we had received a better service from the front desk this would have been a better review, but I guess I'm still annoyed. Mehr

its ok, off the beaten track nowhere near rading town centre so avoid if you actually need to get into reading by any means other than your own car. Its a tired hotel but at least its quieet stuck in the middle of nowhere. would eat in the bar rather than the main dining room.

This is a warm and comfortable hotel in a beautiful location by some lakes near Reading. The rooms look out over the serene lake with duck and geese. The hotel has a pleasant character. The only slight down-side (but not a problem bearing in mind it is in such a peaceful place) is that you have to drive down quite a narrow and wiggly road to get to […] the hotel. Although not far from the M4, we never heard any traffic noise. Mehr

Hotel is out of the way and difficult to find, but the lakeside setting is impressive. I remeber staying here several years ago and finding it relaxing and positive. Booked the inclusive breakfast and dinner deal. Beware, you will actually pay more than if you pay a la carte. The charge for dinner as all inclusive was £5 more than the allowance on […] the menu - and if you order the more expensive items you will be charged a very mean £ for £ supplement. Not good when you re eating reheated bread and butter pud with instant custard from a packet ! Otherwise food is average. The dining room was freezing and uninviting and the staff were often poor English speakers. Promised cable tv but the only non-terrestrial channel I could get was Russian. On the whole overpriced, even at discount rate. Mehr

This is basically a nice hotel, based in/around a lake with balconies on every room. The facilities in the room are more than adequate, although the room we had did probbaly need a deep clean (we made the mistake of moving the bedside cabinet so that we could push one bed against the wall for my daughter's security and I don't know what someone spilt […] there but my god it stank). The room was slightly shabby, a bit of peeling paper, and the front desk staff when we arrived were clearly not loving their job, but everyone else was very nice and so was the hotel in general. Unique in that most rooms having a usable balcony overlooking a nice lake with swans/wildlife. However due to the lake there are masses of midges and therefore spiders webs coating the majority of the exterior. Everything felt a little dated and it desperately needs a refresh of the rooms. Parking is great but be warned about the drive getting to the […] hotel, there is a extremely narrow single lane bridge, I watched a transit gingerly cross it rubbing both wheels on it at the same time. The hotel is very smart-looking both inside & out but is very off the beaten track. On the day we arrived it was raining heavily and the small roads leading to the hotel were so flooded our car almost didn't make it! In addition there are no local shops/pubs/facilities so you are effectively trapped and as a result the food & drink was incredibly over-priced! […] We drove 3 or 4 miles into Reading & went to a local shop rather than spend a fortune there. The other main complaint was that the hotel was advertised with a pool but non existed. Staff were also thin on the ground and not particularly helpful. On the good side, it was an attractive hotel and had a nice outlook over the lakes. Mehr

At arriving at the hotel we were shocked that the hotel carried a 4 star rating. It seemed that they haven't bothered to keep the hotel up to date with modern conveniences but still seem happy to charge modern rates. The double bed gave me backache. The bathroom had mold and the toilet didn't ever flush on first try. The hotel food had big portions […] but it wasn't very good. It didn't even have a card entry system for the room that nearly every other big hotel has. On the positive side, the view from the room onto the lake was really good. Mehr

My family with 2 children stayed here in Aug/2011. Very comfortable, spacious and most of all very clean. Good value for money, and the service was prompt and great. Theres nothing bad about this hotel at all, the kids really enjoyed feeding the swans and the ducks that lives in the lake. Legoland is 20 minutes by car. Highly recommend this hotel.

Just staying for one night we liked the hotel and the location. If you're looking for a quiet place, you're right here. We would definitely come back.

