"Great suite but noisy outside"
I stayed here the night before my wedding. The suite was great and far nicer than any other in the area. My only complaint was all of the noise outside during the night. Not sure if it was the location of the room (which was on the front of the hotel) or the thin windows on the french doors leading to the balcony but it was extremely noisy until about […] 3am which made it very difficult to sleep. "OK stay not everything I needed"
It was an ok stay. I did not know that valet was a flat rate of $17 a night and I disliked how the AC wouldn't stay on. It was still warm in my room and I had it on the coldest, max air setting. It still wasn't cool enough for me and when the AC turned off it was too silent in my room making it hard for me to fall asleep especially with the noise from […] the other guests running and talking in the hallway. The hotel is older so do not expect the amenities typically expected in a hotel, i.e. bright, spacious bathrooms, with a big walk-in glass shower, (it is a walk-in shower but with frosted glass, older style); the AC is on a delayed automatic whereby it would turn on at the point where it became too warm in the room. The walls are thin because I heard every conversation outside my doorway and I heard the footsteps when people were running or walking down the hallway. Would I stay here again: definitely not! I would have stayed at the Sheraton but they were sold out. The Sheraton is located directly across from the BJCC which is where the event I was going to was being held. In the broad daylight I wouldn't have had a problem walking but single female at night (my event ended after midnight, close to 1 am) I wouldn't have felt comfortable even though my hotel was two blocks away. Please be aware of this! Mehr
"Hampton Inn & Suites-Tutweiler in Birmingham, AL"
I truely enjoyed my stay at the Tutweier Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Birmingham, AL. The staff (including the front desk, housekeeping, valet, etc.) really made me feel welcomed from the time I arrived till my departure. I had the pleasure of dinning in the hotel resturant and the food was wonderful. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous! The beds were […] comfortable and the rooms are a nice size. One of the things I liked was the spacious bathroom. I would definately reccommend this hotel to anyone and I plan on returning for another stay in the near future. Mehr
"The Tutweiler in Birmingham"
The bathtub did not drain well and the electrical outlet in the bathroom did not work.
"Great hotel, check in leaves much to be desired"
This hotel is beautiful, clean and convenient. We rented two suites and it took an hour to get checked into one and 3 hours to get into the other one. No compensation from hotel either. We were there for one night for a concert. Then housekeeping knock at 9 30 wanting to know when we were cking out....really!!!!!!!
"tutwiler hotel"
The hotel and staff were excellent. It is in Mid town so it has that feel.If you need a great place in midtown Birmingham this is it. We didn,t eat dinner there , but from what we heard we made a mistake.
"Busy Weekend"
A really nice historic hotel in the middle of Downtown Birmingham. Hampton did it's usual job hiring really nice folks to work with the guests, the only problem on the weekend that I stayed, there were not enough staff to handle all that was going on. They ran behind on everything, and you could tell that the employees really cared, but they were behind […] the eight ball all weekend. There was a huge concert and the Mercedes Marahon events going on right outside the hotel and the hotel was packed with people who all arrived and left all around the same times. There was no parking to be found in Downtown and so we were forced into valet parking and there were only two guys working that night, they were flat out with tons of folks waiting and cars everywhere in the very small front parking lot. Then one valet had to go and pick someone up at the airport, leaving only one guy to handle the tsunami of incoming guests. It was 5 pm and rooms were not cleaned to check into yet and we had to go to the marathon expo before 6pm so we checked our bags at valet and would pick them up after we returned. We came back around 6 and the room was ready but the bags were not in the bag check room. The front desk clerk was very helpful in looking , but to no avail, then I found them outside pushed off to the side. The one remaining Valet was still moving cars and was very apologetic as he sprinted in an out. So bottom line is that this is very cool hotel to stay at, but avoid super busy weekends. Mehr

Enjoyed staying at the historic Tutwiler. Excellent location in downtown Birmingham. Nice business center on the first floor as well as a superb restaurant, The Century.

