The location is close to the University of Chicago but the amenities were barely adequate. The air conditioning was not working so we had to keep the windows open much of the 3 day stay. The pull-out sofa bed had springs showing so we needed a roll-away bed for my daughter. The attached restaurant was not worth dining at more than once but take-out […] was available. The shuttle to the campus was OK but only available at certain times of the day. The location was the only plus for this hotel. Mehr

I booked a king and was given a double without comps or apologies. The room was very dated. The sheets and blankets were largely synthetic. The AC/heaters were non-operable.

Great location for visiting University of Chicago / Hyde Park area. Condition of hotel is bad. Hallways had a funny smell, carpet is in desperate need of replacement, and very little in way of usual hotel amenities (plus WiFi signal was so weak I could barely connect). Needs overhaul.

The hotel is very worn....if you can afford a better hotel I would suggest doing so...

We were a little disappointed with our stay but it served its purpose and was decently priced. It's quite old and thankfully looks a little better inside than it does from the outside. The staff was very nice and let us check in early. The room was hot and the A/C didn't work. When we called the front desk we were basically told we were in Chicago now […] and to deal with it. If we want to cool the room down, open the window. We did just that and then were freezing by morning but then the heat wouldn't work so we had to deal with that too. I'm glad our stay was only one night. I would recoomend this hotel mainly due to it's location. Mehr

My husband and I, along with our 2 teenagers stayed for two nights in the middle of week. The staff was friendly and fun. We asked to change our room to one with the view of Lake Michigan. It was no problem. Our beds were very comfortable and the room was clean. The building does need some work. The bathroom ceiling showed the effects of there being […] no exhaust fan and there is a significant crack in the stairwell (we used the stairs because the elevator is slow). The hotel's location was perfect. We were visiting our daughter at The University of Chicago and could get to her dorm by car in just a few minutes. We enjoyed shopping and eating in the neighborhood. And when we wanted to go downtown it took 15-20 minutes. We will definitely stay there again. Mehr

'Lakeside room' had minimal 30 year old air conditioning, depending on windows open for cool air from lake (and 5 lanes of Lake Shore Drive). Lobby looks great Car had 2 lights removed while in hotel parking Restaurant was fair, not busy at all, not greeted Location is good, otherwise not much good to say

I was only here for a short night but the room was very comfortable. I was a lil disappointed the fitness room was not 24 hours so I was unable to use it in the time I had but it looked in good shape. Nice location right on the water, would've liked to walk along the shore.

This hotel looks pretty dated and worn out but the rooms are in better shape than the hallways. Elevator is quirky. They do provide free wi fi even though that is not evident. Location is pretty good for Univ. of Chicago and access to downtown. The restaurant next door has mediocre food but there doesn't seem to be many options close by. and you probably […] don't want to wander to far from this hotel on foot. Mehr

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to The Museum of Science and Industry. They have a shuttle bus whose driver is very friendly and made an extra trip to drive us to the museum. The food at their cafe is great but the prices are not accurate on the menu. The desk hotel staff was very helpful and knowledgable with information regarding the […] city. The only problem I see is that they only provide heat it seems, I could find no AC controls on their dated heating system. It was winter when we were there so we just opened a window because it was warm in the room. I would probably return, just maybe not in the summer. Mehr

The hotel is not new, so if your looking for the Ritz - it ain't going to happen. The rooms are nice, but have that oldish feel to them. Beds were comfy & the baths are nice and clean. Very convenient to downtown without the parking fee issues that you have with downtown hotels. I have to say that the staff was outstanding. We had a room we didn't like. […] The staff gave us keys to view 3 other rooms - lake view, street side and back view. They even put us in a street-side room that had a frig in it without charging us extra. It's the little things like that make the difference between me coming back or not. Mehr

Friendly reception counter, reasonably well maintained building, adequate cleanliness, scope for impovement. Should provide more shuttles (to & fro) to the conference venues. Could facilitate city tour to places of interest for non US guests

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights. Their service to Mccormick place & downtown is very convenient. overall location is also good. They need to improve breakfast quality a little. Rest everything is fine. I'll stay here again i i come to chicago.

