The Cal Neva executive level rooms are large and spaciou although somewhat dated. We happened to visit during an unseasonably warm weekend and the air conditioning did not work. Their system is one that when it's cold, it puts out heat, but they had not switched over to air conditioning yet, so it was hot in the rooms. Fortunately the windows did open, […] but it was still quite warm.The hotel is in need of general maintenance/upgrades. Definitely shows its age. Staff were friendly and most helpful. The hotel is old and in need of significant repairs but the stay was very pleasant. With the repairs it needs, it could once again be a very desirable North Shore Lake Tahoe destination. We will definitely stay there again.

The hotel "used" to be the place to go. it has a great location close to small family restaurants. The rooms are a bit dated. No AC on warm spring days so just open the window. It needs a big make over and the staff says it might happen. Can't complain to much for a old hotel.

It's cheap. Then they add the $50 non-refundable "pet deposit". There was no hot water and the front desk didn't really seem interested in correcting the situation. No way we'd ever come back here.

We stayed 4 nights for a ski vacation to Squaw Valley. We arrived midweek during a warmer than average ski season so the place was about dead, especially for it also being a casino, yet classy. I stayed at this hotel two or three times all for skiing. There is a modest size casino area but I see few playing guests. The guest room area was separate from the casino hall. I heard very loud joyful group conversations from nearby rooms that made me worry about noise, but we actually hardly heard it. One hustle was to find AC outlets to charge our cell phones; the room was so old that there are few outlets. The biggest negative point was that the entrance is a bit far from the parking space. Told our room type was unavailable at check in. Rooms are outdated with new paint. No flat screens, no movies to order, no fridge as described in details. Employees are disconnected, defensive and accusational when asked common questions. Unprofessional security aggressively challenged my wife when her phone fell under one of the slot machines. Refused […] to help. 'Casino' is not a casino, but hotel lobby with few slot machines. Bartender is cashier for games so when bar closes at 1030p so do games/slots. Manager we spoke with next morning about problems deflected our concerns. He gave us 4 buy 1 get 1 free drink coupons only. The staff was very nice, friendly and efficient! The view and location worth the trip! Unfortunately the beds were so hard that we could not sleep. They need memory foam toppers to soften the tops. Also we could not see the TV from both beds as the cabinet door would not open all the way due to being next to a dresser that stopped the door so that it […] kept swinging closed again unless you opened the drawer and stuffed in a parka to hold it back enough to keep it open. this is a good stop if you don't want to pay top dollar to ski at Northstar, Squaw, etc. the beds/pillows were very hard and we had no hot water, so we were given another room with very hard beds/pillows and hot water.

We booked this last minute for the presidents weekend, since it was the only hotel with availability. We now know why. Needs a major remodel. Beds were very soft and made you role onto each other. Staff was friendly and location is great.

This hotel's decor is dated and you can see evidence of wear and tear. The main floor is a mini casino (slot machines) and is quite smoky. Our King bed room was spacious, but the furniture was old and the hot water wasn't consistent. The walls were fairly thin and you could hear people walking around the level above. Good if you're just looking for a place to stay for a few nights. The rooms and view were great. The resturant closed early so you had to go into town to get food. And it's not really a "casino" anymore. However, they still allow smoking so be prepared.