Recently stayed for business, was conveniently located to the offices, bit of a drive into the centre of Reading. Hotel itself was in a little need of a revamp as did look a bit tired in places. However the location and view from the rooms is excellent. The staff were very friendly and willing to help and the countryside in which it is located is great […] for a quick post work jog. Although the standard of the hotel was relatively high and the location very quiet, it is in real need of a general renovation. Cobwebs all over the underside of the balconies did not make a good impression. Bed very comfortable, bathroom OK. Restaurant good. Price/performance good

it was extremely difficult to find the hotel particularly as there was no sign pointing at THE READING LAKE HOTEL..It was only after we arrived there and saw the literature in the room that we realized the signs pointing to COPTHORN HOTEL were actually the clue ! The water in the shower would suddenly get boiling hot every 15-20 seconds and scorch you […] ,extremely dangerous for a child to have a shower there.Some of the tiles on the edge of the balcony over-hanging the balcony below were loose and dangerous.The room temperature in the room at night was very very high but did not want to leave the balcony door open as short walls between the balconies. Found an Amazon pod in the room in a very easily visible position and handed it to the reception who did not seem to be that interested or grateful.Had the room been serviced properly the pod would have been found by the maid. The price of tea and coffee in the bar area were ridiculously high,£2.95 for a tea bag ? I hope you will find some of these comments helpful. Mehr

Good hotel, room very clean and comfortable with a balcony with lovely views over the lake. Bathroom a little tired but plenty of hot water and large towels. Staff were attentive and very pleasent. The buffet breakfast was good but the bacon could have done with a little more cooking. Overall a pleasent stay at a nice hotel.

I needed to stay close to Reading for a business trip but this hotel is a £15 taxi ride each way. It has recently left the Copthorne brand. Reasonably comfortable room. The wifi is poor and non existent in the bedrooms, only the lobby area. I specifically checked if wifi was available before I reserved and was told it was. Not ideal unless you want […] to sit in reception working! There was no air con in the room so in the June weather i needed to open the doors over looking the very picturesque lake. The trade off was being comfortably cool vs the number of midges in the room. Overall, not impressed and I wont be back. Mehr

myself and carole both thought what a ideal place to spend a few days, will return for another few cosy nights at this peaceful getaway, staff are very welcoming :-)

I work and often stay in London, hotels are not only expensive but noisy and of variable quality. Reading copthorn being a short 25 minute train ride from Paddington is a great alternative for those who want excellent service, peace and quiet and to be able to take a break away from the hussle and hussle of central London. There are a number of reasons this does not rate 4 stars, it's tough to even give it a 3 rating. The rooms are very sparse, uncomfortable bed, very minimal ammenities (no bottled water, no iron etc). The shower had very little water pressure and apparantly the temp settings are cool or scalding...the change in temp happens all on it's own. The place […] is in the middle of nowhere and difficult to get to- apparantly there was a road construction change that took away immediate hiway access making the hotel very remote. Food in the main restaurant is good, but not in the lounge area. I checked out early even though I prepaid....I think it's non-refundable because most people would book another hotel closer into Reading once they realized where they were if they had the opportunity. This hotel is very convenient for business for me, and the hotel itself is reasonable although a bit tired looking in the public spaces and en suite bathrooms. It's handy having a gym, even if it is stuck in a draughty, far corner of the hotel. It is also unsupervised which made me feel a bit vulnerable as a lone female traveller. Food & room service […] are fine (although expensive) - better than a lot of similar places. However they have a poor process and general lack of care over lost property. I left something in my room when I checked out and called them that evening to report it. No one ever came back to me, despite chasing. Eventually when I stayed again, it became clear that they had probably just thrown it away, and the receptionist wasn't even particularly apologetic. This is not what I'd expect from a hotel of this class/star rating and it is evident that clients are not the priority for them. Not the worst place to stay by a long chalk, but hang on to your posessions for dear life! Mehr

A little Oasis in a busy area, very pleasent views of the lake, friendly staff. Worth astay.

Hotel was okay for 2 nights stay but no Swimming pool on site whaich was bitterly dissapointing as on there wab site it says there is!!
