The Menger is one of those truly unique places, full of history, the bar where T.R. recruited the Rough Riders, perfect location, right next to the Alamo and the Riverwalk. You enjoy the flavor of this historical place, and accept the normal issues you find in an older hotel, like the tiny bathroom and occasional problems with plumbing and heating. […] But I keep coming back every time I'm in San Antonio. I had only one crazy issue - TWICE they tried to charge me $8.00 for a 20 oz bottle of water in the room; they said Housekeeping reported it used. I politely told the desk that I had never opened them, showed them the unopened bottles, and they took it off the bill. (Who would be crazy enough to pay $8.00 for water - that's $51 a gallon!) But I'll still keep coming back to this great hotel! Mehr

The location and everything about the hotel was excellent, we did have a couple issues with needing to get things from housekeeping that never showed up....like replacing glasses used when they cleaned the room...never got new ones so washed out the old ones to reuse. Loved this hotel, very old compared to what we are used to but the history was amazing. we didn't see any ghost which would have been a plus. I would stay here again

Walls in room filthy, carpets worn, shower head at chest level, paint peeling everywhere, bath tub cracked, and rooms TINY. For an anniversary trip, bad call on my part. I realize it is an OLD historic hotel, but OLD does not have to equal DELAPIDATED. Glad it was only for one night. A real disappointment.

After being in dental meetings all day, I was looking foward to a swim and some time in the hot tub. However, when I got there they were ready to close!! Friday night at 9 pm!! Really , they close the pool and tub at 9PM. I was very disappointed. Probably won't return.

Great experience at a historical hotel right next door to the Alamo. This hotel was affordable, convenient, and comfortable. We enjoyed our recent stay at The Menger Hotel - it had everything I look for when visiting a new location. It was clean, comfortable, attractive, and close to so many things. The only negative was minor - there is an odor in the lobby that bothered me. Perhaps it's just the age of the hotel. I will recommend this historic hotel to others.

Great location on the river walk and next to the Alamo and mall , the room was very small and I was not happy that I was told I was getting a king size bed and got a queen instead . Parking is too expensive 30 a night , rooms smelled funny and the hall ways smelled like food all the time .

they force you to use valet parking and its service is terrible. takes 20-30 minutes to get a car, while the actual parking spot not to far to walk... valet personnel is not friendly, acting nothing like service providers.... Location is great, though.

The hotel is beautiful, although some parts are in bad need of renovations, and the staff is great. The price is right and the location is great. If you are put in a room that has an adjoining room (and you don't know who is in that room) move immediately! There are absolutely no noise barriers between these rooms and you will feel like the strangers […] next door are in your room. The other rooms are much more quiet and comfortable. Mehr

Overall it was a complete disaster. Not well dusted, rust all over hinges in bathroom. Bathroom door looked like it was falling apart at the bottom. The pool was not heated the hot tub did not get above 85 degrees. Went for breakfast and the buffet had little left and it was going to be 15 minutes waiting. Complained to the manager and all he said was […] (we never have these complaints). Bar was good but lacked some top shelf stuff. Resturaunt other than brunch was good. Overall a true disappointment. For the amount of money we paid, I was expecting it to be a little more fancier. Bigger beds and nicer amenities. During our stay, around 1:00 a.m., our neighbors got into an argument. I honestly feel like this is the best place to stay in San Antonio. Let me start with the location, you're LITERALLY right next to the Alamo and right behind is the Riverwalk!! I bought this trip for my aunt and uncle. It was their 51st. wedding anniversary. I asked them how they would rate it since I was sent this email. They said it was the trip of a lifetime!!!! I gave them enough cash to do everything they could possibly have time for and they did. The hotel looked like it definitely needed some updating although that is part of the charm. But updating could still be done keeping the old touches. Service was slow our room was not ready at check out time but I am sure that was due to it being Spring break. The history and the location is what is cool about it.

perfect location downtown with personal touch and history. Thanks to other reviews we parked right in the river center next door for 18 dollars per night. We had to leave one night earlier and received a credit for that night. The staff on both ends worked it out, thanks to Hotel.com and the Menger. I would stay there again.

We really enjoyed the history and authenticity of our stay. Beautiful!!! The only issue was the water in shower went from hot to cold without warning....other tan that - it was perfect. Location is IDEAL for river walk play!

the room was not very clean, spots on the carpart, AC did not work very well, very small room, curtains had dust on the tops, the shower water whent hot cold on its on, the bed was as old as the hotel, built in 1859. hard, low to the ground. for the money they want for you to stay it is not worth it.

I'd really wanted to like this hotel. I usually like older hotels that aren't cookie cutter models. But the hotel (or at least my room) needed major refurbishment. The walls were so thin that I heard snoring and bathroom sounds (not just plumbing) from adjacent rooms. The ventilation system wafted cigarette smoke into my room, although the hotel is […] non-smoking (and I suffer from asthma). The coffee maker didn't work. There was only one grounded electrical outlet in the room. The internet kept fading, and was totally out for an entire evening. The bathroom had very little space for makeup and toiletries. And the exercise room had no free weights, and no space to work out had there been free weights. But the location is great, and the hotel is very affordable. Mehr

The old hotel has loads of charm, but is due for renovation. The plumbing my room was in poor condition. It was impossible to control the water temperature in the shower or sink. The room furnishings were not antique, just old. The TV was an older CRT and there was no WIFI. The common areas of the hotel were in wonderful shape. The bar and restaurant […] are worth visting even if you are not staying at the hotel. We were in the oldest section of the hotel and the newer rooms are probably in better shape. Overall it was wonderful. Great view of the Alamo from our room. Sadly we did not see any ghosts, but we tried. We did think the $28 per day (plus tips) for parking was over the top. One should certainly factor that it when pricing the hotel.

Room was tiny but adequate fr a one night stay. Location, location, location! Dinner at the restaurant was very good as well, try the crab cakes. We had a blast, and did I mention the location??

This hotel would have been all 5's except for the fact that you could not control the temp in your room. Our room at one point was 78 F - way too uncomfortable for sleeping. Although there was an climate control fiture on the wall, it did not work and apparently none of them work. (This was the info from the front desk.) The hotel manager had actually […] turned on the heat. We had to sleep with the balcony doors wide open. Should have checked out but prepaid the entire stay. Would not stay again. Mehr
