500 West Hotel - San Diego

Hatte ja schon auf der Webseite gelesen, dass die Badezimmer ausserhalb der Hotelzimmer liegen. Hatte aber trotzdem nicht damit gerechnet, dass es im Zimmer nicht einmal ein Waschbecken gibt. Auch waren die "Badezimmer" ausserhalb 4 Toiletten (2 davon inkl. Waschbecken, 2 davon inkl. Dusche) fuer ca. 15 Zimmer - und in ziemlich heruntergekommenem Zustand. Das […] Zimmer war superklein, das Bett wackelig, ausserdem gab es nur einen Schrank, einen Tisch und einen Hocker. War schon geputzt, aber es gab viele alte Flecken an der Wand und auf dem Teppich. Wollte Geld sparen mit dem Aufenthalt, aber habe es hier mit dem Sparen uebertrieben. Wuerde das Hotel nicht noch einmal buchen. Wenn jemand allerdings einen Low-Budget-Urlaub machen muss und vielleicht auch unempfindlicher ist gegenueber den Gemeinschaftstoiletten (war ich frueher glaube ich auch), dann ist die Lage des Hotels ganz praktisch, in der Mitte zwischen Gaslamp Quarter und der Hafenpromenade. Allerdings auch nahe zum Bahnhof, deswegen nachts laut. Mehr

Altes ungeplfegte kleine Zimmer, laut und muffig, keine Weiterempfehlung

Das Gebäude ist aufgeteilt in Hostel und Hotel. Vorteile: - zentrale Lage - sehr günstig - unser Doppelzimmer war sehr sauber, kein Staub auf den Schränken oder ähnliches - obwohl es nur Gemeinschaftsduschen und -toiletten gibt: sie waren meist sauber - kostenloses WLAN - bis 10 Uhr morgens kostenloser Kaffee und Obst an der Rezeption Nachteile: - […] keine kostenlosen Parkmöglichkeiten im Umkreis - es ist tierisch laut, die Fenster sind sehr einfach, man hört Straßenlärm, Baulärm, jede Nacht fahren mehrere Züge vorbei, die sich durch ständiges lautes Hupen und klingelnde Bahnübergänge bemerkbar machen (so einen Krach habe ich noch nie irgendwo erlebt - ein Wunder, dass das erlaubt ist) - die Türklinken lassen sich beim Verlassen der Räume nicht herunterdrücken, die Türen können also nicht leise geschlossen werden, entsprechend laut werden sie nachts zugeknallt - teilweise wohnen seltsame Leute dort; ein Bewohner fragte einen Mitreisenden nach Feuer und hat sich damit dann im Eingang des Hotels eine Droge geraucht (vermutlich Crack) Wer günstig unterkommen möchte und keine Probleme mit Ohropax hat, dem kann ich dieses Hotel empfehlen. Wenn man entspannen möchte und einfach Ruhe braucht, dann sollte man ein anderes Hotel aufsuchen. Mehr

Das West 500 liegt in bequemer fußläufiger Entfernung zu Downtown, Gaslamp Quarter und Hafen; Bus- und Tramhaltestelle zu allen wichtigen Zielen liegen vor der Tür bzw. gleich um die Ecke. Ich würde das Hotel demjenigen empfehlen, der ohne Auto und lange innerstädtische Fahrten unterwegs sein will, der sich langsam zu alt für ein Hostel fühlt und ein […] eigenes Zimmer haben möchte, aber doch kein vollwertiges Hotel mit Rundum-Service zahlen kann oder will. Das Haus war wohl früher ein YMCA und erinnert in manchen Dingen noch an ein Studentenwohnheim, z.B. in Zimmergröße und Bad-Lösung. Mein Einzelzimmer war klein aber ausreichend, und mit Bett, Schrank, Tisch, Polsterhocker und (kleinem) Fernseher ausgestattet. Die Badezimmer-Lösung finde ich clever: Auf dem Flur befinden sich mehrere voll ausgestattete Badezimmer, man sperrt von innen zu, und hat dadurch ein "shared" aber doch privates Badezimmer. Das hat hervorragend geklappt, es war immer eines frei, die Bäder waren auch immer sauber. Das Personal am Empfang könnte mehr Informationen von selbst geben, war aber freundlich und wusste meist Bescheid, wenn man etwas gefragt hat. Im Haus ist ein Fitnessstudio (YMCA) untergebracht, wo man als Hotelgast für sehr günstige Tages- oder Wochenpreise trainieren kann. Mehr

Die Zimmer und die Waschraume sind sauber. Das Hotel liegt direkt am Broadway, sehr nahe an vielen Bars und Restaurants!! Der Komfort und die Groesse des Zimmers sind den Preisen angemessen. Koennen das Hotel weiterempfehlen!!

