Castle Apartments - Edinburgh

Wir waren sehr zufrieden mit unserer Unterkunft, denn kaum aus der Tür raus, standen wir schon mitten auf der Royal Mile. Leider konnten wir jeden Schritt unserer Nachbarn über uns mitverfolgen. Für eine Nacht ist es jedoch auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen.

- Rezeption und Check In sind in einem anderen Stadtteil - ausschl. Self-Catering, also kein kompl.Frühstück - Zimmer sind nur über eine sehr enge Wendeltreppe erreichbar, liegen teilweise unterm Dach - nicht für Ältere oder Gehbehinderte geeignet - Türen und Fenster schließen sehr schwer

Disappointing compared to the photos which were misleading. Good points were, clean linen, warm, plenty of hot water and excellent location. Bad points were; lack of care of the apartment; tv didn't work; no cd player or toiletries as stated. It could do with a refurb and more modern appliances. No toaster which was weird. Otherwise ok.

Excellent location with a very comfortable room, but the top floor is mean't for fit young athletic types and not two old gent's over 50. Our stay in Edinburgh was one of the highlights of 2011 and we most defiantly will be coming back for more but will book early to secure the ground floor appartments, so watch out Edinburgh we will be back.

Great location really nice apartments would recommend but should inform you about the checking in procedure as you may have a long walk with cases.

I would not recomend this place due to the difficulty in finding the location and then discovering that you must then walk to another location (Queen st) to register and get your key. Once returning to the apt, if there is a problem with the registration your only recourse is to return to Queen st (approx 1 - 1 & 1/2 mile away) to get another place […] & key. We loved being right in the city center and having a small kitchen. You do have to get the key at another location and use a spiral staircase to get to your room. We didn't mind that because it was such a good location for the money.

We got what we expected (especially after reading the other reviews). We thought the location was great. Pretty much right on the Royal Mile with a 5 minute walk to Edinburgh Castle! It was clean, and the bedroom was comfortable. The kitchen was decent. Now the problems. The stairs are tricky to negotiate, especially for the older travellers or travellers […] with big bags. We are young, so didn't bother us and we had backpacks. Nothing you can do about that though, so just be aware. The problem which the owners can fix - the floors need to be redone - carpets and tiles. The were quite old and in a bad state, but otherwise clean. Mehr

When on arriving at the Castles Apartments we were told via phone we need to pick up the keys from Queens Street, the receptionist kindly organised the key to be given to us by the house keeper outside the apartments to save us the journey. The room we booked was a one bedroom flat but when entering the room it clearly was not the case, they had given […] us a studio room which was very tired. I phoned the receptionist back and explained this was not what we booked. After great discussion, we were given keys to the flat which had a leak in the bathroom ceiling. It was our choice to stay put as the flat was, although needed a makeover, more comfortable. If choosing Castle Apartments as your stay, you have to keep somethings in mind, its cheap so its what you are paying for, there is no frills. BUT the location was amazing, straight out of the door and your in the throng of it. The castle is a stones throw and all the bars, shops and restaurants are on the doorstep. The less mobile be aware there is no lift and the steps are steep stone castle steps. We enjoyed our stay in Edinburgh, fantastic city, Would we use Castle Apartments again??? Sadly no, but for a cheap accomodation the location was fantastic. Mehr

The location is excellent, except you need to go across town to pick up the key...not fun in the rain with all your luggage. There was no loo paper and the ceiling was leaking over the bed!

First of all, the location was wonderful. The address for the hotel was incorrect. We showed up with our bags at the location of the apartment, which had no sign or any open door. I asked a nearby business where the hotel was located and the had told me that that was where the apartment was located but the check in was a mile away. She gave me a number […] to call, and the hotel service did not answer. They had hours posted on the apartment door that they were open until 8 p.m. I walked to the office, and they were closed at 6. I checked the door and it was unlocked, and I went in. The lady at the desk said that they were closed and I had told her that I had a reservation for two nights and needed my key for the apartment. She said "sorry but we are closed and you will have to use the lock box for the keys." I told them that I was never given a number for the lock box. She called a manager and he gave me a number for two lock boxes. I was told that I had booked two apartment flats for two nights when I only booked one. I called the man back and he told me that it was not his problem. I called hotels.com and they were really nice and assured me that I was not being charged for two flats, which I was not :) Hotels.com tried to contact the hotel manager to clear up the situation, and they would never answer their phone or return the call. The people that I had dealt with were very rude, did not have clear instructions as to the location of where you needed to check in, and closed before their posted hours. Very, very frustrating. The apartment was nice but a but rustic...and I hope you don't mind stairs. Pack light.

