Staff were very helpful and polite, but hotel was tired, dated and not very nice. Room was shabby, bed and furniture was old and bad quality; wouldn’t consider staying there again...

Great entrance and bar facilities very impressive hotel on first visit. However although the rooms are in the main very large and spaciosa lot of rooms need an upgrade. of their facities.Staff very good and we will visit again.

the hotel main room look good and are good but the room i stayed in was very dated and in serious need of work to bring it up to the right standard. the bed was very uncomfortable and all the furniture was really old and in need to replacing. the TV was an old CRT with poor picture quality and very few channels. the bathroom again needs major work, […] i cant believe it still has shower curtain...this is a big no no.... the breakfast (@£15) was really bad, with burnt sausages being served... any greasy spoon would do better. the breakfast room was OK. I have stayed at the Palace Hotel on several occasions and don't tire of it. The grand entrance and spacious reception foyer immediately suggests you are likely to have a pleasantly unique experience, which the various hotel chains often fail to fulfill due to the uniformity of their decor and furnishings. The breakfast is supreme and capable of keeping […] you full for many hours if you are prepared put the work in, i.e. make numerous repeat trips to gather from the wide choice of selections! The location is perfect as all of the essential attractions and entertainments are within walking distance. And best of all the rooms are very affordable. I hope you grow as fond of it as I have. We had a great room, very light and airy. considering the hotel's proximity to Oxford Rd train station (literally over the road, so handy!) there was no disturbance from the railway what so ever. This is a lovely grand hotel in a great location of Manchester, easy to walk to most major sites you would want to get to. This 4 star hotel is just that, has all the amenities you would need, and is very clean. Would highly recommend this to people who don't know where to stay in Manchester, and is very reasonably priced.

A beautiful Building

The building of the hotel is very impressive at a glance, but that is where it ends. Bedroom was big with very high ceilings, could do with a lick of paint. Bathroom very basic, hit or miss if the toilet flushed. Couldnt control the heat or air conditioning. Staff not very friendly. Didnt eat in the hotel so cant comment. If you want a good night sleep […] dont stay at this hotel, the trains seem to run all night and it felt you were standing on the platform. Also there were people still shouting on the streets till after 5.30. Dont know how it has a 4 star rating??? Mehr

We only stayed one night which was just as well as the room was right beside the railway line so combined with the busy Oxford road and the pub across the street, the noise level was high. I asked to change room but the hotel was fully booked due to the Man Utd game on the Saturday. The room was very warm so it was difficult to decide whether to close […] the window and suffer the heat or open it and suffer the noise. There was a Thermostat controlling air conditioning/heat but it did not seem to make a difference which way you turned it - it was hard to tell whether hot or cold air was coming out as the vents are very high up the wall. I had stayed there a few years ago also but was obviously on the other side of the hotel then as I had no similar problem and by and large the hotel is fine with decent service, food and rooms. Just stay away from the rooms near that railway line! Mehr

Staff were exceptionally friendly. Very accomodating even when we asked to print boarding cards for flights and advice about where to go out in the city! Would certainly stay here again.

We arrived very early in the morning from Canada and the hotel staff were very accommodating so we could check in early and sleep during the day. We had tickets to a show at the Palace theatre and it was literally across the road from our hotel! We would stay here again.

grand entrance/reception. the staff and the service i could not fault. the room average size. the great thing bein we had a window that opened which is rare in hotels in manchester these days. we had a great view and although the street below was noisy and busy it didnt disturbe us once the window was shut. the room was clean except for the 2 spiders […] webs that could be seen. i would recommend taking your own toiletries as we only had a small bottle of shampoo provided and one of shower gel. we would stay again. was a very plesant stay and will go back. Only down side the place could use a lick of paint in some areas and more staff on reception.

Spent an excellent time here - large well furnished room with comfortable bed and all hotel staff pleasant and welcoming.

This is a wonderful hotel, which was ideally located for business at one of the Manchester universities. However, there were two false fire alarms -- one at 2:00 a.m. -- which we learned later from hotel staff were the result of guests smoking in their rooms.

