O'Brien Hotel, an Ascend Collection hotel - San Antonio

Very nice boutique hotel. Nicely situated. Only thing to notice, ask for a room on the backside of the hotel. The front faces the street and has some street noise from traffic.

I ejoyed my stay the hotel was nice and local to all the attractions. the Hotel staff was very helpfull with our stay and the amenities were great also. I would go ther again.the rate wasn't bad either for what we had.

Great location! Everyone friendly at the hotel. Its a old hotel but, clean & rooms are updated. Nice to have a free breakfast to start you day. Would go again!

This smaller Hotel was a pleasant surprise for the most part. It is located not far from many of San Antonio's major areas. About 5 blocks from the Alamo and River Walk, in walking distance if you have the time and are willing to walk. The Hotel itself was quaint, very clean, and had a wonderful staff. I was disappointed in how small the room was, even […] the bathroom was kind of small. Not much room for two people with two full size beds. It did have a nice sized flat screen TV with cable. Wonderful breakfast every morning, no bacon or eggs though, but plenty of everything else. The parking situation could be discouraging if you were not able to find a spot to park. It is a 36 room Hotel with only like 25 parking spots. They do keep a close eye on the lot to make sure no one except patrons park there. The room we stayed in was super clean, fresh sheets daily if you want and ample supply of towels. The room we had also had a jacuzzi tub, and I made full use of it after long days of shopping and walking. It definitely fit the bill. Reasonably priced, it's one we will go back to again. Mehr

Really liked this hotel. A short walk to Riverwalk and convention center, and a nice friendly experience. One word of advice... try not to get room #104... it's street level and right on the corner... a bit noisy. Other than that, i recommend it thoroughly.

I would not stay there again. They charge u extra once u get there, that what u agreed to pay for with hotels .com. The maids cant speak english and the side door always has mop water on the floor which stinks like pee. The trash truck showes up at 3:00 or 4:00 am every morning which shakes u out of bed. We hated it.

My daughter and I loved the hotel itself...very quaint with the decor and extremely comfortable beds! The clerk was very helpful when it came to dining out recommendations. You can have balcony or spa tub, but not both.

I recently went to San Antonio for a business convention that was held at the local convention center. A friend of mine had recommended the O'Brien because it is not very far away and the price was reasonable. The pictures shown online looked good, so I booked. When I checked in I was given a parking permit for their lot. The biggest drawback was that […] while the hotel has around 39 rooms, they only have about 20 parking spaces, with 8 spaces in the small lot behind the hotel and the remaining spaces at a lot across the street. I managed to find a spot and then decided to leave my vehicle there the entire time and just walk to and from my destinations. My room was comfortable with a king-sized bed, plenty of pillows, a nice chaise lounger and a desk with chair. The bathroom was so small that you could not fully open the door. At less than half-way open the door hit the front of the toilet, making it impossible to ever fully open it. The bathroom was clean, and there was always plenty of hot water. There was an exterior door leading to a balcony outside, but the problem was that the entire second floor shared a balcony, meaning that any guest could go outside and be able to access your exterior door. Once I opened the door and discovered this I had a problem getting my deadbolt to lock again, but was finally able to lock it and I opted to not open the door again. I was supposed to have a high speed internet connection but there was no data port to be found, so I used their Wi-Fi service instead which worked well. My room was cleaned daily, and I had no other issues with it. When I first checked in, I gave a credit card for them to keep on file for "incidental" expenses. I asked if it would be charged or if I could just pay my parking fee when I checked out, as I intended to pay cash. I was told that it would not be charged. Hotel was exactly as advertised, clean, boutique little 2 star in a good location. Parking was fair priced at $10.00. Simple continential breakfast, all I needed was coffee, Taco Haven has the best Migas on the planet and is just down the street. I would stay here again, I visit San Antonio often and this is my new first choice.