I got a nice King size bed and large room. The hotel did not make changes to their shuttle schedule to accomadate my Trade show. And there are not very many Taxis available. But for the price it was a very good deal.

It's got a great location if you're staying in Hyde Park, particularly the north side of Hyde Park. The hotel is fine, the service was very good, the room was fine, the parking was nice. The chain on the door was .... removed and possibly painted over. which wasn't my favorite part, but otherwise fine. Coffee machine in room, which is nice.

Good value for your money if you're only looking for a place to sleep. The front desk staff are nice and accommodating. We stayed in the main building and it is not a good place if you want to sleep-in in the morning. Footsteps from the room above will wake you up. No cancellations makes sense for this dump

We needed early check-in, and the staff was able to accomodate 11:00 a.m. with no problems! Walked to the Metra station and took the short ride downtown for shopping and restaurants on Michigan Ave. Hotel lounge was decent. Staff was very friendly. View of Lake Michigan was beautiful. Not over the top luxury but DEFINITELY worth the money!!

Hotel staff was super accommodating, the surrounding area looked pretty sketchy, but I walked around to find a good place to eat and the surrounding neighborhood felt safe. The only negative was the shuttle to McCormick Place the hotel advertises wasn't running because "there weren't enough people staying at the hotel who wanted it." I went there for […] a conference and was relying on that to get to and from. It was close to the Metra, there is a CTA bus to the EL and taxi's line up outside the hotel. I ended up paying a bit more for transportation, but the free parking easily made up for the inconvenience. Mehr

This hotel needs a complete renovation. I would not stay at this hotel again. There were issues with people knocking on the window to let them in the building, etc. - not even sure if they were guests. Called for security and was given excuses as to why someone would be knocking on the window! Also, no shuttle service to McCormack Place as stated online […] and if you wanted to use the computer, you had to go to the lobby, if you were staying in the motor court buildings. Thrilled to be back in my home town. Ramada is now my sole choice. Location is outstanding. Close to all cultural institutions of importance, but away from the immediate intensity of the City. Ideal if you are on a jaunt for research or business certainly for pleasure too. But ideal for seeing lots of great chicago sites and being in a relaxed environment. […] Superb! Mehr

Simply stated, this place needs to be renovated.

This hotel has only one thing going for it. Great location. I used this hotel only to sleep. The ice machines was not working, The AC unit was not working properly. This hotel is not managed well. It shows in the upkeep of the the hotel. The AC unit look like something out of the 40's. For the price, I expect more and recieve nothing! The hotel is […] worth a flea bag motel. An mediocre place that does the job perfectly if you don't come in with high expectations. We only stayed for a few nights, so it did the job perfectly for a place of only bathing and sleeping. We did not ask for any room services with a short stay. But we ran into no problems with the room and services nonetheless. The hotel services was decent as […] they were generally quite helpful at the front desk when we’re asking for transit directions. Rooms look a bit run down and old, but it looks really good compare to many of the run down motels I have been to. I’ll probably give this a 5-star for “run down” motels. And to me, this hotel doesn't look run down at all in the interior. Location-wise it is pretty far from downtown from typical tourists, but it isn’t a far walk down 2-3 blocks either direction to the nearest bus stops and the Metra station to get downtown, which is probably a 15 minute ride. Surrounding neighborhoods are mainly student housing from Chicago U, though I have been told by many including the hotel staff that it can get pretty bad at night. So cab ride back at night would be the best option. But from what I’ve seen, neighborhood looks ok. It’s near the border of South Chicago. Bottom line, if you have a price limit and do not mind commuting and not picky about appeal, I would recommend this place. But if you’ll be out until pretty late in the night, you’ll probably have to take a taxi back. With the cab fare $15-20 from downtown, I think it might be the same as to looking for a slight pricier, but closer and nicer place near downtown which you won’t have to deal with the cab ride back if you’re out late. The location of the hotel was great. It wasn't to far from downtown Chicago and it was close to most of the museums. As for the hotel itself, I have never stayed in a hotel that had furniture as old as they had. The ice machine was broken on most of the floors. They didn't clean the room one day even after we asked twice, so we had to empty the garbage […] ourselves that day. If you just need a place to sleep at night I it was okay, but that's it!!!!!!!! The hotel was not fancy but it was clean and the staff was very nice. We ate at the restaurant and it was very nice as well.