On arrival the staff were very courteous and we spent a comfortable night. It's a beautiful hotel and very spacious. The bathroom however, was in poor condition. The beautiful wooden flooring was rotting and the dials on the shower were the wrong way round so instead of hot water, I was not not impressed when I was hit with a shower of cold water. I […] would recommend having breakfast elsewhere as it was very expensive at the hotel. On a positive side, it was ideally in close proximity to Manchester University although if you are visiting the university I would recommend you leave your car in the Euro car park and either take a cab or a bus. The only thing really wrong was the room was cold when we got there but warmed up after putting heating on, no heating in bathroom and it was freezing

Having lived nearby to this hotel as a student, I was looking forward to experiencing it on a recent trip back to Manchester. While the hotel as a whole isn't all bad, there were several points which detracted from the pleasantness of the stay. Firstly, the sound proofing of the room was terrible. This was made very noticeable by the fact that the couple […] next door seemed to be having sex around the clock. Another misfortune was that my partner came down with swine flu whilst we were there. She spent most of the time in bed and wasn't really ready to leave on the day of checkout. We asked if we could extend our stay on the reasonable rate we'd gotten through hotels.com since the circumstances were out of our control. Their response was a flat no with no sympathy whatsoever. In conclusion - very poor service and not particularly nice accommodation either. Pay an extra £10 per night for the Midland instead. Mehr

Aside from the chilly entrance and slightly dirty foyer carpet it is a wonderful hotel to stay in. Old word glamour with a modern twist, attentive service, lovely rooms (esp in the modernised section), gorgeous old architcure.

Having looked for a hotel convenient to the Manchester Academy we decided to splash out and stay at the Palace hotel, the rooms looked comfortable and it was easy to get to from Piccadilly station, close to the shops for a spot of Xmas shopping the following day. It all looked promising when we checked in but after the ride to the 3rd floor in the rickety […] lift our room looked like it didn't belong to the rest of the hotel, leaving the warmth of the main hotel and going into a freezing cold corridor where there were 4 rooms on their own. What a disappointment. the room was dark, not double glazed and the bathroom was too cold for us to even contemplate a shower on one of the coldest November days in nearly 20 years!! The bed was incredibly uncomfortable and to be honest we were wishing we had gone for the holiday inn across the road, at least the rooms would have been in the 21st century. We were hoping for a little bit of luxury but instead were cold and uncomfortable and felt a bit like an afterthought. Mehr

The room 402 was like a sweat box. I tried to open the window and discovered the reason heating was on full, the window had no handle and wouldn't open or close properly leaving a permenant draft / whistle. We got into bed a bit later and we may as well have slept on the railway line, extremely noisery and whistling window didn't help. This is not a four star hotel. The whole place is old and in need of a clean and refurbishment. Check in took a while as the staff member seemed to be having issues with his computer but instead of explaining the delay he just stood there in silence. Very odd guy. Fire alarm went off and it was nearly impossible to find my way out of the building, a […] real hazard. it took me over 10 minutes to find some stairs and I was not alone. In the end it was a false alarm, but what a hassle and bad welcome start. Room was tiny and furniture is cheap. Bed looked very nice and comfy but was really soft and I had back aches all the next day. The building is impressive in size but really is old and outdated. I would not stay here again. Mehr

Here is a very fine period building that has been cheaply fitted out as a hotel. The route to your room is likely to be labyrinthine and is made worse by inconsistent and sometimes non-existent signage. When in your room you may wish to use wi-fi; in my room you could not - reception informed me that the "walls are too thick". I only discovered this […] after it took me 35 minutes to get through to the front desk by phone - and when I did explain this to the receptionist I did not really receive an apology even. It is sad that what could be a marvellous hotel is let down by the shoddy fit out and indifferent staff. If you want a hotel in Manchester in a period building, go to the Abode. Mehr

There is an elevated train that runs across Oxford street hard by the south east corner of the building. During the day it carries a commuter line, but at night they run freight trains on it. And it is very, very loud. Make sure they don't give you a room near that part of the building.

We really enjoyed staying at the Palace Hotel. It was everything we thought it would be. Very convenient location right next to the railroad station. The interior was magnificent and really interesting to explore. The breakfast buffet was excellent, and was located in a lovely grand dining room.

Lovely old hotel, refurbed to nice standered but still keeping all the original bits.....cute!!! We took the upgrade but wished we hadn't bothered, it's so out of the main part, we got lost everytime we left or went to our rooms. Also this part of the hotel is used by air crew with do not disturb sign's out on all the doors. Note shouting out to close […] our doors quietly.....this at 8pm, so we found ourselfs creeping around. Mehr

Stayed at Palace for 1 night on 23rd July 2010. Check in was effecient and welcoming; we were too early for check in but staff offered to store our luggage for the day. Our room was spacious and lovely. Large spotless bathroom. Really comfortable beds. Breakfast excellent. Beautiful old building with a lot of soul.... Best thing about this hotel is […] the staff who were all friendly, helpful, welcoming and simply couldn't do enough for us. Location excellent - 2 minute walk to train station with excellent direct access to Manchester airport. Would definitely stay there again. Mehr

Was presently surprised at the hotel upon arrival.At the rate we paid I was suspicious that it may be a clunker. I was very impressed, location, atmosphere, amenities,excellent value for money. Quirky style and ambiance along with good food and value for money. Needless to say I really enjoyed my stay.

