We were welcomed pleasantly on arrival and upgraded to a suite from a double - the hotel was empty but it's still good service. The suite was big with 2 bathrooms and 2 flat screen TVs bigger than we have at home. The location is not optimal - their sister hotel just down the road is better with a boardwalk directly to the beach - but there's a nice […] sheltered pool that looked good for kids. From the moment we arrived to the moment we departed we were treated in a very friendly manner and with the utmost respect. The service in the restaurant and bar areas was excellent whilst the spa staff were knowledgable and attentive. In our opinion this hotel lacks many of the refinements of a 5 star Hotel. we have no complaints about the suite which was enormous the cleanliness was good, the staff very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was fine. We only ate in the hotel on one occasion in an evening and had the set menu, this was served well and the staff were charming. Unfortunately […] there was no atmosphere as there were only six people dining. Our main complaint was the pool area and gardens, these were in need of some TLC, the pool bar was shabby and very concrete, we never saw the pools (there are 3) or the pool surrounds cleaned during the week we were there, the tables by the loungers were grubby, the hedges were in need of cutting and although the lawn areas were cut whilst we were there the 18 hole putting green was a joke. We have stayed in other 5 star hotels on the Algarve where the attention to detail leaves nothing to be desired, here there was little attention to the detail in the small areas where you would expect more from a 5 star hotel. We would not recommend this (or any other) hotel to friends as we all have different tastes, we would however, if asked, give an honest assessment of how we found it. Which we have tried to do above. Great location. Hotel very stylish and rooms very spacious and comfortable. Excellent pools and gardens. Breakfast was very good and waiters attentive. This hotel would have better ratings if it was not supposed to be a 5*, which from comparison against other 5* hotels in Europe it really is not. Good points: the suite (deluxe sea view) was spacious and comfortable with 2 bathrooms, 2 TVs, 2 balconies, kitchenette and a very nice sea view. The selection of food offered at breakfast was very comprehensive […] and fresh and the pools and surrounding area were clean and spacious. Bad points: the buffet was closed from 17/9 ('end of season'#, also the beach and Esplanade restaurants were closed in the evening. Room cleanliness was adequate, but not 5* #grout in bathrooms was badly discoloured, tables were not dusted etc#. Service in the lobby bar was very slow in the evenings. The beach may be 500m as the crow flies, but there is not direct route to it as the rear gate is broken #and looks to have been that way for a while#. The jacuzzi does not work. Long queue to check-out as only one person on reception. We were not able to arrange a late check-out as we were told the hotel was full. There is little outdoor seating around the bar and what there is very uncomfortable #'designer' acrylic chairs#. There is one small shop and one taverna near the hotel. Otherwise, the nearest restaurants are at the Marina or in Albufeira - neither of which are really a viable to walk to at night as much of the route is along a fast road with no pavement and poor lighting. Amazing hotel, superb service, nice quiet residential area, delicious breakfasts, family friendly, amazing Sao Rafael beach 5-10min walk got upgraded to the suite with the amazing view free of charge!! The hotel is a great find, the rooms are in wonderful condition and the staff and services were exactly what you'd expect for a 5 star hotel. From the looks of other hotels in the area, this one seems to be one of the better ones. The food is not bad but there are some nice restaurants in the area that you can try for the same price (and sometimes cheaper). […] The only downside is that the hotel is not right on the beach. It's actually a short walk away (but the road is not a straight shot so can be easy to get lost). There is a shuttle bus from the hotel down to the beach so it works out fine. Lastly, when booking your room, request a sea view . . . you don't want to stay on the other side of the hotel that faces the road, there is truly nothing to see there. Its much nicer to wake up and see the ocean in the background! Overall, would certainly stay here again and would recommend it to my family and friends. Mehr

The hotel was amazing, truly fabulous and well worth the 5* rating! Despite arriving a few hours prior to check in, the hotel staff were very helpful ... offering to keep our bags safe whilst we explored the surronding area and checked out the hotels facilities. When it came to check in we were upgraded (a lovely surprise)! Our room was incredibly spacious, […] clean and had all the amenities we required plus it came with a great view! The buffet breakfast is amazing - the best I've seen, the pools were very clean and the hotel provided towels for use whilst in the pool. This hotel is rated 5 star. Well some parts of it are and some not. Our room, we were upgraded to 2 bed 2 bath suite with amazing view, was utterly fabulous and the beds so comfortable. Only problem no internet at all in rooms. Breakfast delicious. Didn't try buffet but a la carte excellent as was the beach restaurant. Main problems pool cafe more like […] 2 star no ambience motorway cafe, gardens poorly maintained pool not always clean.But the only internet was the free wifi in hotel reception and that wasn't very good. No taxis apparently Albuferia has only one taxi company so often had to wait an hour even if you booked in advance for a certain time!! The hotel has its own mini bus but this doesn't run after 5 to town why don't they knowing how bad the taxis are run it even if they charged a couple of euros would have less irate guests!! There was an excellent restaurant nearby but only found out by accident. Hotel could do with some brochures of local attractions, trips and restaurants!! The a la carte was only open fri, sat and sunday and this is peak season!!! The staff were all lovely and if they could sort out these problems would be a great hotel. Mehr

