The New York Helmsley Hotel - New York

The Helmsley was good for New Year's at Times Square. The room was spacious, the service was decent, especially considering the number of people coming in, but I would likely stay in a more interesting area next time.

This place is a dump. We checked in to find a half consumed cookie in the corner, stains on the floor and bed, a bathtub that wouldn't drain and an absent housekeeping crew. Not ideal at all.

Good internet connections expensive and hard to access. In this day and age, internet should be included

This is the second time l have stayed at this hotel and it was great, the only thing l would like too see is tea and coffee making items in the room but everything else was great.

We recently stayed at this hotel. We normally stay a few blocks over at the Grand Hyatt. We reserved a Premium King room which is one of the newly renovated rooms on Hotels.com and confirmed our reservation the night before. When we arrived we were checked-in by a woman named Pei who told us we had a Double bed room on a non-renovated floor I told her […] I did not believe that was correct and she was quite rude and let me know that I was incorrect and there were no Premium Rooms available. Thankfully I had a copy of my reservation in my luggage and took it out to show Pei. She refused to touch my paperwork and gave me a pen and told me to circle where it said the room we reserved was a Premium King. When I did as she instructed she took the paper and without saying anything walked away. She came back several minutes later, still not speaking to me and started working on the computer I interupted her and asked her if my room would be ready, without looking up from the computer she said we would be put into the Premium King, as I had reserved. She refused to speak to me after that, just handing us the room key and going back to the computer I really was surprised how rude she was. The Grand Hyatt go out of their way to be accomodating but we did not see this great attitude while checking in at the Helmsley. Mehr

Rooms are older. Need to be updated. Heat never worked in our room. Maint. man said it was controlled by hotel and nothing that he could do. We froze at night. The housekeepers were very noisy, slamming doors, speaking loudly, etc. It didn't help that they used the room in between ours and our children as a supply room. Great location, great service, great everything!

The check-in experience was not favorable. Despite a specific room type reservation thru hotels.com, the hotel tried to only provide a significantly downgraded room and bed-size. The manager worked it out and the room was quiet and clean. Furniture is cheap Colonial laminate and undersized. We arrived at 8pm and were told our room wasn't clean. An hour later we were given the wrong room. All the while the staff was unpleasant and dismissive. The room was adequately clean, but not up to par with the name of the hotel. The rooms are more spacious than is expected in Manhattan. Great location. Close to Subway Trains, Starbucks, UN and within walking distance to all the NYC attractions.

The hotel was great, except for the minor issue that they weren't ready with my room until an hour after I got there...at 10:30 PM. The hotel itself is really beautiful and the room was definitely nice!

Nice experience,staff was very pleasant and helpful and the room was very clean and quiet. The location was very close to subway.

Service good and clean. Very convenient to subway at Grand Central. The room we had, on top floor, with a nice view, could use a bit of a face lift. Rug looked a bit worn and there were cracks here and there (but they were painted over which showed that they tried to take care of it. Check in person accomodated us by moving us to a higher floor and […] it seemed very quiet despite being in a busy location. The hotel staff, including the bell staff, front desk and restaurant could not have been more courteous and accommodating. My overall impression was very positive and my only dissapointment was how dated the rooms were. I'm confident Starwood Hotels will renovate this property to a level one would expect from a Starwood property.

Overall we had an excellent stay at your hotel but we had a couple of reservations. The lack of a coffee maker and refridgerator took some of the shine off the otherwise excellent room. We appreciate that these are difficult times but it is the little things that make the difference between average and special. the room was quite worn. Carpet was very dirty. The street noise is awful and there was construction going on in the building next door with noise very noticeable in the room. It might be a very nice hotel but the room I had was not .

Good value for money and location near to Grand Central Station. Friendly helpful staff . Would happily stay here again.

