Avalon Hotel and Spa, a Grand Heritage Hotel - Portland

This is one of the best hotels. Great room with very comfortable bed, spa and gym is perfect, and terrific restaurant. Couldn't be better

We enjoy ourself for the most part. Our major complaints were the cleaniness of our bathroom, the breakfast which contained the hardest biscuits i have ever seen, and the resterrants complete lack of knowledge when it came to making a spanish coffee.

Wonderful hotel. Very nice, clean accomodations and helpful staff. Will definitely stay here again!

Nice stay, comfortable room, great customer service!

Ordered some wine at $46, they called to say they were out and would provide a comparably priced bottle. Later found the replacement was $114. Offered us sauna and hot tub, went there to find policies that prevented us from enjoying them as a couple.

Perfect.

Picked Avalon due to its location to OHSU and an early morning Dr. Appt. there. The signage was horrible and for people not aquatinted with the area. We arrived just after 9:00 pm and was told that everything was closed except room service and the resturatant next door. There were no pop machines available to get a 7-up just clorianted water.... had […] to go to resturant to get. We tipped the valet that night and in the morning and was not told until we checked out that there was.... A $19.00 charge for parking. I was furious...... this extra charge was no where in the pre-paperwork. Needless to say we were very happy with room and location to OHSU but not much else. We have to come back up in June so they have lost a return customer So sorry but I don't like paying for unexplained charges and having to track down a passing stranger to find location. We were looking forward to relaxing in sauna or hottub after the long trip...... Very disappointed. Mehr

This hotel was out dated and needs remodeling. Hotel has a parking garage but is NOT included in the room cost, parking is an additional $20 anight. The location of this hotel was the best aspect of my stay.

Everyone on staff was very accommodating. We needed to check in early and were given a late check out also. The room was beautiful and provided the peace we needed. We loved our riverside balcony and going for walks along the river. The spa was wonderful as well. We will stay again and recommend to friends.

the entire hotel is NOT WiFii - I had to change rooms in order to get my tablet and notebook working - after I unpacked. You should know that the balconies are NOT private - not only are you hanging out with your neighbors if you chose to sit on your balcony and if you have a river view - be prepared for joggers, bikers, row teams and more to go by […] starting first thing in the morning - and yes - if your curtains are open - they see right into the room. My stay was four nights - parking is $20 a day (overnite stay) The bed was very comfortable - room was very clean - had a great bathroom with separate tub and shower. While people were nice, service was average and even after a room change and a billing issue, no attempts were made to ensure I left a happy guest. If they would paint the outside rusty railings and step up their game with service this could be a fab hotel - valet was excellent. Mehr

Best continental breakfast ever in a hotel stay. Very comfortable bed and pillow. Didn't wish I had brought my own.

I was heading to Portland, OR for an interview and came across the Avalon on the listing on Hotels.com. Absolutely no regrets staying here! The room was very nice and clean. I'm picky about bathrooms and this one was gorgeous! Entire staff was friendly and room service was quick. Food was great as well. There is restaurant right next door if you don't […] want room service. Location was good. Close to downtown. All in all, I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there when I go back to Portland! Mehr

We were heading home to Seattle from a trip to California and were very happy with our stay. Very comfortable after a long drive. Staff was very professional and accomodating. We loved our Riverview Room. The bed faced out the huge picture windows so we could relax with a gorgeous view.

Overall the rooms were nice and it was a good stay but a couple of things bugged us. My wife and I couldn't use the spa together as the hot tub, and sanua's were in the change rooms. We ate at the attached restaurant and were not impressed with the level of service from our young waiter. To top it off the dish wasn't cooked and we had to send it  […] back. Mehr

Hotel is clean. Quiet room. Friendly staff. Conveniently located within walking distance of public transportation into city. Easy access to interstate. Parking is $19 a night.