The reception area suggests victorian grandeur. As you go upstairs to room the grandeur fades when you notice the tired carpet, chipped paintwork and broken victorian tiles. Our room {258} was a twin, perfectly comfortable and clean but the noise from the railway track penetrated the double glazing. 4* hotel - not really sure!

After I had booked to stay at The Palace, I read some of the negative reviews about it, but I am delighted to say that I totally disagree with them. The Palace is utterly wonderful, the beautiful Victorian\Edwardian building has been restored and converted very sympathetically and we absolutely loved it. Being an ex-pat Mancunian, it was even more fabulous, […] as this was a building that I passed by on the way to the station almost every day during the 60s, 70s and 80s - never giving it a second glance. The room was extremely comfortable and quiet, I really couldn't fault the experience. I have to mention the staff who were excellent. Will definitely stay there again. Mehr

In such a busy and central location, this hotel is an oasis of calm. The bar and staff are both understated and attentive. Excellent service. We relaxed in the bar in the evening, had a night-cap before bed and enjoyed a lovely breakfast. A truly versatile space. I will DEFINITELY stay here again.

Hotel rooms need alot of money spending on them. Staff arent bothered, and never stay again, Low standards and bad service

It's a grand place but the on-line rooms they assign are awful. Smelly bathroom, you can hear a pin drop in the hallway even though the building is prewar. Trains in the night. Best part was our concierge Joe - he made our stay.

Have stayed at the Palace before and the building is quite amasing. On arrival I was upgraded to the David Livingstone suite so naturally this review will swing more to the postive side. Big bathroom, seperate lounge, lovely bedroom with comfortable bed. The only down side about the suite was it was always a bit chilly. The old windows had been painted […] shut but there were still gaps around the frame that the cool air kept breezing in. I asked for a portable heater which duly arrived. Mehr

The hotel is based on Oxford street, around a ten minute walk from all the main shopping streets. The staff were lovely and friendly. The value fo the room was astounding. Very comfortable. Cannot fault this hotel.

It was truly a pleasure to stay at this wonderful hotel. The history and architecture of the building was something to behold. We enjoyed the comfort of a large room with two double beds, all at a special summer rate that included a full english breakfast. I would not hesitate to book into this hotel on a return visit to Manchester.

this was the perfect place to stay since the event we came to see at the Palace Theatre was right across the street and the Metro stops 1/2 a block away... couldn't be more conveniently located. The rooms were bright and comfortable and the modern bath was lovely. My only complaint is that the restaurant said they were open late but when we tried […] to order food it was impossible to get someone on the phone. It is a small detail but at the time it was frustrating. On another positive note, the staff at the front desk were exceptionally helpful, I lost my camera in a cab there and found out the next morning that the night concierge (I think her name is Sean ?) made calls throughout the night on my behalf... very very nice experience overall and the hotel itself is beautiful. manage to obtain a room at a reasonable price on a late booking. Slight delay when booking in but staff were very polite and apologetic. Room was satisfactory (very high ceiling). The only drawback was the room was of of a corridor with banging doors at both end which was not an aid to a good sleep, with drunken revellers returning at all hours. Very central, and a wonderfully atmospheric hotel with obvious great arcitecture, but still fit for the 21st century. Simply enormous - it's quite a challenge finding your way around. But it was perfect for what we wanted, staying just one night for a gig. Very central, a short walk from picadilly and over the road from Oxford station. The hotel is fantastic, good location, excellent rooms-absolutely lovely decor, great service, hotel facilities are excellent. Its definately the best hotel i have ever stayed in.

Arrived and delightful receptionist gave me an upgraded room. Beautiful foyer, dining area and indeed bedroom, great location if a bit noisy on street below. Seond morning cleaning staff (male) came in at 8.55 a.m. without even knocking when I was in bathroom. Even if there was no 'Do Not Disturb sign they generally knock - bit disconcerting that. […]  Discovered the second night this lovely room was directly over a function room with full-blown disco to contend with, not expected to finish until after midnight. Eventually asked to be moved to a quieter room. Another delightful female receptionist at 10 pm or so was very helpful; moved across to a quieter room with twin beds. TV remote did not work and bedside lights were very weak standard lamp style - main room light not much good either. Bed very hard - put back out reading in bed in the poor light!! Breakfast room madly busy at 10am Sunday morning - ended up going out for breakfast. Limped home!! Mehr

Op zich prima hotel op een goede locatie alleen zorg ervoor dat je geen kamer aan de kant van het treinspoor krijgt. Hier zal je hele nacht last van hebben.
