Again, I've never met a concierge so small-minded about refunds. Totally unclear to me why you can't postpone a booking 1 month in advance, if the house is not even half-full. The staff itself was very friendly and attentive. No deal worse than in a luxery hotel.

The hotel is great location, little noisy at nightime. would not recommend to go here december the staff had many xmas partys to deal with. coild not get a drink at the bar and could not get a coffee, so not happy at he time but just put it down to the time of year.

Massive hotel and very impressive entrance. The place is a maze but that's due to it's VERY interesting history. ALL staff were very helpful and polite. The breakfast was awful and not good value for money so after the first morning ate elsewhere. All the basics were absolutely fine: the hotel staff were all cheery and friendly, the room and the communal areas were all clean, and the bed and pillows were soft and comfortable. We had a fairly quiet, and fairly huge, room, which was just fine. We'd read comments saying the hotel was shabby and dirty - there were some little details in the room […] that were a bit worn (eg little bits of missing grouting in the bathroom), but overall, it was good. The hotel itself is a fascinating conversion of some interesting buildings, with surprises on every corner - mainly, the signage is good, but it does take a while to get from the entrance to most of the rooms. I would define this hotel as being very average. Not a luxery hotel, but not a shabby hotel either. The hotel is good for shorter business trips or if you do not have that much money for your holiday, but for a longer trip, I would personally prefer a hotel with a bit nicer facilities. The hotel was very clean and the breakfast good.

Very convenient location for the station and centre of Manchester. This was the second time we had stayed at the hotel and it was almost as good as the first time. Our room was a little on the cool side this time and we were unfortunate to be there when there was a burst water main in the street. This meant no water in the room in the morning. Room nice but expensive. Did not include breakfast. Receptionist did not point out where the facilities in the hotel were. People in the next room kept trying to open the adjoining door in the bedroom, which thankfully was locked. The way the hotel was layed out anyone off the street could walk in which made me feel vulnerable. The combination of these […] things spoiled my stay. Mehr

Everything I wanted for a peaceful, resting, romantic break with my partner. Luxurious and my best hotel stay in manchester yet. Would definately reccomend the decor, staff and the spacious nature of the room. Also everything with the character and aesthetics was perfect.

Stayed 1 night whilst attending a business function in the hotel. Quick check in despite the fact it was quite busy (lots of staff available). Room was very nice (and large) with all the usual amenities. Would use again

Awful hotel. The rooms were old, dirty and smelly. There was also cold water in the showers.

The stunning entrance reminds you of Roman building and once inside, the ornate tiled pillars and walls hark back to the days when money spent on detail was no option. arrived mid pm on saturday was checked in really quickly. we had a room on the first floor nice size ok for price we paid only problem was we had paid for a room for three and there was only two beds.i rang immediately for a bed and was promised a return call this didnt happen (not a good start) after fifteen mins rang down to reception again who informed […] me it was being dealt with and an extra bed would be supplied while we went out.Arrived back at hotel 7.30pm still no bed rang down again (third time) and bed arrived then within ten mins. Breakfast ok but limited choice and no fried eggs!! would stay again if price was right central to everything.On the whole enjoyed our stay just few issues that could have been resolved quicker Mehr

Great hotel and the comfiest bed ever but the hall ways and corridors could do with a little TLC. I loved the fact they had a sign saying that due to the age of the building the lift was out of order...what a daft excuse.

Great Location, very spacious rooms but very noisy trains at the back, double glazing was not effective, shame breakfast was not included in the price

There are no car parking facilities at the hotel, no pull in to unload suitcases, bags etc., all the roads outside the hotel have double yellow lines, therefore no parking allowed. The car park suggested by the hotel is some distance away down a series of badly lit, shabby back streets. On checking in we were directed to a lift which did not take us […] to the correct part of the building that our room was on. We had to return to the hotel reception, and be redirected to another lift, carrying several bags etc. no help was offered. The room was unbearable hot, and we were unable to adjust the air conditioning. There was no internet connection available in the room, although it was advertised, something that we required. If the room that was allocated to us was unable to provide this service then , this should be stated on booking in. Mehr

