The Russell Hotel - The Rocks

Very nice hotel - very well maintained. The bed was super comfortable. Great Location - walking distance to everything. A little pricey considering the very small room, and shared bathroom down the hall.

Stayed here for one night with my husband. The room was small but cosy, and it made a great base for exploring the city. I was initially worried because the windows weren't double-glazed, but even with one of the windows open, the city noise was incredbly quiet. The room was also a bit stuffy, but the air conditioner installed alleviated that quickly. […] The only caveat I would have is that all the rooms were up quite a steep flight of stairs, and the elevator was broken at one point. Great hotel. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome, the location is excellent, and we got a great night's sleep. It's more like an old-style B & B, but fits in perfectly with the neighbourhood. Mehr

Built in 1880's this place rocks with character. Don't expect 5 star big name hotel rooms, but do expect down-home quality care, and personal attention. Home-made breakfasts, friendly staff, and a romantic feel. Its just 100 ft from the quay & harbor, the iconic center of Sydney, where you can listen to live music, stroll safely at night, and are surrounded […] by many wonderful restaurants. 3 minute walk to the opera house, but it will take you an hour as you stop at cool shops, street musicians playing didgeridoos, and more. Charming 19th century exterior and contempory furnishings that manage to cater for 21st century needs. Ideal for tourists as it is opposite the Circular Quay - next to the Rocks historical area - close to all transport services . The Wine bar is well stocked and the Tapas menu is good value. The staff was very nice and efficient. The hotel is a vintage house, the bedrooms very clean and confortable. The location is absolutely perfect, in the Rocks. I definitively recommand this hotel.

Unbeatable location, could see a cruise ship at Circular Quay as we came out through the front door. Many historical pubs, cafes, close by. Parking very close. Lovely breakfast and Wine Bar excellent. Boutique hotel atmosphere.Flowers in room.Chocs on bed. Small bathroom but everything worked well. Comfy bed.

This hotel is fantastic in almost everyone possible way! Has a gorgeous light airy sitting room with a small library of books, a roof top sitting space (a little noisy but adds to the atmosphere of it's location) and beautifully furnished bedrooms with clean bathrooms and toilets to share. We stayed in Room 2 with two single beds looking out on to George […] Street and Circular Quay. Our stay would have been a 10/10 if it were not for the 21st birthday party that was held in the Wine Bar located directly beneath our room and went to 2am and kept us awake from the noise. I'm sure that if we had stayed in a different room, we would easily have not experienced the lost hours of sleep, however this having happened, I would still recommend the Russell Hotel to anyone for any occasion - that's how much I enjoyed the place! Location and Old Fashioned Stye are very good. I recommend this hotel to everybody.

This is a very nice and convenient small hotel with a very accommodating staff. Its location in the historic Rocks district near the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay (ferries and buses) is a plus. Rooms are small but quite adequate for a short stay.

A mother and daughter trip to the opera was on our to do list and staying at the Russell made it a perfect. Why ? We stepped back into the past with market day and exploring the cafes and side streets of the Rocks. Then on opera night we took a leisurely walk to the opera house. The theme of which fitted the Russell decor beautifully. Then back to our […] room. We walked with the departing Opera House crowd who flowed towards our hotel and delivered us to the front door. There was no worries about walking alone at night. And it provided the perfect venue to see the harbour sparkle out our window. Even had chocolates under our pillow. Yes, we'll come again one day. It was a highlight of our holiday.Commuter bus back to the airport from the front door was also a great idea. Mehr

I've stayed at the Russell many times and have never been disappointed (except by the view from the room, which has always looked out on another building --- but in Sydney, that makes for a quiet room!). We booked our room at the Russell on Hotels.com. We knew the hotel had just finished a huge renovation and we were excited to see what had taken place in this period property. We checked into the standard double (with shared bathroom) and to say that room is a cozy space is an understatement. The bed, while lovely to look at, was short and the matress […] was old and it was about as comfortable as a 20 year old sleeper sofa. I asked the front desk if they had any other rooms, The only other rooms available required us to pay extra per night, with a shared bathroom. The room was much larger and had a small television, The bed was more comfortable but was not great. The room was also directly above the wine bar and the noise did not die down until 1am. Although this hotel has been through a major renovation and the rooms appear nice, the smaller details are lacking. We had to call house keeping for a wash cloth as there was not one provided with the towels, and then we were told to "keep up with it" because they do not have many. The blinds on the windows looked like they not been dusted for weeks. Overall, I would reccommend this hotel if you are looking for a GREAT location and a place to store your suitcase. Mehr

The Russell always reminds me of olde worlde hotels in London. It's tucked away, upstairs (although there is a lift now) with all of its bedrooms unique, decorated with a collection of brass-beds, old timber and floral covers. At times there can be a noise problem relating to Sydney's oldest pub next door and this time I had the constant stopping/starting/droning […] from machinery probably also next door. On arrival to the Russel hotel, I found the staff very friendly and helpful through out the stay. The position of the hotel was great, just cross the road and you will find yourself in circular quays where you will find lot's of bars etc. And catch ferry's to other parts of the city. Our room was very clean and comfortable and a good size. My wife and I stayed at the Russel mainly for the great location in the Rocks. The hotel itself has a lot of atmosphere, and there is a winebar on the ground floor, where the breakfast is also served. It is a very small hotel, and parking is very expensive because of the are. Expect $25 AUD per day. The rooms are very small but clean, with very little […] comfort, the bed was too short, we could barely walk around the bed because of the other furniture in the room and there was no tv. The room we stayed in didn't have its own bathroom either, which I think should have been there at the price we paid. We stayed in a weekend, and it quickly became apparant that the walls are paperthin. We could hear everything inside and outside the hotel, and we didn't get much sleep because of this. If you like the romantic/simple hotel style, the Russel is perfect. But if you need a bit of comfort and quiet time, there are many other hotels within a short distance, that can offer more than the Russel at the same price. Mehr

This old (1887) character hotel is in the process of renovating rooms. On 2 different nights we had one of each and experienced no problems with either. Continental brekky included with Internet access in reception. Best feature is location - easy walk from Circular Quay trains and ferries and key harbour sites. Good restaurants/cafés nearby. Nice clean friendly hotel. Well situated for the Bridge & Opera House. Other sights within easy walking distance. Some free internet time is also available.

