Kona Kai Resort - San Diego

man hat hier den eindruck ,dass das hotel hinter jedem $ hinterher ist. beispiel: gym kostet extra. früh stück: ein glass milch, oder ein glass orangensaft, alles kostet extra. besser die zimmerpreise erhöhen, man will nicht ständig extrakosten haben. das nervt.

Pillows were like boat cushions. Booked this room because of gym onsite. $10 a day additional charge to use, $15 a day for parking. A deal breaker for me. Won't stay here again, even though location was perfect!

I enjoyed it because it was on the bay

We needed a quick getaway to relax and destress. This property is very clean, the staff is helpful and polite. We really enjoyed the view and the fact that there are nice quiet places to walk and just enjoy being together. We arrived Fri afternoon, went to our room, and discovered a great view of the marina (and pool area). Our room was clean and quite large. The drapes were dark enough that we were allowed to sleep til 9:45 on Sat morning despite having and east facing room. Sat evening we went to Phil's BBQ and ordered to go since the line was like Disneyland. The food […] was incredible and we had a picnic at a table directly across from the hotel, with a view of the bay and part of the ocean. We loved the place and will definitely stay there again! Mehr

This was an awesome getaway. The property is at the end of Shelter Island. There is a great view of the bay from just about every room. It also had a walking park across the street. It was very peaceful and quiet for the most part. If you are by the pool area you will hear the guest enjoying themselves in the pool. Some have complained about there not being a flat screen tv in the rooms. We were not there for tv but the location. The staff went above and beyond. We dropped a family member off at the airport very early and needed some sleep. They allowed us to check in at 7am and didn't charge for another night. Be warned that you will be charged a $15 parking fee but your vehicles are in a secured lot. This was a very relaxing getaway. Mehr

We loved the location; close to Sea World, Mission Beach and Belmont Park, downtown, La Jolla Cove, lots of shopping and Coronado Island. And the views of the bay and the marina were gorgeous! The resort itself is postcard beautiful even better than the pictures on the Internet. The large pool was awesome with warm salt water and lap lanes. Great hot […] tub. We rented bikes from the resort fitness center for 2 hours for $5 and biked around the island and even saw dolphins in the Bay. The kids loved exploring the marina for little sea life, the playground, volleyball net. I I only wished for a little bigger room, more shelves or drawers for clothes, a kitchenette or even a shared kitchen for guests and no fee for using the fitness center and free parking (a $15 fee). The hotel was very nice on the outside, by the pool, and the restaurant area, but the room we stayed in was old, tacky, and smelled funny. I wish the room was as nice as the rest of the hotel.

Had a wonderful stay, wonderful room, great service, couldn't ask for more. Just didn't want to leave.

Front office staff could be much more friendlier. I had a chance to ask a question to 3 different staff on 3 different occasions and I felt I was bothering them. Great location and surroundings but beware when u check-in or deal with the FO staff.

We really enjoyed our stay at Kona Kai. Staff is exeptionally friendly and helpful. Rooms could use an update and food was just ok. Other then that, the property is beautiful and well cared for. I would defiantly stay again.

Calm and serinity is my explaination of this location Beautiful surroindings. Bed could have been better but I can overlook that for the chance to look at the marina all day. Only issue I has was the waitstaff at the restaurant. I found the server to be impolite and rude and although the food was good, it runied my breakfast. I did not go back for lunch […] or dinner. Great location, the only think I didn't like was the smell of the room when you walked in (like damp & old smell), light is too dim in the bathroom & the movie ordering system was down as well. We enjoyed the pool area and location of our room. The service was pretty good too.

The rooms were nice but fairly small. Not sure this would be a room for kids. Seemed a little run down as well but not in poor condition. Looked dated. Pretty good dinner in the little dining room after some mediocre lobster bisque. Very nice pool (heated) and hot tub on a fairly cool night ~55F.

