W Chicago City Center - Chicago

The hotel is renovated and modern but the corners that were cut were obvious. Loud heating system that clicks through the night. Rooms have outdated floorplans. The service at the front desk and valet was wonderful and the room service food (though slow) was good. There were hairs in both bathrooms, tub was dirty and drain was clogged. The courtyard […] is a joke but the hotel could be a Good value if they could get it a little cleaner. my review really would have a different tone but cleanliness trumps all in my opinion. Mehr

I had a really good experience at the W. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. The concierge made a dinner reservation for us, set us up with their car service and made arrangements for a fresh rose petal heart on the bed before we ever even got there! Negatives would be that there is an extra charge for almost everything including wi-fi which was 14.95 […] a day. No vending machines. Plenty of choices in the room but 5 dollars for a can of soda is a little outrageous. Cracked tile in one spot in the bathroom and the fur throw that was 250 dollars if we wanted had a crusty spot on it. Hmm... Positives outweigh the negatives for sure. I would stay there again. Mehr

Cool hotel and restaurant was great. Only negative was its location, in financial district without a lot of stuff happening at night outside the hotel.

This hotel was more than i expected atmosphere was amazing next time i visit Chicago it will be The W!!!!!

The hotel is very interesting with a modern theme provoking thought and good value for Chicago. Was close enough to the theater district to walk and shop on State Street. All in all a nice visit for an overnight stay.

Staying at the W is like staying a nightclub -- swanky lobby decor, lighting, and music. However, the "wonderful" rooms are small by Chicago standards -- they feel like rooms I'd see in New York given their small size. The neighborhood is okay -- not a lot of trendy night time activities in the Loop, but still nice restaraunts and things to do.

The staff was amazing!!! Best hospitality I have experienced! They charged my phone for me and we're so nice ! Would love to stay again!

Great hotel - great location. Room was a bit small -but was great. Lots of good amenities - Acura ride was a great idea.

Amazing service and hotel chain; the best hotel company in the US bar none. I highly recommend this property; the lake shore location is more fun but this is a better value. Joe

Room was clean and minimally modern. But that what happens when you take an old boutique hotel and remodel without creativity. Staff nice enough. Room service prompt. Convenience of location great. Would I stay again? There are lots of other hotels to explore before I'd consider returning.

A modern, trendy hotel, service oriented. The rooms, however, are quirky, lacking adequate closet spece, few drawers to put things in, no hooks or towel bars in bathroom (ok, there was one hook0.

The location is good for those needing acess downtown. We were not happy with our closet sized room. For a bit more we will stay at the Four Seasons next time. Room service menu was not to our tastes. Overall, only plus was the short walk to our evening festivities.

The W City Center was great. Excellent customer service, nice sized room, convenient location. RIght in the Loop (though the area under the tracks were a tad shady at night and very little was open on the weekend). We were able to walk to Union Station, which was great. They let us check in at 10am, and offered us a late checkout (we had a late afternoon […] flight). LOVED the Acura promotion - they offered free rides locally in brand new Acuras. It was great. They forgot to clean our room, so they offered us a free breakfast. I liked that they continued to check in with us to make sure we were ok. I would stay here again. I would NOT, however, ever stay at the W Lakeshore (in case you needed a comparison). We stayed there earlier that week and the service was horrible. No one was at the front desk to answer the phone, and when someone did answer, they would send the call to voicemail instead of trying to actually help. This happened consistently. The internet was not working for both days, and instead of removing the charge, they added an extra day of internet services (so, for 2 nights, they wanted us to pay for 3). It required a manager's assistance to sort it out because the clerk would not take the charges off the bill. The rooms there are also strangely designed with an internal window between the bathroom and bed area, so there is NO PRIVACY in the bathroom. It was like a drive-thru window. If you must stay at a W in Chicago, try to book at City Center, NOT Lakeshore. Mehr

My daughter lives in New York and I live in Indiana so we chose to meet for a 'girls weekend' in Chicago. We wanted a hotel close to shopping and trains; my daughter works in the arts in NY and highly suggested the W for it's modern features and proximity to everything. The hotel had a sale on room rates which made our stay even more enjoyable. The only complaint we have is about the incessant techno music that blasts all evening and night long in the lobby. In the morning, it is just turned down a bit. Maybe it is typical for W hotels; we don't know. We just know we got VERY tired of it.

I love staying here when I visit Chicago. My only complaint is that we did not have cold water available from the bathroom faucet. Other than that, great hotel in a great location.

I found the W Chicago Center to be one of the finest hotels I have ever visted. The staff was courteous and the decor was upscale and modern in the extreme. Yet, it was quite tastefully done without any sense of pretension. My room was luxurious, but it did not feel overdone. Everything that was needed was offered and available, and I was more comfortable […] at the W than I would have been at one of the older, more established downtown hotels. My bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever had; I had to check to see if it was a memory foam matress, which it wasn't, but it provided the same comfort that I get from my memory foam bed back home. I appreciated the understated lighting and the simple decor of the room. I would not hestitate to come back to the W at any time in the future. Mehr

Very nice room and staff! make sure not to stay in an adjoining room unless you want to hear everythign going on in the next room. Excellent smores cookies in the lobby. Overall a great stay.

The room was extremely small for the expensive price that I paid!!! This was the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed at actually! It didn't even have a closet! I've never seen a hotel room without a closet! I was very disappointed and will never say at a W again.

