Castle Makahuena , a Condominium Resort at Poipu - Koloa

Front office does not have convenient hours of operation. We arrived, had to figure out how to get into our room, finally found the envelope that included a phone number to call to get the code to a box to access the key to our room.... which would have been fine if there were clear directions on how to do this and what to look for and expect. We quickly […] tried to find our room and unlock the door due to the on property loitering, but the lock on the door was more difficult than usual to open. Once inside, the first thing I noticed was the overwhelming musty smell and worst of all, a total lack of privacy. There were no curtains on the window to prevent anyone from the parking lot from looking in at us (we were just about eye level with anyone walking/parking through the parking lot)! This place was not as pictured. The furniture was worn and musty smelling. The windows to the view were not clean. There are many steps and no air conditioning, so moving in at 3:00 in the afternoon was a sweaty experience. One sleepless night, so glad it was only one.

We loved the spectacular ocean view. Great sunrises, the best beaches in the world. We had such a great time. Kitchen was very well stocked. Washer/Dryer in unit. Fabulous covered lanai. Dream vacation for us. 2 couples easily shared the generous and beautiful spot. Great staff.

The condo was big (900 sq ft) and well furnished, a bargain at 66% of the daily price posted on the wall, but there were reasons for the relatively low rate. It was last decorated in the 80's, judging by the decor. There was no A/C. The MBR suite sink porceline was broken under the faucet. But the major drawback was the location: . The building was […] the farthest one from the parking area and the only mostly stair-free path was quite long. The unit was on the first floor (a stairway down from ground level) next to a spot popular for viewing sunrise/sunset on an elevated point of the shoreline. People gathering there were unaware or uncaring that their conversations carried directly through the open windows (remember, no A/C) into the bedrooms and living room of the condo. My opinion was that the unit was unsalable, so it was the primary or only rental unit. BTW, two BR, two baths (one in MBR suite), full kitchen and living room. Mehr

Great hotel, well maintained. The oceanview room we had was amazing. The kitchen had plenty of tools and kitchenware so it was easy to eat in. Bed was comfortable.

I stayed here while in Hawaii for my sister's wedding. The view was spectacular, the people were very nice, and the condos were spacious and very clean. Some of the condos were more family friendly than others, but I supposed that's because each condo is independently own and ultimately fits the life style of its owner, I was traveling with my five […] year old, so it was nice to see find some beach toys in the laundry closets to BORROW so I didn't have to buy new ones and try to figure out where I was going to store it for the trip home. We did donate a child size tube floaty thing that we brought with us. The breeze from the tradewinds were wonderful for cooling down the unit with the ceiling fans depending on your condo's location there was a tremendous amount of cooling breezes coming thu with the door propped open as there aren't any air conditioners. Didn't see one fly or get bit by one mosquito. It was amazing I had to ask if there were mosquitoes in Hawaii.lol. Not having a/c when you needed it or when it was too hot in the unit that didn't get much wind was the only downside, but it still gets a top rating because if you got too hot the pool was plenty cold and Poipu beach was just right down the road, walking distance, and the price was amazing as well. It was a hop, skip and a jump from the the Hyatt which is where my sis got married. We walked with no problem.I would definitely recommend it and would definitely return. Mehr

This was our second visit to Kauai and Poipu this year. We chose the Makahuena condo because it was one of the few places that offered 3 bedrooms. The location was nice and we had a beautiful view of the ocean. However, the grounds are not kept up with the neighborhood. The rooms were clean, but there was no room service. The manager was nice and said […] they service rooms every 4 days, including fresh towels. We gave $20 to the room service to bring us fresh towels for the second day and later decided to wash our towels daily but the room service never showed-up in our 6 nights stay to take out trash or change the sheets. The outside grounds show neglect, especially when compared the the nicely kept properties around. The owners of this condo should seriously think about changing the property management. If you do not need 3 bedrooms, stay in Castle Kiahuna Plantation bungalows - it is much nicer. Mehr

