Clarion Hotel Downtown - Columbia

We had a very nice stay at Clarion Downtown. We were upgraded to a nicer room w/o a charge. That's always a pleasant surprise.

Nice to find free parking in the downtown area. Suite was very nice and quite large. Was very disappointed with the lack of internet in our corner of the hotel. The front desk was less than helpful. We called tech support and they never returned our call.

Staff was really friendly and the hotel provided free rides to the hot spots in the town courtesy of the doorman Lance who was real cool. Spa tub was perfect way to end the night too!

Great location to walk to the University of South Carolina and surrounding area. Lots of restaurants nearby and extremely nice front desk staff. My only complaint is that the free wifi didn't work! The staff didn't seem surprised but was very helpful using their own facilities to download and print what I needed.

I use this hotel for business trips because: It is close to my client (and the Vista) It is conveniently located near (many) restaurants for meals and It is Fairly inexpensive compared to the other chain hotels in the downtown area. If these things are important to you, then I recommend that you chose and stay at this hotel.

Convenient area. For competitive amount charged, room was not that great. I have a feeling the better rooms are behind the main bldg. Water pressure sucked. I did love the 10p-2a breakfast. Bar too expensive so byob. If rates drop about $25 I will stay again. If not, I'll pay the extra $10 and stay at the more popular hotel chain. Liked they hv comedy […] club on site too. Mehr

Javan at the front desk was wonderful. The staff was great! We enjoyed it so much. We were treated very well.

Carion on Gervais St. in columbia just misses being excellent due to poor exterior maintenance. needs paint, clean up and parking lot help. i nearly passed on the reservation but asked for a room key to see room. No problemo, Everything else about the hotel was as expected or better. Nice hotel. everything was nice. Only 2 things to mention however, water pressure in shower was a little low and the hallways were stuffy and hot. I guess they don't heat and cool the hallways.

The staff will tell you it's the same decor in all of the rooms, but it's not. The tower costs more because those rooms are nice and the ones in the courtyard that are not connected to the front desk are a small cut above a shady motel and half of the things in our rooms didn't work. They should be required to list these as 2 different hotel rooms with […] 2 different star levels. If I knew they were going to put us in the courtyard the second time I booked, I would have never booked the rooms a second night. The tower and restaurant were very nice as was the staff. Mehr

Enjoyed my stay. Very comfortable and convient to town. Will stay again.

The floor in the hallway is very dirty with spots and stains. This creates an astmospere of unicleanness. The bathrooms were very clean. Expedia book this as a 3.5 hotel but this is a 2.5

I stayed at this hotel for a weekend vacation and I have to say the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. They made some excellent suggestion for lunch and dinner and called my room to check up on me. They also gave me a late check out knowing that I didn't have to be at the airport until 5pm. Great hotel with reasonable rates, especiallly with nice resteraunt and bar. Ft. Jackson, about 15-20 min. drive. Super breakfast buffet!

Our room had large windows with blinds that did not block out the lighting outside. We tried to hang sheets , towels but everything keep falling. The hotel was booked solid ,no where to move! We would stay here again but not in that room. PLEASE PUT UP DRAPES! They're not that expensive.

Was not impressed at all with the condition of the room. Seemed pretty grimy for what seemed to have so much potential. Bathroom was dirty, tub stained. It really felt as if there was a lack of pride in what could've been an excellent hotel stay. It was a pretty decent location for downtown, but that is about it. The hotel and rooms are somewhat outdated. Location is good; walking distance to USC and bars/restaurants past the Statehouse. Overall not bad. The rooms are unattractive and the fixtures are dated. Cleanliness is adequate. Come here if you're passing through and want to be able to walk to bar/food or campus. Clarion is one of the less expensive downtown […] hotels, but clearly not the nicest. Do not come here if you are getting away with girlfriend/wife or are willing to spend extra for a flat screen and a newer model. It worked for me: a 30 yr old man who wanted to be able to do daily run through USC and walk to bar afterward. Mehr

This is a really comfortable hotel and for the standard of accommodation and location it is excellent value for money. Free parking too which is a bonus as you can leave your car behind and walk to everything you want to do and see. It's about a 20 minute walk to shops, restaurants, historical landmarks, etc. Breakfast is reasonably priced and with […] good choice and service. Would definitely stay there again, and recommend to anyone visiting Columbia. Mehr

I was completely disappointed with this hotel especially considering the price. It was very convenient to USC, which was why we chose this hotel. However, we stayed in the courtyard rooms not attached to the actual hotel. The walls were dirty, the switchplate in the bathroom was old and peeling and their was a questionable stain on the bed linen. I […] would not recommend this hotel as far as the courtyard rooms are concerned. The lobby and restaurant appear to be very, very nice. A shame the room didn't match the lobby. The staff was extremely polite and helpful with a local map. The rooms greatly need some cosmetic updating. Mehr