"Tutwiler/Hampton"
Sorry - But NOT impressed and would not stay there again. Felt service was less than professional (especially in the lounge area) and the rooms not impressive/comfortable.
Lovely place; no problems at all. Next to a very nice park. Valet parking was a bit pricey, but on-street parking on the surrounding blocks is free after 5.00pm weekdays and all day on weekends.
"Fancy name for plain hotel"
Look, if you want to or need to stay in downtown Birmingham, I guess you could do worse, but the Tutwiler is pretty much just a plain hotel with some nice touches and some major drawbacks. The best feature to me was the 8th floor breakfast area. It is nice and spacious. There's enough variety for 99% of the people to find something they will eat for […] breakfast, including a couple of hot dishes that change daily along with the waffle maker, cereals, oatmeal, pastries, etc. The parking situation is atrocious. We were fortunate enough to be there on the weekend when there were no cars down town and the meters were not being enforced. I can't imagine trying to stay there otherwise. It's nearly criminal to operate a seven floor hotel with about 20 parking places, and then to have those spots available only as valet for a daily cost. Like I said, on the weekend it was not that big of a deal. During the week I can imagine it would be a pain. Speaking of a pain, have I mentioned the bellmen/valet staff? Don't try to park your car near the door to load or unload anything or anyone. If you do, they will practically pull people out of the car, including you (the driver). We were loading things and people into my car to go to a wedding and they must have asked five times in 10 minutes to have they keys. I finally told them to stop asking. There were no other cars trying to get in or out at that time, and if there had been, my car was not blocking anyone. Just be prepared for their unneeded aggression. The room itself was fine but nothing particularly special. The bathroom and shower were OK, although our shower doors leaked a little. Front desk staff was below average. They failed to give us one of the bags of information the bride's family had left for out of towners, and once when I went by there I had to wait about three minutes for someone to show up. All in all, the Tutwiler served its purpose for me because I was attending a wedding about two blocks away from the hot Mehr
"Excellent hotel, some problems with services"
The Tutwiler is great place to stay in Birmingham. It is in the middle of the city and easily accessible to all the major sites and attractions. The problems we encountered, however, were with services. The valet took 30 minutes to get our vehicle from an off-site parking garage, even after we called ahead before checking out. Room service was not very […] good, either. It took 20 minutes of calling the room service number and the front desk to get someone to answer the phone. What was ordered from the menu did not match what was brought to the door (the charge was cheerfully refunded). I highly recommend the hotel for the accommodations and location, just don't have high expectations in the services offered through the hotel. Mehr
"Hampton Inn - Tutwiler -- LOUSY STAFF"
We were told upon check-in that no late check outs would be offered -- no exceptions. We only needed a few minutes the next day, no more than 30 min. as we were running the Birmingham Marathon. The staff was extremely rude and told us we could take a shower at the YMCA the next day. The Guest Services Director, in particular, was extremely rude. Since […] that time, the General Manager has not called us as we were told would happen by Corporate, to discuss our concerns. Instead, the persons that were rude to us have both called us. We assume to try to cover up our complaints. We have stayed at dozens of Hampton Inns and never had this type of experience. We are likely to never stay in a Hampton Inn again -- and definitely wouldn't stay at this Hampton Inn again. We should have stayed at the Sheraton across the street. We were never told during the reservation process that a change in their policy had been implemented for this night only. We were not offered any solutions and again, were told we could shower at the YMCA after spending quite a bit of money on the room. We also have asked for our money back as Hampton Inn has a 100% money back guarantee -- they have not offered our money back. Hotels.com actually was extremely helpful and attempted to resolve the matter. We will continue to use Hotels.com. Mehr
"Hampton-Tutwiler in Birmingham, Alabama"
Staff members were helpful and made sure our every need was met during our December 2010 visit. The elegant hotel is luxuriously appointed, enhanced by numerous historical photos about Birmingham and its people. Centrally located, the hotel is surrounded by points of interest for visitors. Shuttle drivers eagerly accommodate guests who want to do a […] little sightseeing or attend events not within walking distance. The hotel and its staff exemplify the spirit of Southern hospitality. We look forward to our next stay. Mehr
"Hampton Inn Tutwiler"
I was really impressed with this hotel. It was my first time staying at a Hampton Inn and really didn't know what to expect. The staff was very friendly. My room was clean and comfortable and the hotel was centrally located. I will say that the snacks in the snack room are overly priced but overall the hotel stay was really nice and comfortable.

"The Tutwiler in B'ham-excellence right in Downtown"
My husband and I were taking a spur-of-the-moment romantic weekend getaway, complete with a traveling version of a Broadway Musical being performed at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center. The Tutwiler was displayed as being very close to the BJCC, so I asked my friends if they had any experience with this particular hotel. ALL of my friends gave the […] Tutwiler very positive reviews, so we decided to take the plunge and reserve a room. Parking was very crowded, but the valet service took excellent care of us and our vehicle. We had the option of parking in the street around the hotel, but we felt the little extra we had to pay for the safe valet service was VERY worth it! We got there a little before our check-in time, but we were greeted with a smile and immediately given our room keys, along with instructions and directions for many of the hotel services. Our room was fresh-smelling and clean. The bed....oh the bed....no words can accurately describe the bed! It was SO soft and comfortable! The room also had a large desk with comfortable desk chair, free WiFi, and a decent- sized flat screen television. Because we were just spending one day/night there, we decided to just reserve the regular King room. If we were going to stay for more than a night, I would definitely recommend reserving a "suite". The room was a little on the small size, especially for the price, but it was so comfortable, we didn't even care. The bathroom was recently remodeled, but a little small. There was no bathtub, and the shower was a little narrow, however, I am a large person. The biggest problem with the shower was an ill-placed hand rail. The hand rail made maneuvering in the shower difficult. The water pressure was great, and there were plenty of fresh, clean linens. The Tutwiler is right in the middle of Downtown Birmingham. The B'ham Public Library, the Jefferson County Court House and beautiful Linn Park is literally right across the street. A short walk through Linn park, and y Mehr
"Trust Tutwiler for the best stay"
Our stay was excellent from the moment we arrived. Less than 2 blocks from the BJCC which the walk through the park to get to the BJCC was very nice. Also less than a block is a large library to relax in. Excellent location.I recommend this hotel. Historical stay wth a comfortable cost.
"Overall very nice, few shortcomings"
Overall, it was very pleasant experience. However, I had expected a mini-fridge and actual glasses--disappointed to find no fridge and plastic cups. The bed was very comfortable and everything else was very good. The only other, more significant, complaint is that the bar in the restaurant downstairs had stopped serving moments before we walked in and […] the bartender was very rude about it. We had just arrived from the airport having not eaten. Decided to go downstairs for a quick drink and a bite to eat. When we asked for menus, we were flatly told the kitchen was closed. When we asked for peanuts or pretzels (we couldn't get either on the plane!), we were told that this type of establishment hopes to attract customers that would buy food. We responded by pointing out that we had asked for menus from the beginning. I should probably disclose that I have worked in fine dining for a long time and my boyfriend bartended throughout grad school and post doc work. (We both knew what we would have and did offer patrons in our circumstances.) Needless to say, after our single drink each, we tipped her very well and left. By the time we had walked to the nearest other establishments (6-8 blocks) their kitchens had also closed! Mehr
