I booked a superior room at the Hawkwell House Hotel as a birthday treat for my husband as he wanted to explore Oxford. We arrived on Sunday at 12.00 and out room wasn't ready, which wasn't a problem as we wanted to go to Oxford. On our return just before 17.00 we were given the key to our room in Elm House with no directions how to reach the separate accommodation. There was no one in the bar to serve us a drink and when someone did arrive they could not make a Bloody Mary as did not have ingedients! The cleanliness of the Ladies washroom in the main building also left a lot to be desired with overflowing bins and toilet roll holders hanging off the wall. When we arrived at our hotel room there was no tempur mattress as stated on the website, the cobwebs on all bedroom walls looked as if they had been knitted and the TV did not work. The bath had not been cleaned and there was one small bar of soap - the size of a grape for the entire bathroom. The stay was a big disappointment and I would not recommend anything about this hotel except the breakfast.

The hotel is located in a very nice area of oxford and just 10 min from city center by bus. It is really quiet and my room was really romantic and big. I spent a lovely night there.

Although our room was a little dated the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was really good too. The hotel is not in the centre of town so a little inconvenient in that respect. I think perhaps a little overpriced for what it was.

Located definitely beyond town limits, although bus connection is convenient. Country-style settings, simple and somewhat charming. Lovely river nearby, with an old lock and trails. Taxicab to and from Oxford is about 8 pounds.

The hotel is conveniently located near the 3 and 4 bus lines into downtown Oxford, only a 5min walk to these. The staff is VERY good, and were eager to meet our every request. However, the rooms can be very loud if the guests above you tend to make alot of noise. More specifically, although the Elm House has been renovated, the basic structure is the original building and so the floors are creaky and thin. My girlfriend and I are in our late 20s, so we're not too picky about these things. But we just couldn't sleep well for several nights because the guests above had a young energetic child. Also, the buffet breakfast (which was included) was not very good. Quite bland. We stopped eating there after the second morning because it was basically the same stuff each day.

This hotel while not central located to oxford, does have a bus stop 2 blocks away which will take you to the City Center. The hotel staff was very helpful, my girlfriend feel ill while on the trip and seemingly the entire staff was made aware about it and made sure we had everything we needed at all times. Breakfast is included and can be delivered for a small fee. If the above doesn't convince you to stay here, they have tempurpedic beds, i slept great!

Based on reviews left about Hawkswell House, I really wasn't sure what we were going to get. Some said how good the hotel was, others how bad the service was. I would just like to say what a fantastic job the receptionist was doing when we arrived. She was obviously extremely busy and running the front of house single handedly. This did not stop her from being anything but polite and courteous however. She was so very helpful. The rooms were great, just the right size with everything you could need. The bed was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept in! The only two things that could have improved the stay were better water temperature adjustment in the shower (you either had it quite hot or luke warm, no inbetween), and the selection at breakfast (there were no eggs left by the time we got down to eat). Other than this, for what we paid, I think we were extremely lucky.

Hawkwell house is a great hotel for a weekend getaway. I would not recommend it if you have never been to oxford before since it is not in the city center. It is very romantic and had a great breakfast. Overall, stay here if you want a great room for a great price and don't mind a few minute ride to all the sights!

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in the end of january. Our room 406 was in one of the sub-buildings quiet and very comfortable, with all facilities. The hotel is a little out of the centre but a busstop is at 5 mins walk. Very helpfull staff and great breakfast.

I booked this hotel for a Birthday treat for my sister and I and our other halves, and it was great for what we needed. One of the rooms was not ready when we checked in at 2pm, but as I had booked two rooms this was not a problem, although I suspect it would be an issue in other circumstances- especially as it is after the alloted check-in time. The rooms were comfortable and clean. Our rooms had memory foam beds which were definitely an added bonus! The bar in the hotel was great, very comfortable and with a few different places to sit, the bar staff were also very pleasant, although the drinks were rather expensive! The only downside of the stay was the breakfast. It was a English breakfast buffet which was totally inedible, the crowning glory was the scrambled eggs that looked like a grey porridge. The staff in the restaurant also seemed as though they did not want to be there and were not at all helpful, when they collected our still full plates they did not even bat an eyelid- obviously something they're used to. It was a really disappointing end to our stay. I would only recommend this hotel if you didn't want to eat breakfast, as aside from that it's lovely.

