Deer Lodge - Lake Louise

Wer allerneusten modernen Komfort liebt, ist im Hotel Deer Lodge falsch. Wer aber Freude an alt-ehrwürdige Atmospäre und der Erhaltung historischer Bauten hat, der wird begeistert sein. Das Hotel ist liebevoll gepflegt und, soweit machbar, erhalten, wie es vor vielen Jahrzehnten einmal entstanden ist. Selbstverständlich hat jedes Zimmer ein Bad, aber […] es gibt auch die Bitte, nicht alle Wasserhähne (Waschbecken und Dusche/Badewanne) und die Toilettenspülung gleichzeitig zu betreiben. Das Leitungssystem kann das nicht immer leisten. Das ist der Preis, den die sehr bedachtsame Renovierung gefordert hat. Auch das Fehlen eines Fahrstuhls fällt in diese Kategorie. Bei Bedarf helfen aber die MitarbeiterInnen, das Gepäck bis in das zweite Obergeschoss zu bringen. Für die kleinen Einschränkungen im Komfort erhält man eine Atmosphäre, die eben nicht steril, plüschig oder schlicht protzig ist wie in vielen neuen Häusern, sondern eher das Gefühl vermittelt, in eine "gute, alte Zeit" zurückversetzt zu sein. Ich fand das Hotel sehr schön und für mich genau passend. Andere mögen das benachbarte, teurere Fairmont Chauteau Lake Louise bevorzugen. Ich würde immer das Deer Lodge empfehlen. Mehr

Zimmer war sehr klein, der Putzservice hat nicht alles richtig sauber gemacht. Badezimmer war abgewohnt, WC tropfte. Beim Einchecken wollten die mir nochmal den schon bezahlten Preis abziehen. Für den Preis stimmte die Gegenleistung leider nicht.

Lodge mit sehr schönen Zimmern und Säalen Preise o.k. Frühstück nicht mitinbegriffen aber gut. Lage fussläufig zum See Lake Louise an kleiner aber tagsüber touristisch stärker frequentierter Strasse was die Nutzung des Balkons der strassenseitigen Zimmer beeinträchtigt

Die Lodge liegt landschaftlich reizvoll, man muss aber Abstriche in Sachen Komfort machen. Die Einrichtung des Hotels und der Zimmer ist recht dunkel und ein wenig altmodisch, was aber auch einen gewissen Charme hat. Die Küche ist hervorragend. Was die Wellnessangebote angeht, bleiben bei der muffig riechenden und nur lauwarmen Sauna (mit Zeitschaltuhr) […] Wünsche offen. Der Service (z.B. Ausleihen eines Föns, Tipps, Internetzugang) ist sehr gut. Man muss es erlebt haben! Mehr

Sehr große und komfortable Zimmer + Betten, neu renoviert. Das Hotel bietet ein italienisches und ein Buffet-Restaurant + eine gemütliche Bar mit offenem Kamin + Live-Musik. Großes Hallenschwimmbecken.

Die Zimmer sind einfach und sehr klein (Platz für ein Queenbed), das Haus ist alt. In unserem Zimmer war die Heizung nicht zu regulieren, so dass es extrem heiß im Zimmer war und nur ein kleines Fenster zur nicht funktionierenden Kühlung zur Verfügung stand. Die Lage zum See ist super.

Excellent attendance by reception staff.We were disappointed in the evening meal, the main was more sized as an entree than a main.Thanks

The hotel atmosphere was amazing. Rustic sitting room, games room, reading room, very nice. It seemed a bit run down though, the hot tub was out of order, the ice machine was out of order. Our main problem though was the heat. While we were in the dining room for dinner (which was absolutely fabulous!!) the radiator began to heat up and our room was […] a sauna when we got back. We turned off the radiator and openned all the windows but our room stayed hot until around 3 am. The radiator kept turning itself on and heating the room some more. The other issue was that the people staying above us were very actively running around until well past midnight and making it very loud in our room. Mehr

We have been travelling though US and Canada for a month and this is the worst hotel experience to date. The room was about 2.5 x 3.5 metres with twin beds. No TV, no way to make tea or coffee (it was available in the lounge from 7am to 11am but what guest would still be silly enough to stick around for that?)

Deer Loge is an beautiful old building but with it's age comes a few quirks. Computer users be warned, the room I was in had a three pronged power socket in the bathroom only. In the future I will take an extension cord so I can recharge my phone and laptop in a better place than balanced on the edge of the sink. The heating in my room was impossible […] to control and for some reason the cleaning person left the window wide open when it was -1C outside so it took some time to warm the space up when I returned. Despite these quirks I liked the old fashioned cozy feeling of the building, the staff was friendly and the location was ideal. I hope to visit again. Mehr

The service, the food, the location and the ambience of this hotel are all EXCELLENT. While I would highly recommend it, there are some quirks to be aware of because it was built in the 1920s. The hot and cold water are touchy. There are a lot of stairs and some uneven surfaces, perhaps not the best choice for those with mobility issues.

