Phoenix Hotel, a Joie de Vivre Boutique Hotel - San Francisco

Frühstück im Freien bei unter 20 Grad. Keine Auswahl. Verschmutzer Pool, z.B. Zigarettenkippen. Laut während der Nacht (Gespräche im Innenhof, Gitarrespielen im Nebenzimmer)

Wir waren insgesamt 6 Tage im Phoenix Hotel und waren prinzipiell sehr zufrieden. Die Zimmer sind sauber und relativ freundlich eingerichtet. Unser Zimmer hatte sogar einen Heizstrahler, weil es in der Nacht doch recht kalt in SF wird. Das Hotel selbst hat in der Mitte aller Zimmer einen beheizten Pool und einige Sitz- und Liegemöglichkeiten. Das Frühstück […] findet direkt neben dem Pool auf der beheizten Terasse statt und ist ziemlich amerikanisch: Bagels, Streichkäse, Marmelade, Muffins, etc.. Aber nach einem Tag hat man sich auch an das gewöhnt :) Das einzige was man wirklich bemägeln kann ist die Umgebung. Rund ums Hotel sind relativ viele Obdachlose, aber wenn man einen kleinen Umweg in Kauf nimmt (wird einem beim Check-In auch ohne Nachfrage erklärt) ist auch das nicht so schlimm. Allerdings als Frau alleine ohne einen männlichen Begleiter wäre ich wohl nicht so gerne raus gegangen. Die Lage sonst ist eigentlich sehr gut. Man kann ohne weiters zu Fuß mehrere Busstationen erreichen die direkt zum Fishermen's Wharf und zu den Piers führen und mit ein paar Minuten Fußmarsch ist man auch bei den historischen Cable Car Linien. Fazit: Tolles Hotel, sauber Zimmer, freundliches Personal, gute Lage, aber schlechte Gegend Mehr

Das Hotel ist sehr gut, schöne Zimmer, schöner Innenhof mit geheiztem Pool - sehr schönes Ambiente. Gutes Frühstück für amerikanische Verhältnis - Tassen, Gläser, Besteck kein Plastik alles mit Stil, Teilchen wie vom Bäcker sehr schmackhaft. Allerdings ist San Franciso sehr kühl auch im Sommer. Frühstück neben dem Pool unter Heizstrahlern. Die Lage […] ist weniger gut, viele arme Leute und skurile Figuren auf den Straßen, nebenan ist die Ausgabe einer Tafel - das sollte aber kein Hinderungsgrund sein, das Hotel zu buchen. Der Name ist leider kein Programm. Das Hotel schwelgt ein bißchen in Erinnerungen an alte Zeiten. Aus der Asche ist es defenitiv nicht aufgestiegen. Die Einrichtung ist vientnamesisch angehaucht (Das Viertel heißt auch "Little Saigon" ) und sehr nett, die Sauberkeit leider nicht so gut. Als wir den Deckenventilator eingeschaltet haben flogen erst mal […] die Staubflocken durchs Zimmer. Die Sanitäreinrichtungen müßten mal erneuert werden. Im Innenhof gibt es einen Pool und asiatische Sitzgelegenheiten. Außerdem einige Kunstgegenstände. (alles sehr schön). Hier gibt es auch das kontinetale Früstück (auf der beheizbaren Terasse). Es sind anscheinend auch öfter Musikgruppen im Hotel. Als wir ankamen standen auch zwei Tourbusse vor dem Hotel. Der unschöne Teil ist die Lage des Hotels. Man ist zwar nur ein paar Blocks von Union Square, Market und Powell Street entfernt, aber die Gegend ist nicht die beste. Wir wurden von mehreren Leuten darauf hingewiesen und haben es auch selbst festgestellt. Da wir viel mit der Bahn und zu Fuß unterwegs waren, haben wir einen kleinen Umweg in Kauf genommen der durch eine etwas bessere Gegend führte. The front desk staff & security were very nice. The bar restaurant staff seemed annoyed with our asking for their personal recommendations. Not very friendly for a bartender. Food was great, service less than desirable. Pool was literally 85, rooms were freezing. It covered the bases for a one night spur of the moment stay. We give it a 3.5

despite the paper thin walls and construction and rooms getting painting (which ruined vibe for swimming at the pool) it was ok- I'll return just for the bar