We loved the AVALON! We wondered if the location was going to be a detriment, but, in fact, it turned out to be great. It was wonderful to be on the river and 5 minutes from the hectic activity of the downtown. The valet, check-in staff, restaurant, and spa personnel were all above and beyond the expected norm. Our room was well-appointed and comfortable. […] My advice is to pay the few dollars more for a river view. The hillside was "ok" but since you are right on the river, don't make the mistake I made! Get the river view. Breakfast was simple but completely satisfactory. Delicious homemade granola. I WILL go back. I won't ever stay downtown again. You won't be sorry here. Mehr

The hotel staff was very nice, the valet guys were very pleasant and eager to help. I didn't notice the 20.00 parking fee till I got there. The spa service and massage therapist (Dani) was wonderful, would recommend. Disappointed that the room did not have a refrigerator or microwave, but the coffee was great (had a coffee maker!!). Bed fair. The continental […] breakfast was ok, very hard muffins. The restaurant was disappointing also, pricey for what you get and taste wasn't there. Small bowl of lettuce with minimal dressing and no other vegs, just lettuce & herbs. Dinner entree also disappointing. But again, staff was great. Mehr

This is my second time staying here. It is a beautiful hotel, very close to downtown and has beautiful views of the city. I would recommend this Hotel, highly.

Very clean hotel, quiet room and close to public transportation. Everyday a tasty flavored water in the lobby. Breakfast was adequate and convenient. Appreciated the umbrella/ Overall a very nice place to stay. I highly recommend this hotel.

I loved the free limited spa services but was frustrated by the $19 mandatory valet parking when my car was parked 150 feet from the front door. Overall, very luxurious.

This hotel was much more than I expected. It's a hotel/spa so there are affordable spa services on-site. Everyone was very friendly. I had a room with a view of the river and it was a spectacular view in the mornings. There is a restaurant next door with good food, very convenient since the hotel is not located immediately near any other food establishments. The hotel location was far from where we spent most of our trip which was downtown portland. Even though its just a ten to fifteen minute drive, the roads getting there are poorly marked and caused a lot of confusion when trying to follow directions, but thats nothing compared to the valet/bell service ! They were very unorganized and not helpful! when […] we arrived, the only two valet attendants had my husband reversing and maneuvering our own vehicle around just to park in front of the lobby, when we felt that since we are guests arriving they should've took the initiative to do that themselves! After we had parked, no one offered to help w/our luggage or bothered to get our keys, our name or give us a valet ticket. Upon check in we had to address this problem to the front desk who happened to flag one of the valet attendants down who was walking pass. He seemed surprised that we didn't leave the keys in the car and why we didn't get a valet ticket in the first place. I was confused because there as only two attendants outside who did not seem busy at all and for him to question his own actions was appalling. Later on in the evening as we had left the hotel and returned around midnight. There was no one there to valet our vehicle so we again self parked in front of the hotel lobby and had turned our keys to the lady at the front desk who said she will take care of it. Other than that annoyance, the hotels complimentary breakfast was ok. nothing fancy or anything exciting but our stay in our room was nice. Overall the hotel was very clean, trendy, comfy and chic, & room service was prompt when we called for extra toothbrush & razors. Nice rooms but very poor valet service. Mehr

Our one night stay on the second floor was plush and roomy. Loved our king bed with ample blankets and pillows. Room seemed larger than usual. Bathroom had separate tub and shower. Appreciated all the green amenities - compostable bowls, spoons, etc at our continental breakfast just down the hall. Noticed some water damage on the floor molding near […] the balcony door; probably can't be avoided in a wet place like Portland. Balcony doors have unique setting that allows top to swing away from the jam for ventilation. Parking is valet only at $19/day. Had to park a few blocks away, on one way street. Wish there had been closer, cheaper, or included parking. Would stay again so I could try out the spa! Smelled and looked great. Mehr

Great Hotel very relaxing and peaceful. However they offer no way to purchase small items like toiletries you may have forgotten. I needed some Ibuprophen for a headache and the last thing I wanted to do was drive downtown for some.

They do charge extra $20 for parking each night. There is no self- parking nearby so only option is to avail their $20 valet parking. Breakfast was very basic.. I have seen 2 star hotels serve a better breakfast. No hot milk or bagles. Just muffins, cereal (with cold milk), fruits (orange + bananas), orange juice anf coffee. Secondly there was no place […] to eat breakfast except taking it back to your room. Except for the above two minuses, hotel was clean. Room was comfortable and all other services (cable tv, WiFi etc.) was available I didn't try the Spa which was free so it may be another plus. Mehr