If you're going to stay in Poipu, you can go for a hotel or a condo like the Makahuenas. The condo offers a bit less of a touristy feel. You might even run into people who own the units who have good advice on where to go or what to do. If you're set on a condo, this is a great option. Why a condo? More space, a full kitchen, and a dining table. We […] didn't cook, per se, but it was nice to have a full fridge, microwave, a toaster, flatware, etc. for the few meals we prepared or the left-overs we had. Hawaii can be expensive, so preparing a few meals can save a lot. If you're traveling as a family, you get nicely separated bedrooms and in our case, 2.5 bathrooms. The unit we were in was well-appointed - no overly kitschy stuff and nice furniture, but mileage will vary by unit. Location: The location in Poipu, while not on a beach, is on the oceanfront. There's a steep and dangerous (but fenced) cliff right off the property, which makes for great wave watching, particularly when stormy. If you can't fall asleep to waves, then maybe this isn't for you. I personally love it. The property is a few minutes' drive from local shops & restaurants, as well as Poipu Beach, even at 25 mph, the local speed limit. It's just 4-5 minutes more to Koloa and a few more shops and restaurant options. Note: Be aware that maid service is not like at a hotel. We got a refresh of towels, but otherwise, you have to schedule service for a nominal fee. We never did. Mehr

Condition and maintenance of the hotel was okay, but not what I expected for the price we paid. Walk to the beach takes about 20 minutes. We weren´t satisfied with our condo at all. It was was not clean. There was settled dust everywhere and leftovers on the dishes so that we needed to clean everything. I wanted to use the washing machine but found […] old molded laundry in it. The condos are located right on the ocean...beautiful location. But some of the units can be extremely uncomfortable. Some of the buildings block the breeze and none of the units have air conditioning....the result was that the first unit we had the afternoon temperatures in the condo were in the high 80's with humidity felt like 100 degrees. Fortunately […] there was construction going on next door (numerous remodel projects were being undertaken)....so we were reassigned a "superior" view unit...and it was and was able to catch the breeze....the difference was amazing. The staff was very helpful and accomodating...so if you get one of these sub-par units...I recommend going immediately to the staff. Mehr

We had stayed there before, but this time the noise of construction, leaf blowing, and lawn mowing was near incessant during the days. Complex getting a bit tired in appearance, but suite very comfortable.

We reserved a 2 bedroom condo on the ocean front. Sightings of whales and turtles were wonderful and sunsets were splendid. Evening mai-tais and breakfast on our own cliff-top balcony was delightful. We were satisfied with the place and would return.

Our family were impressed with the accomodation and location. We recommend Castle Makahuena to families and couples. They told us the weather wasn't the best for March but we found the wind refreshing especially at night this eleviated the lack of air conditioning which was not a problem for us. Our children had a wonderful time playing on the grounds […] and in the pool. We found the barbecue facilities to be more than adquate as there 3 units to use, two gas and one charcol bricket, which we did everynight during our ten day stay. There is house cleaning staff available for a charge however we had no problem keeping our unit clean as there was a clean supplies available. All said and done we had a very good stay, the staff were very helpful and we would recommend Castle Makahuena to anyone, Mehr

We had an oceanview room and the views from every room are spectacular. The location to walking paths and beaches was very convenient, too. The accomodations are not the newest but everything was clean.

The view of the ocean from our balconies was georgous. I loved the 3 bedrooms and we had enough bathrooms that no one had to share. The room had extras like lawn chairs in the closet, and a waher and dryer. It was decorated nicely and very comfortable. Easy check-in. However, we did not like our hotel room especially because the window screens were not intact--there were huge gaps between window and screen, allowing bugs to come in--and I just cannot stand mosquitoes, so this was a huge bummer. But the manager was accomodating in that he let us tour another room that was available to give us a choice […] between the two. Unfortunately, we found that the same problem with the second room as well, so we did not switch. The hotel room, furniture, and appliances were definitely overused and outdated. It was spacious, but we were out a lot (rarely there) since we did not feel comfortable inside. Do not stay here. The room was filthy. There was mold in the room, dishes with food on them, and bedrooms drapes that did not clothes allowing anyone passing by to see into the bedroom. Very disappointed that someone would rent a room that was so poorly maintained.

