Hill House Inn - Mendocino

Hotel was used in the filming of Murder She Wrote and not sure it has had much updating or maintenance since. Rooms are not well maintained or cleaned. Found lots of dirt. Walls are paper thin as are the floors. Conversations and TV's in adjoining rooms can be heard readily in your room. Heating system is very old and steam, so takes many hours to […] heat up the room and is hard to regulate. So if its cold out ask them to turn up the heat before you arrive. Staff is generally pleasant and its not a bad location. Although its less expensive than others in the area, it still seems expensive for what you get. Mehr

Initially the room had the old furniture, B&B, antique smell. But it went away soon. We were very pleasantly surprised by the experience. The location was very convenient for us; loved the quiet surroundings, the wonderful gardens and the helpful staff. We would have liked more variety in the breakfast selection. But I guess then it would not be a continental […] breakfast. I would highly recommend this place to my friends. Mehr

bathtub plugged broken pipes wife ended up being showered with dirt water, drapes off the wall when you shut them staff freindly but not professional

The location is great, nice walk to town and the staff friendly and helpful. The rooms are a bit dated and ours smelled musty to the point where we though about picking up an air freshener. Breakfast OK. Good value for the price.

Good location. The place had "character". We enjoyed dinner at the Inn's "sister" property.

The location was very beautiful and The room was nice and had an old look and feel to it and we were happy about our choice! The only thing that I can say is that don't go there in winter because the heating system practically was not working. I mean it was not broken but it was an old hot water heating system which was not producing much heat :-)

My fiancee and I always stay in Fort Bragg and stayed in Mendocino for the first time on this occasion. The hotel itself was cute and quaint, but it clearly is aging and maybe needs some updating. The good things were the service, the price, the waffles for breakfast, and I thought the rooms and furniture were cute. The grounds are well kept and I think […] it is in a decent location. Not far to get to anywhere in Mendocino. The bad things were: the bed was NOT comfortable, the rest of the continental breakfast was pretty blah. Old bagels and spread. Plus, there were very few people staying there when we were, so I was baffled as to why they put another couple in the room right next to ours. The only other negative has to do with Mendocino itself. I don't know that I would stay in Mendocino again. If it is your first time in the area, then this may be the perfect, cheaper place to stay in Mendocino. But if you are familiar with the area, I would recommend staying in Fort Bragg. Everything closes up shop in Mendocino early and there are not a lot of places to eat or shop for food later in the evening. I felt like we constantly had to drive back and forth between Mendocino and Fort Bragg in order to get stuff like pizza and fishing gear. Mehr

Hotel is pretty, but not cozy or warm in the sitting areas. Cold fireplaces. Cold breakfast room. No soft music. Only carbs for breakfast besides orange juice and small apples. Extremely irritating waffle-making arrangement: waffle iron beeped loudly like a smoke alarm everytime the waffle needed flipping, which was every few minutes. Hardly a pleasant […] way to start the day. No afternoon tea or coffee or snacks in sitting area. Room was very spacious and warmed nicely. Mattresses were firm. Needed brighter bulbs for reading. Quiet at night. Good location , though would have liked staff to tell us how to walk back to room at night without going on a very narrow, dark road with no shoulder. Very nice experience. We especially enjoyed the fireplace in our room. The staff is warm and courteous.

A quick, easy walk to town, but away from the hubbub. Lovely room, nice ocean view, and nice grounds. I can't wait to return and will recommend the Hill House to friends.

Great hotel staff and location. Nice facilities and exceptional views if willing to hike a bit. Highly recommended.

The Hill House Inn in Mendocino,CA is a good place to stay! The desk and cleaning service is great. We arrived late... almost too late... and were guided to our room by a very nice woman. The inn is pretty conveniently located; just a hop, skip and a jump from downtown. In the office/lobby area we found plenty of literature to get us to great places […] in Mendocino and surrounding towns and parks. Each room at the Hill House is decorated differently. Our room was "dated" but I think that's the theme of the inn. The furniture was a bit worn but we weren't uncomfortable and felt the room was clean. The provided pillows were a 10!! Overall, we were satisfied with our stay and would recommend it to friends; especially friends on a budget. We got a great room for the price in Mendocino in peak season. Our only complaint is the continental breakfast. There was no cereal or oatmeal offered, but if you love waffles and bagels you'll be in heaven! Mehr

The room we stayed in at the Hill House Inn was so beautiful, I had to take a picture! We were greeted by a very nice cat, and the room was very quiet and comfortable, with a very nice continental breakfast served in the morning. I wish we could have stayed longer, since we arrived late, and had trouble finding a place to eat dinner at that hour. (Also […] had to leave before the fog lifted in the morning, so couldn't appreciate the ocean view!) Hope to return another time, when we can better appreciate the beauty of this area. Mehr

The grounds and lobby is beautiful. The rooms are somewhat dated, but clean and comfortable. Staff was very friendly.

The location was beautiful, but when after a long drive, the first thing we learned was that the restaurant was not open as advertised,and our whole plan of the trip had to change. I was traveling with a 10 year old and didnt want to leave the hotel to eat. .The restaurant has been closed for over two years yet they still show it on their web sight

Nice location within walking distance to town. Room was decent with garden view if you like the whole Victorian theme. Breakfast was pretty bare bones. Wifi worked in the room though it was only suppose to be available in the lobby.

The hotel has a great location next to Mendocino's cute downtown area, and though not directly on the water, does have an ocean view. For what we paid and what the surrounding options were, Hill House was a good choice. It definitely has character, although I can't say I'm a huge fan of the floral on floral on floral decor in the rooms -- but I think […] that's just what you get out here and helps add to the "rustic/historic" experience. I wish the beds/pillows would have been more comfortable as well, but all in all had a good one-night stay. Staff was all extremely friendly and helpful as well. Mehr
