Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa - Windsor

Perfect location for Windsor and Eton and the public rooms are very nice and welcoming. The bedroom left a great deal to be desired. Old drab furniture, an unfixed leak in the corner of our room and rather rudimentary heating. The reception staff were very professional & attentative who were genuinely polite. We stayed in apartment number 105 which was separate to the hotel & adjacent to the street. The room size was quite large but the furniture was a little shabby - the little things make a difference such as only one satchel of coffee & a light on a bedside table not working; […] however the lovely view we had of the castle made up for this. We stayed on a Thursday & slept very comfortably however stays during weekends & peak visiting would mean more noise which would affect a good night’s rest... The bath/shower provided a good water flow & plenty of hot water. The extra amenities included bathrobe, slippers, shaving gear & mouth wash. We chose not to eat at the hotel as the prices are a tad expensive & there are plenty of choices for eating out along the high road. You can have drinks overlooking the river which was a popular choice for a few people as it’s very picturesque. The hotel is next to Eton Bridge that separates Windsor from Eton. It took us less than 10 minutes to walk to Eaton University. The location was perfect for us as it’s by the river, a 5 minute walk from the central train station (the river station is very close) but away from a lot of the touristy spots that are popular with day visitors. An old, old hotel, on the banks of the Thames river. This hotel is several buildings connected together. The view from the restaurant and outdoor patio are beautiful. There are a couple of sitting rooms that are cozy and great for contemplation. The spa...Impeccable! The food in the restaurant is quite good and as Windsor is a tourist town, usually […] very quiet. The room I stayed in was, in usual English fashion, a bit drafty and even with the heater cranked to 28C (82F) it was just comfortable. Still iI'd recommend this hotel as its classic English quirkiness makes it a charmer. If you're American...just know what you're in for in terms of minor inconveniences, get in the spirit and truly enjoy yourself. Mehr

Having stayed in this hotel last year we decided to visit again for a short break over New Year. As soon as we arrived the very professional and helpful receptionist and porter had us checkin in much earlier than advertised. The room was in the non refurbished area of the hotel and work does need to be done to the room however the view of the Thames […] was fantastic and the charm and comfort in the room allowed us to see past this. The young bar team on duty, although busy were again very professional and friendly; even at 2 in the morning. We visited the gym and spa; although there was no pool the experience was fantastic and the quality of the equipment was superb. For location, comfort and personal friendly service in beautiful surroundings I think this hotel would be hard to beat. Mehr

The best hotel for a visit to Windsor - great riverside location, in a beautiful and peaceful spot close to the sights of Eton and Windsor; comfortable, warm well-equipped rooms; very good facilities, especially spa (with good gym and covered, open-air jacuzzi free to guests), bar and restaurant; very helpful, friendly staff; and very reasonable price. […] No other hotel in Windsor offers this combination. There's many pluses to this place... beautiful location, great staff, lovely restaurant. There's also a host of issues.... mainly with the overall condition of the hotel. - there is not 1 floor board in the entire hotel that doesn't creak when you walk over it... or the person in the room above, next too, opposite or underneath you walks around. - […] the tv is a portable, analogue box straight out of the 1980's. 6 channels. It's 2011 !!!! - the car park is small and very expensive. - the floors are uneven and the bathroom facilities are damaged and unrepaired. - there is no central light so the rooms are dimly lit. The place has charactor, but needs a hell of a lot of money spent on it to bring it up to scratch. My advice, look elsewhere.... you'll be able to find better value for money I promise. Mehr

The bathroom was poorly designed with faucets so close to edge of sink it was difficult to wash hands. The shower head was on a flexi hose and thus any pressure shot water over the shower stall and into the bathroom and could not be adjusted. Barely luke warm water for the five days we were there. The only hot water was when you flushed the toilet. […] Suspect someone screwed up the plumbing. On the plus side - nice restaurant and great location. Mehr

Great location, very friendly,excellent restaurant.

The main areas were being refurbished, which we were not aware of when booking. We were given a room 3 floors up, without a lift, and after requesting another room, were given one with fewer stairs to negotiate. The first room had not been refurbished, and frankly was below standard. The second room was better, but the bath was blocked, and the shower […] did not have any hot water! All in all, not really satisfactory. The breakfast was better, after I found a long hair in my melon. Only good news was the location, which could not be altered. Mehr

We enjoyed a 1 night stay in the hotel and found the room very comfortable and had recently been refurbished to some degree. Believe that the hotel is undergoing a makeover due to new owners. The position of the hotel is excellent right on the bank of the Thames and 10 mins from the castle etc. The public areas are very nice and breakfast was very good. […] The only very small negative is the hotel is a little awkward to access by car as Thames St looks like a pedestrian area but the entrance to car park is along this street about 100 yards. Would advice booking a space in advance as not big. We would definately return to the Christopher Wren and have recommended it already. Mehr

A great looking hotel in the centre of Windsor slap bang next to Eton Bridge. The receptionist was very helpful and I was delighted to recieve a free upgrade to an executive room. Until I got in there. It was on the top floor, was boiling hot and the aircon didn't work. No bother, I call maintainence who sort of fix it and a trickle of cool air filters […] out. No bother, I'm out for a few hours anyway. When iI returned late in the evening, the room was pleasantly cool. However, once my head was down and the TV turned off, I realised that the aircon made a distressing growl about every minute or so - all through the night. So the poorest nights sleep EVER (including the seats at airports) and the problem was, reception admiotted they knew about the problem when i checked out the next morning. I suspect my upgrade was due to somebody complaining about it and wanting a different room. Mehr

The location is great, right in the heart of Windsor on the river. However, it did get loud on Saturday night.