Do not expect the luxury or the Fairmont Hotel when arriving. This hostel-style hotel has the bare minimum essentials and a very out-dated layout. Once you get past the idea of no elevator, no TV, and little to no storage or movable space within your rooms, then the hotel becomes quaint, and unique and has loads of rustic charm. The in-lodge restaurant […] was nothing to dance about, but the food was tolerable and the serving staff were pleasant enough. The lodge is perfect if you plan your stay around being outside of the hotel; hiking paths, skiing, skating, shopping etc. are all within walking or a short drives distance. Bring your own coffee maker or tea kettle, as the hotel has none to offer guests outside of restaurant dining. The view from the hot tub was the highlight of our stay. Mehr

It located a short drive away from the Ski Chalet, a shuttle bus is provided. Hotel is supplied with several unique antiques. The hot tub is wonderful, walking distance to Hotel Lake Louise. It is not a new hotel, but has a lot of old world charm.

This place is very romantic. It's more like a cottage than a hotel. Loved staying there. The staff was amazing and so welcoming that I felt like I was visiting family (the good side ones!). The ski hill shuttle driver was super nice and accommodating. The food in the restaurant was like a 5 star place. Staff accommodated us when our room seemed too noisy at night. Comfortable bed, clean, adequately spacious room. Food was tasty but pricey. Wifi connection was fine.

The Deer Lodge was very tired and is badly in need of a renovation. No TV in room and Wyfi is hopeless, also the rooms are very noisey.

We had a lovely stay at Deer Lodge. Loved all the history and neat old building. Everyone was very helpful and polite. The room was a surprise, small but clean, no TV. Should have maybe read closer details just expected it. The room also was cooking hot, in the middle of winter we had the window open and slept with a sheet only. Clean, quiet, relaxed spot with friendly service. Very well maintained, even given the snow and sand carried in on ski boots. Restaurant could benefit from additional moderately-priced items. Nice water conservation, especially appreciated near the glacier.

Checked-in last New Year with my girlfriend. When we arrived we where meet with a foul smell. No elevator and had to carry our bags using the stairs. The room was very small. No coffee in the room, no TV either. A cheaper Motel-6 room is larger and better. Not worth the price we pay. Young kids where smoking pot just outside the main entrance. Stayed at the Deer Lodge for one night on the way to BC. Charming rustic appeal from a bygone age. Room was small with no TV of even a chair, but perfectly servicable nonetheless. Good bathroom with plenty of hot water and a toilet with a reliable flush. Good bar, restuarant, lounge with fireplace, and a couple of cool old clunky pianos so that you […] can annoy the other guests. Great rooftop hot tub with arguably one of the worlds's best views. I thought that the room was very good and I took photos and will post to Trip Advisor. We were in an old wing, and the twin beds had great linens, the restaurant food was excellent, I love the lounge around the fireplace, and also the rooftop sauna/whirlpool and 2 min walk to Lake Louise. This is a very neat lodge right near Lake Louise (walking distance). It is a rustic place in the style of the early 1900s, complete with sitting areas and fireplace. The rooms are comfortable, and the furnishings are tasteful. Be aware that the atmosphere is all there is - the rooms do not have TVs or wifi. There is a rooftop hot tub that is nice, […] but no pool. You come to this place for the ambiance. If you want modern amenities, seek another spot. Mehr

Could hear the person in the next room perfectly, the bed was very small for me at 5' 10 and my wife at 5'4 with a combined weight under 300 lbs. It was quite uncomfortable. The bathroom was something else, the ceiling was covered with brown drip like spots? The walls had dirt like streaks down them to the fuzzy covered baseboards? My favorite place to stay in Louise

A lovely log lodge, with a flavor of 'the old days'. The newer rooms are larger and more modern but also more expensive. We thought they were worth it. Dining room was beautiful but a bit on the expensive side. The pool table in the basement had one cue that we shared. It worked. On Friday evening there was a lecture on wolves the we and several youngsters […] enjoyed. It's an easy stroll to the luxurious Chateau Lake Louise with all its shops. We had supper one night in the pub in the lower part of the Chateau and it was less pricey and kind of fun. Skated on the ice on Lake Louise. Deer lodge is just a great place if you appreciate a bit of charm, and it has a lot. Mehr