Overworked, exhausted and mentally fatigued, my girlfriend and I decided that we needed an escape, a one day getaway from our home and life in Seattle. We randomly found ourselves in Portland at Avalon after finding a great deal on the room. We were pleasantly surprised by the spacious, comfortable room and amazing service. The rooms were modern, clean […] and inviting. The details, ie the bed , shower head, and spacious bathroom resonated with the fact that we were not at home. Each of us found ourselves relieved and relaxed even before we enjoyed the hotel's spa amenities. Avalon was a great experience that my girlfriend and I will always remember as our Portland getwaway. I got this hotel last minute... I was absolutely blown away by the View, Decor, Staff... So many things made this the best place we stayed on our trip. The continental breakfast was served by the elevator, which was different and nice, (sometimes I don't feel like getting all dressed to go to the lobby), the restaurant made their own cereal/granola... […] Truly the best I have ever had. I called the hotel and am considering having them send me some as I can't stop thinking/talking about it. THE VIEW OF THE LAKE WAS STUNNING. The staff was helpful and really liked the info I shared with them about the hotel I stayed at in Seattle, that was cool and nice as well. The Maxwell... although the Avalon was one step Finer! This is my 4th or 5th stay in your hotel. It is just right for me. The Northwest style of the hotel and its rooms is very pleasing. I love the decor in the room-the colors and the furnishings re very comfortable, and the Asian flavor is perfectly done. Your staff is always courteous and very helpful. This hotel is right on the Willamette River. If you walk toward downtown, you can jump on the Portland streetcar at the South Waterfront station (less than 1/2 mile from the hotel) and ride in to downtown and the Pearl District. If you walk to the next station (River Place), you're in the free zone and don't pay a fare. I've walked all the way into […] downtown along the waterfront on a nice day. Going the otherway, there is a paved jogging trail along the river for a few miles. I've seen sea planes practicing taking off, sailing classes, people in kayaks and lots of birds. The hotel itself is very nice--the rooms are beautiful and very comfortable. Complimentary reliable internet. The bathrooms are large and elegant. The view overlooking the river is wonderful, but the view the other way is fine also. There is a well equipped gym open 24 hours, and spa (which I've never used). There is a continental breakfast that is very nice--good pastries, yogurt, excellent granola, coffee, oj and grapefruit juice, as well as fresh fruit. This was my 6th visit to the Avalon and the only thing I don't like about it is paying for valet parking--the lot is right there at the hotel, not secure, not covered and I resent paying for the parking plus a tip every time I get or drop off my car. Last time I just parked across the street about 1/2 block away. Mehr

The hotel is very nice. Comfy robes, big beds, large bathroom, nice deck looking out at the Willamette River. It is not close to anything within walking distance, and valet parking only is expensive. It has separate spas for men & women, not so good, and it closes at 9:00 P.M . so we didn't use it. Nice continental breakfast on every floor, and an excellent […] restaurant right next door. Hard to beat the quality and comparably reasonable price of this hotel. If you travel for a living --- and Portland is your stop for an over-night business trip --- this hotel is a great option. If you like to fit in a morning job/walk, the water front trail just outside your door is beautiful --- you will wish you didn't need to go back to your room […] and shower up. The above is written as an observation (even though we did walk the trail) --- this time we spent time there because we needed to vacate our home due to the fumes from our newly refinished wood floors. I am, now ,hoping that we need to refinish our floors next year. Mehr

This has become our favorite place to stay in Portland as the rooms are clean, large and attractive and the entire hotel is quiet. The staff is incredibly friendly, yet professional. If you can, get a river view room and go for a walk on the river path. The hotel is just minutes from downtown, but a little tricky to get to without a GPS.

I only stayed one night, so I don't know if the forced valet fee of $19 was per night or a one time thing. I didn't really mind it as we took a cab every where but, I could see it being a pain. Located on the River but in a hard to find location that is very convenient to the incredible hospital complex up the hill in South Portland, The Avalon is a hidden delight. It is visually gorgeous in every detail. We had their smallest room and it was perfect with a wonderful king size bed and two chairs and a table and desk. The amenities of the fitness […] center and spa were a real asset. It is 5 minutes from downtown by car and 10 by light rail. WE also stayed downtown on this trip and preferred being able to walk everywhere but this is still a great option and perfect for hospital access. Mehr

We had a room on the 5th floor with a beautiful view of the river and balcony. Appreciated that the bed faced the river and we woke to the view. It was quiet and peaceful. Nice bathroom too!
