The Lancaster Hotel - Houston

My room was spacious with a sitting area and desk and the service from all the hotel staff was top notch. I had3 break fasts and 2 dinners at the hotel and the food was delicious. I really like the photos from the 1940's and 50's that line the walls downstairs, I look forward to staying here on my next trip to Houston. They staff was really helpful.. They allowed me to check in early, and quickly brought my car and fresh linens when I requested them. The inclusive breakfast was great. I would stay there again.

We really enjoyed our stay. The room was very nice, clean, bright. The bed was very nice, as were the pillows and bedspread, etc. The people were nice and we enjoyed the bar downstairs. The location downtown is superb. Across from Jones Hall and the Alley Theatre, just two blocks away from the Opera theatre, etc. A very nice, historical hotel with all […] the charm one would expect. Great location for attending the Houston Symphony. We had hoped to have an evening snack after the performance and we had been told at the time of check in that the restaurant would be open until 11 PM. However upon return from the concert the restaurant was closed and the front desk told us that it had not had enough business to warrant staying open. […] When asked about alternatives the front desk was distinctly not helpful and seemed defensive. It took a good deal of effort to find out what little was available in the hotel. It was unfortunate that this episode colored the stay which was other wise fine. Mehr

I live about 30 minutes from Houston and had never stayed at this hotel.Due location of the event my husband and I was going to we decided to make it an overnight stay.I did not book this hotel until two days before our stay.Everything was good.The room is not very large but for the money, location, and short notice this hotel was to good to be true. […] The hotel is an older hotel but well kept. We were planning a college visit to Rice University so I got on Hotels.com and found the Lancaster Hotel. Its less than 5 miles from the college and I was attracted to it because its historic and also located in the Downtown Houston Theater district. Plus breakfast was included. The hotel was very easy to get to from the interstate; we found it immediately. […] Staff was very friendly and helpful when asked for dining locations for the evening. Its just a short walk over to Bayou Place where there are several restaurants as well as the Hard Rock Cafe Houston. The hotel has a beautiful lobby. The room was gorgeous and very relaxing; usually I hate hotel beds but this one was VERY comfortable - even better than the HEAVENLY BED! There were no issues using the breakfast voucher in the bistro - we did have to pay tax + gratituty which was expected. The only downside is that valet parking was more than I was expecting but then in retro-spect it was downtown so probably in the norm with other hotels in the area. I dont know if there was any alternative but to use the valet; u might so inquire. I would definitely stay at this hotel again. Mehr

Good location if you have something to do in the theatre district. Tiny tiny room, but still nice. Didn't love the $30 a night parking charge. They have a coupon on their website for $10, but only if you book thru them.

everything fine till we went to load our car upon check-out and valet informed us that they didn't have our keys. Turns out, the guy who parked it the night before at around 10:30 didn't leave the keys - took them home with him! Luckily, we had a spare electronic key with us for our new car. The valet called as we were driving out of town and said he […] would drive to our home (3 hours away) and deliver them personally. I told him to just mail it carefully packaged and able to be tracked. He did - we got it in 3 days. Just don't know how it got in his car? I'm sure the valet are contract companies not owned by the hotel. I'm not happy about it, but I did not complain to the hotel. We didn't even get all mad with valet as they apologized and we had the other key to leave with. I did wait around my house all day Monday, the day it was supposed to arrive as i figured i had to sign for it. Turns out, I did not. Mehr

For the age of the building it is in very good condition. For me, the rooms were a bit to small. The employes were great. It's close to the downtown area.

Hotel was clean, however the rooms were very small, bathroom was cramped. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful.

We love the location of this hotel. The decor is wonderful except when they set up extra dining tables in the lobby. The rooms were nice, the beds were GREAT! The staff was outstanding. The restaurant is too expensive for us but there are several other restaurants within walking distance. It is literally a cross-walk away from the symphony, the ballet […] or the theater. We take a cab from Houston-Hobby and come in for the symphony. The location couldn't be better and they frequently offer specials that are cheaper than Hotels.com. . .just talk to the fabulous staff. Missed my flight out of Houston and was stuck for the night. Found a deal online and decided to stay here for the night. Not the biggest or fanciest place, but very clean, friendly service (especially the valets and bellhops), and comfortable rooms. The bed ensured a great nights sleep and checkout was easy. Can't write a whole lot more about the restaurant […] (Bistro), etc because I simply wasn't there long enough. My only complaint was the cost of valet parking. Street parking that doesn't require you to get up at the crack of dawn and feed the meter was woefully inadequate, so the only other option is a $30 valet. Seemed steep for Houston, but what do I know? Mehr

Hotel was old but nice, located near to attractions.