Although the Hotel building is impressive,the overall service is a let down. On arrival at 9.45pm I wasn't informed at check-in that bar food service stopped at 10pm so after unpacking my bags I was a little dissapointed to find that I had just missed food servie at the barand I would have to go back to my room to order (the bar staff were unable to […] order on my behalf). After finishing my glass I phoned room service only to be told that all hot food had stopped at 10pm and that they weren't even sure whether I could order sandwiches - I left it with them to find out and call me back. About 15min later, after not receiving a call, I decided to head to Sainsburys across the street to pick somthing up only to find that they closed at 11pm. So, I went back to the hotel and asked reception to help - a ham sandwhich arrived at the room around 20min later and was very nice but it was about 1h30 after I had first tried to order food. In addition it is not clear from the website that car parking is a 10 min walk around the block and not free. Mehr

i have been to the hotel for short stays over the years. i was this time there for 5 nighs, and found the following, there was no towel rail in the bathroom, and the toliet roll holder was loos, so every time it was used, the toiler roll would fall off. i did reprot this on the first day but no action was taken. also on the monday morning, some 1 had […] been sick right outside the main entrance, and this was there all day !!, Mehr

The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the entrance is very impressive. However the rooms seemed a little tired and old fashioned. Convenient location but in need of updating.

What an amazing place! I thoroughly enjoyed my brief stay up in Manchester. Hugely under-rated, it has a fascinating history and the story of the Palace Hotel was enthralling. Its like a labarynth and you can imagine what it was like when Refuge Assurance was in its hey day. I had no idea of the extent of the interesting history and architecture of […] Manchester city centre and the free busses trundling about the place makes it all so accessable. Excellent location with HUGE rooms but the air conditioning didnt work and it was a stuffy weekend in manchester. Need be a deep sleep(which I am) to sleep through the traffic and trains

This hotel is a period piece and is certainly fascinating from an historical point of view--one can imagine the barons of the industrial revolution staying there in luxury. Try to see the room full of safes (for keeping guest trunks?) and the exquisite lobby. The hotel must, however, pay much more attention to deferred maintenance. In our room, the […] bathtub drain contraption had broken--part of an antiquated plumbing arrangement-- but the shower did work. The window hardware was broken and most windows would not open -- problematic because of the hot weather. The windows and hardware desperately need to be cleaned inside and out -- all the soot of the industrial revolution in Manchester remains on those window panes and ledges. The desk staff person was very courteous and allowed us to check in early--we were quite grateful because we'd just come from the US and were exhausted. However, the majority of hotel staff were inaccessible and appeared preoccupied with the various business conferences underway on another floor (perhaps this is the only way the hotel stays in business?) The biggest problem: passenger and freight railroad tracks were right next to the room. Even with earplugs, we heard deafening freight trains running throughout the middle of the night. Perhaps we could have moved rooms, but we were too exhausted to think about this option at the time. Mehr

We were put in this old - not the modern rooms that are shown on the site. The guest service wasn't very friendly. To be fair my husband loved the hotel, and the room - so maybe I am just more picky. He would give it 4-4.5/5, I would give it 3/5

My room was in what is technically the sub basement and was extremely complicated to get to. The room itself was adequately large but dated and with no availability of ventilation. There was a nasty smell of toilets on the route back to reception pas the conferencing area.

We were asked to upgrade as no doubles available at 2.10pm, we did much to our disgust. The room was filthy, very tired and not fitting the executive price tag. Bar staff rude, breakfasts cold. Complaints taken on board by mangement and investigated, we did also get a discount on the rate. I Understand the hotel now have a maintenance and cleaning crew […] booked for next week to deal with issues. Mehr

For the price paid this is one of the better hotels in Manchester and it beats staying in a travel lodge hands down. In addition it's directly opposite the train station. Some of the rooms are a little dated but even these are of an acceptable standard. Very pleased with our stay.