Located a short walk from Windsor Castle, the hotel is a great bargain. Parking is available a 3-minute walk away. Visit the Yangze Chinese Restaurant on Thames St just up the street. Both Excellent!!

Originally we were placed in one of the annexe rooms, the walkway to this area was flooded due to heavy rainfall. We asked to move to the main house and a room was found. I am personally not a fan of any annexe room whatever the standard preferring to be undercover whilst walking to the diningroom, bar and lounge. This was a great choice and I would highly recommend this hotel. The location was excellent, and the room was everything I expected. Service, and cleaniness was excellent and the amenities were great. Wished I had stayed longer.

My experience was mixed. I was put into an old English style room that has not been modernized. The room was small. But, the quality of things was generally low. The TV is old and reception was poor with only 5 channels, the lamps were loose and I had to have two replaced as they didn't work, and the room was very short of electrical outlets. You have […] to unplug the TV to use the kettle. The desk was really a makeup table and relatively unusable for doing any work with a laptop. On the other hand, I've heard they have modern, nice rooms - but I sure didn't get it. Also, no elevator and the annoying style of having to go up a floor, then down to small staircases to get to the room - as the buildings are connected but the heights differ. The common area is really nice and the restaurant was also very nice. And, the location is great - right next to the river, the Windsor castle and Eton. Mehr

This is a wonderful hotel directly on the Thames next to the Eton bridge, and a block away from the train station and 2 blocks from Windsor Castle. My room was excellent, with a large bathroom and a view of the river. The breakfast in the restaurant was good and overall I really like this hotel. However, there are some issues with the staff and location. […] Some of the staff members seemed to have difficulty with their English, so it came off as rude at times. There was a young man working in the dinning room who repeatedly sneezed without covering his mouth, then after he finally did cover his mouth he proceeded to place silverware on the tables. Just disgusting. Also, I stayed in The Nook, which is on the train station side of the hotel. There is a nightclub that plays live music until 1:30am. The hotel did not warn me, and so I did not get a lot of sleep. Also, the A/C unit is very hard to manage and the water pressure goes from firehose to babbling brook in seconds. That being said, it is a beautiful hotel in a great location and I would probably stay there again. Mehr

We recently traveled across England and visited many sites, changing hotels often. This was by far the worst of the 5 we stayed in. The rooms are a maze of staircases (up, down, and back up again) away from the small lobby. No elevators. They are difficult to find if unfamiliar with the area as the road they are on becomes a pedestrian bridge a few […] feet away from the front door not allowing a direct detour around to the correct side of the bridge without driving 15 mins out of the way. They list parking available onsite for a fee. However, when we arrived we were unable to park there because it only holds about 15 cars and was already full. We had to park about a 10 min walk away in metered parking that cost twice as much and required us to get up early in the morning to run down and pay again before breakfast. Breakfast was included with the room, however, they had no room in the small restaurant to seat us in the morning due to a wedding the night before. We were told it was too late to have room service deliver it instead as it would have to have been ordered the night before. When we asked about reducing room rate to compensate for unused breakfast credit we were denied. We were also later charged a parking fee and room service fee for services never used that We are having to dispute with our credit card co. Overall, awful experience. Save your money and go somewhere else! Mehr

hotel wonderful

Overall pleasant experience. Nice hotel, great location on the water. Rooms were well kept and comfortable. Bed could have been better...I could feel the bed springs signficantly. A mattress pad would have made a huge difference. Our only other compaint about the hotel was that we could hear lots of noise from the street as people returned home from […] bars. It was a Friday night but we were kept awak from 3 - 4 AM. Mehr

Can't beat the location. Right in the heart of Windsor near the castle, shopping and restaurants. Sits right on the Thames river where you get great views from the patio. Free wireless was great throughout the hotel. That said, this is an old building, so some of the amenities are not perfect because of this. The shower didn't have great water pressure, […] and the hot water took awhile to get hot, but the bathroom was clearly modernized. The TV was small and old, and only gets a couple of channels (would have like more SKY sports or ESPN) and the remote had bad batteries. The room I had was small and on the top floor, which was only an issue because there is no elevator. They did offer to carry my bags up. Bed was comfortable and room was nice. Mehr

We had a delightful night at the Christopher Wren Hotel in Windsor! Bed was great, room was quiet and the management was helpful. We arrived at Heathrow and caught a taxi to Windsor and were gouged by the driver. If you plan to do this, call the hotel and they will send a taxi for you for 20 pounds, instead of the 60 pounds we were charged by the cabbie. […] Our delightful English breakfast was beyond our expections. We watched the geese and swans on the Thames while we enjoyed breakfast. It was so peaceful, especially after the Ukraine River Cruise. How can you not enjoy England? Can hardly wait to come again. Stayed for two nights with partner and we had an amazing time. It's just around the corner from the train station, newsagents, restaurants, the Thames, Windsor Castle....everything is so close. As usual in the UK, as long as you get lovely weather then you have lots of choices and options. The spa was free; we looked around and it looked excellent and […] friendly (shame we didn't have enough time to make use of it). I read previous reviews before going and I agree the shower is no power shower but it is an old building (and I believe it's more economic!) and the air con was a tad noisy, probably for the same reason...I had no problems with it keeping me awake though and neither did my partner! The room we stayed in was extremely comfy and I really didn't want to leave the area to go home! Mehr