We didn't have high expectations of this hotel based on other reviews we'd read. But at the same time, we didn't think it would too bad for one night. Boy, were we wrong. The hotel is old, dirty, smelly and mouldy - one could say, hazardous to your health. Check in wasn't a problem and the staff were friendly enough. The hotel has no lifts and the staff […] didn't offer to help us with our luggage. Our room was on the third floor. On entering our room, our noses were hit with a strong musty stench. The room was tiny. Not even enough room around the bed to open our suitcases. The bed covers were so old, worn and stained that I was too scared to pull them back out of fear of what I might find. There was no tv. The bathroom was disgusting. It was tiny. The door wouldn't close. The bath tub looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. And there were strange yellow splatters over the wall and ceiling. To say the least... we carried our bags back down the three flights of stairs and left the hotel, forfeiting our nights stay. Despite the shocked and concerned looks on our faces the staff didn't seem surprised that we were checking out without staying the night. I know this review sounds harsh, I don't often write reviews - I've stayed in my fair share of poorly rated hotels too - but in this case, if I could save one other person experiencing what we did and losing their money... it would be a good thing. The location of this hotel is fantastic. The Deer Lodge is located right near the Chateau Lake Louise and it is surrounded by Lake Louise and the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The hotel is charming and it has a lot of historical characteristics. The restaurant and the food was good. The hot tub and the sauna were also nice. On a minor note, there are no […] TVs in any of the guest rooms, however, that shouldn't matter much since most people don't go to such a beautiful location to watch TV. From a maintenance perspective, the hotel had a musty smell pretty well everywhere and the room was cold even though the heater was cranked. Finally, the shower situation was awkward. The shower unit was handheld (i.e. not mounted to the wall) and the tub had a curtain that only surrounded half of it. As a result, it was hard to shower properly and to keep the water from spilling out into the bathroom. Overall, if you can get a good rate, it's worth the stay, but I wouldn't spend too much on a room here. While I appreciate the 'old school' charm, I think some upgrades are in order (e.g. the shower stall). Mehr

The hotel part was quite good but the restaurant was terrible. The food was very over priced and came out cold and the service was the worst we've had in years.

The room is so small you cant even open a suitecase in it. Also it's so hot in the room that we couldn't sleep at all. We had open the whole night (-10 outside) the window open and the heating off but couldn't still not slepp. The best thing is the wirelss internet access even if they have a strainge website blocking system. Hot Tube is cool, parking […] is also fine. But if you have a few dollars left stay in the fairmont not here. Mehr

From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and very helpful. We booked a budget room and it was cozy. The games room with the pool table was a hit with the teenagers. Food in hotel was good, service awesome. We stayed there on Christmas day, and the hotel surprised us with gifts. It was awesome and very unexpected.

The only reason I gave a 4 rating is because of the noise. You can hear guests in the hall way. We stayed at a quieter time of year and it wasn't too bad. If the hotel was full beware.

Deer Lodge is rustic and simple, with a location that can't be beat! Staff were lovely, the hot tub on the roof was perfect after a day of x-country skiing and breakfast was absolutely delicious (our waitress Molly was so sweet and funny!). If you are the kind of person who goes to a hotel expecting to spend all day in your massive room with an enormous […] tv, this is not the place for you. If you appreciate friendly service, warmth, history and good food, after you spend the day enjoying the mountains, then this is a great pick! Mehr

To be fair this is a very old establishment, has character for its time. It does not have the modernity or comforts of its close Chateau neighbor. You have to put up with the noisy heating system especially for light sleepers like myself. The restaurant was excellent and the staff very helpful. I did enjoy my stay there regardless of the above. Stayed in an Heritage room with balcony. Lovely comfortable room and bed with attractive pictures Five minuts walk from Lake which avoids all the tourists coming and going but gives access to walks and lakeside We had dinner twice in the restaurant. Food was excellent with interesting dishes from local food. Service was dire. Servers walking around […] aimlessly without supervision providing slow and unfriendly service. Deer Lodge has great character capturing a bygone era. A pleasant lounge area, good restaurant dinner menu, pleasant staff and the best of locations near Lake Louise, walks, the Village. The rooms are cramped with broken light fittings and dodgy plumbing. The pillows are paper thin and when you ask for replacements the staff just tell you that you have to wait for house keeping to get new ones in the morning... What good will they be to me in the morning ? Avoid this place and stay at one of the cheaper hotels down in the village, […] it's only a five minute drive to the lake rather than a five minuet walk from deer lodge. Mehr

Make sure you book a heritage room as all the other rooms are very small. The hotel is not well maintained with roof tiles missing and lights out in corridors and rooms.

To be honest, for the price they were asking for the room, i was very disappointed. The room was harly big enough to fit the double bed in. There was no air conditioning and the atmosphere was old and tired. When I complained about the size of the room I wan moved to one that was about 50% larger. It was on a corner that provided a cross breeze. I appreciated […] the fact they the staff was happy to maker the change, but I really should not have had to ask. Mehr