The location was ok, probably better for business opposed to leisure. The first room they gave us was TINY. I mean tiny as in we couldn't move around the room with two people and one luggage in it. I was not only disappointed but I felt ripped off for the price we paid to stay there. I kindly called down to the front desk and requested to be moved to […] another room and my request was happily accommodated. The next room was much more in line with what I consider W Hotel standards to be. Overall the hotel was ok. The lobby was very nice, the hallways a little old/dingy looking. Most important advice is to make sure you speak up if you are dissatisfied with the size of your room. Mehr

Caveat: I have not stayed in any other hotel in the loop. This room was *tiny.* To walk between the desk chair and the bed, you have to turn sideways (I'm 130 lbs). The room description mentioned "lounge furniture" and an "oversized desk." This lounge furniture is a tiny ottoman, and the desk is only oversized relative to the room--if you were shopping […] at IKEA it would be a "student" desk. The gray astroturf-like carpet in my room was poorly laid down (wrinkles/gaps in corners, etc) and the closet door handle was close to falling off. The decor felt surprisingly cheap. I did enjoy the under-bed LED light strips. There was an extension cord lying on the nightstand for electrical needs (vs. being integrated into the furnishings one way or another). It's an older building, and the hallway and room felt like a layer of ersatz IKEA luxury had been slapped on some tired surfaces. The usual hotel-room bottled water had a placard propped against it that said "Welcome... Warm Wishes." My first thought was that it was complimentary--which seemed unusual, and which really impressed me. But no, it's listed in the prices over in the minibar--it was just intended to look as if it were free. Dodgy. (There's also a surcharge for wireless.) The lobby felt classy in a way the room did not, and the staff were helpful, friendly, and poised. If the stay is intended to be a treat for you, I would strongly recommend spending the extra money to upgrade to something other than the standard room. Mehr

I am still dreaming about those pillows. The rooms are of very elegant, modern design. The beds and pillows are soooo comfortable. The showers are lovely, with plenty of fab Bliss product amenities. My check-in was pleasant and quick. We had lunch at the little bar up front upon checkout and the food and drinks were scrumptious. The only non-stellar […] point of my entire stay was the service at that little bar. Lackluster, inattentive and indifferent. But, again, the food was delightful. Would definitely stay again. Mehr

Good service, room and decor; a bit expensive

The hotel itself is beautiful and very swanky. When I checked in, the clerk smiled and said he was moving me to a quieter room overlooking the courtyard. When I entered the room I was a little surprised at how small the room was. Also the "courtyard" was nothing more than a central location that contained brick and air condition vents. The service […] was not quite what I expected. I had to use the bathroom immediately upon walking in. While I'm in the bathroom, the mini-bar attendant knocks once and then proceeds to enter my hotel room. The housekeep seem to have this same problem too. Lastly, I stayed three nights but only had my room cleaned once. Even after calling to complain. I have a much better experience staying at W Lakeshore. I won't be back here. Mehr

The hotel looks like it was converted from an old apartment building. Which was rather disconcerting and as strange as it sounds, a little creepy. The front desk staff was extremely polite however, I cannot say the same for the bartender nor the concierge. The bathroom is literally the smallest bathroom I have ever seen in a hotel. I had to open the […] door to give myself space to move around, and I am not a big guy. The way the showers are built the shower curtain is useless. So if you don't enjoy mopping up puddles of water with a towel, this is not the place for you. There are hundreds of hotels in Chicago, be wise and choose another hotel. This particular W hotel is not worth the price and you'll be thankful when you choose another hotel. Mehr

My confirmation was for a king size bed and i got a queen size bed. my husband and I were staying there for our anniversary, When I called down to the desk they said I booked threw expedia so I would have to call them, It was 12 midnight by the time we got into our room, so I just left it alone. I was very please by the W in Chicago. Although the bar is not as nice as the one in New Orleans it is still a great place to spend a night. The rooms are very spacious, with a large, well appointed bathroom. I was surprised by the level of service and attention to detail which the hotel staff provided. I stay in hotels on a regular basis and this was the first time I ever had bed bug bites. All over my leg! Horrible experience.

The hotel is amazing the room is comfortable, but the room was a tad small. Overall stay was great though.

The hotel was in a great location for our needs, which included being near Union Station (Amtrak). The clientele was diverse. The lobby has interesting decor, and the room was fine. Only drawbacks were that there is a fairly hefty charge for getting on the internet in the rooms and there is a lot of food displayed in the room (even in the bathroom) […] which is for sale at pretty high price points. My sister and I surprised our mother with a trip to Chicago, and this was a top notch hotel pick! The staff was friendly, the lobby had snacks, and the ambiance was super classy, and they even had a structure with much cheaper parking on the same block! Knowledgable front desk staff - they knew a lot about the area and where to go, and most important, when to go. Room was spacious and clean. Water pressure in the shower was weak.

I do love the W hotels - they're very comfortable, very cool and fun and generally pretty affordable. I often feel they try too hard to be too hip, but that is part of the fun. The W Chicago was in a pretty good location for business and close enough to the El train to get you pretty much wherever you want to go. This hotel was great. Staff was kind and helpful, rooms were clean and fun, location wasn't the greatest but cab fares to anywhere of high importance was cheap. All in all, my wife and I had a great stay.

Staff was exceedingly helpful, especially the concierge service. She spent time with us to find the right activity for everyone in our party. Helped to make this a memerable experience. Basic rooms are VERY small, barely enough room for the king-size bed. Otherwise, rooms were modern and comfortable enough.