My first impression of the O'Brien was quite positive. As I drove up to the building, it was very attractive from the outside, obviously old, but updated. We drove past it and into the parking lot next door where we were asked for cash for event parking. When I told the guy to charge the parking to my room, he explained that the garage is not affiliated […] with the hotel. He pointed out the hotel parking lot across the street. After we pulled around the block (one way streets) and entered the surface lot, we realized that there were not enough spaces for all of the guests. In fact, there was no space for us. When I asked at the desk about this, I was told that this is a common problem because there are not as many parking spaces as rooms. The guy at the desk pointed me toward a surface lot down the street. He told me that they would charge me a little more for the night than the parking rate I had been quoted online, but there was nothing he could do. Also, since our room was prepaid, there was nothing to reimburse. This was a minor inconvenience to me; in fact, when we went to retrieve our luggage, we found space enough for our family van in the hotel lot. Our first floor room was unimpressive. The carpet in the hallway and in the room was torn. I was led to believe online that they had a rollaway bed available, but they did not. When I left my room for ice, I noticed upon my return that the door didn't quite meet the door jam - with very little effort, I could have shoved the door open, despite the deadbolt being locked. I was extremely concerned and uncomfortable about this. I brought the man from the front desk to the room and asked him if he'd feel safe sleeping in there. He agreed he would not, and he immediately switched us to a similar room on the 3rd floor. Actually, at that point, things were looking up. This hotel was in a great location, right next to the Riverwalk. The room was very clean and very comfortable. The 24 hour coffee machine in the lobby was a much appreciated extra.

The hotel was nice and conveniently located to the river walk and quick access to the AlamoDome. They charged $10/day for parking when there was a lot right next to theirs that only charged $8. I felt the $10 was silly for a nice Hotel like this to charge, but the stay was enjoyable nonetheless.

Small hotel with not many amenities but it was quiet, clean and close to everything we wanted to see. Very friendly and helpful staff.

LOVED OUR STAY! 1/2 BLOCK FROM RIVERWALK. NICE AND CLEAN, VERY QUIET. STAFF WAS GREAT AND VERY HELPFUL WITH RESTARAUNTS AND DIRECTIONS TO OTHER SITES

I do want to mention that the the front desk person stayed extremely composed and very respectful under some extreme pressure from guest. Upon arrival, we found another guest very upset that Cable was not available. When we entered our room, the A/C did not work (temps reached 101 in town) and of course, no cable. We were placed in another room, where […] the a/c was adequate, but not satisfactory. A ceiling a/c that was on its last legs. The continental breakfast consists of a counter with cereal bars on the other side of the check-in counter with no place to sit or eat.The towels were rough and scratchy, no way luxurious as described in the brochure. As a matter of fact, the linen on the beds were not luxurious (we found a spider crawling on the bed), nor the bath robs. No balconies and the rooms were extremely cramped and small. Fabulous location for the things we wanted to do while in San Antonio and very reasonable rate considering the location. Attractive and affordable . Staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms were small but comfortable and had all the amenities that we needed for our visit. Will go back there on another visit.

Our stay here was entirely unremarkable. It's exceptionally difficult to find and is not well-marked. Parking in their designated lot costs extra and the balcony we were so looking forward to enjoying actually overlooked an alleyway and an adjacent parking lot. Strands of the berber carpet in our room were coming up and we never felt completely "clean" […] in our room. Its only real redeeming quality is its proximity to Hemisfair Park, The Alamo and the Riverwalk. Overall, not BAD. But not good. If we ever find ourselves back in San Antonio, we'll spend the extra few dollars and stay somewhere nicer. Mehr

