The Powell Hotel - San Francisco

Nostalgic and modern. Clean and comfortable. Parking is valet with unlmtd in/out but 33$... Same Pricing As other hotels in the area.

Very conveniently located near transportation(BART/MUNI and Cable Car terminal) Typical big city noise. Hotel is old and it shows. Heating by steam radiator did not seem to even work until after the sun went down. Only one ice machine, on the third floor and down two long hallways, serves the whole six-story hotel. Bathrooms are modernized very cheaply. […] "Re-Bath" type bath/shower update. Room walls not at all soundproofed. You will hear every conversation in the hallways. Mehr

It is just next to the Powell BART station and is very convenience to go anywhere in SF. The hotel is very nice, provides with breakfast and snack at noon. The best is if the room has refridge.

I would not reccomend this hotel to anyone. The staff are not friendly or helpful!!!! It is not in good location with people sleeping out on the street in front of the hotel and begging people for hand outs. It is not very family friendly. I would definitely stay some where else.

The Powell is in a terrific location in downtown San Francisco convenient to shopping, restaurants, and sightseeing. My only negative is that parking is inconvenient so because of the proximity of public transportation I wouldn't bring a car with me next time.

The hotel was right on the cable car line - close to everything. The staff was very helpful - I asked lots of questions.

I recently stayed at this Hotel and found I almost wanted NOT to upon check-in! The male attendant at the desk (appeared to be perhaps multi-racial) was extremely rude! I almost cancelled due to this - thankfully, one of his co-workers (a very nice asian gentleman) noticed my frustration, and he helped me with the details of my check in. The lobby looks […] nice - and makes you think the rooms are also modern. The windows were old and had cracked paint around the frame, however the bed was comfortable, and the newly renovated shower and bathroom were very nice. The room was extremely tiny, however - but it suited my needs fine since there were only two of us staying for the night. I wished someone mentioned there was a continental breakfast on check-in, because I would've been sure to wake up in time for this - and I only found out when I found a flyer (after the fact) on one of the bedside tables. It was nice to hear the cable car right outside our room - and although it was a bit noisy outside at times, it was to be expected since shopping surrounds the hotel and it is the holiday shopping season. One thing I really liked, was the little cafe downstairs. They offered lots of tasty looking sandwiches, many gourmet in nature, and about 10 different varieties of soups all of which sounded very yummy. I opted for the freshly squeezed OJ. Overall, it's a "nice" hotel - definitely NOT one of the fancy schmancy types that surround the city - now, would I stay there again? Most likely - since it was more affordable than the others around Union Square area - and like I said, it was clean, and really that's all that matters for any stay. Now, if that same attendant is working...he just better stay away from ME! I guess you get the most "bang" for your buck here and it's "decent". Mehr

This hotel is a bit on the older side but it has a lot of character. The rooms are clean, restroom is a bit small but overall the hotel is great for sleeping and resting. The one thing I would like is a heater as the nights do get cold in SF. The location is perfect, right next door to Forever 21 and across from Gap. You need a new check in clerk. The young guy had no interpersonal skills and started my stay on the wrong foot. He was almost like a robot. You need a heater!! If I had known this, I would not of stayed there. What hotel doesn't have a heater???? You need to stop giving out dirty, old blankets and children space heaters to those freezing. Invest into […] better blankets and space heaters if you don't have heaters!!! Mehr

Great value in central San Fran, just off the Powell St. Cable Car, Powell St BART and convention district. Really can't beat it for value. Breakfast a bit skimpy but there is a coffee shop in the hotel that is a more than adequate supplement. I'm a repeat customer of the Powell whenever I come to San Francisco.

My wife and I were quite please with the Powell. The location can't be beat- on Market and Powell right in front of the cable car turn-around and the Powell Street BART station, so very convenient to/from SFO. The walls were paper thin and we were woken up a few times by loud revelers in the halls, and the room was a bit shabby- the walls could use […] a coat of paint and the blanket had a few holes and ragged ends. Nothing major though, and the bathroom was spotless. The mattress was comfy too. A great experience for the price. Would definitely stay again. Mehr

The Powell has a good location near other quality hotels, but few other positive qualities. My room was small with minimal soundproofing to keep out noise from the hallway or outside. Since the cable car runs next to the hotel, I could hear that quite clearly. Also, despite the minimal soundproofing, housekeeping was doing something like shampooing […] hallway carpets outside my door about 3:00 AM one night and something else involving heavy carts the other night. The free wireless was worthless on the sixth (top) floor because the signal was so weak. There is one ice machine accessible to the guests for the whole hotel (3rd floor) and it did not work. Bed was small and uncomfortable. On one of the two elevators, you need to know to push the eighth floor button to get to the sixth floor (there is no eighth floor). The lobby is small and cramped; most of the first floor of the building has been converted to retain space separated from the hotel. After two nights I transferred across the street to the Parc 55 Wyndham. For a small additional charge, the Parc 55 was quite nice. Mehr

Although the bed was comfortable there was significant mold on the ceiling of the shower. The ice machine (only one for six floors) was broken necessitating a journey to the lobby for ice (PITA). On the good side, valet parking was reasonable compared to other hotels and that service was good overall, albeit slow (allow at least 15 minutes to bring […] your car up). Service was courteous. Great location but for the price we payed we shouldnt of had mold in bathroom

This was a great destination hotel! Every mode of transportation was outside our door. The service was friendly and helpful, the room clean and plenty roomy for a botique hotel, the bed was extremely comfy and the bathroom equipped with everything we needed. We did hear outside noise one night so we would request an off the street room the next time […] we are there, and there will be a next time! We highly recommend this hotel if San Francisco is your destination. We took BART into the city and it stopped across the street. The Cable Car was outside our door and many bus lines were right there on Market St. No need for a car of cab if you are flying in. We made a wise decision choosing The Powell. Mehr

Heat did not work. Staff was friendly, but not very helpful. Valet parking was VERY slow. Cool old building. But you definitely have the ammenities of an OLD building. May wish to look elsewhere.