The hotel is only 15 minutes from Northstar ski resort, so location was very good. The view from my room on the 5th floor was pretty good. The beds were excellent. The internet was free and fast. Now, the Cal Neva needs a bit of a facelift. But you cannot beat the views from the rooms, the location, the wonderful guest service, not to mention the price! Yes, decor needs updating, but it is comfortable and affordable. The "casino" is just a few slot machines and video blackjack, but you are right next door to two bigger casinos so no big deal! […] You are a tiny walk from fun gambling and shows without your hotel being crowded and noisy! Like many of you, my wife and I looked at the Cal-Neva Resort as a less expensive option to most of the places in the Tahoe area. For us the hotel was a place to sleep and nothing more, so it doesn't need to be top of the line. We're simple travelers with simple needs who take a lot of road trips and tend to stay at reasonably priced, but not totally […] cheap, hotels. The rooms here were kept very clean, and we had a lot of space, even a bathtub. We didn't have a great view, so if you want a good view of the lake from a tall vantage point be sure to specify at when you book. Some people have complained about the smoking in the public areas, but if you've ever stayed at a casino resort you'll be used to it. This wasn't that bad by Nevada standards. Plenty of restaurants were available nearby and the limited interaction we had with the staff (checking in and out) was fine. The heaters did not have thermostat controls, just some basic fan and heat settings, but heaters in mid range motels tend to be pretty basic. The only real issue we had was the lack of a wireless internet signal in our room. We had one, but it was too far away to be useable. Being an older building this doesn't have networking cables built into the rooms or anything like that. I recommend it, but don't expect to get the same results as a place you'd pay twice as much to stay at. Mehr

Too expensive for what we got. Room itself was fine and the view was beautiful but the rest of the hotel felt dark and run down. On top of that, there was a kotton mouth kings concert there that night so the hotel was full of people partying. STAY AWAY! Worst hotel I've ever stayed in! False advertising, they show you a nice remodeled room in the pictures on their website, but the rooms look like they have not been touched since the 1970s. The hotel is run down, the main lobby is a smoke filled casino. The room had carpet that was peeling up, wall paper falling off, and one of the hardest […] beds in the world. This is a nice clean hotel with reasonable amenities that are not fancy but functional. The furnitures are old-style and looks used but is not overtly noticeable. The price is unbeatable and the location right on Lake Tahoe is more than you can ask for.

we needed a place quick that was able to accept dogs. this was really the only one available on the North Shore. place very old and outdated. even though rooms are non-smoking can still smell the smoke in the rooms since it is a casino hotel. We had a room on the 8th floor and it had incredible views to Lake Tahoe. The furnishings were from the 50's, but we liked it's retro feel. The only downside of this place is the walls are paper thin. And we thought there was a casino there, but I guess it was closed some time ago.

There was a gorgeous view of the lake from our 4th floor tower room! The only bad thing about the resort were the beds and pillows. The mattress was comfortable, but quite small for a double or full bed. Since we were on our honeymoon this was a definite drawback. I suggest bringing your own pillows if you're sensitive to pillow heights and softness, etc. Other than that, the hotel was perfectly acceptable. Of course, if you plan to spend all your time out of doors, the hotel doesn't matter much, does it? :) Kings Beach was a VERY close 1-2 min drive from the hotel and Tahoe City is only about 9 miles with a beautiful drive and lots of boardwalk area for walking around and looking at the lake. If you're interested in skiing/snowboarding, The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The food prices within the hotel are a bit exorbitant, but I think that's typical of any hotel. It is an older hotel, so don't expect perfection in terms of maintenance. However, it is an historic hotel and just for funsies I recommend the Sinatra Secret Tunnel Tour for some interesting information on the hotel and its various owners--mob and otherwise. The tour only costs 10$ a person and takes about 1 hour. Overall it was a very pleasant stay and I'd stay there again as long as I brought my pillow with me. Mehr

The room was supposedly the executive class, but was very disappointing. The hotel was aged and needs updating badly. The hot tub was extremely hot with dew drops forming on the ceiling. There were not enough carts to go around for hotel guests, so we had to lug our snowboards and luggage through a tiny elevator. We stayed here for the Xmas weekend. We reserved a premium room with lake view and the hotel upgraded us a suite with great lake view. The staff are friendly. Overall we are fine with our stay. We were expecting an extremely outdated hotel/ammenities after reading some reviews on Expedia/Yelp but was presently surprised. Yes, the hotel itself is outdated but service was great and the room was very clean. A couple downsides - our coffee maker was broken and the spa was closed for construction.