The hotel is pretty old and could use a facelift. The place is very convenient to Grand Central Terminal. The room was clean but clearly very dated. The wardrobe that used to hold the old large tube-style TV was still in the room even though there was a flat screen TV mounted on the wall. So it was just a large useless cabinet that simply has a huge […] open space in the center of it. They should get rid of the cabinets as they get rid of the old tube TV's. There was no TV channel guide in the room. The doormen were very good about hailing taxis and greeting me coming and going. Room service breakfast was okay but pricey. The housekeepers were friendly and greeted me each day in the hallway. If you get a great rate, book it. Otherwise I honestly would not rush back but instead would look for a hotel that was newer or more recently renovated. Mehr

We do love the location of this hotel in Midtwon East but based on the rating and "name", we were disappointed with our stay. We had to place 3 calls and go downstairs just to get a remote control for the TV, since our phone stopped working as well. For a 4-star hotel, we expected better customer service. We were very satisfied with the hotel and room. It was very convenient to the United Nations and Grand Central Station.

The Helmsley Hotel is the perfect base from which to explore Manhattan. We were lucky enough to be on the 40th floor with a view of both the Empire State and Chrysler buildings from our spacious, comfortable room. I've stayed in better midtown Manhattan hotels but the NY Helmsley was perfectly situated near Grand Central for getting to the US Open! I had a King room and it was fine for my purposes. The lobby bar was fine for a quick drink before heading out to the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The only disappointment was the Helmsley restaurant situation. […] They had very limited hours for breakfast and lunch and apparently only served a bar dinner menu in the lobby. But since we planned on having dinner elsewhere it wasn't a big deal. Overall, the hotels.com rate and the location of the Helmsley at 42nd Street & 3rd Avenue was the big selling point. Mehr

the hotel is very good relative to the price . very recomended . the only problem that is not in the area of the times squere which is a better location .

My husband stays here on business so we knew what to expect. Location is excellent with good breakfast and lunch places within a couple blocks and a 24 hr drugstore also. We walked to the NYPublic Library, the theatre, and back from the Empire State building. Also walked to Times Square and took in the Discovery museum show on Harry Potter. Grand Central […] Station is two blocks away. We had no problems with the hotel room EXCEPT that when the air conditioner was turned all the way down to 55 (this was the way the cleaning staff have been trained to leave it apparently) the room smelled funny. When we set the temperature to a more moderate 72, the smell decreased to almost gone. There is no coffee machine in the room but a great PAX foods next door and a Starbucks down the street make up for it. Great location for adults and business travelers. Did not try the bar. Mehr

We stayed at the New York Helmsley hotel last weekend and had a fantastic experience. The location of the hotel is fantastic for Mid Town and Theatre District destinations and our room located on a corner of the 39th floor offered a fabtastic view of the Chrysler Building. The room was large for NYC standards and the King size bed very comfortable. […] Decor and bathroom a bit dated but overall clean and in good condition. It was my first time in NYC. The stay here was super easy. Check in was fast and very friendly. Made reservations and when I checked in we got upgraded, I dont know if we were just lucky, or if they are just nice like that. But the view was great, the room was very comfortable. The room was well-appointed, quiet, and comfortable. The bed was huge. Bathrobes in the closet. The staff was very courteous and welcoming. The only oversight was that we had no washcloths among our linens. I'm sure the staff would have corrected this, but our stay was short and we worked around it.

Very much in need of facelift, very dated furniture, room was comfortable but amazing no coffee in the room for the price you pay

The New York helmsly hotel was just what we were looking for on our trip to New York. The location was perfect as was the hotel itself. The staff were very friendly.The bedroom was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. If I had one complaint it was that there was no complimentay tea and coffee in the bedroom..

My wife and I stayed at The New York Helmsley over a long weekend stay in New York and was pleasantly surprised by our visit at the hotel. The hotel is in walking distance to most of the midtown attractions yet far enough away whereby you don't get the congestion of Times Square. Checkin was easy and quick and we found the room spacious compared to […] other hotel rooms in New York. There are also many dinning options in the surrounding area with choices that ranged from small delis to gourmet restaurants. On a recent trip to New York, we found a good deal on Hotels.com of the Helmsley Hotel. The hotel was right on 42nd street in a great location, only a stone throw away from Grand Central station and a short 5-10 minute walk to Times Square. We arrived at 1 pm (3 hours before check-in) and they were able to find a room and accomodate us right away. […] The staff were very friendly, room was in excellent condition and had a very comfortable bed. All in all, we would stay here again and recommend it to others. The only downfall was the $60/day for valet parking, but in New York you can expect to pay quite a bit no matter where you park. Mehr

cost to park was not as listed it was much more so it cost me two arms for two night was not to happy but all in all it was very good.