This hotel was awesome! the staff was excellent. Stayed here for three nights on an extended weekend getaway with my boyfriend. We were able to check in early, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We forgot a corkscrew and they had one for us immediately out of a drawer full of anything you could possibly need. For me, most inconveniences […] or problems at a hotel can be cancelled out if the staff is amazing... this place has got that! These people were down to earth and efficient, friendly and courteous, funny and helpful. The restaurant Chamber's was also wonderful. Had drinks and appetizers there the first night, but dinner the last night. Great waitstaff, and very knowledgable about their menu. There is a really great feel at this place. It is not your standard hotel and if that's what you're looking for... look elsewhere. The courtyard is open till midnight so there is noise going on later than most hotels. However, the hotel staff do take the midnight noise ordinance very seriously. The neighborhood is not the greatest neighborhood, but I lived in the neighborhood for 5 years so knew what I was getting into and there were no surprises for me. I visited San Fran to see some friends playing at Slims. As others have stated, the neighbourhood isn't the best but the hotel is a little oasis in the rough. The front desk staff was very friendly and called me an hour or so later to make sure the room was to my liking and called a cab for me later that evening. The hotel was just as trendy and cute as I thought it would be. A vacation with the girls would have made my stay here a little bit more fitting. I, however, was in San Fran on business and didn't find total comfort in my hotel room as I had liked. The bar played loud music until midnight.... again if I was with friends on a trip this would have been […] no problem but I had trouble falling asleep since it was right outside my room. The room was a little danky, but I could see what they were trying to achieve. It had been cold that week, and the heater was a little box with an on/off switch in the wall that barely blew out any warm air. The bed was sub-par, but maybe I'm just spoiled by multiple pillows and fluffy comforters. The staff was super friendly and were very accommodating... especially when my hairdryer kicked the bucket that morning. They were at my door with a new one within a minute. The lobby had coffee and these amazing mini muffins which I assumed to come from a local bakery. Trendy and rockstar-esque this hotel was, but I don't think I'll return for another business trip where I need a good nights sleep. Mehr

right by Little Saigon, so great food. Desk personnel very helpful. Not a great area, though the price was ! Pool was great addition and dining on premises wonderful.

This hotel was pretty good, clean and comfy. The area around it, not so much. But what can u expect in downtown San Francisco. But once inside the hotel you almost forgot the surrounding area.

The front desk was very friendly and wonderful for advise for directions or a good meal. The pool is heated and deep which is wonderful kids loved.

We stayed for 3 nights in October and it was perfect. The hotel is a remodelled motel and has a cool feel, the staff were professional and helpful....The room are well done, nothing ostentatious but comfortable. It is close/equidistant to everything in SF and on the edge of the meat-packer district which is like walking through an episode of The Wire....The […] staff are happy to tell you the do's and don't and we didn't feel threatened in fact it added to our SF experience. Theres plenty of parking and breakfast is open-air so when its cold do what we did and take it back to your room for breakfast in bed. We will definitely stay again and you should too. Mehr

The hotel is quit and small, very clean more of an older style. Great location, outdoor grounds, pool Restuarant and bar.

We really enjoyed the uniqueness of the place and the restaurant was outstanding, but we had to get up early the next morning and couldn't sleep because the bar overflowed into the courtyard right outside our door and people partied until midnight. They were so loud and the music was very loud. I called the desk twice and they were polite but said there […] wasn't anything they could do. Really....? Mehr

We spent four days at the Phoenix. The staff was great. The room was clean. We were able to get to where we needed easily. There is a wonderful breakfast restaurant around the corner. The hotel restaurant and bar was very good. Overall, we had a great time!

Awesome environment, great staff, Chambers is cool...just wish there was a private tunnel to drop you on Market because Larkin St is the absolutely scourge of society. Right in front of our hotel, a crack head (I saw this because he was holding a crack pipe) ran up to me and pretended (I think) to have a gun under his shirt, and told me to empty my […] pockets, so he has a new iphone and $18 now. I stayed 3 nights. The first night I was in a room that needed updating. The bathroom needed painting and caulking. The room was just neglected. There were outdoor areas like the stairway which also needed help as they were neglected. However the main court yard was in excellent condition. The next 2 nights we we moved to another room. Well actually […] a suite and it was sweet. I would stay again in the suite but not the first room. The staff were excellent. They helped in every way and made us feel important and welcomed. I felt they made the difference between a so so experience and a great experience. Kudos to the staff. The neighborhood is on the border of not so nice but we didn't have any problems. Mehr

This is a cool place and definitely not the usual hotel. There are lots of Rockers and Euro tourists with kids and the place oozes a great vibe. The patio, bar and pool are all terrific and the only downside is the rooms could use some new carpeting etc, they seem a little worn. The place is bordering the Tenderloin neighborhood and if you go east, […] you will discover the volume of SF's homeless issue. However, in all other directions the walk to transportation is quite safe and easy. Your are only two blocks north of Civic Center and there is a fantastic Farmers Market as well. The hotel offers free parking and continental breakfast and for SF these are real bargains and shouldn't be taken lightly. The staff was fantastic. We would definitely return and have already recommended to some local friends for City overnights. Mehr

We were particularly impressed with the great service we received from the front desk staff. Knowledgeable and always willing to help, they provided us with wonderful insights on the city. The room was well kept and clean. The location was central making it convenient for sightseeing, however the area immediately around the hotel was a little sketchy, […] with numerous street people hanging out on the streets. A cool retro hotel with a great restraunt. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The neighborhood leaves something to be desired. Do not take Eddy to Union Square, filled with druggies and homeless. There were several camped out in front of the hotel, smelled like the monkey house.