We researched alot about Albufeira before booking this hotel. We were honeymooning and wanted to have a tue Portuguese experience. We chose it because it had its own beach, was walking distance to the marina, and a short taxi to old town. The hotel was impecable with such a helpful and friendly staff. The actual surrounding area was amazing. We discovered […] a gem of a resteraunt (A Sardinha), at the neighboring beach, with its own private beach and AMAZING food(best steak of my life). A must see. And our favorite experience of the whole trip was a sunset boat cruise with the guys of Algarexperience/ Belize Bar at the marina. Stayed for 6 days with wife and daughters 16,13 & 11. Coiuld not find a fault with the hotel . Breakfast was fantastic despite poor reviews from others.( If you go down @ 10:00 when the rest of the guests are there there has to be a wait) The 3 pools are spotless as are the comunal areas with smart helpful staff always about to answer questions politely.The […] gym at the Relax centre is not worth bothering with so just take a week off and recover. The hotel is too far from the centre of Albufera to walk,( as a family we like to walk) taxis cost 5.40 to 8 euros depending on the driver. We had to get 2 taxis because there were 5 of us meaning 4 taxis there and back. Guy in the City bar (out of the hotel turn left 200yards on the right) gave me a card for 7 seater company that only charged 20 euros there and back. City bar good for cheap lunches and drinks. My daughter and I have just returned from a short four day break at this hotel, we were celebrating our 50th and 25th birthdays! We wanted a relaxed, sunny break with comfort, good food, quality spa and a touch of luxury for our 'girlie' time together. We were delighted with everything about the hotel, the surrounding areas and quality of service from […] the staff at the hotel. We arrived late at night and found regrettably that the balcony door to our suite was broken, we were immediately offered an upgrade to a family suite for the evening and by the next morning the original suite (which was beautiful, spacious and very clean) was ready for us to move back into, complete with mended balcony doors. Whilst some geusts may have found the disruption annoying, we took it in our stride and did not allow such a minor blip to upset us or our stay. This is my second stay at this particular hotel and we will be returning geusts for sure. Mehr

Fantastic hotel, looks very modern and stylish. Service is excellent and so was the quality of food. Very pricey but hotel food generally is. Facilities are good, the pool was CLEAN! The pools were filthy which despite a complaint on the first day was not rectified (although I don't think this was the staff's fault). This hotel didn't meet our expectations of a 5 star hotel which the Sao Rafael is billed as. The grounds around the hotel and areas around the pool were in need of maintenance, plenty of vegetation and weeds growing where you wouldnt expect. Sprinklers coming on around the pool in the middle of the day soaking the few people who were around the pool. […] They must have cut back on maintenance staff. We stayed in a double room, and it seems that all the double rooms are in bad locations, we had a view of the busy road directly outside. Our double room was quite small but tastefully decorated. The food in the hotel was expensive but nice, we had lunch there most days. The free high speed internet advertised is non existent, there is free wifi in the lobby area but it was unusable as it was so slow. The staff were helpful at all times but our initial instinct when arriving at the hotel was that it was lacking any atmosphere and we still feel that having stayed for 4 nights. Mehr

