Off the Square - Christchurch

Sadly, Off the Square is closed indefinitely because of damage from the Feb 22 earthquake according to a message from the manager on March 8. I hope that this quirky hotel will reopen as it was our favorite stay during our three week vacation in New Zealand. An unbeatable location, friendly & helpful staff, B&B atmosphere, colorful decor, free wi-fi, […] parking and more all at a very affordable rate. Rooms are small but comfortable. We left Chch almost 50 years ago and really enjoyed being so close to everything, to the Cathedral where we had to walk only about 150 m to morning service last Sunday. We found good restaurants in the vicinity when needed. We'd come again!!

Excellent value, superb central location, no frills hotel. Don't be put off by the somewhat pretentious description of "boutique hotel". It does the basics very well.

Affordable boutique hotel in the very center of town with helpful & efficient staff.

This place is artistic, eclectic and convenient. Add to that free internet and you have a pretty full package. The internet speed is not fast but for free it is hard to complain. It is literally less than a block from Cathedral Square so very easy walking distance to many places. The cost was very reasonable but we were there on the shoulder season […] so prices were low. Good sized room, double glazing, kettle, hair drier, king sized bed, large flat screen TV, clock radio, lounge area in large area at top of stairs/lift with free internet, microwave, ice and coffee plungers. Great location.

Another restful stay. Really appreciate the consistent warmth and welcome of the staff. The central location makes access to a wide variety of eating and entertainment options easy and effortless. A great place to stay if you are weary of corporate blandness and sterile square spaces.

In a time where you generally have to choose between a boring/depressing chain hotel or a 'quirky' (read: has seen better years) backstreet closet, this hotel is a place to call home. Genuinely cheerful staff, wonderful architecture and design and a fabulous location combine to create an abience that truly lifts the spirit. Although they bill this hotel as "HIP", it is really rather laughable in decor. There is stuff everywhere you look, orange, red, black, fabric, candles, swags, "art". It truly is visual overload but not in a good way. It can't decide what it wants to be. The bed was comfortable but with flat pillows and the bathroom clean and surprisingly white and […] sterile looking. We had two thin bath towels and two washcloths for two people. The information binder in the room had menus from a couple of restaurants with sticky food residue on the plastic sleeves. There was very little to "personalize" an introduction to Christchurch although there were pamphlets in a rack in the lobby. if they want to appear unique they could do better. The price was right but don't delude yourself that you're booking anything shwanky. Mehr

Beautiful hotel in a great location with friendly staff, quiet room, great art everywhere, free real coffee [French press] FREE internet [at last in NZ!]. The most NOT boring accommodation I've stayed in for years... highly recommended for those who are tired of the Sheraton or Marriott type experience, and at Holiday Inn prices!

excellent boutique hotel with lots of style in a superb location

I chose this hotel based solely on the free Internet access and a good price. What a pleasant surprise to discover the hotel was a work of art. Every room was different. Ours was small, functional, and intimate in an artistic way. The hotel is a mere 1/2 block from Cathedral Square and walking in any direction yields Christchurch surprises. The room was very small, but everything els perfect Parking was diffic ult in lower basement.

Un buen hotel, con un personal profesional y atento, habitaciones limipias, internet gratuito y muy céntrico. Una buena opción.

全部屋のデザインや間取りが違うとの事でしたが、私たちの部屋はダブルベットが１つで部屋がいっぱい。 ベットサイドにトランクを１個広げるのがギリギリな程度のスペースしか無く、何をするのもベットの上。 ２人で滞在するにはとても狭かったです。 なのに扇風機が２個あるのは不思議でした。 フロントは２４時間常駐というものの、日中はほとんど人がいなく、鍵を預けられない日もありました。 ホテルの内装はとてもオシャレでホテルの目の前をトラムが走っているのも素敵です。 大聖堂のすぐ側というリッチ条件も素晴らしいです。 部屋は運なのかも知れませんが、あの狭い部屋でなければまた宿泊したいと思います。
