Gainsborough Hotel - London

Hotel typical of all similar sized places in Europe. Old building modernised some years ago and now slightly tatty. Serive Ok and pleasant enough. Facilities fine and breakfast OK.Nothing out of the ordinary pretty much what you would expect from a short stay city hotel.But similarly nothing unpleasant.

The staff were friendly and were helpful on the whole thats the end of the good points. I booked a twin room which turned out was very tiny. The only usable plug socket was an extension lead on the floor, which we had to use to boil the kettle. This is dangerous practice. The shower only supplied cold water. I didn't have a shower that morning, but […] had to wait until I returned home. This then made me late for an appointment. Very disappointed. I don't think I will be staying their again. Mehr

Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Public rooms very nice decor and excellent breakfast. Good situation. Our room couldnt have been smaller, and the bathroom was very cold.

The single accommodation was tiny, hardly room to move, It was okay for one night but could not have spent another night in such a small room. Access to transport was fantastic, the hotel is so well positioned for London Central and also the airport. It was a pleasure to get on to the tube at South Kensington and go straight to the airport without having […] to go to Paddington Station, also so much cheaper. Mehr

A worn-out "four"-star hotel. Not a great experience for sure, but the location near the museums is indeed really nice.

Next to the hotel is a private club. It plays loud music until 3am. They put me in the room closest , so I was woken up at 1am to loud music. When I went and asked to move to another room for the rest of the night, i was told that this happens all the time. If it happens all the time, why put people in that room ? use it as a store room or something. […] Moving to another room was done without fuss, although the other room was smelly and they had left the window open, so were obviously aware it was a smelly room. If i had been put in a non-smelly quiet room , I would have been recommending this hotel, but because I was treated with contempt, I can't! Mehr

The Gainsborough hotel rooms are very small in size. I am a person that does not like to be in very small areas. I felt very cramp up and did not have any room to walk around. It was just enough room for 1 person. I brought my daughter over to stay for a couple of days and had bump into to each other a few times. The tubs are long, narrow and the glass […] protector should have been longer and wider so water could not leak out. The area is very noisy so I did bring some hear plugs which help some. It is on a main street where cars drive down alot and you can hear all the people talking from the streets if you have a room on the front side of the hotel. It was not as close to my daughter's dorm where I thought is was in walking distance from maping it on walking directions. Mehr

The night club in the basement makes it almost impossible to sleep...

will never stay there again.Booked for an upgrade on the internet, Because it showed a four poster bed and larger room.But when i got ther was shown a room that was nothing like the picture,Then told me that was a mistake,When i complained, the reply was, Sorry.....

very friendly reception, very helpful man checked us in. We did not take breakfast there as we were out too early the next morning. Room was comfortable and clean. Bed very comfy.

I had a very enjoyable stay. The staff were pleasant and very helpful. The location was good for the tube and it was easy to get about central London. Look forward to staying there again.

I arrived at 11am and they wanted to charge gbp 50 for an early check in. This hotel only had one thing in mind and that was to rip off the each ans single customer as much as possible. They have probably never heard about the benefit of repeating customers. When I told the staff to tell their manager i was told to speak to him because he didnt listen […] to anyone. I feel sorry for the staff working for such a bad mgmt. I will never come back. Mehr

I stayed at the Gainsborough Hotel for almost a week, and frankly- it was the worst hotel I've ever visited. First of all- the phone was broken in my room, and it couldn’t be fixed. They did offer to transfer me to another room - but just the day after. The second room I was transferred to was even worst- It was so tiny that you had to move thinks in […] order to pass from the bad to the toilet, and it had no closet so I had to put my stuff on the desk, the bathroom was broken and the air-condition didn't work. Asking for another transfer was too much- and I was offered to pay more and upgrade my reservation in order to get another room. And it wasn't the end- the service was horrible, there was a false fire alarm that was on for more than 5 min in the middle of the night, both rooms were very noisy, and more and more.. As a physician I travel a lot, and I've never been to such a worst hotel. I really think it deserved less than 2 stars , so that other guests wouldn't be misleaded like I was Dr S. F Mehr

We booked the Gainsborough as we were going to be visiting the Royal Albert Hall for a concert. The hotel was clean and the staff helpful and efficient. Our room was clean and very nicely decorated. It was a little "tired" in that the mattress was a bit springy and encouraged us to roll together. Sheets and towels a little threadbare, and the air-conditioner, […] a permanently installed portable unit struggled to achieve any cooling effect. This hotel has tiny rooms, a somewhat expensive (very expensive daily, ok for 5 days) supplemental charge for internet, shabby and dated furnitures, noisy and barely functional airconditioning, and pounding club music invading on Friday night, but its location, right by the museums of South Kensington, makes up for all that. I'd look for a nicer place, […] at a similar price, but would consider staying here again, just for the great neighbourhood. Mehr