This hotel had what I needed at a very affordable price. It was located perfectly for what I wanted to do. The room was really small but it was comfortable. I was able to walk to Horton Plaza, to the San Diego Harbor for a Harbor cruise, and to most other places I wanted to go. The cafe that is connected to the hotel lobby was good for breakfast. The […] only thing I didn't like was the parking. There is a parking garage right next to the hotel but it is $15 a day and there is no in and out priveleges. I would definitely recommend this place to friends. It is a hostel- some of the other guests definitely missed this when making a reservation. The only complaint I would have is that it's right on a major street and you can hear everything outside.

This is not a hotel its a hostel so beware!!! They dont really advertise this on the website.Had a horrible experience... The single standard room is very small my closet is bigger than the room.... I would recommend this hotel to everyone who want to stay for shorter period of time. I was there for conference for 2 days in march and i loved the hotel and the place. I was going to a conference at the San Diego Conf. Ctr. (~2 miles away from 500 West Hotel), and I couldn't spend much money. For the location and ease of travel, this hotel can't be beat. My only reservations is that I didn't know it was run like a hostel. But it didn't matter. I just wasn't prepared for a small room (8' x 10') and a private communal […] bathroom/shower about 30 feet outside my room (I felt like I was back in my college dorm). The hotel is in a building that's about 100 years old but it has some old-fashioned charm to it. Hospitality staff works well and do a good job keeping the room clean. Great price, and large clean lockable shower/sink/toilet stalls met my basic expectations for the great price. Free internet and friendly staff. Good security. We stayed here for a night out in downtown San Diego. We were mostly attracted to the low price of the rooms. The only available rooms were single rooms with a twin bed (with or without a TV), so a friend and myself booked one for each of us. As the title of this review says, the 500 falls somewhere in between a hotel and a hostel. Despite the bare bones approach, I found the room to be clean and the shared bathrooms to also be generally clean as well. For a cheap night in San Diego close to the Gaslamp district, this will do the trick. I didn't think the rooms would be so small. However, I knew that we would be sharing the bathrooms, so I won't complain about that. It wasn't my favorite place to stay, probably would not stay there again. The bed seemed to be broken as well. This is not a hotel. It is a Hostel...I really think that Hotels.com should take it off their website since it's not a hotel. I've never had a bad experience booking through Hotels.com before this is my only complaint that they shouldn't have this listed on there since it isn't a hotel. Loved the retro look of the lobby. Staff were very nice. The room was minimalist -- but hey, it used to be a YMCA back in the day! The room and the bathrooms were very clean, although the carpeting in the bedroom was worn and stained. Couldn't have done better for the price and convenience.

Was globally satisfied consider the price of the room. Location very convenient in downtown close to train station. Might feel a bit noisy depending on the location of the room.

This hotel did not meet my expectations. I was not comfortable using the bathroom located in the hallway. I opened the door to the room & it almost hit the bed. I left immediately. ... it's a hostel, college dorm setting, but GREAT value because of how clean it is, how centrally located it is, and free Wi-Fi which I later found out people who were paying $250/nite at local chain hotels did not have internet access for free. this was my 2nd time there because of the value, comfort, and cleanliness.

The worse exprience of my life. Stay up all night, not sleep because the hotel is located close to trian station and street bus noice, No TV no bathroom , No shower , No parking....