Its old and it's inexpensive, but the location can't be beat. The rooms were clean, no problems, would stay there again.

This hotel was in a great location and within walking distance of great shops. The room was pleasant but it was right next to the elevator. Room 501 is not recommended especially during Halloween weekend in SF. We would stay there again but in a room away from the elavator.

I have nothing but good things to say about the Powell Hotel!! Great price, great location, wireless internet, close to all the action. The MUNI and BART stations are right outside the door!!! It is an older hotel that has been upgraded so if you are looking for 5 stars don't bother. If you need a safe, clean hotel at a reasonable price in the heart […] of SF then the Powell is for you!! This hotel is SO conveniently located right near the cable car turnaround and in the midst of all the shops, restaurants, etc. However, the rooms are tiny, you don't want to open the drapes due to pigeon poop covering them, and there were massive cochroaches in one of our 3 rooms. Stay here if you want simplicity and convenience but not if you are expecting […] the works. Mehr

This hotel is in a great location. It is about a 2-3 block walk from Union Square. It is less than a half block away from the BART Powell Street station (which can take you to and from the airport as well as other areas of San Francisco). It's also steps away from the Cable Car line that can take you all the way to Fisherman's Warf. This is not the […] fanciest hotel. My room was kind of small, but it was clean. It's an older hotel, so you can hear noise a little louder than usual, especially if people are walking around in the hallways talking or if people slam their doors shut. The rooms also do not have refrigerators or alarm clocks. But there is complimentary Wi-Fi and there is a computer at the front desk available to print of any necessary documents (boarding passes, etc). No gym, but they do have an agreement with a near by gym for $15 per day. I would definitely stay here again. Mehr

What I liked about the hotel was that the rooms were clean and cozy. The hotel was quiet and I felt safe. The surrounding area was very busy and diverse, but it was easy to get to.

This hotel is in a great location, it's interior is elegant yet charming. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Great pick if you want to fully appreciate the history of San Francisco from your hotel to all the surrounding neighborhoods full of delicious restaurants, markets and shopping.

The hotel location was perfect! It was right across the road from shops and when you step out of the front door the tram stop is right there! There is a coffee shop in the lobby which was also great to grab a coffee before heading off sight-seeing. Their valet parking service was a little pricey but once compared to other rates in the area it was very […] reasonable. The staff were always very helpful. If you're not too fussed on 'luxury' then this hotel is great. Rooms area little dated, but fine if you are seeing it as a place to just come and relax and sleep in the evening! Mehr

This is a great location. It's close to the Convention Center, Union Square, and shopping. For most of the year, the fact that the rooms are not air conditioned would probably be fine, but I was there in September, it was in the upper 80's, and the room was uncomfortably warm. I asked for a fan and it was delivered immediately. The windows didn't have […] screens, but I opened them anyway and was comfortable eventually. There is free wireless internet, which is a plus, and and staff was extremely helpful and responsive. There is a free continental breakfast and happy hour in the afternoon, another nice touch. This is no Luxury hotel but it is clean and safe and a very helpful staff. It is very convenient to the Bart, shopping and Mascone Center. I flew into SFO and had no problem using the Bart to get there very little walking. There is no AC in the rooms but hey its San Francisco so i didn't need it. For the price its a great downtown hotel.

I wasn't aware that they had no air conditioning in the room or even just a ceiling fan. I know SF isn't known for the heat but I'm in the city every 3 months and the Hotels in the Lombard area have air and fans just to block out the noise. Something to look into for the hotel. This place needs to be completely gutted and redone. The lobby and mezanine were charming. The front desk clerk was not unfriendly, and the gl who monitored the daily breakfast as cheerful. However, the rest of the hotel, or what I saw of it, was completely unacceptable. In the room I was given, the dirtly floors were separating from the walls, the […] baseboards and chair rails had been painted over too many times, and there was an overall feel --and smell-- of dingyness. The room was not nearly clean enough. It clearly had not been vacuumed; the desk, doors, and walls needed to be scrubbed with soap and water; I had to shower in sandals because the shower was so dingy; and there was a box of someone else's leftover food holding the window open! If the rest of the city had not been sold out, I would have left. Had this been a vacation, I would have changed cities entirely. Throughout the night, the mintenance staff could be heard stomping up and down the hall, talking loudly on the radio, and slamming doors. I will definitely not be staying at this hotel again without some major changes. Mehr

We stayed here for a portion of our honeymoon. Overall, the boutique feel is neat! The rooms need updating and are small, but overall they are clean with high ceilings. The location was perfect - right next to the trolley car (which I would recommend riding!) and union square. We were looking more for location and price and this is the place! Great location - very convenient.

Location was right in the middle of the city, right outside the door is the Trolley Start. Screens on windows could be taken care off better though.

You will smell a bad stench from the carpets at lobby, along the floor of your hotel rOom. Bed bugs are found on bed. Shower water is low. Good location though... But will not stay again, unless there is a major revamp.