All I can say is, if you stay here be prepared to have your sleep interrupted at least once per night as people turn on taps it makes the building shake its so loud. The first time it happened, we were actually worried the roof might come down! Also doesn't actually have a double bed, just 2 singles pushed together. And though it says self-catering, […] there is no cooking equipment just a fridge and a kettle. Mehr

My friend and I went on a weekend trip while studying in London and this was perfect! We were so close to Prague Castle and all the pubs and resturants. Great location! Only downside is the spiral stair case- no lift. There was a mini fridge and plates and cups so we could eat in our room if we wanted. Would go back again!

Good points - location Bad points - have to collect keys from other side of Edinburgh, "apartment" is actually a small bedroom with ensuite bathroom of dubious standards, "fully equipped kitchen" was a toaster, kettle and little fridge, nearly 100 stone spiral steps to reach my room, very noisy, not as advertised and not value for money.

After the booking, we got an e-mail that we needed to pick up the key to the place on the other side of the city. Checked e-mail by coincidense - usually don't read it when I'm on holiday. Hard to find parking close to the appartement, but when we finally got to the place, it was nice. Felt like visiting someone we knew in Edinburg in their appartement. […] OK bathroom, waterboiler and coffee, livingroom with television, nice bedroom. Bar in the backyard, so we were excited to see if it would be noisy at night - but that was no problem. Appartement is as close to the castle in Edinburgh as you can get. Bars and restaurants close by. Mehr

Its cheap and more than cheerful. As noted in previous reviews, you need to pick up the key from a separate location. Which is the only downside, but its only a 15 min walk thorough this beautiful city. The apartment is cheap, absolutely ideally located, clean, large and allows for self-catering. booked a twin room but when we got to the appartment it was one double bed. my friend had to sleep on uncomfy sofa. as it was the middle of the edinburgh festival and the Tattoo there was no point in asking for a change of room. access to apartment up old, narrow stone steps - not good for anyone with a disability or elderly. bathroom blind was broken. […] on the plus side - perfrect location just off royal mile Mehr

Everything was great: 2 large roomd, beautiful kitchen, lot of space and light, bathroom with tub, right in the center, close to the train station. NOTE: their check in is 20 mins walking away from the place where you'll stay. Also insist on checking few times and ask for supervisor if they can't find your reservation (happened to me). Also don't recommend […] to seniors who might have difficulties climbing on 6-10th floor without elevator. Beautiful apartment, can easily accomodate 2-4 people in one (however they list it as a 1 room, it's 2 rooms + kitchen). I will definitely stay there again and recommend to my friends! Mehr

My 7 month pregnat girlfriend and myself booked into castle apartments not knowing what to expect it was the cheapest deal we found as we were wanting to go away for the weekend just the two of us before the babys due date. I was a little bit dissapointed as I was unaware that I'd have to walk all the way down to queen street to book in and claim my […] key. I maybe shouldve read my confirmation properly. moving on... The location was top notch right on the royal mile outside the castle - you are not going to get a fully equiped appartment on the royal mile fully furnished kitchen, bathroom, spa bath, DVD player 42inch flat screen TV and all. nPrices were very very reasonable given the time of year and phenomal location in short I'd highly reccomend theese apartments to anyone looking for a long weekend in the heart of the city. The only downside was the broken spa bath of which I was looking forward too but id happily rate an 8/10 Mr J Ross Mehr

Could not believe the brilliant location, as had picked this up as a last minute option because we were visiting for a concert in the castle. We were over the moon with this apartment. The apartment was clean, and spacious, maybe in need of a little TLC, but I am definately not complaining. We wished that we were staying for longer as we were so impressed. […] Will defo book again soon so see more of the sights. Mehr

Perfect location Great value of money

This hotel is located on the Edinburgh Castle side of the Royal Mile. The room was clean. There's no elevators and has a spiral stareway. I lived on the top floor and was quite tiring going up and down each day. A big flaw in this hotel is that the hotel receptionist is not located at the hotel but rather a few blocks away. So call first before you […] arrive!! Or else the checking-in process would become a hassle. If you drive there, there's an NCP parking structure nearby and it charges 18 pounds per 24 hours. Mehr

Very good location........ I rang to reception for reporting a problem for my room but they asked me to ring other number until the third number that i rang and talked to a staff. The problem unsolved until we check-out.