We love staying at the Lancaster. Since our son moved to Houston 2 years ago, we've stayed there every time we've visited. The lobby has old world charm, the rooms are quiet and very comfortable. Beds and linens are great. Free shuttle within 3 miles of the hotel, which includes everywhere you would want to be near downtown. Great location near downtown […] bars & restaurants, theaters and music venues and the Bayou trail. Highly recommended. Mehr

Lovely visit to downtown Houston, starting with ck in to the lovely Lancaster, I arrived before ck in, but was accommodated with valet and bag ck as I waited for friends in the spacious and quaint lobby. Rooms also spacious and comfortable, and transport to and from any show or resturant downtown, WOW! Loved my visit

great Valet staff and the shuttle service was just amazing.

Quaint, intimate, cozy, charming, historical and just a different experience than most hotels. A friendly staff and good service. We had an enjoyable weekend and will certainly stay there again in the future; two thumbs up!

Right in Theater District. Ordered a Q Deluxe, got a Full. Breakfast is included, but the same each day. Could use a bit of updating. Staff wonderful, restuarant elegant. Room service pricy. Near Downtow Aquarium, Macys and multiple theaters and restaurants.

Although the decor is a bit outdated the hotel has an old world charm. The room was clean and just enough amenities to satisfy my need without any excess. For that price it cannot be beat.

I checked in on Labor Day, and no room service and no in room internet. Had I known this, I would have sought another hotel. Overall, the place was otherwise very nice. Great service, save for the aforementioned bumps.

The Lancaster is a nice, older property in a great location. The staff is professional and has done a nice job of trying to maintain this boutique on what seem to be limited resources. With some much needed updates, this hotel could be restored to its former luxury.

An excellent hotel. The management clearly took older posts/reviews to heart and addressed each one. Brand new flat screen TV, a mini-Zagat's list of local restaurants prepared by one of their employees, an awesome complimentary breakfast with each night...wonderful! This hotel should not be considered in the same category as a W hotel...this is a historic […] site, with period-appropriate decor, and should be considered in the same category as the Driskill in Austin or Union Station in Nashville. Everyone was super, super nice--I felt like royalty after a long interview day at the medical center (a $15 cab ride each way...totally worth the distance bc the Lancaster was so much less expensive than the TMC area hotels) and two valets opened the front doors for me. I would stay here again in a heartbeat--absolutely lovely. I didn't take advantage of the location (didn't have time), but the area seems to have a lot of culture and entertainment right around the hotel. Don't miss out on this place because of previous reviews by nattering nabobs of negativity. The room was clean, comfy bed, beautiful marble bathroom...all the basics, plus a big dose of charm. Mehr

We had never visited the Lancaster Hotel until June 11. We came down to celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary, taking in a play at the Alley and a ballet at the Wortham. We have series tickets at the Houston Symphony and have often looked across Texas Avenue at the Lancaster. We're glad we came at last. The meals were superb. We plan to return in the […] autumn. I love this hotel. It's a little older but very well kept. If you want cool and hip, stay at a W. But if you want elegant and traditional and like the performing arts, stay here! It's a block or so from the theater and the symphony hall! The staff was very friendly and accomodating. Their shuttle service was great -- took me to work everyday and picked […] me up (all I had to do was call and give them the address where to pick me up!) Finally, the great deal I got form Hotels.com was pure gravy on top of a great experience! I'm definitely booking my next stay at the Lancaster through Hotels.com! Thanks! Mehr

Lancaster is conveniently located to main street and the metro rail. Easily withing walking distance to Main street and directly across the street from Bayou place, aquarium and theaters. The street noise is not good if you are a light sleeper. Request a room that will stifle this as much as possible. Old hotel, a little more charm than the regular […] chains. Valet is expensive. The Lancaster Hotel in Houston-close to theaters-especially Jones Hall and Alley. Staff was very friendly and helpful with ideas of where to eat. Offered shuttle service to and back from the Hobby Center. Will certainly stay here the next time I go to a play.

Wonderful old hotel in downtown Houston just across the street from the Alley Theater. Great restaurant, excellent staff, wonderful atmosphere. Bathrooms need some updating, but nothing significant enough to alter my excellent rating of this hotel.

Just a few block from all the downtown Houston theaters. Hotel is older - uses real keys for the doors - but in great shape. Valet parking is mandatory. I had free parking pass so don't know what the real cost is or if it includes in and out privs.

Excellent conditions except the pricy bascket (2$ cola?)

Good location but parking may be a challenge unless you want to pay the expense of valet every night for $30. Upon check-in, the front desk put me in a Queen room when I paid for a Delux King. After calling down to the front desk I was 'reluctantly' moved - I sensed a little bit of an "attitude" from the front desk clerk. So make sure you're put in […] the room you pay for. After that, the rest of the stay was very pleasant. The room was spacious, well kept, a good view, and the service was semi-prompt. The total cost was actually less than what I originally booked the room for (I'm not sure if this was the result of the room mix-up but I was pleased). I'd stay at this hotel again! Mehr