The hotel has a very beautiful lobby. The best thing was having the opportunity to walk to a small pier right in front of the hotel. The room was Ok. Nothing too special. The beds are uncomfortable and not sturdy enough. I did not appreciate the fact that I had to pay 16 dollars a night for parking. I think it was very ridiculous. I had never stayed […] in a hotel where parking is not free. If I would of know this, I would of not stayed here.. Mehr

I rented this for my daughter and her new husband. We upgraded to the water view king because it included the breakfast. The hotel staff was amazing! The view breathtaking! The room was clean and beautiful. It was just as advertised and I would definitely stay there again, as would they. The only draw back was the extra fee for parking, but in san Diego […] parking is a premium. Mehr

Amazing stay w great weather! Please, hotel manager, replace your in room and pool towels. The coarseness of the towels does not match the beauty of the property

We found the room too small, with a single chair and little room to move about; a huge armoire occupied much of what would have been open space in the room. I opted for a more expensive room with a view and breakfast, and was disappointed to have only a view of the pool and not the bay. The facility is in a great location, but it simply hasn't been […] kept up to the standards that the price demands; the room had no accessible electrical outlets, the bathtub had visible wear with a flaking surface, and in general the room felt tired and worn. We did alright and enjoyed our time in San Diego, but I can't say I experienced much that set this apart from the low-end motels that charge less than half Kona Kai's rates. Mehr

Above average but below outstanding overall. Free breakfast was lame. You get egg and sauge. Pancake and bread are separate order. You can get pancakes, but egg and sausage are separate. Really, you are getting half a breakfast. But food was delicious though. Hotel is outdated, comforter smelt used. Beds and pillow are comfy. Location is great no complaints […] there. The lighting in the room was extremely dim and the outlets were few and far between. The location is definitely relaxing and picturesque but it's not in the heart of everything, which may be a pro or a con for some people. Overall we were able to get around with ease, Mission Beach is about 20 minutes away, and there are a few good restaurants around. […] Just avoid the sushi one!!! They were so rude! The Kona Kai. Well when I booked this I read the reviews and it seemed to be okay. But when I got there, well things just were not going well. First, No on smiled or looked happy to be there, well except housekeeping and the bartender. The room was not too bad, but showing its age. The pool was okay, but bring your own towel. We bought the breakfast […] package with the room, this is where it really started to get fun. We went down at 8am so we can get out and head to the zoo. When we got to the restaurant there was a line of 15 people in front of us. Okay I can deal with that, but we all soon noticed there was no one seating people and only 2 waiters on the floor. After 15 mins someone showed up to seat guests. Well he sat 2 parties and told the rest of us it would anther 20 mins to be seated. Kind of funny since there were now 30 tables open. I talked to the hotel manager and he told me they could not handle a “rush” of guests in the restaurant. This infuriated me more as what he was saying was any more that 20 people eating at one time is a rush. We all there to eat and get on with other activities, taking 1.5 hours for a breakfast that was not one of them. I did see the manager busing tables and serving food, so do think our little talk did something. With so many choices in San Diego, you could do much better for the cost of this place. Mehr

