Handlery Hotel - San Diego

Pleasant surprise for the price. Room was pretty good, above average bed and sheets. The hot tub was clean and hot. The staff could not have been nicer. They go out of their way to help you. The breakfast place is also good, well above average food and very nice service.

For the (high) price, this hotel is not desirable. The hotel's general cleanliness is sub-par and the service sucks. There are many better options in San Diego, especially with the related pricing.

Great place. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Had dinner at Hotel Restaurant, very good meal and very reasonable prices. The trolley within walking distant.

Stayed at the Handlery Hotel in November, 2011. Rooms were clean and bedding and bed soft and comfortable. Nice pool with both shallow and deep end with rope in between. Enjoyed the hot tub too. The plumbing was not so great. The sink and toilet both had issues needing repair however they were quick to send a man to fix them. Nice staff. Good location […] next to a major mall and shopping. Bathroom was clean although there was 2 long black hairs on counter & on tank of toliet & refrigator did not work well.

The room was tiny for a family of four, 2 adults 2 kids. The beds were small doubles, each of which were pressed against at least one wall of the room and then the wall where the TV is was so close to the beds it felt like the walls were closing in. the mini refrigerator in the room was tiny and enclosed inside a cabinet with no ventilation so the first […] time we opened the cabinet it felt like a 100 degrees. It is a fire hazard and we ended up unplugging it. Very over priced for being one step up from a Motel 6 or Super 8. Its an old motel that has been giving a new name and a low cost make over so at first glance it looks up-scale and nice, but it really is not. They charge for wi-fi and parking (Self parking lot with a toll booth, not even a secured lot or patrolled by security), to me that is no way to treat a paying guest. We ordered room service, was treated rudely, they delivered our food to the wrong room - twice! Left out part of our order and gave us orange juice that tasted spiked with alcohol or cleaning fluid. When we relayed the issues with the first order, the woman who answered our call for room service both times actually argued with us and was extremely rude, […] did not offer to compensate us for cold food that had originally gone to the wrong room or for missing toast and bad OJ. Will never go back or recommend and my son is a Marine stationed in San Diego so we will be booking our visits and a different hotel. Mehr

Rooms are clean . Lots of pillows,comfy bed and good TV.Veiw of the 12 dollar a night parking lot.Nice pool and bar area.

This hotel has conventions and we were present for the square dancers; had to listen to square dancing music for one and half hours while they danced in the shallow end of the pool. To be honest, I had higher expectation on this hotel! We booked when there was discount on the room, and I would never pay the full price. The hotel is alright and the staff is friendly, (besides one of the weiters) but I think that you could find a better place to stay for the same amount of money. The hotel was convienently located close to SeaWorld so that was ok. These hotels in Hotel circle including the Handlery needs to be updated. They are really way behind the times. The only 2 things that I didn't care for were 1) they charged us $12 for parking. 2) The hotel allows any outsiders to enjoy the pool area, I know they are trying to make […] a little more $$ but at the expense of their hotel guests. The hotel stay was good, I mean, I would not call it a "resort", as the swimming pool was smaller than the one we have in our condominium, and the room were the standard room of a "remodeled motel", but overall was pleasant, the choice of furniture really modern and european. the only upsetting situation came about at time or check in, as we had requested […] a King size bedroom, and we ended up with a 2 queens... Our total stay was 2 nights, so we had to move the next night to the King size... but it was not their fault... next time I would make reservation directly with the hotel... Mehr

My daughter and I had a great time here. It was close to Old Town, the Fashion District and trolleys that took us everywhere else. The fitness center was also convenient and clean. We will definitely come back for another visit!

My family and I went to SeaWorld for the day and needed a place to stay so we could go to the beach the next day. If you're looking for a cheap stay the Handlery is perfect. If you're looking for something more don't bother. There are a lot nicer hotels and areas to stay in when visiting San Diego. There is nothing around in walking distance. Especially […] food. Well-kept property. The pool area with bar and food service was relaxing and convenient--appealing to families. It looks like it has had a recent upgrade with newer carpet & decor --overall, pretty nice and decent price. Accommodating when we needed to add a night to our stay, even though it appeared to be a busy Comic-Con weekend.

The hotels amenities included two of my favorites; a fitness room and an outdoor pool. It was close to the San Diego Zoo (not within walking distance but a van served as the hotel shuttle). Doesn't have elevators. In room internet is available but at an additional fee. Complimentary breakfast for 2 (included FRESH FRUIT, yogurt, hot bagels and a variety […] of beverages). Very convenient to UCSD hospital. The only minor problem was the next door room was a little loud during the evening hours, fortunately for us not at sleep time. We could hear the TV next door (not enough sound proofing insulation between the rooms).

My room was quite quiet for the night's sleep my two nights (Mon-Tue) - no freeway or parking lot noise - but the walls /doorway allowed just a bit of noise - wondered if it would have been worse had I been less lucky with 'neighbors' I had...? Everything else for the stay at this hotel was great, for a great price!