Our condo was right on the ocean. Beautiful sun set views. Very large. Well equiped kitchen. The ceiling fans helped, but the condo was warm. We were there in December. I think it would have been too warm/hot int he summer. The sliding glass doors were difficult to open/close and the locks did not work, but there were wooden dowels to make sure no one […] could enter. Our condo was a long walk (down stairs ) from the parking lot. Would not be good for anyone with walking difficulties. It was a ways to carry the groceries. The walk to the beach was longer than I expected, but they are beautiful beaches. There were tou books, books to read, and games in the condo. We had a wonderful vacation staying at this condo. Mehr

OK, I didn't book the condo but was very surprised! It's amazing. Each is decorated differently as each is owned by different person - you can see e.g. different chairs on the balconies. We didn't have air condition - not sure if this is standard but we didn't mind. I really liked the place we stayed in and I think even though the condos are not the […] same, the quality must be similar. There were two body boards and three beach chairs in the cupboard! I liked the pool with whirlpool outside. Also the beach which is about 5 minutes drive/10-15 minutes walk is nice - you can snorkel there too - we saw a turtle. I saw a cockroach n our room but the problem is being tackled by professional company. Mehr

First of all, the hotel is simply known as the Makahuena forget the Castle part as the locals do not recognize this. This is a run down over priced hotel. We only stayed two nights and in that time had to have maintenance out twice to fix problems; Fab in Bedroom would not work properly, lights in the main bathroom would not work and we could not have […] the internet as promised as the repairs take 24 hrs plus. If you are considering this hotel, FORGET it unless they are charging only $25 a night. Mehr

I loved this property. Thank goodness I had a GPS to find it, but when I did I never wanted to leave. It's actually in a quiet neighborhood and is very quaint and clean. We found all of the rooms to be just as described... great views. Evelyn was at the front desk and greeted us with all of the Aloha that one comes to expect. We are somewhat handicapped and found that it was a little problem getting up to our rooms on the third floor, but that was only because we had not warned the staff that we had these problems. […] There are no elevators, so be ready to use stairs. My wife has severe back problems, and received unusually good help from Evelyn and the folks at RAC, as they acquired an excellent adjustable chair that she could sleep in. Can't use a flat bed. All of the utensils andd appliances, including the washer & dryer, were fine. Highly recommend this establishment to anyone wanting a pleasant & beautiful stay in the Hawaiian Islands. Mehr

LOVED IT!!! It was beyond our expectations. Each condo is individually owned so it may be luck of the draw. but, we stayed in 2404 and it was fabulous. The floors were like slate, Corian countertops, airy, no air-conditioners needed, fully stocked kitchen and little pieces of home, like beach chairs. The grounds were breath taking, we saw turtles daily […] and the pool and jacuzzi were sparkling clean. The only downfall was although the office staff was tops, they were not there all of the time. So, you have to stock up on towels and shampoo in case they are unavailable. Mehr

The two bedroom suite we had, had everything needed to make for a nice stay. The kitchen was fully equipped, there was a computer connection, and the TV was a great flat screen. The hotel is approximately a 15 minute walk from the beach. Two possible drawbacks encountered included distance to a local grocery and mosquitos.

ホテルの場所はとにかく最高です。宿泊したのはオーシャンフロントで、モーニングコーヒーを飲みながらなんとクジラのジャンプが見ることができました。しかし、建物の老朽化は隠せません。2階の足音はよく聞こえるし、ラナイへ出る窓のサッシの戸車が壊れていてスムーズニ開きません。大人二人でやっとの思いで開けたとおもったら、今度は閉まりません。当然鍵も壊れていましたし、つっかえ棒で夜は寝ました。ハワイ13回目にしてはじめての経験でしたが、これもハワイスタイルと思い宿泊しました。やはり安いものには何かあるんですかね？

初めてのカウアイ島でこのコンドミニアムを利用しました。 ここを利用した理由は、 １．リーズナブル ２．場所（ポイプ） ３．部屋の広さ ４．ロケーション 等です。 いずれもほぼ満足できるコンドミニアムでした。 何しろ部屋から夕方にはクジラも見え夕日が何とも幻想的でした。 次回も是非利用したいと思います。 日本人の宿泊者はわが家族だけのようでした。 英語が喋れたほうが利用しやすいと思います。（当方は全然ダメでしたが）