The room was very clean and while slightly outdated, the staff were friendly and the location cant be beat. A 3 minute walk from the South Kensington tube station it's just as easy to get to key locations in central London as it is to get to the airport (40 minutes to Heathrow for 5 pounds as opposed to paying 18 pounds for the express to Paddington). […] As major museums are at the doorstep - and a 10 minute walk o famous Harrod's, I would definitely recommend this hotel. I've stayed in London a lot and while I've shelled out 2x the money for a trendier vibe in the Soho / Bloomsbury area, this was definitely worth it. As a solo traveller who wanted to focus on museums this time, it fit the bill. Mehr

Fabulous value in a great location. I was worried, but the room was just fine, staff was very nice and the whole experience went great! Room was tiny and had all I needed. Clean and fresh!! Highly recommend! Very close to South Kensington Tube and one block to V&A Museum!!!

Beware the nightclub below this hotel. On Thursday nights especially the noise until 2am is unbearable. The hotel is fully aware of this problem yet there is no warning when you check in. You WILL NOT sleep!

very nice hotel. 5 min walk to the tube. great service.

The hotel was nice enough, but you could hear everything that was going on in the room next door. We were in a basement room, so we also got to listen to the traffic and smell the cigarette smoke of the people who were hanging out on the sidewalk.

There is a club in the basement of the building adjacent to the hotel: Ghost, Inc. It's open on Friday and Saturday nites, and plays loud music that makes the first-floor rooms of the Gainsborough Hotel shudder with a disco beat. Rooms 111 (our room) and 112 are especially bad. This goes on till exactly 2:30 AM. Also, cigarette smoke infiltrated our […] bathroom through the ventilation duct - I closed the door, but it still stank in there. My husband and I are around 60 years old and didn't feel like partying. After our Friday-nite disaster, the hotel manager moved us to a different room on the third floor, where we never heard a thing on Saturday nite, except for some of the kids yelling in the street as they left the club. The Gainsborough used to be our favorite hotel in London, but it seems to have changed hands about ten years ago, and it's gotten kinda threadbare. The rooms are clean and comfortable enough, but then our room keys kept pooping out - the magnetic instructions wouldn't hold. The staff is nice enough, but they don't seem to know much. My husband left his business binder in the our first room, overlooked it in the rush out of there, and never got it back. Mehr

Classic english hotel, beautiful inside and nice rooms

I have stayed at 4 and 5 star hotels in the centre of London which were cheaper and offered better quality. A typical terrace type hotel, very small 'doubele bedorrom scuffed wallpaper, small lift, just generaly a 'tird' hotel.

Room very small. Friendly staff. QUiet and Good access

Cet hotel londonien très British dans sa décoration est très agréable pour un week end dans la capitale. Son emplacement est idéal, situé non loin du métro dans une rue calme.

真的非常不错的酒店，离帝国理工还有几个博物馆很近。重点是！离地铁站超近所以去哪都很方便，附近有很多餐厅咖啡馆还有个邮局，寄明信片什么的都挺方便的。酒店略小，不过非常干净，但是我住的是单人房，较小，洗手间没有暖气，我去的时候还是大冬天，洗澡前要开门十分钟，让房间的暖气跑过去，唯一有点麻烦的就是这个。 另外，可能是英国大多酒店的通病，没有配牙刷牙膏和拖鞋，所以大家出门要记得带~

Kom fram sent på kvelden å fikk et rom i kjelleren. Luktet møgel å føltes fuktigt . Det var vegg til vegg teppe på golvet som ikke føltes reint. Vindu gikk ikke an å opne. Klaget til resepsjon der jeg forstod at de visste om tilstanden på rommet. Fikk byttet til rom i 1 etage som var OK. Fikk en ubehaglig følelse for hele hotellet . Kommer aldri til […] å bo her igjen. Ganska litet och lite slitet hotell. Dock oklanderligt rent och med vänlig och hjälpsam personal. Lugnt område. Gångavstånd till museer och T-bana.

The hotel room was very very small. Not sure I'd stay there again for fear of getting such a small room again. Hotel itself was very nice and staff friendly.

Hotellet ligger i den franske del af London, hvilket betyder, at der er gode små cafeer og restauranter lige om hjørnet. Selve hotellet er som de fleste engelske hoteller - fyldt med tekstiler - men der er pænt og rent. Koncerten med Eric Clapton i Royal Albert Hall var helt fantastisk - fantastisk lyd :-)

Bo ikke her. Det er det værste stedet jeg har bodd på. Har reist mye til London i mine 25år som yrkesaktiv men aldri opplevd maken. Hotellet er lite, rommene er små, badene er ikke eksisterende. Noen rom har kun tilgang via trapp. GRUSOMT.