The hotel was definitely worth the wait on the shuttle bus. Staff were very friendly and could answer questions about the hotel as well as the local area. Breakfast was also very substantial..however get there at 9.30 latest to avoid unforeseen looks from the breakfast staff! When it was first built it would have been impressive if coupled with 5 star service. However there is very basic wifi access that performs very slowly. This is only available in the guest office and lobby!! The pool heating was broken, the spa dirty and broken, the wood decking around the pool is well over due for an oil and smells really mildew. There […] is no microwave in the suites and you get 4 tea bags only for your whole stay!! ( if you need anymore you have to pay!!! Overall, my family (2 adults + 2 kids) loved Albufiera the best of our Spain/Portugal trip. The Sao Rafael is definitely a 5-star hotel from a design and architecture perspective. The HUGE two-room suites with TWO bathrooms were incredible, especially considering our past tiny-room experiences throughout Europe. The breakfast and 'A la Carte' restaurant […] meals and service were also superb. Unfortunately, the hotel is experiencing some hiccups in their services. Internet Wi-fi was intermittant and slow when you could get it...really slow. The indoor pool and hot tub were so cold that they were unusable, and the hot tub was missing several knobs and cracking in places. For a family, this was a big miss for an Easter trip when the kids want a pool. Luckily, we could go down to the 'sister' hotel, which was better in quality, though equally as 'stuffy' for a family. Also, the beach down the hill was amazing, with gorgeous rock formations, cliffs, caves and sink-your-toes-in sand. There was a kitchenette in our room #YEAH!#, but ridiculous signs stating that you couldn't use it for ANY food purchased outside the hotel. What's that about? Finally, the showers needed a good hearty bleaching on the grout lines. The hotel is a couple miles from the 'action' of downtown Albufiera, so you'll want a car to catch the fun there as the hotel only runs 3 shuttles/day. Mehr

This was our second visit to the CS Sao Raphael Hotel, we were just as impressed 5 years on. This hotel is perfect for a relaxing out of season family break - especailly from a Mum's perspective. The hotel offers fantastic accomodation in the form of very spacious suites. We opted for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suite, our children aged 10 & 11 had plenty […] of space, with their own beds, the balcony over looked the sea. The breakfast is faultless - even comes with a glass of bubbles. There are two beaches within walking distance, only one restaurant was open (it was late October!) but sitting eating fresh fish and watching the kids dodge waves was the perfect unwind. The spa hotel has a indoor swimming pool, perfect as we were there during a spetacular storm. The hotel never felt crowded due to the space and decor, the staff are friendly and really helpful. The hotel is great if you are looking to simply relax and not looking to be entertained. The quality of food in the main restaurant and pool area is superb and whilst generally quite young - the staff make up for any lack of experience with a wonderful approach to customer service and really do put themselves out to do their best. We elected for the […] half board option and quite frankly it was a godsend. The hotel is not conveniently located for a wide selection of restaurant or bar options (unless you are happy with snack style food) so bear in mind that you will probably need to allow about 10/15 Euros for return taxi rides if you want to venture further than the CS Atlantic or Chinese across the street. Other options are probably only a 15 minute walk but in heat/humidity you feel a bit clammy at the other end! We stayed in a two bedroomed family suite and it was really comfortable and well maintained by housekeeping staff. As with all hotels that have predominantly tiled flooring you can't escape the furniture scrapping/general noise of your neighbours but it's just a picky point from a light sleeper. The two things that earn this hotel deserved compliments are the service and food quality. If CS operated hotels outside of Portugal/Madeira this experience would certainly make me consider another one of their hotels in future. They could possibly benefit from introducing a little more 'personality' and may find their bar a little busier if they considered their pricing. Mehr