Staff were very helpful and polite, but hotel was tired, dated and not very nice. Room was shabby, bed and furniture was old and bad quality; wouldn’t consider staying there again...

Great entrance and bar facilities very impressive hotel on first visit. However although the rooms are in the main very large and spaciosa lot of rooms need an upgrade. of their facities.Staff very good and we will visit again.

the hotel main room look good and are good but the room i stayed in was very dated and in serious need of work to bring it up to the right standard. the bed was very uncomfortable and all the furniture was really old and in need to replacing. the TV was an old CRT with poor picture quality and very few channels. the bathroom again needs major work, […] i cant believe it still has shower curtain...this is a big no no.... the breakfast (@£15) was really bad, with burnt sausages being served... any greasy spoon would do better. the breakfast room was OK. I have stayed at the Palace Hotel on several occasions and don't tire of it. The grand entrance and spacious reception foyer immediately suggests you are likely to have a pleasantly unique experience, which the various hotel chains often fail to fulfill due to the uniformity of their decor and furnishings. The breakfast is supreme and capable of keeping […] you full for many hours if you are prepared put the work in, i.e. make numerous repeat trips to gather from the wide choice of selections! The location is perfect as all of the essential attractions and entertainments are within walking distance. And best of all the rooms are very affordable. I hope you grow as fond of it as I have. We had a great room, very light and airy. considering the hotel's proximity to Oxford Rd train station (literally over the road, so handy!) there was no disturbance from the railway what so ever. This is a lovely grand hotel in a great location of Manchester, easy to walk to most major sites you would want to get to. This 4 star hotel is just that, has all the amenities you would need, and is very clean. Would highly recommend this to people who don't know where to stay in Manchester, and is very reasonably priced.

A beautiful Building

The building of the hotel is very impressive at a glance, but that is where it ends. Bedroom was big with very high ceilings, could do with a lick of paint. Bathroom very basic, hit or miss if the toilet flushed. Couldnt control the heat or air conditioning. Staff not very friendly. Didnt eat in the hotel so cant comment. If you want a good night sleep […] dont stay at this hotel, the trains seem to run all night and it felt you were standing on the platform. Also there were people still shouting on the streets till after 5.30. Dont know how it has a 4 star rating??? Mehr

We only stayed one night which was just as well as the room was right beside the railway line so combined with the busy Oxford road and the pub across the street, the noise level was high. I asked to change room but the hotel was fully booked due to the Man Utd game on the Saturday. The room was very warm so it was difficult to decide whether to close […] the window and suffer the heat or open it and suffer the noise. There was a Thermostat controlling air conditioning/heat but it did not seem to make a difference which way you turned it - it was hard to tell whether hot or cold air was coming out as the vents are very high up the wall. I had stayed there a few years ago also but was obviously on the other side of the hotel then as I had no similar problem and by and large the hotel is fine with decent service, food and rooms. Just stay away from the rooms near that railway line! Mehr

Staff were exceptionally friendly. Very accomodating even when we asked to print boarding cards for flights and advice about where to go out in the city! Would certainly stay here again.

We arrived very early in the morning from Canada and the hotel staff were very accommodating so we could check in early and sleep during the day. We had tickets to a show at the Palace theatre and it was literally across the road from our hotel! We would stay here again.

grand entrance/reception. the staff and the service i could not fault. the room average size. the great thing bein we had a window that opened which is rare in hotels in manchester these days. we had a great view and although the street below was noisy and busy it didnt disturbe us once the window was shut. the room was clean except for the 2 spiders […] webs that could be seen. i would recommend taking your own toiletries as we only had a small bottle of shampoo provided and one of shower gel. we would stay again. was a very plesant stay and will go back. Only down side the place could use a lick of paint in some areas and more staff on reception.

Spent an excellent time here - large well furnished room with comfortable bed and all hotel staff pleasant and welcoming.

This is a wonderful hotel, which was ideally located for business at one of the Manchester universities. However, there were two false fire alarms -- one at 2:00 a.m. -- which we learned later from hotel staff were the result of guests smoking in their rooms.