Bewertet von J aus Cornwall am Dez 8, 2008
The hotel was very very average! The decor of the halls etc is dated and naff. The room was a little better but basic and the bathroom was dated and a little tired looking. The highlight of the stay was the bed, which was incredably comfortable. In the morning, our room had no hot water and after calling reception three times, they finally confirmed we would not be getting any hot water that day! They then suggested I used a room two floors down in order to shower and start my day. Basically, the hotel is cheap and average! You get what you pay for and thats not a lot!

The hotel and room were quite luxurious, but let down by one or two details. Neither of the plugs in the bathroom drained properly, and the windows didn't fit well so there were some drafts. Having the breakfast tables relaid for dinner around us on our first morning was a bit off-putting. The hotel handled an incident with another guest (during which the police were called) with discretion and professionalism. Overall, I would recommend this hotel.

Bewertet von Z aus Dorset am Aug 13, 2008
We visited in August 2008. The hotel was much better than we expected, it's in a lovely part of oxford. You can walk from the hotel down to Iffley Lock and along the river into oxford centre. You come out by the Head of the River Pub (a bit dark to walk home after a night out but you can get a taxi for about £7). If you want to save a bit of money off the price of a central oxford hotel this really is a good choice. Rooms were nice and spacious, clean, really comfortable beds with tempur matresses. The staff were really helpful although usually quite busy on reception. Breakfast is good, there is a choice of fruit, yogurt, cereal, pastries, or a fried breakfast. The waiting staff were helpful and quickly brought toast and coffee. THey were a bit busy the second day as the hotel was full of guests from a wedding the day before but they were very good if you were a bit patient. There is also a restaurant and bar at the hotel which looked very nice although we didn't try them, we ate in town. You do need to be prepared for a bit of a walk into town, but if you're away for a leisurely break Iffley lock is beautiful, the hotel is in a lovely area, this is real England at it's best, a lovely peaceful walk in the countryside. Would definately stay here again if visiting Oxford.

a beautiful looking hotel in lovely grounds. the rooms are comfortable. HOWEVER - this is totally spoiled by the WORST SERVICE I have experienced in ten years. The girl at check in was friendly enough, but ignored me whilst chatting to a colleague. I asked if she could book a taxi for 8pm - down we came, at 8:05, a taxi arrived, we got in, to be told it wasn't our taxi it was for a member of staff (I would have thought he would have given up his cab for us - HE DIDN'T). We missed our dinner reservation as the taxi had not been booked! Next morning, down to breakfast - a sea of dirty tables - not a single table made up! No staff around. We sat at a dirty table for 5 minutes, no one came - so I went off and spotted a "waiter" in the kitchens, asked for a clean table, was greeted by a grunt. 5 minutes later, waiter came in put knives and folks in front of us, on a dirty table, took away the dirty plates and left us amid the crumbs. There was hardly any food left - no sausage or bacon, one spoonful of eggs! Again, I went off to find someone, 10 more minutes and a few low quality sausages and some terrible bacon tuned up, was dumped into the warming trays and off they went again. I cannot state things more plainly - DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL IF YOU WANT A NICE BREAK, THE STAFF DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE GUESTS!

If you are going to Oxford, I recommend the Hawkwell. I was in Oxford to give a paper at a philosophy conference at Lady Margaret Hall. The location is great for winding down after a busy day. The staff is pleasant. The rooms are well-kept. The bathrooms are very nice and clean. You can catch the number 4 bus and get into Oxford in less than ten minutes from there. Overall, a great location and a very nice hotel.