The room itself was nice and clean, bed had to be propped up with pillows as it was on a lean. The main issue was finding it. The map we were given didn't have the street on it we were looking for therefore we couldn't find the room, nor could any locals tell us where it was. In the end we had to ring them and it was an unsigned door in the street that […] wasn't named, shared with a drycleaners. This took us two hours to deal with and if it wasn't for the rave reviews about Edinburgh by others, we would have gone home. Mehr

Bath room had mold, window would not open and room smelt stale. TV would not work after repeatedly following instructions from info left in room. Had a two mile walk after picking up the Keys to get to the appartment. Told it was within walking distance. On the good side it was in an excellent postion on the Royal Mile.

Stayed June 14-19,2009. Warning! Had to drag luggages up 63 narrow circular steps without lifts to tiny apartment. Advertised Daily Breakfast Included but none provided. No apologies, no discounts and no concessions given. Convenient location can't make up for discomfort and inconvenience. No phones in room, which means to contact Reception if you […] have problems or questions (and we did - TV won't work), you have to get out of your apartment (up and down 63 steps) and find a public pay phone. Reception is in a totally different location and building (extra cab ride away). Bed was so hard I had severe back pains lasting days after my stay. Such meager provisions for a "self-catering facility". Won't ever be back! Mehr

a good location, silent, a different hotel (stairs like in a castle) near local shopping

We recently stayed at the castle apartments for a two night stay. We had to check in to the apartments at a totally different location as to where they were located. When we arrived at the apartments, we were faced with the daunting task of climbing 97 steps to our room! There were no lift facilities (given that this is an old building and the staircase […] was spiral) but we were not informed of this on the website. So each time we left we were faced with the climb each time we returned. The one good thing was that when we did eventually reach the top, the apartments were comfortable and clean. I don't think I'd be in a great hurry to go back though - unless I was staying on the first floor! Mehr

A friend and myself stayed here for the weekend of the Heiniken Cup Final 2009. We were looking for a basic place in a good location as a base to explore the famed Edinburgh pubs and this definitely met our criteria. It is in a superb location for the Grassmarket, a nice stroll downhill to Prince's St, and really could not be better located for the […] tourist locations of the Castle, the Closes, etc. (although these were not on our agenda this time). The apartments are located in a Castle like structure, up a stone circular stairway. They are basically furnished, but if you are not anticipating spending any time there other than to sleep and shower then they are perfectly adequate. The beds were comfortable, the linen and towels well supplied and the bathroom clean. The cooking facilities (not used by us) seem pretty good too. Some MINOR quibbles: the supplied shower gel, soap, etc. is pretty poor, so bring your own; the toilet makes a MAJOR racket when flushed - only a problem during the night if you are with a light sleeper; Also, you will have to collect the keys from a different location than the apartments, which means that although the apartments are very close to the airport bus terminus you have to do a bit of running around to get the keys. This is a minor quibble, it's about 20 minutes walk from where the keys are to the apartments or a £4 taxi ride. Mehr

The hotel was cheap and in a great location but don;t think I would stay there again.

This apartment was perfectly located just off the Royal Mile a stones throw from the castle and all the touristy things. The only complaint was that the sofa was rather stained but as we only paid for a double room with shower and fridge and were upgraded to a big apartment we can't really complain.

the apartment was clean modern and well equipped for a comfortable stay in a superb location. the furnishings were not particularly robust so more than a couple of nights may become uncomfortable- ie mattress, settee. everything was easy to find and sort out- reccommend using the station luggage store if you arrive early/leave later than check in times. […] a few faults- noise from nearby bars on the weekend, other nights very quiet, poor quality tv signal and very heavy internal fire doors-not great for "nipping" to the bathroom!, otherwise for the discounted price it was a great alternative to a hotel. Good location in the town centre but too difficult to find. Without lift so if backpacker is alright. Otherwise, find the way to go out if you live on 5/F

Ao chegar na recepção, que não fica no hotel, não encontravam a minha reserva, mas como levei todos os e-mails impressos facilitou bastante resolver o problema. Mas ainda assim, me informaram que não havia vaga, me colocariam em outro hotel e me devolveriam a diferença do valor pago. Quando perguntei onde ficava esse outro hotel, percebi que era muito […] distante da localização que eu havia escolhido, onde fica o Castle. Falei então que não tinha condições, já que eu havia escolhido o Castle por conta tbm dos arrededores. Logo me arrumaram um apartamento. Foi um pouco chato, mas resolveram de imediato sem qualquer mal estar e com muita simpatia e educação do recepcionista. O hotel não tem elevador, então como fiquei no último andar, subir com malas foi difícil. Mas eu já estava ciente disso, já que é informado no site. A única surpresa mesmo foi ficar no último andar. Fora isso... a localização é ótima, perto de bares, restaurantes, atrações turísticas, lojas, a cozinha do apartamento é equipada... Vale a pena! Indico! R. Mehr

Lägenheterna är väldigt centralt belägna, vilket är ett stort plus. Om rummen hade motsvarat vad bilderna visar så hade det varit ok, hade förväntat oss ett pentry och ett bord att sitta vid men fick endast bord bestående av ovansidan på en minikyl.