The young and energetic team try to do their best with nice decor, pool and murals etc. The noise level from the street at night is phenomenal due to the lack of double-glazed windows and we checked out a day early due to lack of sleep. The surrounding area contains a large number of homeless and others obviously on the margins of society. While we […] had no negative experiences and none seemed likely it was rather unsettling. Pro´s: Well-connected clean hotel with cable car, tourist office, public transportation in walking-distance. Well-educated, competent front desk people giving all kinds of touristical advices when needed. Nice outdoor pool area. Con´s: Not so nice neighborhood, soundproofing of rooms, only outdoor-breakfast facilities (patio heater)

We were very happy with our stay. The hotel's court yard was the best part. It was nice to be able to have breakfast by the pool in surprisingly sunny San Francisco weather! Also FREE PARKING! The surrounding streets was not ideal for my children but you will find that anywhere in a metropolitan area. Public transportation was everywhere. Definitely a different experience but fun. The staff was super friendly and accomodating. The rooms are old but very clean! My only complaint is you can definitely hear a lot of noise at night. Nice retro decor, beds pretty comfy,nice warm pool, lots of cabs around to take you where you want. My only complaint was a loudy dripping faucet in the room upstairs which we could hear, but since we didnt get in til 3:00 am, I didnt call the desk to complain. they were apologetic and said they would look at it when I told them the next day. We had a fantastic stay at the Phoenix Hotel. Although the surrounding area may be a little seedy at night, this hotel is an absolute gem!! The service & facilities were great & free parking was a huge bonus!! We would definitely stay here again!!

I always stay at the Phoenix Hotel in SF for a number of reasons: the location is excellent, the staff always helpful and charming, and the price is reasonable. Phoenix gets my Top Vote!

We all enjoyed the good looking staff and the Hot Chip playing in the lobby. The pool is heated but I was too hung over to get up in time to enjoy it. I would stay there again ;)

This hotel is under construction and renovations. The bathrooms are old and will be great when they are done. However right now and until Sept. they are making big changes. I hope it looks great for them when it is complete. They have a good start. The pool was nice and warm. They are very friendly and helpful.

This little slice of fun and funky isconveniently located downtown but perhaps not so conveniently located in the Tenderloin. It's safe - just offputting. Civic Center area a few blocks away is clean, but yes The Phoenix is grandly surrounded with some salty characters. If you're used to city living, youll be fine. As the front desk said, the bark is […] bigger than its bite. You just ignore the (many) homeless and move on. A zero-one-two block walk to major buses and a 4-5 block to the MUNI/Bart station. Less than mile walk to Union Sq, Market areas. Buses and public transit make it so easy to get everywhere (esp if you have a smartphone. Tells you down the minute when buses are coming.) Very near to some music clubs, theaters and ballet, City Hall, movies, and some good eats in the neighborhood too - lots of pho/vietnamese as this little 2 sq block is known as Little Saigon. Brenda's Soul Food around the corner has amazing breakfast/brunch, Dottie's True Blue Cafe too (and a line to go with it) and Saigon Sandwiches has good bahn mi. Inside, a rock n roll frog greets you in the colorful courtyard. There's a small heated pool, lots of greenery and a new bar and restaurant in progress (they said it would open in April - so expect some construction noise til then. It wasnt too bad all things considered). The motel style layout comes with pros and cons. You walk right outdoors, but then... you walk right outdoors. Not the most soundproof rooms but being a light sleeper I was expecting the worst - wasnt bad at all. They enforce a strict noise rule in the common area and, despite its reputation as The Rock N Roll Hotel, they don't go for loud partying in the rooms. Everyone is very pleasant and helpful. Rooms were clean, bathroom maybe in need of a bit of rehab and maybe some new paint. (I heard some rooms have been done over so maybe they are working their way thru). Awful internet. awful location

The hotel was clean and the staff was pleasant, but the area was very bad. We witnessed a drug deal while we walked home from dinner. Not a place to walk around in the evening and definitely not a safe place.

Before anything, know that I've done EXTENSIVE research into nearby hotels before choosing this one. We chose this hotel because of the distance to the bar we were frequenting that night. Though the Phoenix was in the infamous 'Tenderloin' area, the hotel itself was great. The staff was friendly, looks of the hotel was great (compared to others in the […] area), rooms were spacious, bathrooms were a little small, but clean. The best parts: FREE Parking (a $30 discount for the area), FREE breakfast, and they had a heated pool, which we had the pleasure of enjoying..even though it was cold outside. The worst parts: It;s in the Tenderloin area, but then again, you cannot find a hotel within a 1.4 mile radius that is not either in the TLoin area or in the SoMa area. I was happy to see my car intact in the morning. Checkout was easy. All of us had a pleasant stay here, and have agreed that we will definitely stay at the Phoenix hotel again...if/when we're in the area (which is about once in 6 month). Mehr

I took a taxi back to the hotel each evening, but the rooms were very nice and large and the staff friendly.

If you're a touring band, this is a great hotel for you. If you're travelling for work, stay away from the Phoenix.

Laid back vibe. Staff is generally helpful and friendly. Parking is included. Rooms comfortable. Good choice.