Was an OK place to stay if looking for close, cheap(er) location to River Walk, Convention Center, Alamo, etc. Is an older hotel. The staff was awesome in makng amends to a hot, 3rd floor, streetside room I had initially (ask for backside room; 1st floor is cheapest)---kudos to Joseph & Christine who make my stay much more comfortable. We went to San Antonio to Celebrate my 21st Birthday, I have to say it was an aexpeience. Our hotel stay was awesome, we were only blocks away form everything we wanted to do. even the Alamo! I would Definately recommend this Hotel, If you like a convenient location and great service i would definatley recommend. The room was too small especially when you have two kids in the room with two parents. The jacuzzi works well though. The place was hard to find when you don't have GPS, although I was using my google map in my blackberry it was still hard to find. The staff were very helpful though. I needed to print my etickets for the SeaWorld and they graciously […] let me print my etickets. They have free breakfast which is a plus factor. Their parking is only $10/day in comparison to other big hotels charging at least $35/day! Overall, it was an ok hotel. My kids would love to stay in a place where they have swimming pool but this hotel does not. So, if you have small kids consider if you would to stay in this hotel. For the price paid definitely not worth going back. Very historic building. Couldn't tell from the outside it was nice inside but still bad first impression. CD player didn't work but was promptly replaced. No ice bucket in room used the trash can, didn't ask for a replacement. Hot tub in excellent condition and a bir plus for the occasion. Loved the River Walk very convenient to area. The only disapointment in the hotel was the shared balcony. Transit system great, even lost my wallet and it was returned to me through the transit system by 2:00. Blessing.

The O'Brien is a small hotel less than 1 block from the riverwalk and a few blocks from the King William district. The room was fine. You get a continental breakfast with pastries cereal and fruit. They had a waffle iron as well. The staff was helpful. Just make sure you check in early enough to be able to park in the hotel lot. The riverwalk was a short 2 blocks away. The room was clean and nice. If you are a light sleeper, the traffic noise could keep you awake as it did my friend, but I slept right through it.

If you like sorry hotel's, but desperate to be close to be close to riverwalk I guess its a choice.It sucks. Elavator kept breaking down. The rooms were pretty much mediocre and the Hotel clerk boxed my truck in because she couldn't find a parking spot.

The O'Brien Hotel was a nice surprise in San Antonio. Thought I'd get a little something less for the price but the place was great. Wonderful staff and the room was impeccable. It is also about a 5 minute walk from the main area of the Riverwalk so the location is perfect.

Great place to stay. Perfect location. Close to Riverwalk and all the places you need to visit while in San Antonio.

very convenient, nice room, adequate continental breakfast, very friendly staff. Only drawback was noise level, old single pane windows, fortunately not much traffic at night.

The O'Brien is quaint and in a great location, but there are no fitness facilities on-site. Seeing fitness facilities in their amenities, I did not bring outdoor workout clothes, so was really cold after jogging the half-mile to the gym. Luckily it wasn't raining.

Hotel was an interesting older hotel. I would judge that the rooms had been recently renovated, carpets and lobby/sitting room furniture looked quite new. We did however leave one comment for the staff concerning a dirty bathroom. Hotel was very close to the Riverwalk, less than 150 yards. Although the hotel is surrounded by parking facilities it is extremely close to interesting parts of the riverwalk. It's an old hotel and has its charms. Don't expect the Ritz. Staff very friendly and helpful.

The price is just right and it felt like a 4 star hotel. Convieniently located, overly friendly staff and the continental breakfast included belgian waffles! This hotel goes above and beyond what many do in the same price range.

The hotel was very clean. The staff was help and nice. The breakfast in the moring is what you expect a free breakfast will be. Beware ,however the hotel has 39 rooms but only 23 parking spaces. Show up early for the parking. if not you pay $6 a day in the public lot near by. BE EXTREMELY AWARE YOU MUST PAY THE $12 DOLLARS IF LEAVING YOUR CAR IN PUBLIC […] PARKING OVERNITE. THE PARKING COMPANY COMES BY AT MIDNITE TO CHECK PAYMENT. IF $6 IS NOT THERE FOR THE NEXT DAY YOU GET TOWED AND INPOUNDED. That does not make for a good trip.