Beliggenheden er rigtig god, hvis man vil bo tæt på div. pubber og slottet. Dog en del larm om aftenen. Vi fik en anden lejlighed på en anden adresse end aftalt og det synes jeg ikke er ok. Som andre også nævner, er det irriterende at skulle hente nøglen et andet sted i byen og derefter vente til kl. 15 før man kan komme ind i en lejlighed, der var […] meget støvet! Sofaen i stuen var skåret i stykker, det var så løst ved at lægge et tæppe over! Sengene var elendige, køkkenet var fint med opvaskemaskine. Der mangler en mappe med generelle oplysninger, f.eks hvordan man får tv'et til at virke osv. Alt i alt vil jeg ikke leje denne lejlighed igen. Mehr

Les apparetements sont très confortables mais l'insonorisation des fenêtres est totalement à revoir. Nous étions dans l'appartement le plus haut de la tour et n'avons pas pu dormir à cause du bruit du vent et de la pluie que la fenêtre ne masquait pas du tout...

huoneisto sijaitsee aivan edinburghin linnan vieressä 1600 luvun alussa tehdyssä kiviilinnassa. seinät ovat kauniit paksusta kivestä tehdyt. kylpyammeeseen mahtuu kevyesti kaksi aikuista ja vuode on erittäin mukava. telkkari on todedlla iso. keittiöstä löytyi kaikki tarvittavat asiat. hinta/laatusuhde 10.

Una excelente ubicación para quienes hagan una visita corta a Edinburgo y esten interesados en conocer las atracciones locales tradicionales. Tiene ambientes espaciosos y las ventajas de un departamento (cocina, mayor privacidad, etc.) y las desventajas tambien (no hay concerje ni servicio alguno). No apto para quienes tengan dificultades para caminar, […] ya que no hay ascensor y la escalera es estrecha. Mehr

Ett mycket prisvärt lägenhetshotell. Det går inte få bättre läge och rummen verkade vara relativt nyrenoverade. Rekommenderas!

Il nostro appartamento era spazioso e confortevole. Posizione ottima si trova nel centro di Edimburgo a 5 minuti dal castello. L'unica cosa negativa è la mancanza di ascensore, l'arrivo è stato un po' faticoso con le valigie. Un baretto proprio sotto casa per bersi una buona Bulmers.......

La recepción está en otra calle muy lejos y es necesario pasar por allí para coger la llave. La escalera de acceso a las habitaciones puede ser de gran interés arquitectónico por su antigüedad pero muy incomoda, sobre todo si vas con maletas y estas en el último piso (escalera de caracol de piedra). La ubicación es muy buena, en la Milla real y cerca […] del castillo pero la calidad de la habitación y el mobiliario dejan mucho que desear. Suelos inclinados e inodoros muy viejos Mehr

Drömläge i början av Royal Mile, mitt i smeten ungefär 100 m från Edinburgh Castle, men ändå lite avskilt inne i en s.k. close. Lägenheten var mycket rymlig och där fanns allt man kna tänkas behöva (vattenkokare, diskmaskin, tvättmaskin m.m.) Duschen var dock ett mysterium. Receptionens och nyckelutlämningens läge likaså.

Castle Apartments on huippuvalinta, jos haluat vanhaa ja aitoa tunnelmaa vanhassa kaupungissa. Sijainti on loistava. Avaimet pitää noutaa toisesta paikasta, mutta muutoin loistava hinta-laatu suhde. Talvella voi olla kylmä ja vetoisa, mutta lämpöisinä vuodenkoina hyvä valinta.

Fantastisk beliggenhed. Masser af plads. Svært at bakse bagagen op ad vindeltrappen. Møbleringen virkede mildest talt tilfældig. (Kun en natlampe. Skrivebord anbragt bag en sofa - og forresten uden en stol, som der så heller ikke var plads til. Store, tunge sofaer om et meget lille sofabord. Støv på de kunstige blomster.