Would recommend this hotel as the manager was extremely helpful in everyway nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was very good and nice to have it included in price of room per night.

right in the heart of the rocks, this old hotel has a great location. However, it is very noisy as it is surrounded with bars and restaurants and the noise can go into 3am! The rooms are in style, each one is different. I happened to stay in a VERY small room with hardly any space to put anything. Staff seemed friendly. Although the staff were friendly and helpful, the room itself was dissapointing. I was expecting old world charm, but all I got was old. No air-con (avoid in summer - you will roast), tired decor and grubby carpet, bedding well worn. A shame really as the location was prime - right in the middle of the rocks. This little hideaway is the ideal spot to stay in Sydney. We could walk everywhere and saved a lot of money on public transportation. It was just a block to the train to go to the airport. The room was large and confortable even with a fireplace. I will most certainly stay there again when I have the chance.

A very charming historic hotel at one of the best locations in the city. Very friendly staff. Going to be renovation in May 2011.

A hotel with character, such a joy compared with the bland international chains. They were refurbishing when we were there but will be fine when finished. Location couldn't be bettered. Cafe on ground floor a bit noisy at night but not a huge problem.

Within walking distance to absolutely everything, The historic Rocks - your'e right there, 1 min to Circular Quay to catch a ferry or train, 3 mins to Opera House for concerts. Plenty of scenic walks and things to do.

A freshly renovated boutique hotel of yesteryear, each rooms decor is unique, the russell oozes charm and character, it had it's faults,but would we stay there again "absolutely", they will be seeing us again, no doubt. This is a great little hotel. Lots of charm and the location is great. We loved The Rock area, plenty to do and close to many activities. They are in the process of remodeling and it will be even sweeter when it is done. Our room was a little small and we shared a bathroom but that was our choice to keep the price down. The bathrooms are shared and there's no elevator, but the lovely staff, quaint atmosphere and cute rooms made up for that. If you are looking for an old B&B experience in the heart of The Rocks, this is a great choice.

Great location if your cruise ship is leaving from the nearby port. Quaint old hotel, but steep narrow wooden staircase is required to reach all rooms. No air conditioning makes summers in Sydney pretty miserable. Shared bathroom, even for spoiled Americans, was not a problem.

The hotel has the ambience of a large bed and breakfast, and the friendly, courteous staff create a home away from home feeling. The breakfast bar with hot entrees from the menu is a great value considering the cost of restaurants in the area. Guests have access to a lovely reading room with french doors and a balcony, a TV, and lots of books on travel […] in Australia. Guests also have access to a rooftop garden with nice views of the city. The steep circular staircase (there is no elevator) could create a problem for persons with heavy luggage or health problems, so it's a good idea to request a lower floor. With Circular Quay only a 10 minute walk, you can go everywhere in Sydney by ferry, bus, or train. Mehr

We spent four nights at the Russell and were delighted with the location in the Rocks! Countless restaurants, pubs, cafes, and shops are within a few minutes walk. Circular Quay is just around the corner, as are the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. The breakfast was great, and the staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The Rocks est le quartier le plus chouette de Sydney. A deux pas de Circular Quai, quelques minutes du centre-ville et Darling Harbour est également facilement atteignable à pied, si on aime marcher un peu le long de la baie avec une vue exceptionnelle sur le Sydney Harbour Bridge. Et ældre men meget charmerende hotel med en yderst venlig service samt en god beliggenhed. Som sagt ikke den store luksus, men charmerende. Eneste minus er toilet og bad på gangen, men alt er meget rent.

シドニーのホテルはどこも値段が高いので、リーズナブルに泊まる為に、『シャワー付き。バス共用』の部屋にしましたが、解釈を誤っていました。 「部屋にシャワーは付いているが、浴槽は共用」だと思い込んでいたのが、大間違い。部屋にはシャワーどころか洗面所もなく、シャワー・トイレ・洗面所が一体となった共用スペース（つまり英語でbath room）を使うようになっていました。 外人さんは朝からシャワーを使うので、空いている隙を狙うのに苦心して、快適な滞在とは言えませんでした。 部屋も狭く、２人分のスーツケースを広げると、歩く場所がない状態。駅から近くてとっても便利な反面、道路に面した部屋だったので、自動車の音とか、人の騒ぐ声がうるさかったです。 でもシドニーでは珍しく朝食付きで、結構満足のいく内容でした。 […] 朝の早いツアーにはいると、食べられないのが残念。 Mehr

Accueil formidable. Hôtel super bien situé dans les Rocks, tout près du pont, de l'opéra, des ferrys. Petite chambre plein de charme sans sb ni TV. Mais sdb extérieure très grande et moderne, et salon avec TV grand écran. C'est pas plus mal.