Far less than satisfactory!! Wife and I decided to have a "parents night out". Spent the extra $ for a jacuzzi suite. 2 person jacuzzi was apparently made for 2 children. Socks and feet were left black from carpets! Toilet stopped working morning of checkout! TV was in sitting room and had to be blaring to be heard in bed. And no complimentary breakfast […] for all that money! Will not return!! Mehr

All I needed was one night; of course that is usually what it takes. My stay at the Clarion was the best ever. I was greeted with a wonderful staff all smiles, helping me find the gym, and turn the sauna on. The comfort of the beds were amazing the best I have ever slept on besides the one at home. Above all my stay was a 12 out of 10 and would highly […] tell others to stay here. Thank you Clarion Columbia for a great stay even for my one night!!!!!!! Mehr

The most comfortable hotel bed I have ever slept in bar none!. I got a great night's sleep. Staff was very accommodating and room was very clean. The only downside: the TV was not very big and it did not have a crisp picture.

The staff were all very friendly, professional and helpful. Thr room was clean, but the comfort level was not great. There was not much lighting and I always felt like the room was in the dark. Also, the second morning of a 3 night, 4 day stay the cable went out and stayed out until late on the last day, in the evening. Almost two full days of no TV. […] Then, the third night my air conditioner went out and at 4 AM I had to move to another room and had to move all my stuff that night. I was told by front desk that I could not leave it in my original room because housekeeping would move it in the moring to lost and found. Are you telling me they copuldn't take care of this for me after all this? This hotel stinks and I would not recommend it to anyone. Mehr

The room were i was located on the 5th floor in the main hotel smelled of mold, or water soaked carpet. I wanted to request another, but we were checked in at 6am instead of 3pm. After a long ride, from Maryland to South Carolina, I could have slept in a barn and been ok!! I felt he did us a favor by the early chec in after explaining our early arrival […] time. He may or may not have took advantage of our situation to give us a bad room only to reserve the good ones later, I'm not sure. I may have seemed a little eager to get a room early for me and my family, which resulted in getting that one. But any way, I suggest that visitors do not stay in the main hotel, but the outside rooms on the grounds. Parking was not very good on the weekend (Packed), 2-5 mile drive for good food. I was very disappointed with my stay, it could have been my fault, being so eager to relax after a long drive, and i felt they got over on me, and I was too tired to notice at the time!!!!!! Mehr

Looking for a last minute place to say, saw the Clarion and thought I remembered it being a good name in hotels. It was not. First, we were given keys to a room that was already occupied by another guest - awkward for us and probably scary for the other guest as we kept trying our keys and the door handle. Once reassigned, we again passed through a […] hallway that was probably close to 90 degrees, and found a large room, with the A/C unit hanging off the wall, no wastebasket in the bathroom, and urine stains from a prior guest still very visible on the toilet. Disgusting! For the price, very VERY disappointing. This is what I'd have expected from a Motel 6! Mehr

I liked the layout. As a walker the location was not great. Even the staff did not recommend walking around the area as it wasn't all that safe.

I thought Clarion was a better hotel than it is today. I basically stayed in a motel 6 and paid for Clarion quality. Not good.

Room did not have a frig. or microwave. Customer service was sicking Room not worth the price not even close. STAY AWAY!!! TRUST ME.

I've stayed at this property a few times in both the tower and outside properties. The tower rooms are perfectly fine, comfortable and clean. The outside properties look to be old nearby motels acquired by Clarion and refurbished. The entrances are outside and it doesn't feel safe, plus the heating and A/C do not handle the larger refurbished, oddly […] laid out rooms. So, tower rooms - absolutely. Outside properties - don't go there. Mehr

On Thurs, 2-17-11 we reserved a room with a king size bed & a flat screen TV, when we checked in we were given a room with king bed, no flat screen tv & we were stuck in a corner room. They eventually after many calls to front desk got us another room without flat screen, this was not what we reserved, I will never stay there again.

I have stayed at this Clarion location before in the main building and was very satisfied with the room and the price. During this trip, I was placed into their second detached facility behind the main building. This facility looks like an old renovated two story motel with an outside entrance into each room. I was given a 'suite' that was two rooms […] made into one. It was spacious and included a kitchenette, but had issues. The floor areas between the sections were of different levels. The two previous bathroom areas were combined, making it seem cave-like and far removed from the entrance door. If you like listening to the TV while in the bathroom, you're out of luck. The worst part of this 'suite' was the heating, which was located underneath the window next to the entrance door. The heating unit wasn't sufficient to heat the entire double space and the large bathroom. I left the heat on high all night long and it never truly got warm in the room and bathroom. I tried sleeping in a sweatshirt to stay warm. The hotel was very full so staying in the main building wasn't an option. I would not stay here again IF relegated to the detached motel unit, but would be happy in the main building. Mehr