Don't let first impressions scare you. While the hotel is not brand new, it is safe, clean, with lots of hot water and is extremely convenient to I-8 (which takes you all around the area) and the trolley transit station (the hotel shuttle will take you there or you can walk in 10 minutes). The pool area is a great place to hang out and there are activities such as free poolside movies, and entertainment scheduled. Food in the hotel restaurant or at the bars was reasonable and very good. We ate all our breakfasts at the hotel, and they were excellent and sufficient to last through the day. The hotel offers a free shuttle to Sea World, Balboa Park, The Zoo and local malls. All you have to do is sign up on the schedule at the concierge. We stayed at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina for the first part of our trip and moved to the Handlery after our convention ended. While it lacks the Gleaming High-rise look and the Bay views, it makes up for it in great service and friendly staff. We thoroughly enjoyed out stay and would stay again when we are in the area. The hotel is in a great location for getting on the freeways to go to the beach, the city, Quualcom Stadium and all top attractions. Plus it is also close to Fashion Valley mall which has lots of shops and restaurants, all within walking distance or a short drive without getting on the freeway. Not a great business traveler hotel as though. Wireless […] was $10 a day and I couldn't get on. If you go to the business center, it was $3 for initial internet access and then either $.50 or $1 each additional minute, but they don't tell you how many minutes the $3 covers so who knows how much it would come out to. If you want to print it was anywhere from $.50 to $1.50 per page. Overall the hotel is great and would definitely stay there for a relaxing getaway but probably not for work again. Mehr

This Hotel was nice. I have nothing explicitly bad to say about it. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, everything worked, and the staff was very friendly. The only things that irked me a little was the fact that internet is not free and you must pay for parking. I have no real complaints, Hotel Circle is close to a pretty nice mall called […] Fashion Valley, but it is about 10-15 minutes from Downtown San Diego and fun places like Old Town, Gas Lamp, and Seaport Village. What I didn't like was the bed.....it was mushy and slanted. My husband kept sliding to the edge, sucked. The walls are paper thin and the rooms are so small that other people were gathering in the hallway to get together. The bathroom was so tiny, I don't think a large person could sit on the comode in comfort. And the water pressure was waaaay to […] low. They didn't give the code for internet, had to call them. They didn't give the free bf coupons, that's ok though, we figured the food wasn't gonna be that great anyway. And why is parking so expensive? You have to park there if you have a vehicle! Mehr

The hotel lobby was pretty and the staff very friendly, but the hotel was a bit off the beaten path for the price. It was situated along Hotel Circle, right off the freeway, not within walking distance of anything you would want to see. The free shuttle to Sea World was not useful because their last trip back to the hotel was at 4:30 (we didn't arrive […] until noon), so we had to pay for parking twice (part of the reason I picked this place was the idea that we wouldn't need to pay for parking at Sea World). The room was VERY small and the natural light was blocked by a huge fence and the heating/cooling system machinery. The "free" breakfast we were promised turned out to be the same continental stuff that everyone else was enjoying (a muffin and a cup of coffee). Hotels in Old Town were going for about the same price that evening (and there IS cool stuff to walk to in that neighborhood). I wish we had chosen one of them. Mehr

Nice hotel, free wifi is very much appreciated and should be more common in hotels these days. Decent sized pool and the free breakfast is very good. The decor is kind of old but the room is spotless and well-maintained.

Great Hotel, only stayed a couple of nights but it was comfortable and had everything we needed. Only thing I would mark down was the bar was expensive and the atmosphere was dead.

My wife and I stayed for three wonderful days at the Handlery in San Diego, it was very clean and quiet. The Front desk clerks were very friendly and professional as well as informative of the San Diego area and sites. The food was also great, I would definitely stay here again !

We had a few rooms booked for my relatives. The services of the staff were fantastic, although the hotel was too old to have functioning conditions. The drainage and the plumbing were problems in all our rooms and we had to call for service a few times. The rooms were really small. The pool and hot tub were good. i had stayed in the hotel one night.after i got there with two kids (4&5yrs old) at 7m, the room was not ready,we had to wait 3 hour and i had been told that to wait in cafteria eating my dinner by my expense!! r u kidding me? i know what to do! do i have to pay more money for their mistake which they made!!it was a disaster!!! please custemer first […] and money next!!!!! Very nice price, the quality of the room was higher than the price paid, always a bonus. Very nice staff and the restaurant was excellent. I will stay again

This hotel looks nothing like the photos listed. The rooms are dark and grungy. Also, it is only yards from a busy freeway so the neighborhood and noise level was not as expected. Finally, there is a van service offered but by the time we arrived, they were booked for the following day!!! We canceled our last two days and drove back to Los Angeles.

The location is excellent and the facility is nice except under some construction in the parking area.

Called 5 Star, late, made the reservation, 20 minutes later I pulled in NO PROBLEMS. Thanks 5 Star.

Old hotel needing renovation.....still charges for Internet access and is stingy with their continental breakfast!

We went on a trip to San Diego for Spring Break. The hotel was just what we needed for the trip. Just a place to sleep. Luckily for us we had a busy trip planned because I would not have wanted to stay in the room for very long. The bar in Postcards had good service and great martinis. The walls of the rooms are very thin, way to go room 333! They do […] have free continental breakfast which was helpful to our buget but not our time because it took about 20 minutes to get a bagel. Overall, if you need a nice clean place to sleep, The Handlery is the place to go. If you plan on spending some relaxation time in a hotel, go someplace else. Mehr

This was our third stay at this property over the past year and one half. We are consistently impressed with the professionalism and attitude of the staff -- all of them, from the guy changing the light bulbs in the hall to the front desk manager. This is an older property so it's certainly not fancy, but the rooms are perfectly satisfactory, and the […] amenities are very nice. The Hotel Circle location provides ready access to any part of San Diego. For the price, we think the Handlery is hard to beat. Mehr