It really depends what you are in the mood for, when choosing this hotel. I guess its great for students who are heading out here for a road trip or visiting the US on a budget. The room was smaller than my bedroom at home but it had enough space for comfort. We were only staying one night so it was just fine. The tv was tiny though and there wasnt a chair so i couldnt sit close enough to watch it comfortably. The bathrooms were clean and close by. And parking is expensive but it is the same all over town. *tip dont park in the parking structure its way too expensive just walk down to the corner on A st and there is a lot you can park at that alows in &outs for 24 hours at a far better rate. A hostel well located, clean, organized and has a great service. Although the rooms have no bathroom, there were many bathrooms in each of these floors and bathrooms were extremely clean and organized throughout the day. The hotel is in a great location downtown one block from the train station.The rooms are comfortable,clean,and very basic. The restrooms are very clean, well stocked, and private. If you are looking for the W Hotel, this place is not for you. A good deal for the price paid.

Room was extremely small with no bathroom - had community bathrooms for the entire floor. Not sure if this was in the original description or not but it was a surprise to me nonetheless. Best location with perfect price if you don't mind the shared bath. At night the downtown streets and trolleys and trains can be a little noisy but I have no trouble falling asleep. Also they have vending machines on floor 2 ...

The pictures were misleading. The rooms were much smaller than it had lead on. However, I went on a holiday weekend and this was very reasonable but it also attracted some not so great crowds. 500 West is an entirely acceptable place to park yourself, straight off the train line in downtown San Diego. The only downside of staying there was that the drainage in some of the shared restroom/showers was not ideal, which could leave you stomping around in water when you're getting ready for the day.

Basically it is a converted Y dorm residence. Diverse travellers. Clean, safe, practical Shared bathroom does not mean attached to two rooms, but rather several separate bathroom with shower rooms a few doors down the hall. Clean.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. There are lovely gathering areas and a full kitchen and laundry. The price is absolutely unbeatable for the location. However, the rooms are nothing like the online pictures. Expect much older, dirty old painted walls, old stained carpets, poor lighting, and nast old hotel bedding.

Bad hotel. Stay away. I only wished I would have listened before. Sure they have WiFi but I didn't want to stay in the room long enough to pull out the laptop. It beat sleeping in the car .... but not by much.

Paid 50 bucks a night for 4 nights while in town for a conference. One night a lady with track marks followed me onto the elevator and asked for a dollar. The bed was comfortable, better than a futon or slab of cement. The community bathrooms were clean. One had a flickering overhead light that made me feel like I was in a slasher movie. The sound insulation […] in my room was not great, meaning I could hear every cough and argument in the surrounding rooms. If you want fru fru and frills this is not the hotel for you. If you want somewhere decent to rest your head for a few hours, it's fine. I guess I didn't realize that this was actually part of the YMCA. It was fine, the rooms were clean, but very small. I literally only slept there, and the bed was fine. There are no TVs in the room, which was kind of surprising. I had a computer and it has free wifi so I just used Hulu. The hallways smelled very badly - like urine and bleach. The rooms were dirty. We also got bedbugs from the bed and now are covered with bites. The location is nice however you hear all the noise from the streets.

The hotel was fine. I was ok with sharing bathroom. I only saw two people on my floor the 5 days I wa there so it was never a problem. The only problem I had was with the parking. The web site says parking $15 a day. They dont tell you its in parking garage behind that hotel and that price is only if your in garage before 11am and leave the next day […] before 11am. I got in t 10:30 at night and when I left garage the next day at 5pm I was charged $25, more than the posted maximum for 24 hours. I called to complain and because it was Sunday I was told I was out of luck and no one ever called me back from garage. The gimmick is I was going to convention center and it made more sense to pay $10 and park there all day and then park on the street at night. The parking meters dont run at night so you park in a meter, just check the street sweeping schedule to make sure youre not on the wrong street the wrong night. the last night I had to park about 9 blocks from hotel and it was a little worrisome but it all turned out ok. This is a hostel, you do not have your own bathroom. Not a good value, even for downtown SD. Some shady people in this place.

The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Diego and the price was right. That is about all that was good about this place. the rooms are TINY, there is no service, the pillows sucked and the carpets hadn't been cleaned in years . . . .

Hotel is actually a hostel with shared bathrooms. Dirty carpets. Beware of this. But with cheap rates and awesome location it's something to think over if you can deal with the latter. I was not expecting a hostel so I was weary. But it was safe and bathrooms were cleaned every so often.