This is a good hotel with reasonable food and the accomodation is very good. Be warned though, it is in a very quiet neighbourhood with not a lot around. The food in the hotel at breakfast and the buffet in the evening was adequate for 5 star hotel. A little more variety on the poolside options would not go amiss though. Because of this we elected to spend the most of the holiday by the pools, of which there are three. The kids were happy and there were some good activities arranged to keep the youngest occupied. The staff were very helpful. I would only recommend this for a week maximum to unwind and read a few books. Travelled with my wife and 3 and half year old son. Kids Club - Depending on staff either very good or very very bad. Pools - Good sizes and well set out although a heated one wouldn't have gone amiss. Not a great choice and same every day Resaurants-Only used the pool bar, selection was good but opening times not great when you have small kids as Reastaurant didnt open until 7:30pm and pool bar stopped serving its nice menu at 4:30pm Rooms-We had a suite which was a good size, bath and showers very small which was quite restrictive. Obviously rooms had been for a self catering hotel before as our room had 2 cooking rings (Which were disconnected). No real 5* touches though, TV only had Sky News or BBC world, no dvd, no sound system. All these you would expect with a 5* suite. Great hotel in a lovely location, very close to the beach 10 minute walk max, the room was immaculate and cleaned to a high standard every day without fail. The general standard of the hotel was definately 5* . Approx 6 Euros for a cab ride into Albufiera although there were a couple of excellent restaurants nearby and within a 10-15 min walk, Praia […] Grande restaurant overlooks the sea, excellent value, great host and a sea view. O Marinara excellent food and a real homely atmosphere. The pool areas were clean and the pools very refreshing although it was very quiet by the pools so excellent for relaxing! The only criticisms that we had was that breakfast buffet was the same everyday and not always hot but the standard of food was excellent, and don't buy a bottle of water from the pool bar it costs 3 Euros for 500ml compared to 1 Euro for 1.5 litres at the mini mart opposite, it is cheaper to buy beer in the hotel!! Overall a great hotel for people wanting to get away from the hustle of Albufiera but who want the option of going into the town in the evening. If you have class, this would be an excellent choice of hotel in Albufeira. This hotel oozes it without being over the top - from check-in to checkout. We saw the other reviews, examined them with a very analytical eye, compared them to the other hotel reviews, and chose this one. No mistakes about that choice. Thoroughly clean, superb suites, ample […] wardrobe space, working large safe, clean sheets/ towels,professional couteous staff, ample electric sockets... Stayed at the deluxe suite - tons of space, two bathrooms, two tvs, dining table, reasonably good decor, kitchen area, good lighting, huge thoughtful buffet breakfast thrown in (fit for a king) that catered for all tastes. Watched two maids blitz the suite one day - just thorough and comprehensive - sooo good not to have to be responsible for the cleaning for once. The only minor gripe is the fact that the internet connection is not free - 7 Euros/hr or 20 Euros/day - seeing it is complimentary at most of the local restaurants. Pointed this out in my guest review, and hope this would change soon. One of the previous reviewers mentioned the chinese restaurant across the road - excellent food, affordable, friendly familiy restaurant and complimentary wifi connection to boot. Well worth visiting. Better to have a decent car rental, but it might be better to book your own, as Europcar is pricey, especially the fully comp insurance of 13.50 Euros/day - we paid 99 Euros for 6 days! The hotel is not that old so everything was working and everything was clean. Front desk were very helpful and we also received a free upgrade to a suite as we arrived! They also offer free shuttle bus to the main strip which was very helpful. Would defo go back!

This hotel is relatively new and has a modern open, uncluttered but welcoming feel to it. The rooms (Deluxe Suites) are huge, 60sq metres indeed, with two full bathrooms etc..and very well equipped-the only criticism I have- are that the tap (directions) for mixing hot and cold water are in a word hopeless and the shower heads are far too small-but […] this is a very minor gripe which you can easily live with!! Have just returned from an excellent 10 day break in Albufiera, staying at the 5* Sao Rafael Suite Hotel. Booked a suite room and half-board basis. This hotel is just outside Albufeira and a taxi is definitely needed to get in to town, which costs approx 5e for the old town or 7e for "the strip". There is not a lot going on around the hotel as it is […] in a residential area and bars restaurants are few, but the local beach is a 10 minute stroll away and is very popular. The hotel itself is modern and rooms are well furnished to a high standard. The suite consisted of a large living/dining area which also has fridge/mini bar and tea making facilities. The bedroom is huge with good storage and large bed and importantly air con. The suite had two bathrooms, one large with all the fixtures the other smaller with a shower cubicle. Each room had an LCD tv with some english speaking channels. In summary the accomodation is excellent, one of the best rooms we have ever had. The restaurant is superb, friendly efficient staff and good quality food. The restaurant manager and staff are excellent and make you feel welcomed each night. In fact service all round from reception to poolside is superb and could not be faulted. Would I go back? Most definitely. This is an excellent hotel with good helpful and efficient staff and costs for drinks are reasonable considering other hotels we have stayed at. Pools and facilities are adeqaute without being too brash. Mehr

Have just returned from an excellent 10 day break in Albufiera, staying at the 5* Sao Rafael Suite Hotel. Booked a suite room and half-board basis. This hotel is just outside Albufeira and a taxi is definitely needed to get in to town, which costs approx 5e for the old town or 7e for "the strip". There is not a lot going on around the hotel as it is […] in a residential area and bars restaurants are few, but the local beach is a 10 minute stroll away and is very popular. The hotel was everything we expected. Great breakfast buffet, but get there early for best tables. It was conveniently located, about 5 minute walk to a spectacular beach, and a 15 minute drive to Albufeira, a city with great restaurants, night life, and great views.

CS Sao Rafael was a great hotel - situated a couple of miles outside Albufeira was ideal. The breakfasts and restaurants were great and the service was second to none. Our days were spent either at the pools or the beach - enjoying a relaxing, fun holiday. In the evenings, we drove into town and parked in a public car park half a mile from Old Town […] and enjoyed a full, touristy town with all the benefits of a tourist attraction - restaurants; bars; street entertainment.