Easy to get to this hotel, late checkin after Sox game was easy and convenient, Noon checkout was awesome! Staff was great and the room was nice, though it's a little odd there's no vent fan in bathroom..?? Also, even with the restaurant right next door on premises, it would be nice to have at least some meager coffee in the lobby somewhere in the morning.... […] Other than that, totally good deal!! Stayed in hotel for 3 days for family trip. Picked Ramada Lake Shore because other hotels where expensive downtown, plus this had FREE parking!! Free!! This is not a 5 star hotel, This hotel was great to stay if your in Chicago visiting and is right across the street from the lake . It's about 25 min from downtown from the bus stop 2 blocks away (one […] bus all the way into downtown). Area is safe to walk near the hotel. They also provide shuttle buses to and from various locations downtown for free. No need to drive and try to find a place to park downtown and pay $12-$14 hr. Hotel room was good. I just plan to stay there to sleep and shower. Pool was a clean. No free breakfast, but they have a breakfast buffet in the restaurant next door for $8. Try to get that downtown. Hotel staff was friendly. Gave me bus schedules and hints to get to downtown spots. Internet was slow, but didn't go there for internet. Bathroom was newly remoldeled and a/c worked. I would recomend this hotel if your looking for a good price to stay if you visit Chicago. I will recomend this place and will stay there again if I go again, unless it's off season (winter) and get same price downtown with free parking, but doubt about the free parking. Mehr

This hotel is hard to rate. First, it’s grossly overpriced. The hotel is very old and in bad repair. The plaster on the ceiling of my room was falling down, the TV was old and buttons broken, and I was scared of electrocution when plugging anything in the few outlets to be had. With that said, the hotel staff is very polite and the room, while well […] worn, was very clean. I wasn’t spending much time in the room, and was glad because it wasn’t very inviting. If you need a place to stay and there’s nothing else available, stay here, but if you want to enjoy your room at all, find other arrangements. Mehr

The hotel was nice, but wasn't anything extra special. When I talked to the person at hotel.com and made my resvertation, she told me we would have a ref. in our room, but when I asked at the desk they told me it would be an extra $25.00. I was very disapointed. I ended up throwing away some food because of it. There was nothing around the hotel for […] you to do, you had to travel to get anywear. The restaurant was over priced and the food not that great, $20.95 for a lunch/brunch on Sunday. Mehr

We probably got what we paid for given the price of other hotels. Location was quite convenient but the hotel was loud, long into the night with voices and doors slamming. Staff were not very responsive. 3 of us were in our room and we continually had to ask for enough towels, etc... Still, the cost allowed us to stay longer than we might have. This Hotel would get a 5 Star if they just tore it down and rebuilt it. The rooms are VERY Dated. I had to wiggle the light switch a few times to get it to work. The toilet would have been better suited to a public restroom, and the walkway along the pool looks like it's ready to collapse. The Ice machine was located in the main building - and the one […] on the 1st and second floor were not working! Had to go to the restaurant to get ice! With all that said the workers are fantastic, VERY Friendly and you cannot beat the location along Lake Shore. Very close to the Museum and the South Shore Cultural Center. Downtown is a short drive as well. Oh, did I mention FREE PARKING!!!? Which is probably the main reason I chose this place over "nicer" hotels which still wanted to charge you $20-$30 a day to park. The pool was nice, but I did not use it and the Restaurant and lounge also looked very nice, but I did not get a chance to try them out. All in all a good and cheap no thrills place to stay. Our train was late so we didn't arrive in Chicago until 9pm. We ordered room service - the service was excellent, but the rib-eye steaks were the worst that we ever had anywhere. Our first room smelled like cat urine upon entering. The front desk gave us a new room in a separate older building. The second room had been remodeled and was clean and comfortable. I know its Chicago but for the money compared to the other hotels we stayed in during our ten day baseball stadium tour this was the only one I would not go back to.