We were told on arrival that the room we booked was one of their "least desirable" and so we upgraded to a room overlooking the pool. The pool and hot tub were nice but you may want to bring your own beach towels - theirs are sized like dish rags. The service is satisfactory. Our room had no shampoo or soap when we arrived. We called and they said […] they would bring it but never did, so we tracked down the housekeeping cart. There was an added fee for the gym which we weren't expecting. $10, which I may have paid but they wouldn't allow my son into the gym with me so we skipped it. The room service menu has no children's options, though the restaurant does. (We had to order an adult order of pancakes for a 3 year old which is silly.) The food was decent, but in my opinion overpriced. Overall, we were satisfied with the stay. Our mission was to have some family time, hanging out by the pool and relaxing, and we accomplished that. This hotel has hidden costs that DO NOT appear on the website. 1) There is a hidden fee for parking 2) There is a hidden fee to use the fitness center!!!(I have never paid to use a fitness center) 3) Breakfast was not included for our family. Only 2 vouchers per hotel room! Not only that, you had to order from a "special" menu which included 5 different […] choices..and had to PAY for drinks! We chose this hotel over a 100 others because we wanted to workout while we were there and have complimentary breakfast before we left for Sea World or the beach. I complained to the hotel staff and they did not seem to care. On top of all the EXTRA charges, the beds were very old coil mattresses which made noise whenever you moved, the bathroom could only accommodate 1 person at a time because it was so small, and the staff were rude and unhelpful. The telephone started beeping at 7 am. It was a message, so I called the front desk. I was told I had coupons for breakfast. I told them that was not worth waking me up for. The next morning they did it again! I complained to Mark, the manager, and he was pretty rude, basically blowing me off. I wouldn't go back there again.

HOTEL WAS PRETTY OK BUT THE SERVICE AT THE BAR WAS TERRIBLE. ON THE RESTAURANT SIDE, SERVICE WAS PRETTY FINE. VIEW IS NICE BUT MAKE SURE YOU GET THE GARDEN VIEW BY THE POOL.

I expected a nice resort for my anniversary and it was nothing nice plenty of nicer places near by

We stayed for one night and visited the PLNU Campus the next day. The location was absolutely beautiful and there was a beautiful view off of our balcony. The rooms were clean, bed was comfy and the grounds were immaculate. Our only complaint would have to be the hotel restaraunt. We went there for dinner because we were tired and didn't want to drive, […] but the experience was less than satisfying. I don't mind paying $80+ for dinner for 4 if the food and experience is good, but that wasn't the case. They were very slow and that was unexpected with only 4 tables. When we did get our food, it was cold ad the fries were soggy. We returned for breakfast and that was a much better experieince, fast and very good. Maybe we just caught them on an off night. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and will be back! Mehr

My family stayed here for spring breakfor our annual trip to San Diego. Having never been to Shelter Island we were excited. The location and the view were great. Although, this isnt the kind of beach you would relax on as it was full of rocks, it was beautiful. In addition, considering the proce we paid for the room I would not have expected the hotel […] to be full of people running up and down the hallways all night and gathering on their porches partying loudly. The hotel is obviously aged and it's better days behind it. This would not have bothered me had they not commanded the same price as more modern hotels. There was only a window unit for heating and cooling and only had 2 settings, broiling hot or ice cold. The TV was the old tube style with poor reception and the coffee maker spit out chunks of gunk when we tried to use it. The rest of the decor was early 80's and didn't really flow well as everything felt rammed togather. Knowing all of this I would consider staying here again but for much less then the two hundred a night we spent. Mehr

Ice machine was broken for the entire building is very inconvenient. The parking fee was a pain considering the key entry device that you had to get to work. overall just was not impressed with this facilitie.

We have no complaints about this hotel. I recommend it.

The hotel is outdated but comfortable. We had a slight bird problem on the balconey. The hotel bar closed at 10pm on both Friday and Saturday night. Had trouble ordering breakfast one morning. No body answered the phone. The people were nice and the location is great.

We only stayed one night as we had a layover in San Diego. Shuttle picked us up at airport, which was nice. Nice restaurant onsite. We ate in the bar and the gentleman on shift was very accomodating, as our son is a vegetarian and there were no dinner options, but he was able to order sides. All the employees throughout were very nice and helpful. My […] only complaint is the paper thin walls! Could hear everything from both sides of the wall and only got one hour of sleep, which was not good! Mehr

Ok, not the most modern hotel. If your looking for a flat screen tv and a bathroom that is ultra-modern, then this is not for you. However, YOUR IN SAN DIEGO!!! you walk outside and there is ocean all around your hotel. Wonderful park facing north island in front, perfect for a long stroll. Playgrounds for kids. price is perfect and staff are happy […] and kind. Mehr
